Despite a deathbed warning from her beloved mother, Phoebe Mulligan has no choice but to throw herself on the mercy of her uncle, Edward. Wrenched from all she holds dear, the tragic young girl is delivered to Blackburn town, where she must live in a household terrorised by the cold, forbidding presence of her mother's brother. Phoebe cannot understand why she is treated so harshly by Edward Dickens. She is not to know the guilty secret that lies in his past, a secret that casts a sinister shadow over his feelings for his lovely niece . . .
Josephine Cox was born in Blackburn, one of ten children. At the age of sixteen, Josephine met and married her husband Ken, and had two sons. When the boys started school, she decided to go to college and eventually gained a place at university but was unable to take this up as it would have meant living away from home. Instead, she went into teaching – and started to write her first full-length novel. She won the ‘Superwoman of Great Britain’ Award, for which her family had secretly entered her, at the same time as her novel was accepted for publication. She is now a No.1 bestselling author with over 40 books to her name.
She wrote dark psychological thrillers under the name Jane Brindle.
A well-written story which I enjoyed immensely, I always think that Josephine Cox's eallier novels are the best. However, the storylines are so similar to Catherine Cookson's, I find that some parts are usually predictable and repetitive which spoilt it a little for me, hence I didn't give it 5 stars.
A brilliant story kept you waiting for the next chapter be love rescued the girl who had suffered and now she had her man and all the love and happiness she so deserved ❤️
Such a lovely saga, so true to life in any ways. I love Josephine Cox and all her novels and will always follow her. She is one of the best authors I know.
An excellent read from beginning to end the story kept me reading late into the night just couldn't put it down secrets lies and intrigue Highly recommend
Loved it, it gripped me from the beginning. The struggles of a young woman and her findings along the way. Brilliant. Couldn't wait to pick the book up and read more and a happy ending.
One of the first Josephine Cox books I read. Absolutely loved it. I find she has some very good books, some that I find too predictable or too depressing!
I'd recommend 'The devil you know', 'Miss you forever', and 'Love me or leave me' as some of her best novels.
