Tragedy has brought Micaela Burgos back to her hometown of Sleepy Hollow. It's been six years since she chose to live with her affluent father in Miami instead of her history-obsessed eccentric mother. And now her mother is dead.

But while Sleepy Hollow was made immortal by literature, the town is real. So are its prejudices and hatred, targeting Mica's Cuban family and the secrets of their heritage that her mother obsessed over. But ghostly voices whisper in the wind, questioning whether her mother’s death might not have been an accident after all, and Mica knows there's a reason she's here.

With the help of two very different guys—who pull at her heart in very different ways—Micaela must uncover the hidden secret of Sleepy Hollow…before she meets her mother's fate.

A sudden death snatches Micaela out of her senior-year-state-of-mind in sunny Florida, to slap her down in the sleepy little hollow of her past. Never popular with the locals, the eerily empty station is exactly the homecoming she expected. Her mother’s beliefs had always deviated from popular opinion, ostracizing Micaela by association. Perhaps Mami could be a bit peculiar, but for the town’s people to be personally offended by her claim to be a direct descendant of Washington Irving is preposterous.

Counting on compassion from her childhood comrade, Bram, and hoping for help from family friend, Betty Anne; her plan is to quickly take care of business for a rapid return back to her real life. But Micaela was pulled here for a bigger purpose. Legends are coming alive, secrets stuffed into far away corners are seeping out and the myth of a historical treasure may be true.

Resolving to squelch suspicions, to solve the mystery once and for all, Micaela soon sees that someone else has the same goal, but for a greedy reason. After speaking with the few folks unable to maintain the collective stony silence, the only lesson learned was that essentially everyone has lied to her. With only herself to trust, self-doubt surfaces; she’s not sure of her own sanity right now.

One of the first stories that I fell in love with was Mr. Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and it remains a fond favorite. It’s fair to say that I may be a bit biased about any twist of that tale, but I reveled in the reimagination of not just the haunting headless horseman, but also of Washington Irving and another awesome author of the same time. Gripping and keeping me guessing, Wake the Hollow galloped out of the gate, tearing through the narrative to a heart-stopping halt.

I really enjoyed this book that was kind of a new take on the whole Headless Horseman and Sleepy Hollow story by Washington Irving. Also a look at the author, Irving, and his history. This is the kind of story that grabs me and makes me want to look more into the actual history and any of the theories that were put forth.

The main character is Mica Burgos. She spent the first 12 years of her life living in Sleepy Hollow with her parents. Her mother was kind of known as the crazy lady in the town, always researching crazy theories about Washington Irving, the author that the town claims as their most important figure. They even have two families that are said to be descended from branches of his family, and they are the ones that made Mica's life miserable. When her father had the chance to move his family to Miami after becoming very successful, Mica's mother chose to stay, and Mica left and didn't ever really contact her mother again. Until one day she receives a cryptic note from her mother, and shortly after, her mother is found dead. Unable to get back until weeks after the funeral, Mica comes back to a mystery. Her father is out of the country on business, and he gets a condo/townhome set up for Mica and her nanny/family assistant to live there while she goes back to settle her mom's affairs.

She is met by her best friend from back then, a boy named Bram. Bram was the only person who seemed to give her a chance, even going against his own family, one of the two descended families, to be her friend and support her. But he seems to have feelings that are more than just friendly, and Mica knows that she will leave Sleepy Hollow again as soon as she figures out just what the mess her mother left for her is. So many things are happening. First, Mica has always seen ghosts or heard voices, something her mother used to do. And when she gets to town, she immediately begins to feel like she is being followed. There are hints that maybe her mother's death wasn't a natural heart attack as she was told. A famous journal of Washington Irving was stolen, and everyone seems to blame Mica's mother for it. But Mica doesn't find the journal, although she does start finding pages that could belong to it. As well as finding a family tree/ancestry chart, that shows a possible link from Mica's family to the whole big deal in the town. It all relates to a theory that the new student teacher in town, Dane Boracich brings up in his first lesson in class. And there is something else strange about this new teacher, he seems to be following Mica.

And things just get spookier from there. At one point, Mica thinks that she may actually see the headless horseman, although it seems he is after someone who is threatening her. There seem to be all different people around town who have some kind of reason or possibility of being the way that her mother possibly died. Then there are the journal pages that Mica's mom has left all over for her. No matter how many times she tries to call, Mica can't seem to get her father on the phone, and things get even weirder when her father's assistant leaves her all alone. She goes to stay with her mom's friend and their old neighbor. Trying to get into her old house is difficult when the realtor with the key won't call her back. The police won't answer any of her questions either. Mica will have to decide who to trust. Her old friend Bram, although he comes from a family that could be at fault with her mother's death, not to mention his creepy roommate that comes from the other family, and had always been hateful to Mica since she turned him down years ago as well. And then there is the new teacher, Dane. When Mica finds out that maybe he isn't exactly who he says he is, can she trust him? All of it will come to a head at the big annual HollowEve event where Bram will get to play the part of the Headless Horseman, and Mica will learn not only who she can trust, but what exactly her mother was trying to hide for her to find, and just how deadly finding it could be.

A great retelling/reimagining of both Sleepy Hollow, as well as possibly Washington Irving's life. I'm now very intrigued to go learn more about Irving. I like how the author of this book included a reading guide at the end, as well as giving the steps she took for writing this. The ending is a good one, although in a way, there is a bit of an opening left, giving us a peek at what might be coming up for Mica in the future, or at least it made me want to know more!

“I need to know what was so important about it that she couldn’t move to Miami with me and my dad. There’s forces not letting me leave until I do.”

This was an okay story, but it struggled to hold my interest.

I felt quite sorry for Mica in this, having lost her mother so suddenly and then being haunted by apparitions. She didn’t have the best taste in men though.

The storyline in this started to lose me quite early on, and I struggled to stay interested. We had Mica trying to deal with her mother’s death, whilst searching for some sort of old manuscript which she didn’t even really know existed, whilst occasionally seeing ghosts and being chased by someone on a horse. We also got a bit of an odd romance where Mica started to have feelings for someone who she initially thought was creepy!

The ending to this was okay, but I didn’t quite believe who the killer turned out to be.

After six years Micaela Burgos is now returning to the town of Sleepy Hollow after she received news of her mother's death. Mica had chosen to leave the town and live with her father in Miami when her mother became obsessed with history and ignoring her daughter when Mica was only twelve and needed a parent in her life that paid attention to her.

The town of Sleepy Hollow was made immortal by literature but it's a very real place that has Mica drawn into figuring out just what her mother had been obsessed with finding out about their lineage and what really happened to her. Mica is haunted by her dreams and the ghosts of the past during her investigation into her mother's murder and the town is all on a treasure hunt to claim the reward for anything revealing info into the author of Sleepy Hollow's past.

I was a bit back and forth with this story as I was reading. I really enjoyed the setting and incorporating the story of Sleepy Hollow into a new modern story but there seemed to be a few holes in the story here and there and a bit confusing to start out as to where it was really going.

For me personally I think what I'd like to have seen was to forget about any kind of romance aspect being added in and focus more on the investigation/paranormal aspect of the book. I think with Mica just losing her mother it felt off to have her worried about the next cute boy she meets throughout the story. And with that being added I think the "ghosts" of the story didn't get enough attention that they deserved to make it really give the spooky feel that it should have had.

Overall, 3.5 stars for Wake the Hollow. While I enjoyed it I think it could've have been done a bit better to rate higher in my opinion.

I really enjoyed this book! I grew up in New York, so I vaguely remember hearing The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but I wasn't really an enthusiast. I think this book would appeal to people who like Sleepy Hollow lore but it's fine for newbies as well. It's a really well-researched ghost story/mystery with interesting bits of history too. But don't take that to mean it wasn't fast-paced. By the end, I was rushing to get to the ending.

Wake the Hollow was everything that I wanted in a “Sleepy Hollow”-inspired book. I was one of the kids that enjoyed being forced to read the story of the headless horseman in elementary school around Halloween and knew I had to read this book.

You guys, Sleepy Hollow is a real place! I’m not sure why it never dawned on me to look it up and see if there was actually a town named Sleepy Hollow, but there is. I’m probably the last to know, but I so want to go after reading this book. I just started watching the show Sleepy Hollow on Hulu, and the tale of Ichabod Crane and all things Irving might become my new obsession. Triana gave a lot of background surrounding Irving, a lot of things I didn’t know. One of my favorite classics is Frankenstein, and I was excited to hear some history there and the connection she made. The history, creepy and enthralling, kept me interested as much as the new story surrounding Michaela Burgos.

Mica was terrified of becoming her mother. She returned to the Hollow to try and reconnect with the woman that she had left for Miami six years prior, but that wasn’t the only reason. Her mother’s death shook her up, especially the note she received six weeks earlier, demanding that she come back as soon as possible. The mother-daughter relationship fought against death, and I loved the connection that they had. No, it did not scream normal—her mom had an obsession with creepy, handmade dolls, for crying out loud—but nothing in Mica’s life ever had. Mica found strength in herself that she didn’t know existed and discovered a completely different person than the one that had arrived on the train in Tarrytown months ago.

I couldn’t figure out who to fall in love with. I met Bram first and thought he would be the obvious choice—then Dane came into the picture. The whole time, while trying to figure out what exactly was going on in such an interesting town, my heart didn’t know who to trust. Bram had the old best friend thing on his side and the do anything for Mica thing going on, but Dane was the new guy, the enigma. Trust me, Triana will keep you guessing and gasping until the end.

Wake the Hollow kept me on my toes. It had mystery, unexplainable romance, history like I’ve never read before, and a main character that I would love to see more of. Like it’s inspiration, it will be a story that won’t be forgotten any time soon.

Thank you to Entangled Teen for providing a free ebook copy of Wake the Hollow By: Gaby Triana in exchange for an honest review. Also, thank you to YA Reads Blog Tours for having me on the blog tour!

Short Review Summary:
Well done mystery, perfect for an October/Halloween/Fall read if you want atmoshphere instead of scary!

Wake the Hollow is such a fun book! A little bit predictable, but very entertaining and I loved it! One of the things I liked best about the book is Micaela. She is a great MC, even though she's a little oblivious at times. I really felt for her though, especially when it came to her mother's death and the guilt she felt from when she chose to live with her dad.
#ExcellentMC

I love The Legend of Sleepy Hollow story so this book is of course right up my alley! I love the Sleepy Hollow setting and how things are incorporated into the story. There's another thing I want to mention, but due to spoilers I won't. I'll just say that I'm a big fan of classic horror and gothic stories so there is something else incorporated into this story that I wasn't expecting, but I LOVED it.
#YouHadMeAtSleepyHollow

Also Wake the Hollow is one of those books that makes you want to look up real facts. I'm super curious now about Washington Irving's life. I would love to find out what facts used in this novel are true. I really don't know anything about Irving.
#INeedToReadMoreBiographies

Overall I had a lot of fun reading Wake the Hollow! It's such an entertaining read and it would be a perfect choice for an October/Halloween/Fall read. It's not scary, so don't worry my friends who aren't into horror!
#CallingAllYAMysteryFans

I recommend Wake the Hollow for fans of The Madman's Daughter series, gothic novels, and anyone looking for an atmospheric read this fall!

I thought this book would grab me like Sleepy Hallow the TV show did. I felt it was a good book but I was not as captivated as I was with the TV show. Mica does not want to go home but return home. I was confused a bit in the beginning. For me, the story took a while to build up. I think I just expected more from this book and these characters. I think the book was well written but I wanted more. The story did not grab me right at the beginning as I thought it would when I decided to read this book.

Wake The Hollow!!! First things first: I received an ARC of this book from Entangled through NetGalley.
The book came out august 2nd. And I highly recommend it.

But while Sleepy Hollow was made immortal by literature, the town is real. I just finished this amazing book. My faith in this story wavered a bit at the end but a few twists and turns and I'm back to loving everything about this book.

I just love the whole story, the writing and the setting of this. I love how the story developed, every little twist and turn. It kept me entertained and kept the tension til the last page. And the mystery part was also so very well done, same with the supernatural stuff. So yay, for amazing storytelling.

Loved the characters. Especially Micaela and Dane (or whatever his real name is). I also really loved Betty Ann and how she took Micaela in and took care of her. And I'm glad she turned out to be the one person she could really trust, I was worried there a bit. I wasn't to keen with Bram, this isn't really a ship kind of thing. It's just that his personality rubs me the wrong way. Just no.

When it comes to relationships, it wasn't as important to me (I just didn't want Micaela to end up with Bram), I was more intrigued about Micaela reconnecting with her mother. Yes, she is dead, but I still feel like at the end of the story Miceala understood her mother so much more and had a much better view of her than in the beginning of the story. And I also cared much more about what happened to Miceale's mother, what was the deal with the journal and what was even going on. And I'm glad the story focused more on that than on the love triangle, that was obviously there but it wasn't as prominent. Thank god.

Overall, I really loved it. Duh!!!

It should be known, first and foremost, that I'm a sucker for anything related to Sleepy Hollow. I grew up addicted to the wonderfully chilling story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. So it's no surprise that when Gaby Triana's book made its way onto my radar, I snatched it up without hesitation. Sleepy Hollow is steeped in such rich lore. I had high hopes that Triana would put her own spin on it. Spoiler alert: I was right.

First off, I loved that this book wasn't simply a retelling of the same story. While it definitely borrows some of the atmosphere and the tension, Micaela's experiences are on a level all their own. I could feel the anxiety on the page from the moment that Mica stepped foot into her childhood home. True to its roots, the Sleepy Hollow here has this overall aura of the supernatural. Things that might have felt odd anywhere else, feel completely normal. Triana had no problem convincing me that Mica's life was destined to be special, and I was definitely on board.

As events unfolded, this brilliant sense of doubt started to overcome me. Mica didn't know who to trust, and to be honest neither did I. Which was so wonderful. There are plenty of times where I've figured out an ending well before it comes to fruition. In this case, I was ecstatic about the fact that I had no idea where things were going. Mica was rushing pell-mell into the unknown, and all I could do was hold on tight. The paranormal part of this, mixed in with the expertly woven mystery, created a book that I just couldn't put down. I was so terribly annoyed every time I was interrupted while reading this. You could have cut the tension with a knife.

Now, I admit that the ending left me a little cold. I'm not sure how I wanted this to end, and it's possible that I was just too invested to ever really be happy with whatever happened, but it didn't vibe for me. The good news is that this barely registered on my overall scale for this book. Wake The Hollow had me so swept up, that I wasn't really bothered. I was more upset that it had come to an end.

As a reader , you learn to discover topics and themes that will become favourites to read about - no matter what the setting of the book is. One of my favourite things is "Sleepy Hollow". I love the legend and any books that have the slightest hint of a rendition or about the characters of Sleepy Hollow - I will read. Hence my reading of Wake the Hollow by Gaby Triana. Micaela has just come back home after moving away years ago to live with her father in Miami when her parents separated as her mother decided not to follow them and remain in Sleepy Hollow. Her mother's whole life has been about the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and discovering the true ancestors of Washington Irving as it was rumoured he had a child out of wedlock but nobody could prove it. With the town built on old blood and history , there are people and families out there who do not want the truth to be revealed and will go to lengths to make sure it never sees the light of the day as the truth could be worth millions. Mica's mother has always believed that they are the true descendants , but what will happen when she stumbles upon reseatch that can prove her theory and turns up dead ? As Mica tries to get to the bottom of her Mother's death, she is stonewalled at every turn - is there bigger things at play that don't want her to find out the truth ?I have to admit the ending of this book in one way I did see it coming but in another twist , I was like Noooooooo when the actual bad guys were revealed - I have to admit I was a tad disappointed in one of the choices. Overall, however if you are a fan of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and want a fresh new look at the history of the author and his background , check out Gaby Triana's new book "Wake the Hollow".

I received this book through NetGalley as a granted wish by the published Entagled: Teen. I also got it in exchange for an honest review. I'm thanking NetGalley and Entangled: Teen for granting me the wish and providing me with the copy of this book.

Hello old friend!! I've never read a book about Sleepy Hollow, but this was like meeting an old friend. It was such an easy introduction, I could say the book and me were like merging liquid. It was so smooth and I loved that fact. Some books are so confusing, you have to read like 60% of the book before you understand the story. This book is definitely on my favourite list!!

Wake the Hollow has a very interesting storyline. It has a nicely balanced build up and a breathtaking plot twist. I can say I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING =O The last part of the story was so thrilling to read I sometimes forgot to breath. I felt my eyes widen and me getting closer to my eReader. So plot-wise is was a very good book. I like books that take my breath away, this one certainly did. It made my heart beat faster and made me want to read quicker and quicker. But now I'm a bit sad that it's over.... =[

I loved Micaela's character very much, we could've been besties. She struggles a lot with her gift and her resentment of past choices. But she is a very strong girl with excellent instincts. She has a gift though, she has to learn to control it in order to stay alive, will she succeed? Like her I don't have an easy family [life], so I know how she feels. No, my mother is still alive, and I'm happy for that, but I've had a lot of rough bumps with my family too. Where the story shocked me was the role of her father in the end of the book. I can't imagine the feeling she must have had when she found out.

Betty Anne, old 'neighbour', is a very kind character. I love her quirkiness. But she is so kind and caring for Micaela. I was glad Mica had someone like Betty Anne in the story. We all need a Betty Anne as our neighbour and friend.

Jonathan Enger, his name is funny for me. Creep in Dutch is engerd, so that was a perfect surname for him. Because he's a creep, obnoxious and annoying. I won't explain him anymore to prevent spoilers.

20160802_170139000_iOS

Bram Durant, best friend of Micaela. Got the hots for her, grew up with her. He is a great friend in the story and cares a lot for Micaela. This is not all there is about Bram. He and Jonathan live together in a small apartment. Both families claim they are the direct descendants of Washington Irving. Their families hold a lot of secrets, and not just about the history of Sleepy Hollow and Washington Irving. Want to know more about those secrets? Go read this awesome book!!

Dane Borarich the teaching assistant in her American Literature class.. Handsome, Harvard grad student, has eyes for Micaela a lot. Is he who he says he is? What does he have to hide? Will he be on her side or try to silence her... for good?

I did feel sad some more throughout the book, because of some events. If you've read the book and see my Origin Story. you will get my point.

So all in all I loved it. The plot was good, the pacing good, I love the characters, it has a good amount of shocking moments, a great amount of creepiness and a good dose of feelings.Another nice thing about the book is that every chapter stars with a quote, I like that!! So I give this book 5 out of 5 quills!! ink-and-feather-quill-clipart ink-and-feather-quill-clipart ink-and-feather-quill-clipart ink-and-feather-quill-clipart ink-and-feather-quill-clipart

Thank you to Entangled Teen and Netgalley for eArc in exchange for an honest review.

So where do I start, how about I read this book from start to finish today. Seriously loved it, it took me a little bit to get into it, but once the story got going I couldn't stop I had to know what was going on.

Micaela returns to Sleepy Hollow after learning about the death of her mother. She knows something is going on, because she received a note from her mother begging her to come back just days before her death. Micaela knows there is a deeper issue because her mother sent the note to her best friend and not to Micaela.

Once back in Sleepy Hollow she learns that one of Washing Irving's journals is missing and that many suspect her mother was the culprit. Mica stays with her childhood friend Bram, and is immediately torn between him and the handsome assistant teacher Dane.

As she learns more and more Mica begins to suspect her mother didn't die accidentally, and just how involved in it all is her father?

I can't say that I shipped either love interest, but I was mildly shocked by the ending, and yeah you know me no spoilers. However, I will say that someone won me over by the end, and that ending ahhhh.... It only shows one book on goodreads, but I can't believe this is the end. Not with the way it ended it is just begging for another story and I for one sincerely hope, beg, plead that there be another!

All of that aside Washington Irving and Mary Shelley in a book together, like words cannot express how much I love this, like I mean love this! This retelling or modern Sleepy Hollow story was the bomb! I mean, well you have to know how deeply I love Frankenstein to understand how happy this paring makes my heart! I didn't even know it was a dream come true until I read this and I hope that, yes that makes me so happy.

I love how Mica grew during this book, really grew into herself and became comfortable with all that she could do.

Also loved the descendants of Irving's family and how serious everyone in Sleepy Hollow was about recreating the book. Like that is a festival I would and I mean totally would go see people dressed up as Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman! It was almost like the author took things out of my head that I didn't even know was in there, and put them all in a book for me. So go read this now!!! Thank me later!

Micaela's mother passed away and the circumstances of her death are suspicious. After receiving a short note from her mother, which was a cry for help that came too late, Mica returns to the place she grew up in, Sleepy Hollow. The town is famous because of the classic by Washington Irving and the stories about his life are still very much on everyone's mind. Her mother was obsessed with the past and Mica doesn't feel welcome in the town. Her mother was strange and the town's inhabitants accused her of the theft of an incredibly precious item. Can Mica find out what her mother was doing and did she actually steal anything?

While Mica is trying to find clues about her mother's life project she discovers more about her heritage, about the relationship between her parents and the things her mother was working on. Was she really crazy or did she stumble upon something groundbreaking? Mica needs help with her search and she gets it from two very different guys. They're both looking out for her, but who should she choose and can they both be trusted? Will Mica be able to finish what her mother so bravely started?

Wake The Hollow is a fantastic gripping book set in Sleepy Hollow. I immediately loved reading about the town's interesting history. Gaby Triana has clearly done her research and I loved that she's chosen this interesting setting for a spooky mystery. The story fascinated me from beginning to end and I loved the ghosts from the past. Mica gets scare after scare, but she doesn't want to stop looking. She's determined to finish what she started, something I liked a lot. She's naïve and she knows it, but that doesn't mean she can't complete a difficult and complex project. I enjoyed watching her learn to stand up for herself and to trust her own instincts.

Gaby Triana has a great way of delivering tension. Wake The Hollow is a vivid adrenaline rush most of the time, but the reader also gets a chance to breathe every now and then. There's a good rhythm which makes the story accessible and easy to read. I loved the mysteries and the secrets and couldn't wait to find out more. I flew through the pages and the suspense kept me glued to my seat. I loved both the creepy scenes and the romance aspect, they go very well together. The ending is surprising and fitting. Wake The Hollow is an amazing action-packed story.

Mica left Sleepy Hollow with her father and hasn't looked back. Her mother recently died and she has to return to the town and people she left far behind. Her mom was a researcher. She was obsessed with finding a journal. One that is widely sought after.

Bram is Mica's childhood friend. One who confessed his love before she left. Upon her return she notices Bram is different now. He's grown, and she can't help but admit how attractive he is. Then there's Dane, her new teacher's assistant in one of her classes. He's pretty hot as well. Both guys are there for her. Both wanting to help. She's not sure if she can trust either of them, though.

Secrets are revealed, and Mica is being chased. She sees ghosts. Voices forever follow her. Will she find out the truth of her mother's death? Or will she become a victim as well?

I'm a strict romance reader. This book was more thriller/mystery for me, with a little mix of romance. That being said, I did enjoy it. Not only Mica's story, but the tale of Sleepy Hollow that is woven throughout it. This story really keeps you waiting with each turning page to find out what happens next. This was a good YA read.

I am fortunate to have been provided the opportunity to read an advance copy, and I devoured it. I am more than a "reluctant reader," I have severe dyslexia making reading a grueling task. Only a handful of books can compel me to delve into them. Authors such as Stephen King, Michael Crichton, and JK Rowling have grasped me with their books and taken me into their worlds. Gaby Triana also has that unique quality and pulled me into her story, not kicking-and-screaming, but screaming at the kick of a book. I adored how she wove classic literary legend and ghost lore into a contemporary thread. Several times I found myself hitting good ol' Google to see if what she was inferring, the backstory's plausibility, was in fact, real. She hooked me well. I am grateful for how her characters interact, grow, and connive. Triana's voice and dialog is genuine, not cluttered with overwrought prose that plagues many contemporary YA novels. Her characters feel real, the environment feels real, the story's plot feels real, and was really chilling, fun, and a worthy successor to the Sleepy Hollow legend.

Wake the Hollow kept me on my toes. It had mystery, unexplainable romance, history like I’ve never read before, and a main character that I would love to see more of. Like it’s inspiration, it will be a story that won’t be forgotten any time soon.

OMG!!! This retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow surpassed all my wildest expectations and then some. The cover is stunning and the author's creative take on this ghostly read is simply outstanding. I was on the edge of my seat throughout this read that captivated me from beginning to end. This is an ominous read that will delight and scare you.

Um...no.

ETA: The one thing I did like about this book was the Washington Irving/Mary Shelley romance plot line, although I feel like the book could have used an author's note at the end clarifying which parts of the story have possible historical accuracy and which parts were fictional . I did take the time to Google it this morning, so I'll give points to the author for piquing my interest.

I can still remember hearing the story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman as a kid and loving every minute of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Wake the Hollow takes this classic story from American literature and gives it a unique spin with a little bit of history and a whole lotta of mystery.

After the death of her mother Mica returns to her childhood home in Sleepy Hollow, where she reconnects with her former best friend, Bram and learns about the mystery surrounding Washington Irving from student teacher, Dane. But not everyone is happy to see Mica return as her mother was kind of the town outcast, a woman who was determined to the point of madness (according to some) to prove that her family was descended from the creator of the famous legend, Washington Irving.

Soon Mica is having strange dreams and is haunted by more than just the memories of her past. Add in a missing diary of Washington Irving, sightings of the Headless Horseman, and secrets from the past and what we get is an entertaining mystery with Mica determined to find answers.

As Mica investigates her mother’s death and the secrets she was keeping further, things only grow more complicated and frustrating for her. Mica is confused and doesn’t know who she should trust. I really felt for Mica because as a reader, I didn’t know who she should trust either. Every time it seemed like she was closer to getting an answer, a new twist would pop up. I can only imagine how Mica felt alone in a town full of people she doesn’t really know all that well anymore trying to work things through on her own. Everyone seems to have secrets and motives. The author did a great job making everyone a suspect in this mystery. I love mysteries and couldn’t wait to see how it would resolve itself.

But the story was more than just a mystery though, in my opinion. At the heart of the story is Mica and her relationship with her mother. It brings Mica “home” setting events into motion. Mica and her mother had a complicated relationship due to the fact that they didn’t quite understand each other and were separated when Mica was young. There were a lot of unresolved issues between the two and Mica struggles with this as she learns more about her mother and her life.

In her mother’s defense, I do have to say that Mica seems to have a lot of complicated relationships though…she needs some help with communication.

Anyway, I enjoyed my visit to Sleepy Hollow and the mystery of the story and hope to read more from Gaby Triana.

Six years ago Micaela chose to live with her father in Miami. Because of this choice she had to leave her mother behind. Mica is glad that she left Sleepy Hollow and never really looked back until her mother's death makes her return to find out what truly happened. As soon as Mica steps off the train she gets the feeling she's being watched. Mica hears voices and sees ghosts. The people who live in Sleepy Hollow didn't think much of her mother and they passed that judgment on to Mica, so they aren't welcoming. Are the ghosts there to help her find out what Mica needs to know or not?

Mica is a young girl who has a lot to deal with. Her mother reached out to her for help and Mica feels guilty for not supporting her more. Her mother was a history fanatic and needs Mica to further explore her findings. Mica sees things that scare her and she has to get over her fears. Mica has a hard time deciding who to trust and sometimes things aren't what they seem. I think she was brave at the moments that counted. Mica has a clear quest and she's determined to get to the bottom of things, I liked that very much about her. Mica could have easily returned to Miami but she faced all of her questions with great courage.

Gaby Triana's story couldn't have taken place in a better setting than at Sleepy Hollow. This little town gives the story the creepiness and the historical foundation it needs. If you look up Sleepy Hollow on the internet you will find out that it is considered by many to be one of the most haunted places in the world. This knowledge gives an extra layer to the story. I loved reading about the history of the town and enjoyed the fact that the Headless Horseman and Washington Irving also played an important part in the story.

Gaby Triana has clearly done her research and knows a great deal about Sleepy Hollow, which results in an incredible, believable and spooky story. The mystery and the suspense had me hooked from the first page. In the acknowledgments of Wake the Hollow you will find that Gaby Traina's mother finds that from the moment Mica steps off the train it feels like watching a movie. This is exactly what Wake the Hollow felt like for me as well. I would be thrilled if this story would ever be made into a movie, or better yet a TV-series, so I could follow Mica's journey for a longer period of time. Wake the Hollow is a story I highly recommend to anyone who loves ghost stories, Halloween and small-town history.

I've been looking forward to reading this book for months because, as a child, I was enamoured with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow...yes, the Disney version that played on TV every year around Halloween. I even made time to take Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow off my TBR and on to my Read shelf in preparation.

Gaby Triana's modern retelling and expansion of the classics story grabbed my attention far more than Irving's actual book had, in part because it took the best of the story I'd always loved, but added exciting new twists and turns at every possible point. Every chapter begins with a short quotation from Irving's original story and the relationships between Mica, Bram, and Dane correspond to characters people will recognize from Irving's version flawlessly. In addition, the idea that the town of Sleepy Hollow revels in re-enacting the story every year, with young men vying for the role of the Headless Horseman shows Triana's love for the town and the story. However, it is the ways in which the novel veers from what I expected to speak to the rumors that plagued Irving, another famous writer, and Mica and her mother and the supernatural elements that made this a true winner for me. The rumors that a white, male author and his female companion may have endured at the hands of one form of prejudice are universally understandable nearly 200 years after the fact, and thus, they help make the racial prejudice and stigma around mental health issues that Mica's mom lived with in Sleepy Hollow before her death something easier to understand for those who can't walk in her shoes as easily.

Finally, as a seasoned horror fanatic, I know I would've had no trouble reading this book along late in the middle of the night, but that doesn't mean that I don't admire Triana's ability to continually develop and build upon the suspense surrounding what happened to Mica's mom, who is stalking her, and the very real fear that Mica has no idea who she can trust with her personal safety and that of the documents she unearths in Sleepy Hollow. I mean, even though I heard that twists were to be expected and truly believed that I knew what was going on, I was surprised time and time again.

Finally, with a Cuban-American MC from a Cuban-American author, this book will be a great choice for anyone who is trying to up their diverse reads game this year.

I will say that I have never read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. All I really knew before going into this book is that it features a creepy headless guy atop a horse. Oh, and that it is a great Halloween story / costume.

But other than that, I can’t compare how the two stories correlate to one another. I can, however, say that this book is creepy and does seem to capture what I believe this retelling should hold.

I loved how the author incorporated Irving (the author of Sleepy Hollow) into her own twist. We get to see the legend as well as a sort of backstory for Irving and his possible scandals. It was definitely historically entertaining.

The plot was really enjoyable. The way the characters interacted brought the story alive. The death of her mother grabbed a spooky atmosphere to start off the plot. The main character struggles with what is real and what is in her head… i.e. ghosts. The author does a great job in bringing in the horror to the story. There were plenty of instances where I found myself a little spooked.

There are also plenty of secrets and mystery back in her home town. Her mother left an image that she now has to contend with. Overall, this book was a VERY high 4 out of 5 stars. The book was very enchanting, but I didn’t feel like it was over the top. Especially towards the end, action scenes take over your mind along with the horror and suspense of what could possibly come next. I enjoyed this book from cover to cover.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to explore a re-telling that normally isn’t touched on (cause I can’t think of another Sleepy Hollow one..). Especially around October and Halloween, this is a perfect book to add to your month’s TBR pile. And for those who may like a lil’ romance, you won’t be disappointed with this (possibly) scandalous love boat.

This one drew me in due to the town it will be in Sleepy Hollow which I am a fan of. I have not read any of her works before so this is also a double treat for me. It is filled with tons of mystery, mayhem, and two men that plays havoc sort a speak with a young girl's mind. Micaela is with her father but then she needs to go back to where she came from due to her mother's death. Two guys will also be in the picture with her not knowing who to trust especially with all that will go on. Bram and Dane each have their own role in this story. This will also keep you on the cutting edge more so then most adult ones even because the focus can be on more of the story that needs to be told. Legends will be hinted also but ghosts and such will also be in it to my delight. The best part is ready this all take place and seeing where she ends up at the end of it all.

Mystery, romance, and betrayal are depicted wonderfully in WAKE THE HOLLOW. The author, Gaby Triana, demonstrates expert story-weaving skills. Readers will keep turning the pages as the main character, Micaela, uncovers each layer of mystery related to her late mother and the hidden secret of Sleepy Hollow. I highly recommend this book!

Mini review time!

I really liked this book, and if not for a few annoying moments (mostly stemming from the fact that Micaela would be talking to either of her confidants — who would each tell her to not trust the other — and she'd basically be like, 'okay, so I shouldn't, like, trust him? Only you?' It seemed to just go back and forth and she only ended up a nervous wreck with no idea what she should do), I probably would have rated this a five.

I loved the whole idea of merging the story of Sleepy Hollow with the life of the actual writer, Washington Irving to make for a creepy, somewhat ghostly, story. It wasn't really scary, but that could be because I don't scare easily, though I still liked the way the creepy scenes played out.

Anyway, back to the whole Sleepy Hollow/Irving aspect.
In this book, Irving plays a huge part in the history of Sleepy Hollow, having used it as the setting of one of his most famous works, and having his own personal history with the town itself, so it only makes sense Irving would have some secrets that would end up playing a huge part in the MC's life, and the craziness of the town, right? Yeah, so there's the usual things that comes with being in a small town. Everyone knows everyone, and everyone knows who the outcasts are. In this case, that would be Micaela, because she's the daughter of the 'town crazy'. I liked how well her role played out, because things made sense! They actually seemed plausible! I can't really complain about a YA book that is actually pretty well written, can I?

All in all, I really enjoyed this book, and will be glad to recommend it!

Wake the Hollow  is a modern take on the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. We begin with Micaela dealing with the loss of her mother along with being haunted. Not knowing who to trust she returns to the place she left earlier with her dad so that she could live normally.

As she delves into the search for a lost manuscript she finds that along with the mystery she not only finds an old friend that could be a possible love interest, but also a newcomer to town. I won’t spoil this part of the mystery.

I found that the author did a lot of research in putting this story together. And yes the town of Sleepy Hollow does exist. Ms. Triana did a good job finding all the small things out about Sleepy Hollow and Washington Irving which added authenticity to the story.

The dialogue was written so well that it felt realistic. The depth to Mica, Bram and Dane also added to the feeling that this could have actually happened. There were a lot of secrets to reveal, ghosts, the feeling of being chased (by someone that felt familiar yet odd and creepy at the same time). This story gives a thrilling adventure that was hard to put down. There was a point where I could feel Mica’s unrest as she struggled with what was real and what wasn’t as if she were having a breakdown. It seemed a little twisted at times.

At times it was slow, mostly in the beginning, but it soon picked up the pace and I found it to be a really good story.   So settle in with your favorite beverage for the telling of an old classic.
