Musical / 5f / Unit set Winner of four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Off Broadway Musical in its original New York production, this hilarious international hit was revived in New York with a male cast Nunsense A Men!. The show is a fund raiser put on by the Little Sisters of Hoboken to raise money to bury sisters accidently poisoned by the convent cook, Sister Julia (Child of God). There is a reason I'm a stage manager/props person and not a director. It's hard for me to visualize things from the script. I'm sure as soon as we start rehearsals I'll love it and proclaim the director a genius. Charming characters, very fun premise.
Many years ago I saw this play with friends, which I still have fond memories of (the play, not the friends). At the end of the show, we all ran to purchase these books, but honestly, it's been so long since I saw the play, I can't remember how any of the songs went, or any of anything actually, except for that the play was very funny...but reading it deadpan? Not so much.
Also, it's a little dated (ie purchasing a beta-max), so at this point it would have to be completely updated for today's audience to relate to the material. The base plot is fine, but the details are so antiquated that I had trouble recollecting the references...anyone younger than me would be entirely lost - unless of course they are a student of social history? Who knows.
No plot to speak of, out-dated corny jokes, and sparse characters. It's not particularly funny, and it doesn't pack any kind of emotional weight to invest a reader (or audience member that is expected so often to participate).
