This book is probably a part of so many family's - as it is for my own. In Pat Moon's story, David is living in the late '70s, and due to a family bereavement, he has to go to a funeral, his grans. A short while later, his mum gets a call that her father (David's grandfather) is not coping and it is decided to get David to visit on the basis that 'David' is not coping with the summer hols!

David is upset over this as he has plans to go camping with his friend, and also because it is a lie. However, he comes to realise that needs to do the deed and travelling by coach he arrives and settles in with his grandfather.

There are lots of little nuances about how David is growing up, but the main thread is about how David discovers a photograph like himself, but subtly different, and how he gangs up with Hannah to investigate and discover the story. Importantly, what is central to this story is that of a death hidden away and the baggage that everyone carries around on their shoulders because of it.

My own family have something very similar, in our case my younger brother, so I can fully understand the family and also the effects that the death causes.

I would recommend this book, but I think that it needs to be supported by discussion in school or within the family to explain some of the nuances.

I got totally bored until I read the last 20 pages. Then liked it! It was SO sad...

I really like the character Hannah. She's feisty but fun, determined and clever. And she had a sense of humour.

I wasn't to keen on David which is bad as he's the main character... oops.

Aunty Bird was quite... um... different. She's always upbeat (unless thinking about Eric...)

Overall, a little bit disappointing.
