Breeds #22

Wake A Sleeping Tiger

Rate this book
Once, he was Judd—Bengal Breed and brother to the notorious fugitive Gideon. After Gideon disappeared, Judd was experimented on until his tortured body knew nothing but agony.

Now, he is Cullen Maverick, serving as the commander of the Covert Law Enforcement Agency in the small community of Window Rock, Arizona. Despite his genetics, Judd is able to pass as human because his Bengal traits are recessed. But he is unable to smell the emotions, bonds and fears that other Breeds take for granted. He remains tormented that he wasn’t able to mate the woman he'd loved—at the cost of her life.

He’s just a man. The genetics of the animal he was created to possess are forever silent, leaving no hint of the Breed he should have been. Or so he thought. His tiger is about to be awakened by the one woman destined to be his—Chelsea Martinez. And their world will never be the same...

This is more of note session for me than a review..

I have many conflicting emotions. I liked that we were finally back to the simplicity of the Mating Heat and didn't focus too much on the spiritual duality and substitution from the previous books. I really liked the Navajo addition and lore when it was first introduced but I didn't like how convoluted it all became with it. I also find it annoying that a ton of minor characters featured in novellas or audio only books keep popping up and adding to the narrative and I have no clue who they are. In my opinion novellas should be like a bonus top up to your book series addiction with side characters getting their HEA without disrupting or adding to the main story. When they keep popping up in the main books it just makes me confused and kinda annoyed.

Initially, I was hesitant to read this. But I loved being back in this world and I enjoyed Graeme/Gideon so much more in this one rather that his own book. The story did drag a bit more than it should but the connection, past and backstory of Cullen and Chelsea was sweet and hot. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

I hope that the series continues after Cassie's book which is next as I really want poor Dane to find a mate. And Ashley!

3.5 Smut Scale Stars Screw It, 4 Smut Scale Stars

I have been a longtime reader of this series (pretty much since the beginning almost 20 years ago) and I just adore it. To be frank, at this point, I'm not really sure the above stars reflect how actually good the book was, or just my personal nostalgic love for this series. So keep that in mind...

That said, I really enjoyed this installment (which I read out of order...again...whoops).

I really loved Cullen (and of course, Graeme). Now...I can't say that I necessarily loved Chelsea. While I did respect her inner drive and her wish to be independent, I also have a low tolerance for stubbornness just for the sake of it. I get annoyed when characters constantly put themselves and others in danger for what sometimes feels like simple self-actualization. But anyway. I am a sucker for Leigh's Breed world and I really enjoyed this.

I need Rhyzan's book. Stat.

I just love it when I open a book and I get exactly what I have been expecting and hoping to get.

Oh, how much I have missed Breeds...

After Bengal's Quest, which was a complete mess, this one has a strong, nice story that reminded me of the good old Breeds' stories.

Cullen is the commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Division in Window Rock, New Mexico and he is a Bengal Breed. Unfortunately he likes things in order and he does not want to be a Breed. His denial results in recessed Breed traits. Consequently he lacks many of the Breeds characteristics (scent sensitivity, intuition and advanced strength etc.) and of course the Mating Heat.

When his brother Graeme appears again in his life some of his Breed’s characteristics start to surface and this trend is intensified when his personal assistant Chelsea gives him her resignation and leaves him.
The Recessed Primal Breed at exactly this point realizes that Chelsea is important to him and a chink appears in his armor. The Mating Heat kicks in.

The book has everything you can always find in a Breeds’ book:
1. Adventure
Enraged howls filled the night as Chelsea slammed the Runner into gear and the desert vehicle shot forward. The deep tread of the tires bit into dirt, sand and gravel, then all but picked up and flew through the night.

2. Funny moments
“Maybe it’s hungry,” she suggested, her voice low but definitely goading now. “Do you keep kitty kibble around?”

3. Betrayal
“I’ll be damned if I’ll even try to work with him knowing how easily he betrayed our friendship and tried to endanger you.”

4. A few tears here and there
“Come here, baby. I’m right here. Come on, let me take you to your momma...”

5. Passion
His arm went around her waist, his head lowered and before she could resist he let his tongue taste her lips, then pushed between the curves and claimed her mouth with a kiss he was craving.

6. Love
“I love you, wild woman”
“I love you, tiger man”

The next book is about CASSIE and I am really looking forward to it. Please, please I want so much Dog as her mate. But I guess I will accept anything, if it is well written.

Also, judging from the number of unmated characters that appear in the book and they have been already introduced to us in the previous books and the number of the new characters; I can only think there are many more books in process.
I could see at least one more book with a surprising new character that she appears towards the end of this book.

Background reading:
Obviously the book is not a standalone. Although the writer provides in the beginning of the book an introduction to “THE WORLD OF THE BREEDS” and in the end of the book a few “BREED TERMS”, you may still not be able to follow the story.
I can give you a few extra suggestions, so that you will not get totally lost.
1. Bengal's Quest, if you want to learn more about Graeme/Gideon (Cullen’s psycho brother) and his mate Cat.
2. An Inconvenient Mate, if you want to learn more about Isabelle (Chelsea’s playful sister) and her mate Malachi.
3. Elizabeth's Wolf, if you want to learn more about Cassie (How can you read Breeds and not know Cassie?)
4. Dawn's Awakening, if you want to know how Cassie and her obsessive mysterious stalker have started flirting.

Great one, with a spectacular cliffhanger!

This book was Cullen’s story. Cullen was formerly known as Judd when he was in the Labs and was Gideon’s identical twin but after escaping with Honor and Fawn and arriving at the Navajo Nation, he became Cullen and soon became the Commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Agency.

Chelsea has worked for him at the Agency for years as well as working for the “Unknown” and has been training to be a field operative since she was a teenager. However, Cullen wants her to stay protected so he refuses to let her do anything other than office work and filing. So she quits to go on secret assignment for Rule Breaker and Cassie.

When Cullen figures out Chelsea is not coming back and is working a dangerous Job where she is nearly killed, his recessed Genetics start coming forward and mating heat starts between the two of them. Cullen was previously married to a distant cousin of Chelsea’s and everyone thinks he has been pining for her since she died 10 years ago. So this causes issues for Chelsea.

The romance has ups and downs but is quite hot and the storyline is very good. Every scene with Graeme (formerly known as Gideon) is awesome. I had been looking forward to his book but was a bit disappointed by it, he seems to be so much more enjoyable as a secondary character, I guess. The book ends in a pretty monumental cliffhanger so I can’t wait to start the next book!

Overall a good addition to the series.
When book 31 of the breeds was finally announced, I was really excited- because it took me one step close to Cassie's book (after I realized it wasn't Cassie's book)!
The characters of this book are Judd and Chelsea.
Judd/Cullen is a recessed bengal breed, twin brother of Graeme/Gideon whom we met in the previous book.
Chelsea is Isabella's sister (Malachi's mate).
The pair has known each other for years. Judd was married to Chelsea's late cousin Lauren, and Chelsea has been working as his secretary in his Covert Law Enforcement agency.
After years of doing desk jobs, when Chelsea realizes he's never going to let her in the field- she resigns- and the threat of separation wakes the recessed primal breed.
The story reminds of earlier books in the series- a couple fighting attraction, strong breeding instincts, mating mark, loads and loads of barbed sex and emotion sensing.
There are also evil murderers and villians to push the buggy.
Graeme's journal entries were one of my favorite parts of the book and added to the chapters.
The main couple was just likable- there was occasional good chemistry between them but since I have read so much better in this series- that was purely average. Sometimes I really wanted to shake them saying "FFS TALK!"
What I did enjoy reading is tidbits about Cassie and her coyote and hints regarding the next book.
The BIG shocker in the end was not what I could have ever predicted- but it makes me even more excited for the next book!!!

31 books and counting.Who knew that when I picked up a copy of Tempting the Beast several years ago that I would still be reading this series. From the first introduction to this highly erotic series when they first appeared in the now defunct Elloras Cave to the more mainstream publishing houses, this series has held my attention, sometimes good, sometimes not so good a few years back when I could bearly finish the books. This one however was not the case. From beginning to end,I was engaged with the story and my oh my,that shocker of a cliffhanger ending! who would ever have guessed it!!!! I am now more that ever anxiously awaiting Cassie's book and the identity of her mate,is it someone we know,or is it someone else totally new,but always lingering in the background.I hope that her book will live up to my expectations as another Breed book ,Jonas's,I was disappointed in.LL did not disappoint with her trademark sex scenes,as usual, they were smoking!
One of the better additions to the series.

Full review...

The book is the standard fight the mating heat fare of the early books with a little bit extra. Nothing like the great storylines from the years when the series first went mainstream; but not nearly as convoluted and confusing as recent books. After all these years you would think there would be something more.

The angst comes from the long ago death of Cullen's wife, and what bit of action there is comes from the criminal blood queen who 'blames' Chelsea for the death of her daughter. Cassie makes a brief appearance; and if not for the mention of a handful of known Breed names and the mating heat bit, you'd never know you were reading a Breeds books.

This could be any sexed up CR, or an angsty, soapy/drama NA. The recessed gene subplot was interesting; but it soon gave way to the routine 'mine' of the mating heat. You definitely know you are reading LL. The sex scenes are the same as they were fifteen years ago - all the spasming, clenching, and juices weeping from books long past is still here intact.

It's time to end this series. The storyline isn't progressing, and Leigh's writing style (especially the sex scenes) is trapped in a time warp. Cullen is definitely nothing like the Breed of the old days. He's much more the in-touch-with-his-feelings NA dude with a recessed Bengal gene than he is the DNA enhanced Breed warrior. LL always said Cassie (Dog !! Dog !! Dog !!) would be the last book...it's time...

This review was originally posted on Addicted To Romance Summary
Cullen Maverick also once known as "Judd" became a recessed Bengal Breed, a very rare circumstance. A recessed breed is rare, but their breed gentetics are also hidden so deep that it takes something deep to bring out the breed instincts of the animal and once it roars to life there is no stopping it. Cullen is the commander of the Covert Law Enforcement for the Navajo's, but there is one talent under him, that he refuses to let in the field and be no more than a personal assistant, a woman who is a fighter and refuses to be put in the shadows. She knows that she can make a difference and when Cullen refuses to give her the chance despite her intense training and recommendations, she leaves not realizing the beast she has awakened in Cullen. But Chelsea's life is put in danger when there is a hit out on her life after attempting to save a little girl from the genetics council. But Chelsea and Cullen are about to step into a hornets nest of the past and present merging together and may not survive the storm.
I never asked you to save me, Cullen. I just wanted to fight beside you
Plot and Story Line
This story really packs a punch and might be one of the best of the series that I have read in a while. Of course I have really enjoyed the majority of the books of this series, however there was something just 'more' to this story than you would think. And man there is so much going on in this book. Of course, we get some fun moments from Cullen's brother and we do get some involvement with Cassie. And I have the strongest feeling we will be seeing her book very very soon. I love Cassie to pieces, but she became so mysterious in this book like we know nothing about her truly. The book sets off with a thrilling and dramatic scene of Chelsea trying to save a little girl's life from being tormented by hyena breeds that work for the council. And unfortunately it doesn't work out like Chelsea tried, and soon her life is in danger. At first, we seem to think it might be this girl's mother wanted revenge for her daughter's death. However, we start to slowly put the pieces of the puzzle together and figure that there is something more going on. Something that involves the past of Cullen and Chelsea. Cullen still bears the emotinal scars of being married but not mating, a woman who was dying and he couldn't save her. And wow the action and intrigue scenes that come into play, what a hot seat this book turns out to be. And Chelsea and Cullen have quite a few things emotionally to work through including the danger that is after them. Plus a bit of a slight cliffhanger to the actual plot that deals directly with Cassie and her secrets. What I truly liked about this book though was seeing that the danger plot line didn't take away from the romance. I felt that it enhanced it a bit, forcing Cullen and Chelse to be honest with each other and let go of the past.
Darlin', I don't just kiss you whenever I'm pissed off with you. If I did, I'd have been kissing you every day for the past four years because I think you live to piss me off
We see how they both realize how important it is to let go of past doubts that played a part in keeping them apart, and fighting to find a way to be together and make their 'mating' work. There is quite a bit of rich emotion included in this story that helps balance out all the physical smexiness you find in Leigh's writing.
Chelsea, I love you. That's why the mating heat flared when I knew you were leaving the Agency and me. That's why, when Graeme told me of your attack, there was no way I couldn't have come to you, and the Heat was stronger when I did. I was going crazy without your laughter, your smart-ass remarks and the warmth that is so much a part of you. I love you. I even loved you when you were a bratty twelve-year-old who winked at me and decided I was crazy for turning down her father's soup. Some part of my instincts demanded I give you a chance to mature, though, as you became older. to grow in who you were, not who I wanted you to be
The Cover
I really like this cover...it just grabs your attention. I mean really all that sexy muscle with some chains and a tiger in the background....pulls you in.
Overall View
Wake A Sleeping Tiger is a thrilling addition to an action packed series that steals your breath away...full of mystery, chills and thrills and an intense yet heart wrenching read that you won't forget.

Chelsea Martinez has been Cullen Maverick's personal assistant for way too long. Filing, completing reports, and office politics is not what she signed up for when she joined the the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Division. It's become increasing apparent the good 'ole boys club will never let her out of the office into the field so Chelsea makes the decision to cut her loses and move on.

Chelsea has become an integral part of Cullen's life which is why her resignation hits him deep. It's been said that a Breed's inner primal can be triggered by deep emotional stress which may explain the reason his inner Bengal has now decided to come out and play ... or so his evil brainiac mad scientist twin brother Graeme (Gideon) is happy to point out.

The situation becomes critical when it's found Chelsea has been targeted and has a contract out on her head. As if that's not enough, the couple begin to experience the onset of mating heat and find themselves unable to keep their hands off each other.

It's going to take the combined forces of family, friends, co-workers, and others to assure the couple survive the shit storm that's about to be unleashed. All while Chelsea questions if Cullen's sudden change of heart is a just a ploy to get her back in the office.

* * * *

This is the 31st installment in the Breeds series featuring Cullen & Chelsea. Fans of the series may remember Cullen as Graeme's twin brother who was featured in Bengal's Quest. To answer the obvious question ... Yup Graeme's as screwed up as he was but Cat's definitely mellowed him to some degree.

My take of this book is that it is VERY complex and filled to the brim with action/adventure, mystery/suspense, violence and romance to the point I went into information overload status that required me to take breaks to absorb what I had read before proceeding on. That isn't so much a complaint as a cautionary alert that there is a lot packed into the story that may get confusing. Pacing may be needed. On the plus side, the author has included a glossary of breed terms at the end of the book that I'd suggest any potential reader look at BEFORE reading the story if for no other reason than to re-familiarize yourself on key world building aspects necessary to understanding elements unique to the series/book.

While the content and story line took up the majority of the book, the romance between the main characters did flow to connect the two and their relationship. Any reservations as to why they hadn't mated prior were well explained and had a ring of truth for me the reader to understand. I totally appreciated the adult content scenes though I can't say I didn't want more. Selfish on my part but it is what it is. I like my smut and not shy in saying that.

The cast of secondary characters is huge. Characters from previous installments and new characters who I'm sure will be featured in the future create for way too many people to keep tract of and/or identify in a meaningful way. The one secondary character (well two if you include his mate Cat) who made the biggest impression was Graeme. Each chapter (and prologue) begins with his ongoing scientific documentation and analysis that suggests that his brother is just another of his ongoing experiments. Additionally, scenes that included his character were the ones with the most potential for bloodshed, craziness, and destruction. Call me a sucker but I loved how he would change up a scene and own it.

As for the problematic and/or negatives of this book. The price is definitely a factor but I'm not suggesting it's too pricey or out of the norm for this author's work. I'm simply addressing that the purchase price may give potential readers pause. End result. I do feel the story line is unique for the series though it has a degree of predictability in that the heroine is wanted by bad guy element with the hero needing to come to her rescue. Angst, mystery (who done it mystery to figure out), suspense, action/adventure, and a core romance sweeten the plot to round out the complete story which I feel was worth every penny I paid. I almost (ALMOST) did jump chapters about mid way through (which definitely would have changed my opinion) as there was just too much confusion and busyness to absorb. Luckily that's when I took one of my breaks and got back into it which I'm glad I did as the BEST parts of the story began to emerge.

This stand alone installment does have all the bells and whistles that fans of the series will enjoy. Personally, I felt 'some' of the secondary characters spoke to me and made the story much more meaningful (vague reference to tearjerker tag) though the overall story line definitely held my interest from cover to cover. Totally appreciated the epilogue and glimpses into the next installment which I definitely will be grabbing.

Cullen Maverick is a recessed gene Bengal Tiger Breed who has lived among and worked with the Navajo Nation as the Commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Agency. After losing his wife to cancer ten years ago, he’s kept himself closed off, even from the woman he suspects may mean more to his hidden Tiger.

Chelsea Martinez has been in love with Cullen for as long as she can remember, and has even worked for him for the past four years. But he’s put off her need to do more than push papers in the office, so she’s decided it’s finally time to leave the Law Enforcement Agency. Yet her resignation may push the recessed Tiger in Cullen to rip free and take over.

Prior to starting Wake a Sleeping Tiger, I went back and read my notes from the previous couple titles and realized that I had all but given up on the Breeds series, as it had become convoluted, full of new characters I didn’t care about, and frankly the editing left much to be desired in the storylines. But since I’d already picked up this title for review, I decided to go in with as much of an open mind as possible, and wow, am I glad I decided to read Wake a Sleeping Tiger! Overall, the writing and story are MUCH tighter than the previous books. There wasn’t really any wandering and meandering from thought to thought, but rather the story stayed focused on the romance between Cullen and Chelsea, as well as her work and the related story of the Cerves.

Cullen and Chelsea made a fantastic pair. Their romance was hot, and the story was filled with amazing sexual tension. And although there were definitely times when the couple kept their innermost true feelings to themselves, it didn’t dominate the story nor was it a reason they stayed apart from one another. Chelsea was very open from the beginning, telling Cullen: “Just go home and stop trying to protect me. It was never your protection that I wanted.” She shared her fears over the mating, yet didn’t fight him about it. I did get a little frustrated with Cullen because he didn’t share his fears and frustrations with Chelsea, but his inner-thougths conveyed to the reader his own fears and limitations. One thing that I’ve learned from this series is that the male Breed needs an independent female who is his equal, even though it drives him and his animal crazy. If she can’t stand up to him, she can’t handle his beast. This is very true with Cullen, as he is a Primal Breed.

In the end I really enjoyed reading Wake a Sleeping Tiger. It was a straight-forward story and a delightful, sexy Breed romance. Whether or not it actually forwarded the story, I’m not sure, but I like that it wasn’t full of hidden plots. I was glad to see some familiar faces and I truly hope the series is back on track. Wake a Sleeping Tiger has renewed my interest in the Breeds series.

I love getting lost in Lora Leigh's Breed world and WAKE A SLEEPING TIGER was a great new addition to the series. It had new twists and turns that added suspense to the story and kept me flipping the pages. This series never gets old and I always look forward to picking up a new release because I know I'm going to get a great story and a hot romance. The Breed series is about genetically engineered human/ animals that were raised in labs and it is set in the future. If you're new to this series, the beginning of the series is currently unavailable because it was published with a different publisher, but Lora Leigh plans to rerelease them. I started with MEGAN'S MARK, the first book published with Penguin, and that would work for new readers. I recommend reading them in order to follow the series storyline, but each book can be read as a standalone. If you're following the series, Lora Leigh announced that Cassie's book is next! I'm so excited and can't wait! I highly recommend this series for paranormal lovers. It's a suspenseful and highly erotic paranormal romance series. The Breeds are addicting!

Lora Leigh can always be counted on to turn up the heat. WAKE A SLEEPING TIGER was definitely hot and in many ways it fits in nicely with the classic stories in the Breeds series. I think my enjoyment of this book was hindered by the fact that this is so far into the series and I don’t think there’s a lot more left to explore that hasn’t been done before.

It is crazy to say we are at book 31 in the Breeds series. And crazy still that I’m still reading them. Here’s the thing. WAKE A SLEEPING TIGER is pretty classic Lora Leigh and I actually think had this not been book 31 I probably would’ve enjoyed this more than I did. And it’s not necessarily that I didn’t enjoy it. But after so many books, things get repetitive even when we are dealing with new characters and new situations. It all feels a bit like it’s been done before. What I loved in book 8 won’t get the same reaction out of me in book 30, and that’s what’s going on with these books. The hero finds his mate, mating heat comes into play, there’s a danger to the heroine’s life for some reason that the hero needs to keep her safe. This didn’t stray from that formula and overall, I think I enjoyed these two more than maybe the past few books in the series. However, I think I just need this series to get to a finishing point. The only reason I keep reading is because I need to know what happens with Cassie and get her book once and for all. If it’s not the next one, I’m not sure that I’ll continue.

But back to this book! The hero was previously married and knew his wife wasn’t his mate. Him being a recessed breed, his animal side wasn’t affecting him as other males of his species. He was able to hold off mating heat until his mate decides to quit her position working for him at the Law Enforcement Agency. She wants to be in the midst of the action, using her honed skills, and Cullen just wants to keep her cuddled and safe. Her actions spark his recessed genes and push him to lose control.

I can’t remember if we’ve heard about these two interacting before so when things finally come to a head between them at the beginning of this book it felt like a bit rushed for me. Obviously with the history between them I understand they aren’t. The chemistry between Cullen and Chelsea worked well for me. They definitely have sparks and I liked her character as well. She wants to be useful in the field she’s chosen and won’t stand to have anyone get in her way.

I feel like a bit part of this book is dealing with smaller issues that pertain to this group of characters and I felt like it wasn’t advancing the overall series arc much. That is until we get to the very end. The ending bit of this book was exciting for me because I may see a glimpse of something setting up that I’m definitely interested in seeing. I just hope it goes in the direction I’m expecting and doesn’t continue dragging.

So overall, this is a good book but if you’re a fan of the series already and have read them all then you may start considering them boring and repetitive. Lora Leigh can still write a hot sex scene even though I thought we could’ve done with a few less of those in this book. But the animalistic side of the breeds shows so much passion that you can’t help but be drawn in by them. I am hopeful that the next book will give me what I want so I’ll be anxiously awaiting it.

This is my original "guilty pleasure" series and so will always have a special place in my heart. That said, Wake a Sleeping Tiger was a tad repetitive (poor Cullen must have no teeth left he "ground his molars" so often) and with many episodes of "mating heat" (yawn, nothing new there). However as the series moves towards its end and the final story arc begins to play out, I am still invested enough to have to know...who is Cassandra Sinclair's mystery mate.. my money is still on

Nothing frustrates me more than reading about two adults who are too stupid to communicate with each other. I hate when the main conflict in a couples' relationship could be solved with a few words. Specifically, when the only problem is their refusal to talk to each other. But they can't because REASONS. I'm not expecting them to proclaim their love, but cheese and rice, how about telling the other person about anything else? I'm happy, confused, worried, etc? Or how about asking them to explain themselves to you? A simple "what do you mean?" can clear up a lot of assumptions.
If you're this far into the series you know what to expect and it's all here, but you have to read about these two knobheads to get to it.

Shadow's review:

Lora Leigh has roared into a top notch book with her latest breed book, Wake a Sleeping Tiger.

In this suspenseful novel, we learn more about Cullen Maverick, the head of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Agency, and a recessed breed.

He stays recessed until Chelsea Martinez, with whom he has had a connection since she was a child, had had enough of his keeping her away from the job for which she has trained for many years, and decides to leave. As he waits for her to return and learns she is in danger, he finds his animal traits coming out more and more. His brother thinks that like him, Cullen is a Primal, he just hasn’t been awakened yet.

As the attacks on Chelsea continue, and her new job places her in even more danger, Cullen finds his inner animal strength. Can these two unlikely mates find out who is targeting a high profile breed, keep Chelsea safe and forge a working relationship?

The books is well written, with likable characters, a complex plot and sex scenes hotter than the Arizona desert where its set. While this is a stand alone story, it wouldn’t be my choice to introduce someone to the breed series. The background is explained, but without knowing the history of the characters, the reader would miss a lot.

Cullen starts off seeming very cold, but as he realizes how much Chelsea means to him, he becomes warmer and oddly enough, more human. Chelsea is a strong woman, who isn’t going to let anyone keep her from her warrior destiny.

We get to meet some new characters as well as revisit some we have already met and for long term fans, we have a lot of Cassie in this story-and possibly a set up for her story.

This is a remarkable addition to this series and deserves it's five star rating.

This might be a DNF just because I am a little confused and feel like I'm missing some context going into book 22 or 18. I had seen this series before by Lora Leigh, and it reminded me of the one by Laurann Dohner. At the local library, I was browsing the shelves, and this book caught my eye.

It's a shame I think I won't continue to read this book because I love the formatting & size of the book. I know that's a weird thing to say, but the previous book I read wasn't as enjoyable as it could have been had it been a physical book. I like the fonts here too.

In case I ever want to return to this book, I got to page 45. I do like the book so far though.

Man may believe he created them, but a much higher power breathed life into them, and that power is refining them and redefining them, daily.” - Quote from the book.

Wake A Sleeping Tiger is book twenty two in the Breeds series by Lora Leigh. Now you can read the books as stand alone, but their is also a main plot-line that continues in each book even though we focus on one breed and his/her mate.

I had some trouble when I started this novel. It had been sometime since I read a book in the Breeds series and so, I was a bit lost, until I got farther along and things started to come back to me.

Theirs tension, suspense, action and a whole lot of sexy Breeds. I really loved the journal entries of Dr. Ambrose, Geneticist, Genetic Theorist and the journal entries by Graem, Cullen’s brother, on the Recessive Breeds. They added a fun element. The story stays focused on the romance between Cullen and Chelsea, as well as her work and the related story of the Cerves.

Cullen and Chelsea made a wonderful pair. Their romance is hot and full of sexual tension. Cullen wants Chelsea around, but won’t move on his feelings and keeps holder her back in the Law Enforcement Agency. Well, Chelsea has had enough and leaves. A Breed even if Recessive will not let the women that is his go. I liked that Chelsea was open from the beginning. She shared her fears over the mating and didn’t fight him about it. Cullen on the other hand didn’t share and that is a bit frustrating, thou we do get his inner thoughts, so the reader understands his fears and concerns.

This series and the novels are full of sexy times. The author does a great job working them into the story, so they flow with everything else and aren’t just sex scene after sex scene. As for the Breeds, when they find their mate nothing will stop them from showering her in Breed Heat.

Last, I was blown away at the twist at the end. OMG. I’ve been in love with Cassie from the moment she hit the pages in Elizabeth’s Wolf as a child then, but now she’s an adult and to have that twist, just blew me. I didn’t see it coming. Great job on the author hiding it until the very last moment.

Overall, Wake A Sleeping Tiger was a delightful read.

Awesome ending. Now I want to know if the author is going to make a story for Makenzie (Kenzie) and Cassandra(Cassie).

Another amazing book in this series. Very well written and wonderful storyline. If you have not read the other books in this series you maybe a little confused on the other characters and their stories but it can be read as a stand alone but I would suggest reading the other books in this series since all of them are intertwined with each other. If you are a lover of this author like me. You know Lora always leaves us with a twist needing more of her work.
About the Book:
Science created them half man half animal but man can not breathe life into the being alone. Breeds live their lives as each day is a gift a miracle because at anytime it could be their last.
Cullen Maverick is a recessed Bengal breed who lost his wife many years ago. He is now Commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Agency and likes his life in order.
Chelsea Martinez is Cullen's assistant and covert agent for the agency. She wants to leave the agency to find her own way. He doesn't want to let her go but he does. He hopes she will be back.
When Chelsea takes another job putting her in danger Cullen invades making her life a living hell. His Bengal instincts awakens and is solely focused on Chelsea. Breeds have so little to hold onto and all he can do is protect her but at what cost. Can they compromise with each other to find their way? Will the danger tear them apart even farther? Can two souls become one not just mates but soulmates?

I know I keep saying that I won't read anymore of the series but I got this one for FREE. It still wasn't worth it. They are all the same story, same characters with different names. Females that whine when they are discouraged from physically fighting evil men and seeking dangerous situations, and Males who are just as whiny about keeping their "mate" from danger. There are always kidnappings, a life threatening injury and finally a happily ever after. This series really should have ended a LONG time ago. Time to put the cash cow out to pasture already!

Why am I NEVER reading another Breed book?

Title:  Wake a Sleeping Tiger
Series:  Breeds Book #31
Author:  Lora Leigh
Genre:  Romance, Paranormal, Shifters
Blurb:   On a moonless Navajo night, the recessed Bengal Breed known only as Judd became Cullen Maverick, grandson to one of the Chiefs of the Six Tribes of the Native Americans.

Bengal genetics, usually so fierce as to be labeled primal, was recessed so deep inside Judd that no hint of it can be found. A phenomena so rare it’s been notated only a few times. And there’s no way, it’s believed, to force those genetics free once they’ve disappeared past the genetic level.

Now, as commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Division in Window Rock, New Mexico, Cullen leads his six agents in protecting the treasures of the Navajo Tribes by ensuring they remain safely in Navajo possession.

Added to this mix is none other than the delicate Window Rock police detective determined to stick her pretty little nose in his business.

And once Cullen realized the animosity that keeps flaming between them is far more than he imagined, then the Primal Breed that’s lurked inside him comes out to play. And when that beast decides to make itself known, Cullen suddenly remembers all the reasons it was better off sleeping.
Thoughts: The Breeds series by Lora Leigh is a series that is still going strong – sure, there have been lulls and dips in the series with some books standing out more than others – but with book number 31 that is simply to be expected. This book gives us the story of Judd, AKA Cullen (Gideon/Greame’s twin brother) and his mate Chelsea, and I honestly really loved the book. Chelsea in particular made the book for me – she was such a strong, dominant character who was just a genuinely likeable person that you found yourself as a reader really getting involved in the story. Surprisingly enough, Gideon/Greame’s character has lightened up a lot from how we seen him in his own book and provides quite a bit of lightheartedness to the book. Great addition to the series and can’t wait for more!
Keep in mind that the series is best read in order, so you have a feel for the series and the characters – as well as a feel for the world itself. While you can skip a book or two and continue on without missing too much, I recommend all of them…

It is really hard for me to be objective at the moment, as I think it is pretty clear in this book that we are not getting Cassie's story anytime soon - which is getting frustrating. I'd settle for a Dane book instead, or Brim or Eli, but LL has introduced a new character, and it looks like she is getting her story next. After all this waiting for Cassie, she better get Dog or I am deleting all my Breeds books.

But on to the review.
I have found the last few Breeds books a little confusing, so I was relieved this was a little more straightforward. The interactions between Cullen and Graeme were very interesting, probably the best sibling dynamics she has written. But the story itself - I felt like I had read it before. Cullen I liked, he was a bit different to other breed males - less intense. Chelsea - blah. Isabella, Claire, Gypsy, Honor, they might as well be the same character.

There is lots of Cassie in the book, and Ashley - but they feel underdeveloped as characters. In fact, Ashley is beginning to feel like a parody of the Ashley we first met. Not enough Dog. Guest appearances by Rule and Lawe - who just seem dull now they are mated.

Indeed, I feel that since we moved to Window Rock, the whole series has lost its way a bit. Breed world just does not seem very dangerous anymore. Where is the mystery to be solved? The ongoing development of the breed community? I don't know anymore about the Navajo nations involvement with the Breeds than I did at the start. What do all these secret, covert agencies do? Where do they resettle the Breeds? It all seems to revolve around one family, who frankly I don't really care about or like. Chelsea (and her friends and cousins) need to get a bit of Megan Arness's backbone. They are just not as interesting as Scheme, Cassa, Anya or Ria etc. who all had great, often disturbing (Harmony!) backstories, unlike the Window Rock girls.

Wake A Sleeping Tiger
3.5 Stars

A huge improvement over the last book, which was virtually unreadable. Leigh provides the necessary background information rather than expecting the reader to have read and/ or remembered the previous 3-4 installments. This is especially important given the numerous aliases used by various characters.

In addition, this book has an actual plot rather than a collection of mismatched scenes and barely coherent scenes. The mystery surrounding the attempts on Chelsea's life is compelling, and the resolution makes sense. That said, the transition between the initial events and the revelation of the culprits does not flow smoothly, i.e., a certain character's personality undergoes a complete 180 in order to introduce the villain and the motive.

The romance is also more appealing mainly due to the fact that Chelsea and Cullen's relationship is not only based on physical attraction (as in many of the previous books). Rather, there is also a strong emotional connection that serves as a foundation for their sexual interactions.

Overall, this is one of the better books in the series and it introduces some interesting new directions for further development. Cassie's book is next and I look forward to reading it.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

The recessed breed is a novelty and none more so than Cullen formerly known as the lost breed, Judd. Cullen felt he had to suppress his breed genetics during his time in the labs in an effort to lessen the chances of causing pain to those around him. After all, his twin Gideon, had enough breed genetics inside him to be a Primal.

Fast forward to present day, Cullen is a run of the mill law enforcement officer just trying to live his life and do his job. That's hindered by the fact that Chelsea (his personal assistant) wants to be more than just a warm body in his office. She wants to be on the front lines, saving breeds from the Council soldiers. When she resigns and Cullen gives into temptation, his breed genetics slowly begin to emerge.

As Cullen learns to accept his emerging breed genetics, he also must come to terms that the woman he watched grow up is his mate. And someone is trying to hurt her.

Chelsea must always come to terms with the new Cullen. She was prepared to accept the man into her bed and in her life, but the emerging genetics has changed everything. That only makes her love him more, even if he is stubborn and hardheaded.

This story keeps you engaged from the first page to the last, showing you familiar faces and introducing new ones as well. To me, this story marks a definite turning point in the series and I have feeling we will be seeing a lot more those familiar faces in the books to come.

Good story! I really like Graeme, even if he's insane! Cullen seems dull compared to his twin! Lots of mating heat! Interesting cliffhanger regarding Kenzi and Cassie!
