Planet Earth II

Rate this book
10 years on from the first, groundbreaking, Planet Earth, we use the most incredible advances in technology and scientific discovery to bring you the most exciting and immersive picture of our world's wildlife yet.

With over 250 breathtaking photographs and stills from the BBC Natural History Unit's spectacular footage, this is an extraordinary new look at the complex life of some of the most amazing places on Planet Earth.

Each chapter reveals an environment – some never-before-seen, some astonishingly familiar – defined by a unique set of rules required for survival. From the most desolate desert to the depths of the jungle, from blistering heat and freezing cold to perpetual darkness and deadly UV, discover how a whole host of creatures have adapted to life in the most extreme conditions. And how they compete with one another to become the largest, the fastest, the most poisonous, or most devious - all in a bid to survive.

Planet Earth II includes the first in-depth look at the urban environment, and the surprising range of behaviours occurring right under our noses, as well as some previously untouched island worlds. Filmed with remarkable 5k and infra-red technology, these are the challenges, the confrontations, and the triumphs of some of the most extraordinary creatures in the natural world, told from their perspective.

This is our planet, as you have never seen it before.

I initially thought this was going to be just the script of the show but I was surprised that it had extra stuff that didn't make the final cut.

Verdict: The show is enough on its own.

The books that accompany BBC natural history documentaries are usually good standalone works themselves, and this one proved to be the case, with very eloquent and captivating writing by the author. The photographs are also stunning and of high quality, just like the film series. Even if you have watched them, it does not feel boring reading about the same content, and in fact one gets to enjoy being immersed in the natural landscapes once again, albeit through text and images.

While enjoyable, my critique of recent nature documentaries has always been that they focus too much on spectacle and drama, rather than actually imparting important and arguably more fascinating knowledge on ecology, something the old classics like 'The Living Planet' did very well. Thus no matter how stunning the visuals are of 'never before filmed' animal behavior, I wish they did more to educate the public about how the natural world works.

It's my environmental non-fiction time apparently! I've had this book on my tbr shelves for a few years now (for shame) and finally got to it and enjoyed it just as much as I thought I would!

There is a foreword by David Attenborough which I, of course, adored. But I loved the body of the book as well. The photography that is included in this is stunning, getting to see both gorgeous landscapes and also close ups of various animals across the globe.

It's been a long while now since I watched Planet Earth II, but bells were ringing as I read this which was really enjoyable as I was remembering information given in the TV show whilst learning more from the book. Getting information about the difficulties the videographers had in obtaining their footage really adds to your knowledge about the environment these animals are living in and places you much further into their world.

I'm so glad that I finally read this one, and now I think I need to pick up the book for Planet Earth III!

An excellent companion book to the BBC documentary of the same name. The spectacular photography makes it a lovely way to revisit the animals, their habitats and their stories without having to turn on the TV.
