The Skinwalkers' Witchling #1

The Witchling Apprentice

Rate this book
Witches, potions, and magical spells — that all made sense. But seeing men turn into animal-like monsters in the middle of the night? That had to be fiction, right? Cassandra Booth thought her life in the world of the witches would be complete when she joined her coven. Fate had other plans for her. Joining the coven brings new knowledge, like mates and men who turn into animals, all things Cassie would rather have been clueless about. As her plans unravel, she must find a way to join the coven in a way that doesn't involve committing her life to an old friend that she now hates.

Well that was disappointing. The entire book gave me that disgusted achy feeling in my chest when your extremely disappointed in a character you thought was going to be amazing. The story starts out with Cas being naive and in the dark about everything. which hey that's fine. was expecting that. then it goes down hill from there:

1. Cassandra has absolutely no backbone..none...nada...zip, she gives in to everything, and all the things we fell in love with in the previous series...gone. she can make one potion thats it. don't see her do anything else the whole book.

2. She lets her "best friend"Whitney walk all over her, tell her what to do, and convince her she knows best and is making the best decisions.-Chick(Whitney) practically has to wipe the saliva off her face when Nate comes around or is mentioned or thought about and you think she has your best interest in mind??!!!..oh but wait it gets better. Bff's mind can be accessed by the alpha at night. Cas finds this out and shes all "so the alpha knows where I am?" (while she is trying to escape) and bff is all "yes im sorry but i promised i would bring you back to the coven but i wont let them have you ill protect you." and Cas is like "really okay i trust you how are you going to make sure they don't steal my powers and force me to bond with Nate" and bff answer " im a girl im different alpha can't make me" and Cas is like " oh okay." one day later bbf " don't worry you'll be safe with Nate he will protect you" and Cas is like " oh okay" nap. W.T.F? i kid you not.

3. Cas mates completely without her knowledge to Nate (the jackass Alpha) she has a crush on, but doesn't have a crush on, but then when he kisses her and mates her without her knowledge and she just goes with it even after she remembers he has a girlfriend and he says he was just passing time till she tested and became more powerful! I wanted to slam my head into the wall and throw my kindle right there! First of all if you don't like someone and they kiss you you don't just go into a dreamy " the mostest hottest popular blue eyed guy is kissing me I am sooooo lucky this is a dream!!!!" GAG. Nate's a jackass who seems to do a complete 180 once Cas proves how powerful she is and can't believe she would not want to be forced to mate with him ( hell with how she acts I don't believe it either the twit) and Cas say " I won't be forced, I don't believe any of this, your all lying." then goes and takes a nap. the entire book was her "I don't want a mate, I want a choice, i don't believe in fate." but yet she never does anything about it. it was entirely frustrating.

4. All she has ever wanted was to be included and feel like she is part of something normal. fine whatever. but she is supposedly to be the most powerful witch in like ever and she is the weakest twit I've ever read about.

5. AGAIN WITH THE WHOLE MATE BULL CRAP-he completely ignores her for 8 years, goes out with all these different girls etc and your suddenly okay with it cause he now says he likes you due to you being super powerful and cause he says he was waiting for you the entire time and cause thats just the way it is in the coven and if you want to belong you will except this forced mating that he doesn't even tell you he completed? and yet you never use your powers and are always rescued.

6. you halfheartedly tried to escape (and when I say tried I mean " but uncle why do i need to run and hide boo hoo hoo i don't want to leave my friends even though they are trying to force this mating on me and steal my powers and the coven would take all my choices from me! I don't want to leave my friends! I want to be normal! I want to stick my head in the sand and not listen to you who has protected me my entire life!") and yet proceeds to find a "secret" cabin (that took literally one night before her "BFF" finds her) and huddles in the corner whining and moaning about needing to be rescued by your aunt until the very BF who is part of the coven/whatever convinces you to go back to the very people trying to bind your powers and strip them from you. real smart.

7. Windingobat whatever guys. UGHHHH did the author literally add these evil night humans no one has ever heard about into the story just to try and make it look like Nate actually wants Cas for more than the power she will give him when they life bond? OMG she did!!! and does Cas actually, like for real, take 2 seconds and binds her life to Nate ( after 95% of the book was about her not having to bond) in order to give him enough power to AGAIN RESCUE THE IDIOT TWIT from her OWN STUPID DECISIONS!!!! OMFG SHE DOES!!!! And like literally these Windigobat guys want to do the same thing Nate and his coven/ pack/whatever wants to do and Cas just goes with it....UGHHH!

As if you can't tell already how I feel about this book but just in case....This book is a major let down. HUGE let down. This author had 2 series prior to this one that I absolutely loved, so to say I need a refund on this book should tell you how disappointing this read is that I don't even want it in my kindle. I am super hard on this author cause she has amazing books out and for her to put this crap out....Drives me up a wall. Whew. Need to breathe....and take a Valium. Damn it I wanted to like this book.

ARGGGGG so disappointed!!!!! REDO THIS BOOK FOR ALL YOUR FANS! CAUSE THIS IS CRAP!

WOW! This author has done it again! I'm looking forward to reading the next installment! I'm dying to find out how the story progresses. The characters are fun and the supporting ones are quirky, especially Whitney! LOVED her! Overall, a stellar book that deserves five glittery stars!

Witches, shapeshifters, and vampires all rolled into one mythological race are introduced in this addictive YA read.

We get to meet Cassie, a bit of an outcast, but also an exceptional witch. She’s been kept in the dark for so long that she can’t wait to pass her test and join the coven. Without her overbearing guardian’s permission, she takes and passes the test, starting a cascade of events (not all good). There’s mates, magic, and some really bad guys out there! All of this is a huge surprise to Cassie, but she somehow manages to keep her wits about her.

Her plucky best friend is also a highlight of the book that had me quickly flipping pages. Even her mistaken mate ended up growing on me as he proved himself to Cassie and the readers. By the end of the book I was dying to see a clean HEA materialize. Sadly, while we get a happy ending, you’re left wanting more. I’m happily addicted and dying to dive in to book 2!

3 to 3.5 stars, not a bad start to a series, a little harry potterish with a female main character. I think I will continue with this series.

B. Kristin McMichael’s The Witchling Apprentice is an amazing start to the Skinwalkers Witchling Series. I just loved this book. The story takes place after the last book in the Day Human Trilogy. Cassandra Booth is back in her village after secretly helping the Sidhe. She decides to take the test to become a Witches Apprentice early. She discovers that the entire town has been keeping secrets from her, and that she is part of a prophecy. The Witchling Apprentice is a contemporary fantasy suitable for young adults.

I love Cassie. She is destined to be a powerful witch. As she got older and her powers began to manifest, she never felt like she truly fit in. She only has a couple of friends, Whitney and Owen. Cassie’s parents died. She has been raised by her uncle John. Her aunt Maria is in trouble for taking Cassie out of the village; luckily, they didn’t know they were in the Fae Realm or her punishment would have been worse. Maria has been sent away on missions outside of their village and not around to help Cassie with all the fallout after her test. As Cassie discovers the things that have been withheld from her, it becomes harder to know who she can trust. Cassie is a great character. She is smart, brave, and clever.

I enjoyed Nathaniel Bay’s character. He was friends with Cassie as a child. He became part of the popular crowd and no longer seemed interested in her until she took her test. It takes a while to figure out his allegiances. He is a powerful character that is to be reckoned with.

B. Kristin McMichael does a fantastic job with every aspect of this book. The plot was amazing. It was full of mystery and twist. The conflict is intense and believable. The characters are well-developed. The setting is descriptive. The book was exciting from being to end. I feel like it has been awhile since I have had a book hangover from not getting enough sleep because I could not put The Witchling Apprentice down. It was well worth the lack of sleep. I cannot wait until the next book.

Cassie has grown-up an outsider in her hometown. Partly because no one knows who her daddy is. Partly because she was raised by her eccentric aunt and grumpy uncle. And finally because her powers scare the begeebees out of people. She believes that if she takes and passes the test to become a witchling apprentice early she will finally find her place. Instead she finds more questions and a mate that she doesn’t want. How to get rid of him and still take her place in the coven is her main concern. Instead she honestly should be worried about things that go bump in the night.

Cassie is an interesting gal. She accepts all the changes that come with being in a coven with an open mind. All but one- the mating parting. I honestly don’t get why she can accept night and day humans but not he paring of the two. I felt that she was protesting too much.

Nate is a good mate. He is kind and understanding of what Cassie is going thorough. Okay, so for the last 8 years he had to stay away from Cassie but that was due to his alpha. He is not only understanding, he protects her- from evil and from herself. Cassie makes some mistakes. Things happen and she gets kidnapped not once but twice by two different groups. Nate is there both times, to save the day. Cassie isn’t always the nicest to him. I get her resentment but like the song goes- let it go.

The Witchling Apprentice is an intriguing start to a spin-off series. You do not have to read the original story to understand what is going on in the tale. I didn’t and had no trouble following the plot. It does make you want to go back and read the original series if you go t the time. Here is hoping that some questions will be answered in the next book.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

The Witchling Apprentice by B. Kristin McMichael

There was so much about this book that I liked. I liked Cassie and Nate as characters. I enjoyed the interactions between them. I also liked the plot and the mystery was fun.

There also, unfortunately, were things that I didn't like. This is book one in the Skinwalkers Witchling series but I mostly felt I was missing out on some important details. The plot became empty when none of those blanks were filled in for me. Turns out, this is actually a spin-off of other series that probably needed to be read first. I can only hope the answers were in there. In addition, it was very difficult to keep track of such a large cast of characters. It felt like the author also lost track of them. Characters that were identified early on as important disappeared without explanation for multiple consecutive chapters.

This is the story of a witch who is trying to rise to the position of an apprentice in order to escape from her overly protective uncle's grasp. In order to become an apprentice, she must pass a potions making test. By passing, she will also be fully inducted into her town's coven and be allowed access to the townspeoples' secrets. However, Cassandra Booth realizes that joining the coven will not be as easy or satisfying as she believed.

The author tries to depict Cassandra as a powerful witch amidst people who have been brainwashed by the coven's unorthodox practices. However, Cassandra ends up coming off as a contrary girl who makes trouble for everyone with her decisions that do not change the end result of her "predicament." Instead of a powerful witch, she seems more like someone extremely lucky with potions at the most pivotal moments.

Beyond simply the main character, the plot was somewhat tepid. Only a few noteworthy scenes occurred. The book mainly consisted of the main character complaining about having her lifelong wish being granted, and pining for her aunt to come home to save the day. This monotony was expounded by the small range of settings. The budding love triangle had potential but did not impact the plot much.

This book introduces the reader to an interesting and unconventional world but does not exploring it enough.

B. Kristin McMichael is a new author for me, but based on her The Witchling Apprentice (Skinwalkers Witchling Book 1), I’m promising myself that we will become well acquainted. This novel truly is, quite simply, wonderful. “Witches, potions, and magical spells” and so much more. A wonderful introduction for the lead character - and the reader - to the world of magic and the paranormal, and to the rest of the series to come. This tale had just what I wanted and was well written and with a great plot and great cast of characters. Cassandra Booth is perfectly crafted and her supporting cast is also superb. All in all, a wonderful series start. Definitely recommended.

*This book was received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*

I enjoyed the plot of this book and it developed at a good pace. There were also some good plot twists and surprises. I did, however, find the main character Cassie quite annoying at times especially as she tended to rush headlong into things. Despite this, I am excited to read the next installment as many questions were left unanswered including about Cassie's heritage, the coven's secrets and the mysteries behind the night humans. I am dying to know more and can't wait to see where the story goes.

This book starts an amazing trilogy in which B. Kristen McMichael tells the tale of courage, betrayal, sacrifice and young love.

This first book focuses on the main characters Cassie and her first crush Nate. I loved these two characters and the dynamic that flowed between them. I thought the author did well to capture the resentment that Cassie felt being left behind and the cockiness that Nate now has being the 'cool kid'. I liked that Nate had a soft side though, that there was more to him than meets the eye. Cassie also had a lot to deal with as she learnt what was under the surface of her community and I loved how Nate supported her though this process, but don't think for a minute it was not a rocky road.

I thought the author did an amazing job at designing a world that the reader could easily slip inside. She builds a paranormal world, slightly skewed from our own, in which witches, skinwalkers, wendigos and seers battle for what matters most, power and peace. But unfortunately peace comes at a cost and only Cassie can decide if it is too high.

This book was a fantastic, entertaining read that is suitable for YA audiences with no unsuitable content. It will definitely make you want to pick up the rest of the books in the series.

Read the other series first

Full disclosure I hadn't read any of the other series by this author before starting this one. I regret it. Characters and types of beasts are brought in and you are super confused. But if you had read the other books you would know enough to keep up.
Beyond that it's an adorable coming of age story where romance is the last thing you see. I kind of wish it has more in the way of mates but maybe in the next books.
Perfect for lovers of fantasy, witches , and all manner of creatures.

Great YA paranormal fantasy read
I had this book on my TBR pile not sure where or when I got. This is a new author for me as I have not read any of her previously written books. Although this is touted as book one in a series, it doesn’t have a major cliffhanger, however it does allude to more to come. This a perfect YA read as the age of the main characters are around sixteen. The characters were different enough to be interesting and the twists in the plot kept you glued to the pages. I could reasonably recommend this book to all YA readers of paranormal fantasy.

I received a copy of this book from netgalley for review.

I've read a handful of books by the author already, including the blue eyes series. This one is my favorite so far. I love the characters and can't wait to find out what happens next. I won't ruin the book for anyone by writing too much about it. There was plenty of magic and a bit of mystery by not knowing who to trust. An easy, fun read.

Great beginning crappy ending

Cassie, our main character, was initially a smart and intelligent character that questioned everything and challenged the plans that various clan elders had for her. So why would a smart and intelligent person go away with strangers and be surprised that they wanted to use her also and in more sinister ways then her own clan. This story had holes that were to big to plug.

Wow! I finished the book in one sitting. I am already searching for the next installment. This is a beautifully written book. I love the perfect concoction of high school crush, friendship, some twists and sense of mystery for the most poweful witch in the clan seems to have known very little of her own family history and power. Good job to the author!

So, this was a cute, easy story. It was fairly well written. There were points with weird adjectives and phrases, but the plot was compelling. It definitely helped this book transcend any of its weaker grammatical points. I would definitely be interested in continuing this series and reading others by this author.

Covens, blood and deceit

A good read but slow in places. Would have been good to have some explanations ie why is the Seer so important? The characters are well developed but the heroine is really a bit too trusting especially with all the deceit she has already been around. Will probably read the rest when they come on special.
I got this in a giveaway for an honest review.

Interesting read. I found it odd that Cassie was so naive about her world. And that no one ever spilled the beans about some of the weird society rules in which the witches and shapeshifters lived. the night walkers vs day walkers. Otherwise a lot more for the reader to get engrossed about to find out what was going on.

This book is the first for this series but the seventh of another related series that I've never read. And boy did that make things confusing. It also didn't help that the main character spent most of the book confused, too. I mean, I like a mystery but this was more annoying than intriguing. Basically a whole book of "wait, what?". Not my cup of tea.

This book had a really slow start, and I felt confused through the first chapters, much like the MC. It does get better, and the story is different from others of this genre. The character development is good and the plot has some decent spins. I cant say I will continue to read this series but I can say ita not a bad read.

Good storyline and a few unexpected twists but personally for me there wasn't enough descriptive situations and character descriptions. And I'm confused,if she had these powers that enabled her see into the soul of a person, allowing her to know thier secrets why didn't she just use them when she was in trouble. e.g. on the coven to find out what they where keeping from her or on her cousin

I enjoyed it to the end.

I didn't like the way it ended. She was all happy, warm and safe and then it says she is still running in the next book. Too disjointed at the end. I also wanted more answers sooner in the story but the character did too.
