FROM AUTHOR'S WEBSITE: I'm a native of central Maine, and grew up on a small farm with a wonderful mom and dad, three sisters and a brother. Most of my books take place in small towns, many of them in Maine.

My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!

Our children are all home-schooled. When Jim retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, we moved from Maine to Kentucky.

I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books.
Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.

For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

Mountain Christmas Brides is a wonderful collection of Christmas novellas by a host of Christian fiction authors. Some of the authors were new to me, while others were old favorites. Each brought their unique writing style and creativity to the project, which made it something of an adventure to read. When I began each new novella, it was fun to discover what made this particular story shine brightly among the others in the book. This collection would make a great gift, and Christmas is coming quicker than we know.

Here are my thoughts on a few of my favorite novellas in Mountain Christmas Brides:

A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky
What if a mail-order bride was unwanted by the groom? Carrie Turansky’s A Trusting Heart is a beautiful answer to that question. She uses emotions well to pull in the reader. Her characters invoke hope even when things look their gloomiest. The heart with which she writes is quite exquisite and is evident on each page.

A Carpenter Christmas by Mary Davis
Aw! A Carpenter Christmas was so sweet I stayed up way too late to finish it. The romance of Willum and Natalie made me laugh, cry, chuckle, sigh, smile, giggle, gasp, and ask, “What in the world is he doing?” It’s found a place in my heart, and I hope it will yours too.

Almost Home by Susan Page Davis
Almost Home surprised me. I’ve never before read a story about a couple of folks traveling through a blizzard, nor would I have expected such a treasure of a tale to come of it. But put the pen in Susan Page Davis’s hand, and the dreary premise suddenly turns downright entertaining, winding its way around my heart. So glad to see she’s still on top of her game. I’m certain many readers will pass her stories along to the next generation.

I enjoyed this Christmas collection of novellas. Although I pretty much liked all of the books, there were some I enjoyed more than others. A few of the novellas are connected, with overlapping characters and settings. They did all seem able to stand alone, though, even if they had characters in common.

One of my favorite stories of the collection was A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky. I felt sorry for the situation that Annika found herself in and enjoyed watching the way the entire scenario played out.

The other stories that stood out as favorites of the collection for me were: One Evergreen Night by Debby Lee, All Ye Faithful by Gina Welborn, and A Carpenter Christmas by Mary Davis. These stories took place around a logging camp and I just really enjoyed the setting and watching the various characters find their happily ever afters.

The remaining stories were set during a Colorado blizzard and were about a set of friends finding their own happy endings and true love in each novella.

I adore reading Christmas books! I think I may have mentioned that a few times this year. I love the time of year and reading books specifically centered around winter and Christmas just makes everything more special. This collection of Christmas novellas is a great way to boost the Christmas spirit. Full of faith, romance, and all things Christmas.

From Wyoming to Washington, you will be swept off your feet as these couples conquer the odds and true love prevails.

Snuggle up in your favorite reading spot with a blanket and mug of your favorite steaming beverage (if you have a fireplace, even better), and get lost in the mountains of the west.

I received a copy of Mountain Christmas Brides from Carrie Turansky as a gift. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

"A Trusting Heart" by Carrie Turansky is an excellent twist on the mail order bride plot line. Now most have read the typical story, detailing a man and woman writing each other for marriage and partnership; however, this take has a meddlesome father pulling the strings without anyone being the wiser. Can love blossom from deception? Only God knows the plans He has declares from the beginning, and sometimes He can use others around us to bring this plans to fullfilment. Dive into this story of heartbreak, sickness, and love like they have never known before.

"Home for the Holidays" by Mildred Colvin has created a wonderful tale that portrays the cliche, never judge a book by it's cover, in a new and exciting way. If you want to take a load off and dive into a romantic novella, then you have definitely come to the right place. Come check out the wonderful story about a tomboy finding love without having to become the proper lady everyone had been expecting her to be. Love is a mysterious thing that affects everyone differently, and the most important thing to remember is that God accepts us (and loves us) just the way He originally created us to be.

"One Evergreen Night" by Debby Lee had so much potential. I know that this book is comprised of nine novellas, but Ms. Lee had a real novel going that was roughly cut off at the end. I feel as if they selected the back half of her novel and cut it out, leaving us with two different splices and a mess to weave through. Luckily, however, the saving grace with this novella was that the plot line was phenomenal. The way her characters meshed so well together makes the reader want more. I would like to know where Jake ends up and if he is happy. I would like to know if Abigail had a thing for Fredrick and that was why she was angry all the time; or was it because the rich and handsome Stanely was showing the 'lesser class' girl more attention. Then there was the build up between the dominaneering leaders and the meager workers, will we ever know what came of this fued? So many questions and only the rest of the novellas can tell us what will happen next, they only trouble is they are all be different authors with their own surprise twists.

"All Ye Faithful" by Gina Welborn was a different sort of novella, and really stood out as a 'don't judge a book by it's cover' type novel. When reading the previous novellas, you would think that this wealthy family found within this story had it all. I know that money doesn't give you everything, but this family really seemed to have more than most in the happiness department. Behind every closed door, hidden skeletons can be hidden, and the truth is sometimes a hard- bitter- pill to swallow. I did enjoy "All Ye Faithful," it really helped to place some of the puzzle pieces to the mysterious plot line we have spreading out over these nine novellas.

"A Carpenter Christmas" by Mary Davis was extraordinary. Each novella so far shared bits a pieces from previous stories before them, this one though was the condensed love story before the carpenter and the preacher's daughter. To know who you want to spend the rest of your life with, especially at a young age, is a truly wonderful (yet terrifying) experience; having it all happen at 17 with the entire town watching must have been dramatic. When love is true and pure, it is beautiful and majestic; however, that does not mean it will be without its doubts and fears- as our main characters are forced to find out on their own. Only combined faith in God can heal something has been broken.

"Fires of Love" by Tamela Hancock Murray is an individual story line in the midst of a series. Each novella thus far has played off of the one before it, in one way or another, until now. The love between the main male lead, Maximilian, and the female lead, Thalia, began again by the fires on winter's evening in the midst of a blizzard. Sometimes life can throw curve balls that no one is expecting, but it's how well those curve balls are handled which truly defines a person. Throughout all the lies which were told, prejudices that were placed, and others that stood in the way: the main characters learned that love truly does conqueror all. Remember, first and foremost, Love is Patient.

"Almost Home" by Susan Page Davis

First let’s acknowledge how beautiful the cover of this book is! It really evokes that country holiday feel. I always tend to read more faith based fiction during the holidays and Mountain Christmas Brides is perfect for that. There are nine short romance stories in this book (and isn’t it easier to find time to read short stories during the busy holidays?). Some of the stories are better than others, however I did have a couple of favorites. A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky is a sweet story involving a mail order bride. The writing was simple and straight-forward and included elements of Swedish Christmas traditions which I found really interesting. My other favorite was One Evergreen Night by Debby Lee. It includes interesting historical elements of life in a logging camp and a piglet named Bacon! If you enjoy sweet, romantic holiday fiction stories, then I recommend you give this book a try.

Nine authors have written sweet Christmas stories of romance in the mountains. Each story is tied together by the theme of faith, Christmas spirit, and celebrations in the mountains.

I enjoyed all of these stories, but a few were favorites of mine. And there were a couple that I've read previously, either in another novella collection or a single book. But it was nice to go back and re-read them. This book would be the perfect companion on a cold winter day to curl up with a blanket and get into the Christmas spirit. Each story is tied together by the theme and a couple had characters that overlapped. Overall, I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more by these authors.

2.5 stars. The Carrie Turansky story was definitely the best, but it was also the only one that wasn’t connecting to the others in the collection which I thought was strange. The remaining 8 novellas had two sets of 4 interconnecting stories.

Mountain Christmas Brides is an historical romance anthology of nine loosely connected Christmas stories. The connection is more of one by place even though a few had connecting characters too. Four involve a logging camp and the other four take place during a blizzard. All are inspiring and faith building novellas, giving Christmas the reflection that it deserves.

They are:
A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky
Home for the Holidays by Mildred Colvin
One Evergreen Night by Debby Lee
All Ye Faithful by Gina Wellborn
A Carpenter Christmas by Mary Davis
Fires of Love by Tamela Hancock Murray
The Best Medicine by Lena Nelson Dooley
Almost Home by Susan Page Davis
Dressed in Scarlet by Darlene Franklin

I was not familiar with many of these authors but found all the stories to be well written. I did have favorites but would read any of these authors work again. While I enjoy the idea of being snowed in or stuck in a blizzard, it was a logging camp story that wound up being my favorite; One Evergreen Night by Debby Lee. Almost Home by Susan Page Davis is another one that stood out as being a particularly enjoyable one for me. Well worth the cost and the time to read this anthology, putting you in the Christmas spirit no matter the time of year.

Just mentioning the words "Christmas" and "brides" in the same sentence, conjures up endless scenarios for cozy romance. Nine novellas capitalize on this holiday spirit as their stories, while varied, and at times blended, find a way to say "I do" after blizzards and record snowfalls force tender moments and quiet conversations.

Particularly well written are "A Trusting Heart" by Carrie Turansky and "Almost Home" by Susan Page Davis, both authors whose full length novels have been consistently enjoyed. Pleasantly surprising were "Dressed in Scarlet" by Darlene Franklin and "The Best Medicine" by Lena Nelson Dooley.

All in all, this is the kind of story collection to pull out and savor; comfortably tucked under a warm, favorite blanket or simply enjoyed on a hot summer day, to make it seem as if the holidays are just around the corner. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in return for my honest opinion.

I won a copy of this Novella Collection and am so glad I did. What a perfect way to get in the holiday spirit. This would make a nice gift. Some of the authors were old favorites and others were new to me. Each has their unique writing style and bring something different to the table. I especially loved A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky. She brings such life to her characters, has such a way with words, and a twist to this mail order bride story. I loved the Faith and family themes throughout. Another standout to me was A CarpenterChristmas by Mary Davis. My husband is a carpenter, so I identified with this story. It is well written and very touching. Almost Home by Susan Page Davis doesn't disappoint and Darlene Franklin closes out with a heartwarming tale of Dressed in Scarlet. This deals with two classes of people thrown together in a blizzard. Can love overcome social boundaries? Pick up a copy and cuddle up for an enjoyable evening of reading.

There is just something about the Christmas season that makes my romantic heart just a little more lovey dovey. Throw Christmas and new romance together and its a home run. This compilation of novellas has the right amount of new love, romance, drama and climatic points. Every couple was faced with trials and tribulations, but with love and God's guidance they came out stronger in their faith and love for one another.
I enjoy stand-a-lone novels and I enjoy series. I have a tendency to get wrapped up in a series and can't stop reading until the whole series is complete. I really liked that this compilation had a few stand-a-lone novellas as well as some that could be considered a series because of overlapping characters and story lines.
I would definitely read this compilation every year during the Christmas season and would even gift to fellow book lovers!

I have only read one of the Novellas so far -- A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky. It was such a sweet story! I have always been fascinated by the idea of mail-order brides. This story gives us an idea why a woman might choose this journey, and what that journey might have entailed. Carrie gives readers fun characters, a story with some surprises, and a glimpse at some Swedish Christmas traditions. It was a very nice way to spend a summer evening! Looking forward to reading the other stories -- if they are as good as this one, I'll be very pleased!

Mountain Christmas Brides: Nine Historical Novellas Celebrate Faith & Love in the Rocky Mountains

This is a wonderful collection of Christmas novellas set in the Rocky Mountains during the 1880's. A theme of faith, Christmas spirit and family tie the novellas together.

A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky
October 1880...Annika Bergstrom leaves her home in Chicago to become a mail-order bride in Laramie, Wyoming. Will her groom, Charles Simms, be all he appears in the letters they shared? She certainly hoped and prayed so. However, she has a surprise once she arrives in Laramie—a life altering surprise. What is she to do now? Charles has a big surprise of his own—one he did not like or appreciate. Thus Charles and Annika find themselves in a situation that they are not sure how to “fix”. This story is filled with hope, even when things look bleak. It will tug at your heartstrings and emotions. There are certain characters that I liked more than others and one that captured my heart.

...(the next 4 novellas are set in Tumwater, Washington Territory)...
Home for the Holidays by Mildred Colvin
October 1888...Tumwater, Washington Territory...Anna Wilkin, is a petite, feisty woman who would rather go fishing than dress up in fancy gowns, be bothered with boys or romance. Jeremiah Tucker, a logger from Seattle, has no plans on falling in love ever again and risk loosing the one he loves. However, God may have other plans for the both of them. I like the way they meet and their unusual courtship. This is a fun and heartwarming story that had me laughing and shaking my head at the situations in the story-line.

One Evergreen Night by Debby Lee
September 1889...Tumwater, Washington Territory...Emma Pearson is determined that her brother will stay safe. So, with that in mind she stays near him by working in the logging camp. One man in the logging camp, Frederick Corrigan, the train engineer, seems to invite danger as far as Emma is concerned. She warns her brother over and over to stay away from Frederick and thereby dangerous situations. Will her brother listen to her warnings? Will Emma's heart? I like that we return to Tumwater and some of the characters. We see how fears and challenges are faced and following God's leading in their lives. A fun and heartwarming story.

All Ye Faithful by Gina Welborn
December 1890...Tumwater, Washington Territory...Larkin Whitworth longs for the love of her life but her father has a stubborn mind and won't listen to reason. What can she do to change his mind? When a potential scandal threatens, can the truth set her free? E.V.— Eric Valentin Renier IV—is in love with Larkin, has been for years. How can he prove himself worthy and convince her father he is not after her money? Surprise situations and an opportunity develop that may be the answer for both Larkin and E.V. I was so happy to see Larkin and E.V.'s story. This story is filled with hope despite how things appear. Fun, heartwarming story.

A Carpenter Christmas by Mary Davis
June 1891...Tumwater, Washington Territory...Natalie Bollen's heart knows what—or who—it wants, but does the gentleman even notice her? Well, she has decided he will notice her! Willum Tate is a busy man and has doubts about finding love again.
Dare he risk his heart again? This is a cute, fun story that had me chuckling at times and in tears at other times.

...(the next 4 novellas are set in Denver, Colorado)...
Fires of Love by Tamela Hancock Murray
December 1913...Denver, Colorado...Thalia Bloom is hosting the first Christmas party of the season and is a bit nervous. All is going well with one exception, Maximillian Newbolt is there. The one man she did not want to see—he broke her heart all those years ago. Maximillian on the other hand is not sure what Thalia thinks about him and is hoping for forgiveness at least. In the midst of a blizzard another crisis occurs, potentially giving them a second chance. What better time to find each other anew than being stuck inside during a blizzard? Can they move past their heartbreak and finally find love? I enjoyed the “other” crisis situation and how they handled it as well as Thalia and Maximillian's story.

The Best Medicine by Lena Nelson Dooley
December 1913...Denver, Colorado...Rose Fletcher is one of the guests and good friend of Thalia. Although she has enjoyed the Christmas party she is now stuck at Thalia's home, as are the other guests, due to the blizzard. Which is fine but she is a bit anxious about the doctor, Dr. Thomas Stanton. It seems she should know him, but how? Once she remembers, she tries to avoid him. However, Thomas seeks her out and wants to learn how the young girl he once knew has turned out. It was fun to watch these two as they danced around each other and when they finally did stop and talk... This is a fun and heartwarming story.

Almost Home by Susan Page Davis
December 1913...Denver, Colorado...Patricia—Trisha Logan was at her friend's Christmas party but is now trying to get home to her aunt before her baby is born. However, she is stuck because of the blizzard is is frantically trying to procure a way home to no avail. She begs Jared Booker to help her get home. He is reluctant to help but finally agrees. As they trudge through drifts of snow on horseback can they mend the drift between them? I enjoyed the little surprises in this fun and sweet story.

Dressed in Scarlet by Darlene Franklin
December 1913...Denver, Colorado...Natalie Daire had been to Thalia's Christmas party but decided to drive home despite blizzard conditions. She ends up having an accident resulting in her meeting Fabrizio Ricci. Now stranded at the Brown Palace hotel—where Fabrizio is employed in the garage. Natalie's kind heart shines as she helps make everyone comfortable during a trying time at the hotel. Natalie and Fabrizio come from two very different backgrounds, hers a life of privilege and his the working class. Can such two different people find love? A sweet, fun and heartwarming story. I especially like the paragraphs on page 439.

I have read a few others by these authors but this has to be my favorite. 1. I loved that each story was about 45 pages. 2. I loved that they were all intertwined even if it was just a little bit. It took me until the 3 story to figure it out but once I did I loved it. 3. I loved that it used a real life event of a true blizzard to bring it all together. 4. I love that they are clean.

***I was provided with a copy of this book via Net Galley in exchange for my review.

I'm going to break this review down by story. This book contains 8 short stories, the first 4 are connected by characters and settings as are the last 4 stories. I added together my rating for each individual story and it averaged to just under 4 stars, so that's how I got my final rating. Here are the reviews:

A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky
2.5 stars

I liked Anna and really liked Jeremiah, the heroine and hero. Yet through the whole story it felt like a short story. Almost rushed. I know it is a short story, but I don’t necessarily want to feel like the author is skimming over things. There was also an issue I had with the “voice” Anna was given. At the very beginning, I looked at her as a young woman who many dismissed due to her tomboy ways. As the story went on, the author tended to give her a childish voice that didn’t necessarily mesh with what my initial impression was. Tomboy does not equal immature.

One Evergreen Night by Debby Lee
4 stars

This was a really sweet story. There were a couple of moments that I thought would lead to something else (Frederick & Jake on the train, Emma’s feelings toward Abigail) but went nowhere. I’m not exactly sure they moved the story forward, but they weren’t lengthy so it was okay.

All Ye Faithful by Gina Welborn
4.5 stars

I loved this story. Both Larkin and E.V. are such likable characters. Plus, I felt they really did care deeply for one another. E.V. got me angry a few times with the trick Abigail was attempting and his going along (not in a mean way but in a dense way). I had to keep reminding myself of the protocol of that time and how nice people’s manners were, even to those that didn’t deserve good manners being bestowed upon them. I also found this to be the most faith driven story so far.

A Carpenter Christmas by Mary Davis
4 stars

Another sweet story. I really, really liked Willum…although I thought he overreacted a bit to Natalie’s panic attack at his cabin. Of course, I also see it through his eyes after what he experienced in the past. I especially liked the way Natalie’s parents handled things. They weren’t written as a stereotypical pastor and wife being overprotective; instead they were patient and wise in their advice and actions.

Fires of Love by Tamela Hancock Murray
4 stars

This story seemed really quick compared to the others. It surprised me, after reading so many stories of the same town and characters to have it set in a different location and different era. It was a nice change of pace, though. For some reason (most likely because I absolutely love a good Christmas snow) I adored the setting of the majority of this story…snowed in at a beautiful estate.

The Best Medicine by Lena Nelson Dooley
4.5 stars

I am really enjoying this snowed-in Colorado setting. I liked Rose from the first story, though we didn’t see her much. I really liked Thomas in the first story…it was already evident that he was a very caring and level-headed person. I enjoyed getting to know them both better in this story. And to see their journey.

Almost Home by Susan Page Davis
3.5 stars

Another sweet story, but it confused me a bit. Why in the world would two rational and smart humans go out into a blizzard? Sure, it wasn’t snowing when they started off. But EVERYONE warned them the storm wasn’t over. It just blew my mind. Because Jared and Patricia spent a good majority of the story in white out conditions riding their horses single file, we didn’t get to experience their feelings so much as be told about the feelings. That was disappointing for me.

Dressed in Scarlet by Darlene Franklin
4.5 stars

I really enjoyed the rich girl/poor boy aspect of this story. Fabrizio is so kind and caring, as is Natalie. Yet Fabrizio is so respectful of the fact that he is “the help” while Natalie is a guest at the hotel, therefore making any relationship impossible. But not only does Natalie have other thoughts on that subject, she also finds a way to get to know Fabrizio without getting him in trouble or making him uncomfortable. It was truly a lovely story.

Overall I enjoyed this book. While there was a message of faith in all 8 stories, it wasn't overly done.

As a whole, I wish that the collection was more cohesive. The first story was excellent--but it was unique in setting and characters. The next 4 related to each other with the same setting and mention of the same characters. And the last 4 wove together similar characters and setting, also. I would have preferred just the 4 together or all 9 being linked together.

But I did enjoy most of them enough to re-read them again every Christmas, probably.

Here are individual reviews for those stories not listed separately on Goodreads. The ones that are will have links to those specific reviews.

“A Trusting Heart” by Carrie Turansky *****
I really enjoyed this one the second time around. I really loved the twist with one of the couple in the arranged marriage not even knowing about it and the other thinking they do. Then the love triangle thrown in really ratchets up the tension in a good way. I also loved the characters for the most part. And I adored the ending!

“Home for the Holidays” by Mildred Colvin ****

“One Evergreen Night” by Debby Lee *
So choppy and full of narrative. It felt like a first draft and needed a lot more fleshing out. I also didn't really connect to any of the characters. My least favorite of the collection.

“All Ye Faithful” by Gina Welborn ***

“A Carpenter Christmas” by Mary Davis ****
Really cute. I loved how both the hero's and heroine's flaws made them so relatable. I loved how both of their backstories played into the plot. I liked the writing style best so far. The only thing I didn't like were the few inconsistencies I noticed. But overall, a definite re-read.

“Fires of Love” by Tamela Hancock Murray ***
Okay. I never could like Aunt Dorcas, and there were a lot of characters to introduce at the party. But as soon as Maximilian got sick, it got better.

“The Best Medicine” by Lena Nelson Dooley **

“Almost Home” by Susan Page Davis ***

“Dressed in Scarlet” by Darlene Franklin ***
Cute. I liked the different setting and the different backgrounds of the characters, and the sweet families were a welcome change from familial conflict.

But can I just say that I'm really getting tired of the trope where both the hero and the heroine are good-looking? The majority of us can't relate to that, and Christian fiction should hopefully be encouraging relationships built on qualities other than looks.

But I enjoyed Natalie and Fabrizio's story and won't mind reading it again.

Favorite quotes:
“If he didn't keep his mind on his job, he might cut something besides a tree. He didn't need Anna intruding in his mind so much. Yep, the little bit of trouble he sensed about her could be something more than a physical injury. She had the potential to cause pain in his heart.” (p.70, “Home for the Holidays”)

“Even Ruth had to nudge the honorable-yet-stubborn Boaz into action. Time to be bold and adventurous.” (p.162, “All Ye Faithful”)

(I was given this collection as a gift.)

I've always wanted to visit the Rocky Mountains. I live in the Blue Ridge Mountain region with my home being only a 10-minute drive from an entrance to them. Mountains spell enjoyment and instantly remind me of God's wondrous creation. I can't help being filled with wonder at the beauty and knowing that God is indeed an incredible artist! Spanning three states, and leading from the 1880 to 1913, the characters' use a variety of means of transportation....horses, cars and the newly invented railroad, but romance is a common thread. Faith is another common thread among the stories and authors. Different traditions are experienced and the Christmas spirit is alive and well in the hearts of budding love.
The novellas are sweet, fun, and quick to read. I enjoy being able to read one or two of the novellas and picking up on others another day. One can easily read the entire collection in one sitting or spread them over a period of time. While the novellas are predictable in romance stories, they are well-written and research into the time periods and regions are evident.
I am rating this novella collection 4 stars and highly recommend it, whether it is read near Christmas or at another time of year. I personally enjoyed reading it in summer and thinking ahead with expectation of the coming Christmas season.

3.5 Stars out of 5

If you are looking for an easy, light read that is Christian based then this collection of short stories is a good choice for you. The stories begin in 1880's and finish through the early 1900's and they give you great insight into the traditions and customs from this era. The stories build off of each other, adding new characters or taking a supporting character from the previous story and making them the lead in the next one.

This was not my favorite collection from Barbour Publishing but the stories are well done, however, they are what I refer to as Christian light. Meaning that they do refer to God, but the redemptive message of salvation is a bit lacking. I thought that each author did a good job with their characters and story lines but there was a bit too much of "this one loves that one, that one loves this one, but they don't know they love each other" kind of theme throughout the book.

So this may not have been my favorite type of collection but the character development was well done. All the authors did a good job of furthering the story and developing the next characters. It is an easy read and the time period is one of my favorites in American history.

This book was given to me by Barbour Publishing for my honest review. To read all of my reviews go to Blessings N Bloggings/a>

Mountain Christmas Brides is an anthology set in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. It was impressive to follow the stories dated from the late 1800’s – early 1900’s. I was thrilled to see how all the novellas fit together making a complete story. Even though each novella can be read separately the reader will get more out of the book if they read each novella straight through, beginning with the first one. The authors complement one another.

Even though the title has Christmas in it this anthology can be read any time of the year, during any season. Just to give a hint, without any spoilers, the reader will read about a mail-order bride, a tomboy, a learn how and doctor cured someone with an allergic reaction. I do recommend this book to fans of anthologies.

Nine stories, two time frames. The first 1880 on a ranch in in Wyoming, the second in Washington territory at a logging camp area, the third in 1913 near Denver, Co during one of the worst snowstorms in it's history. They share characters and friends, which I love in this type of book. A mail order bride the groom doesn't know about, a tomboy, camp worker, some wealthy girls, a Parson's daughter to name a few. A delightful mix with tons of depth and characters you feel you know. If you want to cozy up with a good book that will keep you engaged, especially for the holidays, this is a great choice. Isn't that cover just gorgeous?

It's no secret I love romance novella anthologies. This olio is written by some of my favorite authors who write so well that I will pick up a menu if it had their names on it.

Beginning in the late 1800s and carrying through to the early 1900s, each of these stories celebrates Christmas with a wedding or an engagement in the Rocky Mountains, and one of them brings in a new baby. There are a couple of series included in the collection, so that you get more than one story with some of the same characters involved. It's like making a new friend, and then reconnecting with them a few times to solidify the friendship.

Nine stories in the cover of one book--life just doesn't get much better. Reading it during the heat of summer cools the soul. Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a snowball fight in the middle of summer.

My Thanks to Barbour Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book.

Some of these novellas were pretty good, some were okay, one was unreadable. So they're pretty uneven in quality. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
Quite a few of these novellas are linked (focusing on different hero/heroine pairs in a single group of people), but not all of them. Since they are novellas and have to get the guy and the girl together with their issues somewhat resolved in only 40 pages, they have some of the plot issues that you would expect. (Mostly, having ridiculous obstacles to the romantic leads' happiness that are either extremely unlikely or could be solved by the heroine having a small amount of common sense.)
My recommendation would be to get this out of the library (maybe through ILL) rather than buying it. That way you can figure out which of these authors you like so that you can read their other work.

Mountain Christmas Brides is a collection of novellas with a variety of circumstances from a mail order bride to finding romance in a logging camp to a blizzard in Colorado that brought four friends from finishing school together. Each tale is penned in the author’s creative way with drama and a budding romance. It was interesting to see how the various authors interwove the same characters from the logging camp and blizzard but had their own hero and heroine to focus upon with a faith message of love, peace, forgiveness and kindness for all.

My top two favorites were Almost Home by Susan Page Davis and The Best Medicine by Lena Nelson Dooley. This book has been on my bookshelf for a while so with Christmas approaching it was nice to have novellas to read instead of a long novel to find the happy ending.

A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky is the first novella in this collection of nine stories that as the descriptions notes--celebrate faith and love in the Rocky Mountains. This sweet story begins with Annika leaving her twin sister and only relative to travel from Chicago to Wyoming as a mail-order bride. When she arrives in Laramie, surprises greet her. Just where is her husband to be? Will she be able to become a rancher's wife when she is fearful of horses? With a few twists and turns, a gentle hero, and a sense of strong faith in God woven throughout the author brings the reader a tender story with a satisfying ending. I look forward to reading the rest of the stories in this collection.

This book tugs at the heartstrings. The first novella tugs at your heart and pulls at it and pulls and when it is done the next one just keeps on pulling until the last one is done and you just keep on wishing that there were some more novellas pulling your heartstrings. hmmm. This book makes your long days shorter, your boring rides less boring. You find yourself falling in love all over again, and again, and again. You look at your spouse in a new light and you see your GOD with a thankful heart being reminded that HE placed the people in your life the way HE did He is a great GOD..
