Determining Doctrine: A Reference Guide for Evaluating Doctrinal Truth is a remarkable compilation of statements and quotations from Church leaders and scholars dealing with doctrinal evaluation. Drawing from a wide range of interesting and authoritative sources, this work provides explanation and comment on the full scope of subjects and issues relating to the determination of true doctrine for Latter-day Saints. These include selected materials examining the following as they affect doctrine:
The Scriptures or standard works; Prophets and apostles, the living oracles; Church Correlation; Gospel Knowledge; Scientific theories; Doctrinally oriented books; False doctrine and apostasy.
Also scattered throughout this reference guide are many previously unpublished and little-known excerpts selected from the correspondence of a number of Church leaders and scholars, including Harold B. Lee, Joseph Fielding Smith, Bruce R. McConkie, and Hugh Nibley.
This is a master piece in its niche. Written for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this book collects the statements of Church leaders from Joseph Smith to the present dealing with determining what qualifies as authorized Church doctrine. This is not a statement of all those doctrines. Its purpose is much narrower than that. It deals only with the process or criteria for determining doctrine. Most members understand that we use the standard works and the words of the living prophets and we rely on the witness of the Holy Ghost. That standard is correct and adequate for almost all members and purposes. This book compiles the authentic quotes and teaching to defend that standard in the greatest detail possible.
I read the entire 400 pages, but I have encouraged only one friend to read it because of detail that would appear to be overkill for most readers.
The editor/compiler has done a masterful job of collecting and organizing material while originating very few contextual comments. I believe that some of these quotes had never been published publically before. Again there is nothing earth shattering here. There are no surprises. But I cannot imagine a better compilation of this material.
The result for me is simply another confirming witness that modern revelation was restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith and continues in the Church today.
