In the beginning of the seventh book, Elaine Brogan and Nick LaGrange drive to the U.S. Embassy in Paris, where they are arrested on the spot for letting Cattoretti go. Ouch! It looks like Raj Malik found out somehow what the two secret agents did and he decided that it would be better to put them in prison and interrogate them whenever he likes. There, we enter the abominable hell Elaine lives in: terrifying thoughts cross her mind that she will not see Nick or her children again, she endures the humiliation of staying into a windowless, stinky cell and she undergoes various methods of torture (such as loud metal music, sleep deprivation, starvation) which gradually affect her mind and senses. Unlike his wife, Nick copes a little better with this subhuman treatment, because he worked as a professional extractor, if you still remember from book 6. But how can he escape without his equipment? Did Elaine and Nick reach a dead end? Will anyone help them get out of this obscure place? Read the book and you will find out.
I'm reading this as a serial novel on the authors blog. I also pre-ordered the novel, which gives you the option of downloading a weeks worth of chapters. After letting The Cat escape, Nick and Elaine must face the consequences. We also get the background story of Elaine's friend, and former instructor, Luna Faye.
I cannot say enough good things about this series! The character development is A+! Just when you think you know the "back story", more details emerge that leave your jaw hanging! I love how once supporting characters are now becoming an integral part of the story. Kudos Mike!! Another "un-putdownable" book!!!
Elaine and Nick are called to the American Embassy by Raj, thinking they are getting a reward, commendation, or pat on the back fro the Secret Service the go in a light jovial mood. Unarmed, and unaware, they walk straight into a well laid trap. Immediately after arriving and sitting down, Raj comes in and has the arrested for helping Giorgio Cattoretti escape. Raj wants to know how much of the 60 million the insurance company shelled out was given to them for their help. They deny any knowledge, or complicity and request an attorney.Raj however has other plans, they are whisked off to a black ops site in Chad, near Sudan. They are bound and shackled and transported with hoods covering their heads. All they know is they are soon surrounded by nothing but desert sand. By the curvature of the sun, maybe somewhere in the middle east. From this point on they are tortured for many weeks, so many they lost count.
Eventually Nick gets a nurse to help him escape, but when he tries, the whole place goes crazy. Shots are fired, Nick manages to get free, but Elaine is being taken away in a helicopter.
This story will also give you the basic background and life story of Luna, along with her first major job as an FBI agent. Luna's story is sad, but her first case is a doozie, with as many twist, turns and surprises as the main story, although hers is much more predictable and easier to figure out, it's still a great story. Then the story veers back to the main plot line and you are without a clue once again to what might happen next.
Shocking, spellbinding, edge of your seat, anxiety filled, action packed, horrific situations, heart wrenching moments, what else could you ask for in a story?
I purchased this collection because I enjoyed the first super box set so much I didn't want the story to end. All opinions are solely my own and have no ill intent towards the author, publisher , or promoters of this book. I loved it . Warning extreme violence, adult language and situations.
I had a bit of a hard time at the beginning of this book. Normally I can’t put a book in this series down, but the vivid accounts triggered me. So as an alert, if detailed violence gets to you, there is a short span at the start, but after that it’s smooth sailing. A few characters from earlier in the series appear again, with some more insight into their past. This is one of the things I like about this series, you move forward while learning how his characters arrived at that point. This time 4.5 rating, but only due to my own uneasiness at the start. I just can’t stop reading this series. I am so glad there are now 13 books of LM&M to read.
In LMM #7 “Off the Grid”, author Mike Wells reconciles contemporary readers’ appetite for dynamic action and depth of character.
“Off the Grid” is the 7th book from the Lust, Money & Murder series and marks the beginning of the LMM 3rd trilogy.
Book 6 ends with Secret Service agent Elaine Brogan and Nick LaGrange pursuing criminal Giorgio Cattoretti on a train and eventually letting him escape.
In the 7th installment, the main character Elaine Brogan and her husband Nick LaGrange are invited for a meeting with Raj Malik (the head of the US Secret Service’s European Operations) at the American Embassy in Paris. Both of them are relaxed and it seems that everything in their life has taken turn for the better when the story takes an absolutely unexpected turn and the two of them land in hell.
Characters from the previous books reappear in “Off the Grid” - Luna Faye, Tony, Dimitriy and more. The author develops a secondary plot in which Luna Faye’s story finds its place. I personally consider this “digression” from the main plot very much to the point, giving readers a chance to know more not only about Elaine Brogan but also about the supporting characters. Once again Mr. Wells proves that he is not only a master of dynamic action, unexpected twists and turns but also an accomplished expert in the character-building craft.
It is fair to point out that “Off the Grid” is part of a book series (“Lust, Money and Murder”) and all installments are interrelated and characters evolve with each book, which means readers would better start from the first trilogy.
For me the 7th book from the Lust, Money & Murder series was a very entertaining and addictive read! From a total stranger I am slowly turning into a Mike Well’s fan and I sincerely recommend other readers to take the plunge into the “Lust, Money and Murder” adventure!
Great installment. Being brought to this point of suspense, this one made for a real page- turner. It's truly amazing. The series doesn't slow up, and I love surprises. You get some good ones here. It stays air- tight in credibility, and the plotline does not let up. Keep reading action/ suspense fans!
What would you do if the country you loved turned its back to you?
In his own unique style, Mike Wells has taken a situation out of today's headlines and given it his typical twist. Do Elaine and Nick have what it takes to survive being off the grid?
