Gone by Midnight and Other Stories
Fans of Joyce and Jim Lavene will thrill at this collection of thirteen short stories—many are set in the worlds of their national bestselling mystery series, including the Missing Pieces Mysteries, the Renaissance Faire Mysteries, the Retired Witches Mysteries, and an upcoming mystery novel!
These stories contain the elements of mystery and fantasy the Lavenes are famous for, as well as some new things their readers have never seen. Several stories feature characters interacting with ghosts, magic, and the supernatural—the healing woman in “Courtship;” the Civil War widow in “One with the Darkness;” the city girl who summons a wizard from the past in “The Magician and the Sorceress/Accountant;” and the young introvert in “Aunt Edna” who finds her calling with help from a ghostly visitor.
Poignant, charming, and captivating, Joyce and Jim Lavene bring their characteristic wit and heart to these stories and introduce each one with a passage about its origin or how it ties into the universe they’ve created. Gone by Midnight is a treasury of tales that will delight the mind and touch the heart from one of the most prolific writing duos of our time.

GONE BY MIDNIGHT AND OTHER STORIES, is everything you love about the writing of Joyce and Jim Lavene!. I mean really, if anything is better than one book by the Lavene's, it a book full of stories by them!
The short stories included are . . Aunt Edna, Inn of May Pleasures, Ghost Dance, Assassin!, The Courtship, The Singing Tress of Jappa, The Magician and the Sorceress-Accountant, Fargan Rum, One With The Darkness, Cold Karma, Alice in Renaissance Were-land, Gone by Midnight, and Spirit Warrior.
Every story is written with the same wit, mystery, para-normal flare, and absolute brilliant writing, and imagination that have made the Lavene's two of the best writers of this generation.
If you haven't read anything by Joyce and Jim Lavene, this short story collection will give you a magnificent sampling of what these authors are all about. If you are already fans of the Lavene's, you will be as enamored with the book as I am.
I'm going to do a separate review of each amazing story in GONE BY MIDNIGHT AND OTHER STORIES, and I will add them to this review once I have them finished.

I enjoyed this book filled with a few short stories! In the beginning of the book it tells you how Jim and Joyce Lavene while driving would come up with stories and I can imagine them doing this as I read each stories. Some of the stories I really enjoyed but others did not hold my interest. I am not saying that I wouldn't recommend this book because everyone has a different taste! I have read a lot of books from these two and have never been disappointed and this book while not every story didn't hold my interest I was not disappointed in the ones I did enjoy! I was given this book for a fair and honest review! I do recommend you read this book and I would highly recommend their other novels!

I enjoyed it, really cool stories.
I was eager to read one after other of the stories. They all totally hooked me. Except one Ghost Dance which I didn't got but other were really cool to ignore that one. My fav are almost all of it; Inn of Many Pleasures surprised me, loved Assasin. Then The Singing Trees off Jappa was amazeballs and refreshing cuz I've not read anything with Scifi form Joyce and Jim Lavene. I love scif-fi and I loved it.
Am going to take each and every stories name and say I loved them and enjoyed them so in sjort just go and garb it!

Very enjoyable collection of short stories! I think of all of them, my favorite was Aunt Edna with Alice in Renaissance Were-Land and Inn Of Many Pleasures as a tie for second. Plenty of ghosts, magic, witches and the like to keep you very entertained. I teared up reading some, I giggled reading most and all were enjoyable.

Gone by Midnight is an entertaining collection of short stories which provides an ideal way for readers to become acquainted with a variety of the prolific works by the talented team Joyce and Jim Lavene. If you are already a fan of the works of Joyce and Jim Lavene you don’t want to miss the insight into the history of or beginning of a number of the most popular series they have published including; Renaissance Faire, Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade, Taxi for The Dead, Retired Witches. Missing Pieces and Christmas Tree Valley mystery series. Every story is unique, yet, each has characteristics readers appreciate in works by these authors, such as well-developed characters, settings so descriptive you can envision being there, the love of families and friends that support one another. This short story collect is definitely different than any of their more recent works. Each story is unique and the genres represented include mystery, magic, fantasy, sci-fi, the paranormal, witches and ghosts. My favorites story in this collection is “Ghost Dance”. I can completely relate to the philosophy that “visions” and/or thoughtful experimentation have led to some of the greatest advancements in medicine, science and industry to date.
Gone by Midnight is dedicated to the memory of Joyce’s mother, Joan and the memory of Joyce Lavene, who passed away October 2015. These stories, written by Joyce and Jim Lavene, are a sign of their legacy and the potential of additional books, yet to be written, based on these early previously unpublished works. This collection of short stories or anthology is a must read.

Anyone that loves the cozy mysteries of Jim and Joyce Lavene are going to want to grab a copy of Gone By Midnight. It is a collection of short stories that aren't what you would expect.
It starts with the haunting Aunt Edna, which is sad and yet beautiful at the time. It is really a lovely ghost story, not at all frightening but really heartwarming. I absolutely loved this story, but I'm prone to loving things that tug at your heart strings.
Another favorite in this collection was The Singing Trees of Jappa. Reading this story reminded me of Doctor Who. It really felt like something that would happen on that show.
The Magician and the Sorceress Accountant was funny and sweet. A woman not content with her appearance conjures up someone from the past to help change her appearance only to find this man loves her as she is. I was totally thrilled with this story.
The title story is one that just might bring a tear to your eye.
I don't want to give too much away about each story found here, because most are so short that sharing the plot gives too much away.
These stories will have you turning the pages quickly and you won't want to put the book down until you've finished, which won't be long because this collection is only about 150 pages long. The stories cover so many genres, sci fi, paranormal and even a bit of folklore, so there is definitely something for everyone here.
If you love Jim and Joyce's other books, you'll want to check this out. It will give you the answer to how they could write so many different series, because they can write anything!

Gone by Midnight is an enjoyable collection of thirteen short stories written by Joyce and James Lavene. There is something for everyone here, covering mystery, romance, fantasy, paranormal, science fiction, Native American mysticism, and more. Some take place in the worlds of their many book series.
I was surprised that some of my favorites were the science fiction offerings since Sci-Fi is not my go to genre. In particular, I enjoyed “The Singing Trees of Jappa” and the Poe-esque “Fargan Rum”. “Alice in Renaissance Were-Land” was a delightful mash up of zombies, vampires, werewolves, and dragons in a Renaissance Faire setting. It had me giggling by the end. Of course, “Gone by Midnight” was my favorite. The story about the enduring power of love is dedicated to the memory of Joyce’s mother, and it definitely pulled on the heartstrings.
I liked Gone by Midnight and recommend it to fans of short story collections. This compilation of short, quickly read tales will please fans of any genre.
I received an advance copy of this collection in exchange for an honest review. The opinions are my own.

How fun. A bunch of short stories from two of my favorite cozy mystery authors. I’ve had plans to read all of their books from every series and I’m working on that. Then these new ones pop up and I have to read them immediately. LOL
What’s a cozy without some quirky characters and a dead body or two. Plenty of that here.
And there’s even some elements of fantasy, paranormal. How cool is that!
I won’t play favorites in this collection but some stood out more than others. Especially those paranormal ones. Love a good ghost tale.
If you’ve not read these authors before, this is a good taste of their writing. Be forewarned, you won’t be able to stop at these.
And for those who’ve read Joyce and Jim’s cozies before, you’ll gobble up these short treats. New and old characters abound, many you’ll recognize. And all of them are fast and fun reads.
Grab your copy. Start from the beginning, or hop around and start anywhere. It’s all good fun from these wonderful authors.

Gone by Midnight is a delightful collection of thirteen unique short stories written by Joyce and Jim Lavene. If you’re already a fan of their books, you’re going to love this collection; if you haven’t read any of their books, you will fall in love with them after reading this collection. I have yet to read anything by the Lavenes that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. Whenever you pick up one of their books you just know it's going to be a good read. What I really enjoyed about this collection of short stories is that it gave me another peek into the creative workings of their minds. I really enjoyed all the stories and am hard pressed to pick a favorite. Though if I must choose a favorite it would be the title story: Gone By Midnight. It reminded me of a similar experience I had one I was much younger. There is only one negative about this collection of short stories. And that is that they are short stories. As I finished each story, I wanted to read more, know more about the characters. That's the sign of a great author. They leave you wanting more.

Not my favorite collection of their work.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

It's difficult in a few pages to write a wonderful story, complete, well-defined but these two authors have managed it perfectly. Each story is a real gem. In these thirteen stories there is the best of their writing, both paranormal and cozy mystery: there are ghosts, witches, zombies, mysteries to solve and characters that warm the heart. There are romantic tales, paranormal, fantasy, mystery, even about rituals of Native Americans. I loved Gone by Midnight, it is definitely my favorite. It's a sweet short-story, touching, sad but positive at the same time. Another of my favorite is Aunt Edna where a sweet ghost becomes cupid. I even loved the sci-fi stories, even if it is a genre that I rarely read because I don't like it at all.
Every time I read something by these authors I love them more and more, if you've never tried them I reccomend you do it, you will not be disappointed.

And not only are these stories entertaining but they also contain references to several of their series that revolve around witches, Renaissance Fairs, and ghosts. Great Collection!
This is a great collection of short stories by Joyce and Jim Lavene. In this collection you get thirteen short stories that are set in the worlds of the author’s many bestselling mystery series, so I was so excited to read this book. Once I started reading I wanted to hurry up and read the next one, before I knew it I was finished with all of them. It makes me want to go back and start reading all of their books again. If you love mystery books, which include some ghosts, magic, and some supernatural then you need to read this book!

This collection of short stories is a great introduction to the writing team of Joyce and Jim Lavene. I enjoy the various series this author writes. They are an interesting variety of story lines.
This collection of short stories is quite fun because it is rather different than most of their work.
The stories tend to be edgier. Many of them SciFi.
It is a fun look at another aspect (well, aspects) of this writing team.

This book was an amazing treasury of paranormal, adventure, and mystery. You won't want to put it down. It was a delightful taste of many different stories al in one place. Some I wish were longer so I could spend more time with the characters. Anyone will enjoy this book there are stories for all genre.

I liked this set of short stories. Some of the stories I enjoyed better than others. Some I enjoyed and they were just too short. Some of these stories were uplifting (Gone after midnight) and others were a little creepy or darker (think adult Goosebumps). I do recommend this as it does have something for everyone. The stories are fast paced like all stories by the Lavene's.

Gone by Midnight is an entertaining and eclectic collection of stories. From the opening sweet ghost story “Aunt Edna”, to sci-fi, fantasy, and everything in between, I enjoyed them all. My favorites were the fantasy tale within a tale, “Inn of Many Pleasures “, and the futuristic “Assasin!”.
