There’s a lot going on...beneath the lies.

***3.5 Stars***

I started Beneath The Lies after a quick skim of the blurb as I enjoy them more knowing only the basics. In this case I was sucked into the storyline from the get go. The prologue introduces us to a dysfunctional family, and another family who seem almost perfect. From the start we can see that Leeta, the mother in the dysfunctional family, is a psycho chicken and has two boys who don’t even know what motherly love looks like. Their first experience of motherly love is seeing Mandy, the mother in the perfect family, with her daughter, the emerald eyed Kate. Gavin, who is eight, sees Kate who is four, and is completely drawn to her.

Years later and things have changed a lot for Kate and Gavin. After that first introduction, they don’t lay eyes on each other again for sixteen years. Kate’s mother Mandy, had died of cancer four years earlier and her father has just passed from a stroke. At the funeral, Kate is approached by Leeta who she doesn’t remember. Leeta is concerned that Kate is all by herself and offers for Kate to move to California to live with her. Feeling sad and alone, she accepts the offer. Most of the time Kate is content living with Leeta, but things start to feel a little weird. One night out with some of her new friends, she sees a man who won’t stop staring at her. She’s a little uncomfortable, but doesn’t think much of it until she sees him again and finds out that he is Leeta’s son, Gavin.

Gavin never forgot his green eyed girl, and when he sees Kate again, is determined to have her. Gavin is a little intense and I can’t say I was the hugest fan of his. He’s a little like The Hulk in that he is a big man who looses his temper and starts shouting. I understand he’s had a tough life with a psycho Mum, then a psycho girlfriend, but I’m never really comfortable with the whole…You are mine, on the first date (or there about). He’s also great at keeping secrets from Kate, but loses it when she doesn’t tell him everything.

I really enjoyed the first part and getting introduced to the main characters. Things got REALLY rocky at about the 30% mark when their age and immaturity pushed through. Kate was inexperienced and put up with a lot from Gavin and from someone who was supposed to be a friend. From there until the 50% mark my eyes were on a constant roll. After the halfway point things got back on track. Yes, they still did things that drove me bat spit crazy, but the storyline sucked me back in and I was invested in trying to work out the mystery and how Kate and Gavin would solve their problems.

By the end of Beneath The Lies I was contemplating giving it 4 stars. Then I started thinking about the hero, how he yelled at Kate and sometimes in front of others, and I had to drop it back to 3 and a ½ stars. I enjoyed this story and can definitely see myself reading this authors future work…if the hero’s was a wee bit more mature…and I didn’t want to smack him.

I received a complimentary copy of Beneath The Lies from the author for an honest review.

The release date is set for January 10, 2016.

Beneath the Lies is a Contemporary Romance with a large dash of suspense coursing through the heart of the story. It’s about truth, lies, love and destiny and I found the coming of age theme very much prevalent, with regard to the heroine, as she made discoveries about herself, her past and her future.

Kate Reynolds and Gavin Loman take centre stage and as the story unfolds we learn about how they were once connected, their pasts and the way their lives have been shaped as a result. Kate’s all alone in the world, in terms of family, and Gavin feels much the same, despite his circumstances, all of which becomes clear as the story arc is revealed.

The supporting cast members are all productive in their involvement doing a convincing job of engaging the reader in their side stories and aiding the development of the plot and suspense of the story.

Probably my main critique of the piece is that, at times, the story is over worded for my personal tastes but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of Gavin and Kate’s story as they led me through the web of secrets and lies and navigate their way to their ultimate destiny in life.

I love when Kate’s feisty qualities shine through her timid nature in the prose as she asserts her opinions and personality. Gavin felt powerful and strong, a man in control of his life, despite his tumultuous past, and a man capable of protecting those he cares about. I enjoyed the push and pull pertaining to the build up of their romance. When their sexual attraction for each other takes hold the story excels becoming sexy, romantic and passionate whilst maintaining the intriguing nature of the story.

I've had the pleasure of reading Beneath the Lies twice and have so loved seeing the development of this Contemporary Romance. It's a lovely light read with a SEXY hero, a feisty heroine and an intriguing story arc that evolves at a steady and engaging pace.

When Gavin Loman was eight years old he was forever marked by a little girl with emerald green eyes. As he grew up, he never forgot about her, but it seemed like it might have all been a dream. He never expected that years later he would see her again. Kate Reynolds is going through a tragic event and as a result is alone at twenty years old with no one to turn too. Things change when a family friend from the past named Leeta Loman shows up opening the doors of her home to her and offering her a place to stay. Kate has no choice but to accept since she will not be able to receive her inheritance just yet. This is where Kate meets Gavin Loman, Leeta's son, the same man that intensely stared at her when she went to a fight club with her friends. Gavin warns Kate about his mother's evil ways, but Leeta has been nothing but kind. As time goes by, Kate realizes Leeta may not be as she seems, and that there is no way she can stay away from Gavin as their attraction grows stronger.

This was quite the story. The start of this book was really interesting to me. The tension between them was really intense and Gavin was über alpha which me likey a lot. I wasn't too fond of the insta love thing kind of going on and that's just personal preference. It's just never really been my thing and in rare instances it does manage to work for me, but most cases it doesn't. The reason I don't care for it is because I can't seem to connect with characters as couple when it happens too fast. I did connect with them somewhat but not fully. Gavin was really great at first for me, but his mood swings and temper prevented me from loving him because he came off as immature at times. The keeping things from Kate was a no for me. Kate was sweet and very sheltered so she could be somewhat naïve, but that was because of a reason. You are going to have to read the book to find out why. I liked that Kate could hold her own. Especially when Gavin and Kate were constantly arguing about something. There would be a lot of miscommunication which made things really frustrating for me. When these two were in the bedroom, however, things heated up between them in a good way. The steam was really good and this was probably the only time I actually liked Gavin because he was so damn sexy in them.

There are quite a lot of things that happen in this book. Some was good and very interesting, some was a little too unbelievable. The last third of the book picked up a lot for me. Things finally started making sense after all the suspense and secrets that were kept hidden. It was all very interesting watching it all unfold. Leeta and Gavin's crazy ex-girlfriend Carly were absolutely horrible. Hated the both of them, they were absolutely cray-cray in the methods they took to get what they wanted. Callie, this little girl was so sweet and awesome. I wish there were more scenes of her with Gavin and Kate all together. Overall, it was a good solid story. I may have not loved the main characters completely as a couple, but the suspense of the story line itself was what kept me captivated. I'm very curious to see where the story will go next because I have a feeling things will become a whole lot more dangerous.

★★★ 3.5 - 4 Stars ★★★

Gavin Loman has always known that Kate Reynolds is the girl for him, but it is not until tragedy strikes her tranquil life that she is back in his life again. An heiress to a successful company, but with no family to speak of, she decides to move to a new city to finish college and become a woman who her parents would have been proud to call their daughter.

Gavin has two difficult women in his life, a crazy ex girlfriend and a dysfunctional mother. But he is also a man who has a big heart and a sweet side, although pretty intense and very alpha male.

"Tonight felt wild. I didn't think I was cut out for bad boys, but I think I might be cut out for Gavin Loman."

When overseeing things one night at his underground fighting club, Gavin spots the emerald green eyes he was drawn to as a child, and he is determined that nothing will get in his way and sets out to protect this beauty from both his mother and the woman who wants to keep him from happiness.

The beginning of this story completely captured my attention, and I loved the growly alpha male vibe that Gavin was giving off, he was definitely an intriguing character who I wanted to know more about and find out if he was equally as domineering in the bedroom. Pleased to say that there were no complaints in that department, Riann C Miller certainly knows how to pull of a steamy scene or two and will have you hot and bothered in no time.

There was a lot of miscommunication and tantrums between the two, which was very frustrating at times and I have to be honest and say that this was a major peeve for me. However, the storyline itself made up for this and the mystery element kept me turning the pages.

I am very interested to see where this series may be heading, there were a few side characters that I'd love to hear more about.

All in all, Beneath the Lies was a good solid read.

This is a standalone contemporary romance, told in the heroine's POV with snippets from Gavin.

TITLE: Beneath the Lies
AUTHOR: Riann C. Miller
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
RELEASE DATE: January 10th 2016

MY RATING: 4 STARS

I've not read anything by this author before so was pleasantly surprised how easily I fell under her story telling web, the characters are well developed, the story flows easily and you just get hooked into all the deceit that has your mind reeling..

BENEATH THE LIES: Four years ago adopted twenty year old Kate Reynolds loses her mother to cervical cancer. Then another unexpected death hits her many years later when her father dies of a stroke.
With no other living relatives she has no choice but to go and stay with a close friend of the family in Maine, Leeta.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Leeta hasn't been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, but now..she is.

Your life has always been directed toward me. Even before you knew I existed.
~ Gavin

On a night out with friends and at an illegal underground fighting ring her eyes are drawn to one man in particular time and time again, the next day she bumps into that same man where she's living, it transpires that he is Leeta's son Gavin Loman, this is where things start to develop and become more interesting and even more confusing if that is possible..Gavin warns Kate on numerous occasions to not trust his mother.

She's working an angle. Give me time and I'll figure out what she's up to. In the meantime, don't trust anything she says or does. And if you can, try and avoid her whenever possible.
~ Gavin

Things between Kate and Gavin move at an alarming pace, things he said had me questioning him.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Not all is what it seems.

I was drawn into the story line as soon as I started it,it's one of those books where the further you get into it more pieces of the puzzle are revealed..Beneath The Lies definitely keeps you on your toes as you speed through the pages trying to unravel the mystery of the past, who to trust and who not to trust, and trying to figure out what everyone's agenda is..I never expected this book to have so many mouth fall open with the twists and turns it took me on..

I've thought of nothing but you for longer than you'd believe was possible.

A perfect dark, truthful and heartbreaking story.

It broke my heart but I was also able to smile at the end despite the tears. BENEATH THE LIES is a very intense and addictive love story that has so many beautifully dark elements flowing throughout it.

DARKNESS.

ADORATION.

LOVE.

HEARTBREAK.

SADNESS.

NEGLECT.

LIES.

DECEIT.

ALONE.

SOULFUL.

I adored the feisty personality that Kate portrayed throughout the entire story. At times I didn't know what she would choose or how she could ever be sane again, but her personality shown through. I was delighted by the way her choices made her an even stronger female heroine.

Gavin Loman is one of those sexy male leads that just makes you want more and more of him. Aside from his charming self and good looks, not to mention intelligent in his own right, he also exuded so much control in many different forms. In a way you could say that they way his past turned out, it led to him to become the man that he is. In control of his own life, knows what he needs and how to get it. But in the same way, losing his father at a very young age and having a mother that can never truly become a person he could rely on or learn from, all that? It can trigger a very dark part in someones mind..

Maybe some secrets are better left untold, whilst others must be set free.

In Gavin and Katy's case? Some secrets are just too deep in their own right and have too much darkness flowing through them to become some sort of good for anybody..

The developing relationship between those two was in a weird way both calm and intense at the same time. Their characteristics meshed so well together but they were different in many different ways. I loved how Katy was staying true to her own self in what she knew but when it came down to it, she let some of those walls go.. Gavin thought he had won over control, and maybe at one point he thought that was enough but when it came to Katy he just knew that some things, are bound to change.

Saying that, it wasn't an easy relationship between them. No. They had their fair share of dissagreements and who wouldn't agree that such strong personalities would at any instance turn towards a dead end.. or in other words, come to a point of choosing what you know OR choosing what is best.

And lets not forget the steamy chemistry between them. I mean, it was one of those things that had me blushing and grinning like an idiot. LOVED IT.

BENEATH THE LIES is an addictive read that truly knows how to balance dark and intense with steamy, soulful and heartbreaking.

Thank you so much to Riann C. Miller for the ARC of a gorgeous story!! It's a masterpiece of two characters finding each others soul in one another, and a story line that takes guessing the next move to a new level :)

DNF 38% - NO RATING

I feel so bad to DNF this book because for once it's an author I knew who asked me to review her books. I was thrilled because I understand how hard it could be for new authors to write a book and then giving it to someone who's going to 'judge' it. I also warned her that I became a moody reader lately. Still I wasn't expecting to dnf it.

My major problem was Kate. I couldn't connect with her, I couldn't understand her or her actions. She seems practical but she does act rashly. I didn't understand her reasons to live with Leeta ( Gavin's mom) in the first place and then leaving her out of the blue.
I find her cold. She tells her story but I couldn't picture her in it.
Her connection with Gavin was odd to me. I can accept some insta-connection in a story but it has to be genuine. I didn't feel it here. She seems all over him right away but he's nothing but mean to her.

There's one detail that disrupt me and really it's not big of a deal but I was wondering how a beta reader didn't see it. I think it's in the first 15 % Kate says when Gavin smiles it makes her body reacts... but he never smiled at her at this point.

What really bugged me and I decided to end it there was when the drama came in. If there's one thing that I especially don't like in stories is crazy drama that makes no sense. When it happened here, I couldn't stop my eyes from rolling! It was too much.

To me the story was already interesting and could have been complex enough with all the mysteries surrounding Kate and Gavin's family, adding Gavin's personal drama wasn't necessary.

I hope Riann, you're not mad at me and if you continue writing, I hope you'll still consider to ask me to review your next book.
Till next time ;)

And…

H: “I’ve waited a long time to find you and now that I know what it’s like to have you in my life, I’ll do everything humanly possible to keep you. Forever.”

Worst Line: “I didn’t think I was cut out for bad boys, but I think I might be cut out for Gavin Loman.”

Personal Review:
This was an ok romance between a sheltered woman and an angry guy.

Random Ramblings
•Aww, their first introduction was sweet!
•Party scenes in romances always make me feel on edge especially when its teen/early 20s parties
•Why did she decide to move in with Leeta and not get her own place as she had money and she felt uncomfortable around Leeta?
•The h wasn’t as strong-willed as I would have liked
•For someone who claims to hate games and liars, her sure did mess her about
•He is so sweet with Callie
•The h was more gullible than I realised, especially around Alyssa

Overall Feeling:

Ok

I received an ARC for an honest review of Beneath the Lies by Riann C. Miller

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book! With that said…who ends a book like that? I mean SERIOUSLY? How am I supposed to carry on until the next book is released? This book is exciting, it kept me on edge and I became very unsure of the characters and which character’s were evil. Through the entire book I was curious and thoroughly entertained. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

Clear your calendar when you crack open this book, at least for me that's how it was. Once I opened it up, I ceased to exist in the outside world until I read the very last words.

Kate Reynolds is someone you love from the moment she starts talking, you want to wrap her up in a protective little bubble because the world has hurt her more than enough already and you just know from the first moment you meet Leeta, even her name makes my skin crawl and sounds like some evil villian, that's exactly what she is. Kate has suffered the loss of her parents and in doing so she came into a fortune, a fortune she truly doesn't want and would trade in a heartbeat to have her parents back. She's sucked into a world of lies and deceit, would can she trust if anyone?

Gavin melts your heart from the first time you're introduced to him as a small child and then your heart throbs for him when he re-enters Kate's life as an adult but she trust him? Can you trust your heart to be true?

I found this story to be intriguing, stimulating, exiting, bittersweet, sad and heartwarming all at the same time. It took me on a roller coaster of emotions. I loved how I was able to connect with the characters, when they hurt I hurt and when they loved, I 'felt' it.

Another great book from Riann Miller.

4 Emerald Starry Eyes!!

I really enjoyed this novel.

The plot was very interesting and i was totally intrigued to the very end in finding all the answers.

I love a strong female character, but Kate sometimes (for me) lacked a little with her personality . We get a glimpse and want more from her but then it just filters away.

I felt the same for Gavin too, on one side he starts to show his alpha male, bossy sexy personality, but again just fizzles out . For me a little bit of chase and banter, growling and chemistry would have made me absolutely love these two characters.

As mentioned, i loved the plot immensely, with it's little twists, turns and suspense (Can't give specifics as would give away spoilers)! Again which is down to personal taste it would have been absolutely mind blowing if we had just a little shock factor or a little bit of aghast. For me the storyline felt safe, but never the less it was still a really pleasant and enjoyable read.

This is my first book by Riann Miller, and I love this author already. I am sure with each book she produces her plots and characters are just going to get better and better, hitting the top ten spots!

Totally looking forward to starting book 2 in this series, Locked Away.

I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my! Right form the beginning you will be pulled into this crazy world of lies and deceit. You will have a hard time figuring out who is good and who is bad. I was so intrigued with this book I had a hard time putting it down. Both of the main characters are great and so is the story line. This one will definitley keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what will happen next. I can not wait for the next book.

So much beneath the lies!

Beneath the Lies was an intense, attention grabbing book that kept me hooked from beginning to end and then on with the ending. I love when read a book that it takes time to figure out what is going on. Riann's storylines just that. I thought in knee, but it was only the tip of the iceberg. I love how she developed her characters and how the story progressed and shaped the characters. I highly recommend this to anyone. I can't wait to see what Riann has in store next!

I have read most of Riann's books and have never been diappointed so I'm glad she stayed true with this one. It is a story of loss, betrayal, finding that special someone and fighting to keep it, even if it means going against the family. Protecting everything and everyone you love may cost everything or it may be what gives you meaning for the next breath you take.

Kept me hooked

This is one of those story's that is really hard to review because a lot of stuff could spoil the experience for other readers. I was drawn into this story from the description. While it was vague, it had to be that way because Kate's life may had been pretty easy but that all changed quickly. Gavin has his own set of issues when it comes to life, his wasn't all black and white but I really loved his character.

The plot is the tricky thing. I was blowed away with all the twists that I never saw coming. I want to say that I knew what was going to happen, and a few times I was right, but only with the little things. This book was full of intrigue and mystery and I was hooked.

This book was full of miscommunication and as the title states, lies, but the characters worked hard to get past the issues at hand. I did notice at times they seemed to act a little immature but it didn't bug me as much as I thought it would.

Overall, this was a good book. I loved the mystery aspect and wondering what was going to happen next, and it was a book full of suspense. I will be reading more from this author in the future. The ending of this book left me crazy wanting to know what's going to happen with these characters. 4 stars #2OCCJD

3.5 “you’re mine” stars.

Kate and Gavin met when she was a toddler and he was 8 years old. And with one smile Kate won Gavin’s heart forever.

“Tonight, being with me, makes you mine. I don’t share. Ever. No one and I mean no one gets to see or touch parts of you that are meant for only my eyes. I won’t even apologize for acting possessive. I don’t know why, but I do know we were put on this earth to find each other and now that we have I’ll do everything in my power to protect you.”

Life would keep them apart for almost two decades, but one chance encounter will bring them back together. And although Kate doesn’t remember the hot, bossy bad boy who’s set on claiming her… she won’t put up much of a fight, and I can't really say I blame her, Gavin is hot ;)

Kate has always known she was adopted, but now her father is gone too, circumstances will force her to dig into her past.

Gavin hasn’t had a lot of luck on the family department either, that weekend he met Kate was the same one he lost his father and was left with a psycho for a mother forcing him to grow up in a very toxic environment.

But before he can get Kate to agree to be with him he has quite a few unfinished issues to deal with. What I loved about him was that the second he recognizes Kate he gets his butt in gear to sort his shit out for good.

Let me be clear here, there’s quite a lot of relationship angst: deceiving, conniving parents? Check. Crazy, toxic ex-girlfriend? Check. Misunderstandings between H and h? Check, check aaaaaaand check.

While I really liked Gavin, his inability to be open about his circumstances with Kate from the start caused a lot of problems which could have been bypassed; but I totally understood his fascination with her. On the other hand, I never fully got what it was that captured Kate so much about Gavin. Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally into insta-whatever-you-want-to but I just didn’t completely feet it from Kate’s standing.

This being a NA romance, I expected some immature responses but Kate got on my nerves when she would storm out in a tizzy without giving Gavin the chance to explain (when she had been warned beforehand of what could happen), but then again, Gavin did have some very dumb moves too.

What really threw me for a loop was Kate’s reaction to her parentage, it seemed a bit unbalanced… as I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone let me put this here

So, lots of angst, a bit of suspense and mystery, some really steamy scenes and sweet lovely romance. All in all, Beneath The Lies was a good read.

This is my first book by Riann and I can honestly say that I'm glad that I chose to read and review this. The book kept me sucked in trying to figure out who is behind everything and what is going to happen next. Kate and Gavin always seems to be nailed with something and with it being so early on in their relationship it makes things difficult. Lets face it, being in a relationship is tough as hell and with them being only 20 and 24, and also not having a lot of experience with being in a relationship, its not hard to understand why they don't always act mature. This book has a lot more than what I can or want to say in this review. You really don't want to miss out on this read.

Kate has lost the only living family she had left and decides to move in with Leeta, whom she met at her dad's funeral. Leeta said that she was a close friend of her parents and mentioned that her dad would've loved if she graduated from Berkley and that she could live with her while she goes to school. With having no family she decides to do just that, knowing that her dad would in fact love for her to go there. One night while out with friends they head to an illegal fight club she sees a sexy as sin man but before she knows it the fight is over and they have to leave. She thinks she'll never see him again, but all of a sudden he is at Leeta's house and she finds out that its her son. Needless to say that start going out but it starts out rocky and he has some secrets that will make this relationship hard. Add in the fact that she is receiving scary notes and she learns that her adoption may not be what she thinks and you have one hell of a rollercoaster about to ensue. Will Gavin tell her his secrets? Will she stick around or will it all be too much? Will she let others get in her way of a happy ever after? Will she find out the truth about her adoption?

Gavin first meets Kate when he is 8, he was instantly drawn to the 4 year old with the emerald eyes. She was only 4 but she was quick to hop up next to him and calm him. He was never treated nicely by his mom and is not sure how to take Maggie, Kate's mother and how nice and loving she was. Fast forward 16 years and he's at his illegal fight club and he sees her again. The connection is as strong as ever and he has to make her his but the problem is that she is living with his evil mother and his crazy ex that will do anything to keep him from being happy with anyone else. Will Gavin be able to figure out his mother's intentions in time? Will he be able to get his ex out of his life and not lose the most important things in his life?

4 stars – an intriguing story full of many twists and turns

Gavin Loman met the girl with the green eyes when he was 8 and she was just 4 years old. This little girl left a lasting impression on him and when he sees those eyes across the room at one of his illegal fights he believes even more that they are destined to be together and he has to have her. Growing up in a very dysfunctional family, where he and his brother were never shown any love, he now has two crazy women in his life – his mother Leeta who spends her life scheming and who I had an uneasy feeling about from the start and his ex-girlfriend Carly. He is however determined that nothing will get in the way of him having a relationship with Kate

Kate Reynolds, adopted by her parents as a baby has lived a sheltered life. Having lost her mother 4 years previously and her father more recently, she is now the heiress to his company and following his funeral makes the decision to attend Berkley and graduate as she knows this is what he would have wanted. Leeta was the wife of her fathers former business partner. She turns up at the funeral, offering Kate a place to stay but I have to say there was something about this woman that seemed too good to be true right from the start which Kate also comes to realise. Getting her own place seemed the best solution but when mysterious letters start being left at her apartment alluding to her past and her adoption, Kate becomes uneasy and starts to question whether her upbringing was as perfect as she believes it to be.

Gavin pursues Kate, determined to make her his. He shows all the typical bad ass alpha male qualities although for me he came over a little too intense and lost his temper at the slightest thing but we did however get plenty of steamy scenes which did not disappoint in any way. Kate was a little gullible and put up with a bit too much from Gavin and I wanted to bang their heads together on more than one occasion but what comes through is his love for her and his need to protect her no matter what.

This story had me drawn in from the start. There was plenty of intrigue which left me invested in the characters and determined to put all the pieces of the puzzle together and solve the mystery. This is the first book I have read of Riann’s and I enjoyed the pace in which it moves and the way it kept me waiting and waiting till the end for all the pieces to fall into place. There is a cliff hanger at the end so be warned but I will be waiting not so patiently for the next instalment in this story.

Kate and Gavin meet for the first time when they are very young and it wouldn’t be until years later that they meet again. When Kate is alone after her parents have passed she takes up the offering of an old family friend she hasn’t seen in years. But all is not as it seems….Why is Gavin telling Kate to stay away from his mother Leeta? And why has Leeta suddenly come back into Kate’s life? Beneath the lies, the truth remains hidden; but not for very long!

“As ridiculous as we might look lying naked on the top of his bed, I know this is the moment I was truly found. The funny thing is, until Gavin came into my life…I didn’t know how lost I truly was.”

A truly captivating read with so many twists, turns and unexpected characters that I found it hard to keep up. This is a book you really have to dedicate yourself to but you won’t regret it once you do. Lies, betrayal, love, hate, secrets, truth; all combine to make one hell of a read.

“You belong to me, Kate. And I belong to you.” Gavin’s tone is still harsh, almost punishing, but right now all I care about is how he’s making me feel. “You’re never to run away from me again.”

Both Kate and Gavin are such intriguing characters. Kate is a strong young woman, who even though has suffered great loss, manages to remain bright, kind, cheerful and loving. She is smart and is someone who believes in doing the right thing. Gavin may seem more complex at the start and he definitely has his moments, like his slight over protectiveness or the fact he can get quite moody. But deep down he is just a young guy who loves those he’s close to with a deep devotion and wants to protect them!

“When I finally gain the courage to look up, I find those emerald eyes burning into mine, but it’s the way Kate is smiling at me that I know I’ll never forget. Like maybe…just maybe, I matter to someone.”

The plot is really exciting and really full of so many surprises; so many that I can’t say much without giving anything away. I will say though that we meet some very interesting characters, some who have good intentions and some who don’t. And lies there are a plenty in this story; not everyone is there for the right reasons, some are dangerous, some may go to the extremes to get what they want from Gavin and Katy.

Beneath the Lies by Riann C. Miller

Beneath the lies is the Story of Gavin and Kate. It’s a contemporary romance/new adult with a lot of twists and turns! Kate is a Student dealing with the loss of her parents, she starts college life by staying with a family friend who’s son Gavin, seems to know more about Kate than she realises. The two begin a whirlwind romance, but as far as instalove goes it’s at a believable pace for flow of the story. Kate’s life however is about to get whole lot more complicated with the arrival of mysterious letters and newspaper articles as well as some out of the blue emails which are about to reveal a much darker secret about her past!

As far as the story goes, i found it a little slow to get going, there was a lot going on with the sub characters and the student party life which could have been pared down a little as it did become a distraction from everything that was going on between Gavin and Kate, and there is a lot going on with them. Gavin at the start is portrayed more as an Alpha which i didnt feel really matched his character as the story progressed, the way he spoke to kate at “those” moments seemed almost out of nowhere and kind of made me dislike him a little if i’m honest. Kate’s Character is instantly likeable though and whilst her past has left her vulnerable she still has a strength to her which she is going to need for the next installment! I love the fact that the story was wrapped up as far as this book goes but we were left with a cliffhanger which leaves me intrigued to know more about some of the characters who appear later in the story. I have given this 4 stars mainly due to the fact that i felt Gavin could have been a little less alpha and i felt that the more steamy scenes were a little hastily written. A great read though and a real page turner towards the end!

There has always been something about Kate’s beautiful emerald eyes. They mesmerized Gavin from the first time he saw her when they were just children. Now they both are grown. Kate has just suffered a tragic event and is putting her life back together. Fate, or more likely Gavin’s conniving mother ends up bringing them back together. Will they be able to work through all the lies and find a way to be together, or will the truth be what destroys them for good?
I absolutely fell in love with Kate and Gavin from the first chapter. The attraction between these two was evident from the start. Despite coming from different upbringings, they both had to figure a way to be strong and fight for what they want. I became frustrated with them at one point. I think I may have actually yelled at Kate to just talk to him! But this shows just how connected I was and how badly I wanted them to work out.
There were characters in this book I loved, like Kate, Gavin and Callie, and their close network of friends. Then there were ones I loved to hate like the conniving Leeta and Carly. I think I was most surprised by Damien!
The storyline in this book was full of twists and turns. Just when I thought I figured out the lies and who was behind them, BAM! Plot twist! It kept me turning pages and staying up way too late reading. I do not regret a single sleepless night I spent with this book. Let me tell you, the ending… Awesome! I totally did not see that one coming. It set the next book up perfectly!
This was my first read by Riann C. Miller, and I can tell you it will not be my last. Her writing style is fantastic. There is just enough action, suspense and heat to keep you wanting more! I can’t wait for the next book to come out!
I give Beneath the Lies a 5-star rating.
