The past keeps ambushing Phoebe McCabe as she begins her new life as a London gallery owner. Every crook believes she knows where her missing brother hid the hoard; Interpol thinks the thieves may have stashed the priceless artifacts under her nose; and she's being stalked by multiple interests, none of them friendly. All she wants is a normal life. If only normal didn't feel so...uneventful.
Against the panorama of Central Turkey's underground cities and ancient caves, Phoebe chases clues deep into the prehistoric past. She desperately needs to find her brother, yet everything conspires to drag her deeper into the black market antiquities trade. Who is friend and who is foe? Is the man she cares for a crook or a new breed of hero? And how does an antique textile connect to how men worshiped women thousands of years ago?
What Phoebe discovers along the way is more than just about ancient shrines, missing relatives, and love betrayed. She finds that what's at the heart of the human weave may be the pattern that illuminates everything that matters.
This fast-moving suspense blends intrigue, humor, and romance with archaeology, ideology, and one woman's quest for the ultimate truth.
I've had this book on my TBR pile for a while and finally had the chance to pick it up and read it. I admit I didn't read the first book in the series (though I'm going back for books 1 and 3 now), but I found that this works well as a standalone story. Phoebe McCabe is part-owner of an antique store in London that specializes in carpets among other objects. Phoebe is also on Interpol's radar due to her brother, Toby, and her partner's son, Noel, stealing a treasure (in the first book). She's determined to bring them to justice because of their treachery. However, Phoebe is drawn back into intrigues as her shop is broken into and she discovers a secret left by her brother. This sets her off on an adventure to Istanbul and a reunion of sorts. The story is well-written and Phoebe is an interesting character, a bit impetuous but loveable all the same. Besides her interest in fiber arts (I learned a lot about carpets), Phoebe is a knitter and uses the craft to calm herself when things get too crazy. As I said above, I'm going back for the other books in this intriguing mystery series.
I received a free copy of this book from a Prolific Works giveaway and this is my honest opinion. This is book two in the Crime by Design series and while it was a very good read, at times there was so much going on I almost wanted to take a break to get "all my ducks in a row". There is plenty of adventure, betrayal, suspense, murder and also, an abundance of knitting and antique threadwork in this story. The knitting and threadwork were a nice addition for me as I have been a crocheter for many years. I definitely enjoyed this story and look forward to number three in the series. That being said, there is the same downside to this story that I found in Rogue Wave - too many typos. I just don't understand and obviously, I never will. It seems to me that if an author is losing stars in ratings they would immediately address the issue, but such doesn't seem to be the case. I guess it will be that little thorn in my side I have to deal with when it comes to indie authors.
Although the main character, Phoebe, is engaging and I typically really enjoy a good heist tale, I have some real problems with this book. It seems to begin mid story and references incidents between unseen characters in the past. The author just assumes we know the history. It’s like trying to start watching Game of Thrones halfway through season 2. Secondly, antique dealer Phoebe shows another character a necklace purporting to have been made for Queen Isabella of Spain circa 1561. Isabella of Castile died in 1504. This fact could’ve been checked with the simplest internet search. That the author chose not to do that reeks of laziness and calls into question the integrity of the whole narrative. It also feels disrespectful to her readers. She assumes we won’t know or care about it. All in all, this book might have been saved by a good editor who could help the author hone and refine it. Sadly, that didn’t happen.
Phoebe McCabe is a textile expert who sells ancient carpets . She initially trained in law until she decided to go with that passion . She had just moved to London from Nova Scotia to work with her godfather. She was upset with her brother who had double crossed her by engaging in criminal behavior . She finds a rare and very ancient carpet in the storeroom and becomes intrigued . That started a journey to Istanbul and quite an adventure .
Istanbul! Really felt like I was along for the ride as Phoebe is sent a package that leads her to Istanbul, a peculiar professor, and more followers than the city streets in London (well, that might be an exaggeration) as she tries to find the clue that will lead to her brother and the archeologist she might be falling in love with. Fun, exciting, never know what is coming next! Enjoyed it! Where is book three!
Story continues with our main character trying he hand at running a gallery, but trouble always finds her. Reason for 3 stars is because the heroine is less and less likeable, even though the story is pretty good. I'll try book 3, hoping that she doesn't become as ignorant as she seems to be here. Interesting take on the Feminine Divinity. And as always Muslim men ruin everything with their ignorance ND misinterpretation of Koran.
Motivation of characters and personal background of characters is missing. Phoebe, main character, needs motivations fleshed out. She needs more personal motivation than that she dislikes criminal behavior.
This is my second book of Thornleys and I am so pleased. These books push all my buttons, art, textiles, goddesses, action. I can't wait to find more from this series. I have apparently skipped the first book in this series. Oh well.
I enjoyed this book. It's a bit fantastical but I know I am reading fiction. This book is strong on action. I had to stay up late reading to find out what happened.
Not kindle unlimited Crime by Design Rogue Wave 1, Warp in the Weave 2 Beautiful Survivor 3 The Greater of Two Evils 4
received 1 and 2 from freebies, thought would be good read since was talking about knitting or weaving or whatever in cozy setting. Didn't really, wasn't really, and kept zoning out while trying to read. Many issues with the writing in many ways.
I loved the first book in the series. This made be really want this second book. I am glad I got it!. Warp in the Weave has a faster pace. Phoebe is back in this story and we see her develop more as a character. That alone leaves you needing more of Ms. Thornley's books, just so you can continue on Phoebe's journey. Not only does the story have a thriller element, there is humor as well. Book three is much anticipated.
I enjoyed The Warp in the Weave even more than I did the first book in the series. Phoebe has grown as a character, which has made the story that much better. The story was well developed and fairly fast paced, which made it a page-turned. I was sorry to see it end. I hope Jane Thornley continues on with the series because I have gotten attached to the characters.
If you think the first book is good, this one will definitely bring more!
Join Phoebe as she takes on more adventure, more action, more treasures and more clues. These, however, also bring on more allies/enemies. Who can she trust?
I have to admit, this is not usually my genre, and I started reading hesitantly. But the more I read, the more I found myself being drawn into this world Jane weaved. I could see, feel, touch and smell Istanbul as if I were there. It was a thrilling and intriguing adventure that took me by surprise.
This book was an on the edge, non-stop thriller. I loved the direction the story took and enjoyed the intriguing characters introduced to us. I was constantly wondering which direction we'd go. Very fun read!
The second in a trilogy, this book continues the adventures of Pheobe and the lost treasures. I'm looking forward to reading the last book in this trilogy to see how things end for this woman who continually finds herself in a mess!
So enjoyable following the adventures of Phoebe McCabe and that she loves knitting and textiles as I do adds to the pleasure. On to " Beautiful Survivor"!
