J. R. R. Tolkien -- A Beginner's Guide is a very readable introduction to his work and illustrates why he is the most popular of twentieth-century writers. Examining the novels and other writings, Andrew Blake shows how Tolkien's mastery of language, his establishing of a fully-fledged alternative mythology, and his brave way of looking at difficult questions, have helped to inaugurate a new way of writing which re-established 'fantasy' as a late twentieth-century genre. Tolkien can help us all to understand the contemporary world.

Andrew Blake is the author of 2 books, Sick World Part I: Awakening and Sick World Part II: Redemption.

Both books are available in English and Greek language

Andrew Blake dwells where the light flickers and shadows take on a life of their own. To him, the human mind is nothing but a labyrinth without exit, riddled with dark corners and uncharted instincts. His prose is born at the threshold of reason—where motives blur like mist and actions slip through the net of explanation; where morality bends, and violence becomes a distorted language of communication.

With an almost surgical curiosity for the pathology of crime, Blake does not merely describe evil; he forces the reader to look it in the eye, until their gaze is irrevocably transfixed. His characters—predators and prey alike—navigate a world where logic is a luxury and horror is an inescapable presence.

Choosing the safety of anonymity, he willfully retreats from the spotlight, ceding the stage exclusively to his tormentors and their victims. He firmly believes that the most harrowing truths are always whispered in the dark—and that nothing is more terrifying than that which you cannot see, yet feel persistently watching you.

This book is short on the number of pages (83) but long on content. Blake provides a substantive and useful survey to Tolkien and his writings. In eight chapters he introduces Tolkien through his life, work, legacy, and the major themes of his writings.

Popular opinion insists that Tolkien’s Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books are the best of the century. However, Tolkien has his critics. Blake ably describes the essence of the critic’s disagreements.

All aspects of the book were useful. However, I particularly appreciated how Blake contrasted the recent Peter Jackson movies with the books and explain why Tolkien is considered by many to be an “environmental” writer.

The volume concludes with a Chronology of Tolkien’s major works, glossary, suggestions for further readings, and an index.

After reading this book I want to re-read the Lord of the Rings and find Tolkien’s lesser well-known works.
