F.X. Shepherd is juggling a new job as a PI, while keeping up with his strangely popular pet column. He is hired by a congressman who has received death threats, part of the escalating war between the Republican Party and Tea Party extremists. A series of murders of gun rights politicos at a presidential convention ratchets up the stakes, and Shepherd must fight off his liberal parents, do-anything-for-a-story reporter Jeannie Mac, and a gang of mysterious gunmen.
KIERAN CROWLEY is a New York Times bestselling crime author and investigative reporter who has received communication from an actual serial killer and deciphered his secret code. Crowley has covered hundreds of trials and thousands of murders and recovered evidence missed by police at numerous crime scenes, some of which helped bring killers to Justice. He lives in New York with his family.
3.5 stars This was a light-hearted romp of a story that is a fairly breezy read. It was entertaining and the dialogue was fun. However, while it contained many of the positives of this type of book - nonstop action, pithy dialogue, amusing sidekicks, quirky secondary characters, and great dog - it also had some negatives. A little too pat, a few too many cliched themes (and not with an ironic edge) and for those who read lots of this type of book, a lack of originality. Also, there was a lack of depth to the MC which made it hard to connect. While the author tried to portray the MC as a true hero who wanted to do good, it was hard to overlook certain things that made him pretty unsympathetic. So while I enjoyed it, I expect this one will be quickly forgotten as one of many blitzed-through action books.
Got this book in a Goodreads giveaway. Very glad I did! Just wolfed through this novel without putting it down - adventure, idealism, sleaze, cycnicism, and action in one thrilling package. Only slightly less unbeliavable than Trump vs Clinton & frankly loads more entertaining. Up there in my top 5 books this year easily (and I'm heading for 100+, so it's not top 5 of 5 either).
Broke my heart to read the author's bio on the book. He will not be writing another FX Shepherd book unless they find a manuscript somewhere in his belongings. He's left us due to Leukemia. :( It was a good book, I'll miss F.X.
F.X. Shepherd's exploits were still fun to read in this second book, and it saddened me to learn that author Kieran Crowley passed away. Rest in peace, Mr. Crowley.
