Ava is a typical seventeen-year-old dealing with everyday teenage problems. A job opportunity for her father takes her parents overseas. Not wanting to move, she accepts her grandmother's offer to let her live with her, until her parents return.
On her first day at school in the new town, she meets Jared Walker-tall, dark and gorgeous, with an ego to match. Ava soon discovers that there is more to him than meets the eye. He is hiding a secret that will pull her into his world and put her life in danger.
Meet Ava Delaney. Analyze the way she looks, the way she acts and who she is. Memorize who she is, because she'll never be the same again.
A lot of unnecessary detail. The story had a step by step account of everything the heroine did and every thought she had which was boring and over redundant.
"I kept the books I'd need for the next few classes and put the rest in my locker." (loc 154) Too much info.
He pulled me toward a white SUV. I wasn't sure what type it was because I didn't know much about cars." (loc 3421) Who cares if you know about cars?!?!?
"As she released me, I saw Jared take something out of the fridge. Soda. Perfect. I am thirsty." (loc 3585) Too wordy, I do not need to know every thought.
The writing was also very matter of fact and emotionless. A lot of information about the Hue and the Archaic was repeated over and over. It is as if the author forgot she wrote a description in the previous chapters.
The ending felt too good to be true as everything had to closed and put together for a happy ending. The ending also felt rushed.
You may love it. I am just writing down what did not work for me.
This was one of the most unique books I have read. Ever. The concept was so different, I couldn't stop reading it. The plot was unpredictable. I also enjoyed the romance that evolved. There were a few missteps in the plot, but that's the beauty of indie publishing. They don't have to have a formula. Overall, Regan has produced another entertaining read. Five glittery stars!
It's not that I didn't like the book, it's just that there were issues. The writing was more telling than showing. Repetitiveness was absurd. And I really just didn't feel much of the chemistry. It was like one moment they were strangers and the next they were together. I feel that if the author had an editor, or a better one, this book could have been so much better.
Going from reading her book Alpha that seemed flawed and unfinished (but still was strangely like able)to this story was an extreme shock. I liked Alpha enough that it made me look to see what else she had to check out. The story as a whole and writing was so much more likable. I loved this story! Jared was sexy and mysterious. Everything I love in a YA hero. The Heroine only ticked me off a little but I've never read a book where the heroine didn't at least a little bit. The story was refreshingly original. It wasn't predictable for me at all. The romance felt slow moving but the attraction was strong. The hero and heroins chemistry was off the charts. I'm excited for the next book . I really hate waiting. I wish there was proof that there will be a next book. Like showing the name of it and an expected publication date.
LOL I noticed a similarity between this one and the Lux series at first, but then it turned out to be sooooo much more different and that was very refreshing. Can't wait to get my hands on more novels by Regan Ure!!!!
I love this book!!! Seriously cannot wait for the next book!!!!! Please let the 2nd book in this series be the next book you write!!!! I LOVE how everything tied together but left a few cliffhangers at the end!!!
I love Regan Ure's books! Archaic put a different spin on the "supernatural" and "sci-fy" books you normally see. I loved the idea of Archaics and Hues, especially the backstory to how they came to be. The twist with Jared, Catherine and Mason was something that I kind of expected, but again, how it happened was not how I thought it would. This book is different that the books I usually go for, but none the less, I loved it!

YA paranormal books started to become very popular during my teens, and I read every one I could find. My teenage self would be in heaven with the plethora of these kinds of books on the market today. However, the huge volume of YA paranormal books being published now presents a big problem for authors. How do you make your book stand out in a saturated market? I didn't think that anyone could come up with something new for the paranormal genre, but this author managed to surprise me.
At first this book started off like most other supernatural books do with the heroine moving to a new town and meeting a hot guy she can't get out of her mind. At this point I was already writing it off as enjoyable but predictable. Even after she found out what he was, the reveal was interesting but the story wasn't that exciting for me. Then it took an unexpected turn, and the heroine went through some things that were really compelling. For awhile there, I thought the author would choose to completely throw out the YA paranormal formula and take a much darker route.
Overall, it was a good book with a satisfying conclusion. It's clear there will be a second book, but it wasn't set up with a cheap ploy. There is enough conflict left to continue the story, and I'm curious about how the Mason issue will be resolved.
I think I read this story under a different title.....what was it.....oh yeah! Twilight! Parent is moving away but daughter doesn't want to go so moves in with next closest relative in a small town, New school. She's a simple girl but sees the gorgeous guy at school and is intrigued. New friend explains that he's mysterious. She sees something unusual in the woods. She stares him and his gorgeous group of friends in the cafeteria...... I'm only on the second chapter but I hated Twilight so probably gonna quit this one since...well...It IS twilight. Honestly, did you even know which story I was actually attempting to describe above? If you said Twilight, you get a gold star! If you said Archaic, you get a gold star too.
The story line is completely predictable, i knew the solution the moment the problem manifested itself. It was boring, with a heroin falling in love because of a boys looks, no interesting dialogue or character buikdans up. I'm vertalen dissapointed and i hate that i spent money on this.
I wanted something quick and simple for the ride to NYC, and this was just that. Insta-love though, and predictable. Overall, it wasn't horrible. Just wish the author spaced somethings out a little more.
Had to take a break from the books I was reading and tried this one. Great read! wasn't like WOW OMG but it was a good read and was quick got through with it in a day Don't know how long it will take me to get around to read the next one or if I will.
If you loved twilight, then this book is a must-read, I'm disappointed that I have to wait for the next book. But, I'm excited to see what happens next
Regan Ure's Archaic series book one began with a girl named Ava. When Ava's mother and father decided to go abroad for work Ava's grandma named Anne offered to let Ava move in with her. Ava moved in with Anne her grandma and discovered a huge secret, the boy named Jared and his whole clan who live five houses down from her and Anne's house are not entirely human they are called Archaic and they have Energy that they can use as a weapon or to heal people. Ava discovered their secret. When Jared told Ava that she could be in danger she was afraid because the Archaic had a terrible enemy the Hue. The Hue had the same energy as the Archaic but there was one key difference: they had no emotions or feelings they were all about logic and science they didn't care about hurting people. When a Hue named Mason found out that Ava was special to Jared he attacked her with the intention of changing her. Mason is Jared's twin brother their mother Catherine is an Archaic and their father is a Hue who assaulted Catherine which resulted in the twins. When Ava started changing she tried to take her life but Jared found her and healed her and then he drained the Hue energy out of her and replaced it with Archaic energy hoping that it would change her into an Archaic instead of a Hue. When Ava started to show signs of the change working they were hopeful. But when Ava's energy started to appear it wasn't white like the Archaic or the Hue energy it was blue... The big question was why and what was she going to change into?
Regan Ure started writing from the age of twelve. She lived in South Africa and visited twenty seven countries and now lives in London.
This is the first book in a four book series and it is a complete series.
Regan Ure's narration is quite good and all the chapters are written from Ava's point of view which is something that I like. When you read this book everything is explained in detail and you don't have to wonder about what's going on.
Regan Ure didn't really do much world building in this book though as it was based in a small town that didn't even get a name but the story is great.
Ava the main character comes across as naive and shy and easily frightened by what happens to her but she is willing to sacrifice herself for the people she loves.
The main villain in book one of this series is Mason.
I enjoyed this series it is suitable for young adults and adults.
I recommend this book to young adult fiction lovers.

Archaic by Regan Ure is a young adult paranormal romance that follows Ava Delaney, a typical seventeen-year-old whose life changes when her family moves overseas and she is left living with her grandmother. On her first day at a new school, Ava meets Jared Walker a tall, dark, and mysterious boy hiding a dangerous secret that pulls her into a world far beyond ordinary teenage life.
The book offers an intriguing premise that combines supernatural elements with relatable teenage issues. Ava’s character is easy to connect with, and Jared adds the classic brooding, enigmatic love interest dynamic. While the story delivers a fresh take on paranormal romance, some readers may find the detailed descriptions of everyday activities a bit overdone, and the romance progresses quickly. Despite these minor flaws, Archaic captivates with its unique world-building and sets the stage for further adventures in the series.
Recommended for fans of paranormal YA who enjoy a blend of romance, mystery, and fantasy with strong character focus.
This was one of the unique books I have read. The concept was so different but also similar in ways, I couldn't stop reading it. The plot was unpredictable and predictable as well.
Similarities from this book is that 1)new girl sees something she shouldn't and then it progress from here. 2)New girl moves to a new town/city and is in the same area as the hot guy. 3) There are more the one Archaic in town. 4) Bad guy from hot guy evil comes in and attacks new girl. 5) New girl is charged into something then human, this always happens. 6) Hot guy and new girl have a pink elphanet around them. These are the top similarities that i seen within book 1.
However, it is different from the others, not aliens or half demons/half humans but mutant humans and their children. That is what i really like by this book.
The books that i felt that are similar to this one are Lux Series book 1- Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout and Divisa Series book 1- Saving Angel by J.L. Weil.
Good Story line not great writing sadly. Like most of the reviews the story was far to detailed on the little things and not enough in the areas that you wanted, like the relationship build up between the characters and explaining more of the archaic traits and life. Could be a great book with a good editor and publisher though.
Such a great plot!!!! The story was enough to keep me interested until the end - It’s just a shame the writing was soooo bad. Lots of monotonous info about showering and sleeping and getting dressed and full descriptions of boring school days. It’s such a shame because this could have been EPIC. I’m still deciding if I want to read the next one.
I normally don’t review books but this one was truly difficult to get through due to the choppy writing style and repetitive descriptions of things that detracted from the plot. I thought the premise was interesting; however, there was no natural flow to the story.I still am left wondering what the heck was even going on. Maybe it was just me…. Or maybe not.
It is a pretty decent YA, sci-fi romance novel. I enjoyed it. Ava and Jacob are drawn to each other from the beginning. The plot is interesting, the keeps you interested. It is worth the read. This is a trilogy, so I'm looking forward to the other two books.
Good book! I got so caught up in the characters and storyline that it caught me by surprise when the book ended. I thought I had at least another chapter to go. Bring on the next book!
This author has a writing style that hooks you from the start. She has created a whole new world. I can't wait to read more from her. Fans of Harry Potter and Twilight will love. I'd recommend it for young adults and up :):):)
A good clean read. Interesting premise, well written characters, interesting plot and plot twists. A better than average cliff hanger. Glad I bought this book and am ready to dive into the next one of the series.
