I read the whole book because I wanted to be prepared for my class. It did not dawn on me until after the fact that there was no need to read straight through a writer's manual for school.

Needed this for my ENG101 class, and ended up reading a few pages at the beginning of the year before realizing it was kinda pointless because I already knew everything in it.

However it is really good if you struggle with writing. Just personally it did nothing haha.

I loved this textbook since it was a complete and comprehensive guide to writing nonfiction, especially college student essays, in four different formats depending on the subject. It was an invaluable resource in learning how to cite all my sources. However, I have one problem with it. I can’t take a book called The Little Seagull Handbook seriously. It sounds like a wildlife field guide or something for Boy Scouts. Not a proper Composition textbook.

Relevance & Relationship: Many Juniors and Seniors are expected to write research papers and portfolio pieces. With the introduction of new writing standards, all students will be expected to write more pieces.
Purpose: The purpose of this handbook is to help students properly cite their resources no matter what specific type they must cite-APA, MLA, Chicago, etc. This book is written for high school and college students. The cost is around $20.00, if numerous styles are cited then the price is worth it.
Validity: This book is only one year old and therefore includes the most recent citing expectations as well as various styles. This resources should stay current for approximately 5 years.
Format: The book is approximately 353 pages and is small enough to fit into a pocket. The format includes paragraphs but also bulleted information for quick and easy reference. Many examples are given but no pictures are used.
Arrangement & Presentation: The book includes a table of contents and alphabetical index at the end of the book. Topics can be looked up according to citation by author, title, print, electronic, or style of citation-APA, MLA, Chicago.
Diversity: There were several books for citations but this book was the most up to date and complete book for referencing sources in a paper. Also, if 30 students are in the library writing a paper, numerous books need to be available to help them cite their resources.

This is one of THE BEST English textbooks out there! First of all, it was nothing like the tomes we students have had to use before, so that mentally took a lot of pressure off our minds. Secondly, it was so much like a survival handbook with only the most important details written in. Lastly, this is a book for the ages and can easily fit in any purse or small backpack. To all English teachers who teach more than just MLA citations, pick this one up and/or offer your students to!!
