A brave novel about love, social justice, and a medical system oblivious to the importance of reproductive rights
Middenrammers is a brave and provocative novel about one doctor's battle for social justice in a small-town hospital. Set in the UK in the 1970s, the story follows young Dr. Brian Davis' efforts to adjust to his new job in a Yorkshire fishing town. The town's only hospital permits no contraceptive advice, or abortions. Dr. Davis and Woodie -- the midwife he falls in love with -- regularly come face to face with the terrible repercussions of these policies. Because they refuse to accept the attitude of the hospital administrators-- who believe that the right thing to do is to restrict choice and deny reproductive options -- the course of their lives is changed as much as those of the patients.
Told in graphic detail, the novel drives home the link between reproductive rights and social justice, while reminding us that a few decent people can make a world of difference.
I read this entire book today, and I wish there was more to read, I enjoyed the book that much. It was so well written and so interesting. I didn't know that birth control was such a hugh conflict in the UK in 1970. I loved Dr. Davis and Woodie and that they made a difference for a multitude of women. This was a very interesting read and I would recommend it. It does have some graphic descriptions not suitable for everyone. I received my book from Goodreads Giveaways.
John Bart's use of language is outstanding. The reader is right there in Yorkshire, living alongside these colourful characters. I believe there is a sequel and cannot wait to get at it. Wonderfully written, captivating characters and so much was real life back in the 70's. I fear it may still be so in some places. As a first book, Bart has done a fantastic job.
i knew Dr Bart as a very intelligent, kind and nice man when he was our family doc. had no idea he could write too, just such a nice surprise, loved the book, very real and engaging
