I actually chose the revised edition of this book but am unable to find it on goodreads.
This is a nonfiction biography book, meaning that it is the story of a real person's life written by someone else. It begins with Beckham's first game for the L.A. Galaxy. He began this game on the bench with an injury and towards the end of the game he was back on the bench after being side swiped by the other team. Savage then goes back to the past and tells the readers where Beckham's love for soccer began and how it turned into stardom. The intended audience for this book is grade 2-3.
This book reminded me of a book I read when I was a child called Mia Hamm Winners Never Quit by Mia Hamm. This is a realistic fiction book based on the professional soccer player Mia Hamm. This story is about a girl on a soccer team who loves to win and is a sore loser when they lose. By the end of the story Mia realizes it's more important to be a part of the team and to be a good team player rather than to win. The intended audience for this book is K-2.
I chose to pair these books because they have a similar target audience and are both about soccer. After reading the book about how Beckham became a soccer star, the students can use this knowledge when reading about someone their age playing soccer and realizing the truth behind being on a team. Hamm's book also shows how Beckham wouldn't have been able to become such a great soccer player had he only been focused on winning all of the time.
