Broderick Steven "Steve" Harvey is an American comedian, actor, entertainer, and radio personality.
He is probably best known as the star of the WB sitcom The Steve Harvey Show, and as one of the four comedians featured in the Spike Lee film The Original Kings of Comedy.
Currently, he is the host of The Steve Harvey Morning Show, a nationally syndicated radio program.
He is also the author of Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment which was released in March, 2009.
This was a very good read. I absolutely appreciate the transparency Steve has. The wisdom nuggets shared were a reminder that we all have the ability to do great thimgs. We all need someone to help us. We cannot allow the mistakes we have made to consume us. We must get out of our comfort zone. There were misding words in some sentences and a few paragraphs were repeated, but overall this book is a must read and worthing reading again. JUMP
I enjoyed this book as much as Act Like A Success, Think Like A Success because a lot of the material is very similar but delivered with more intensity. You can hear Mr. Harvey's authentic voice coming through from the pages, delivering inspiration like he does on his talk show. A good read for everyone who is looking to accomplish more from life and is wondering what to do to get started.
I saw the jump video on my feed and it stirred up emotions in me to say the least. Typically I'll Amazon a book for the best value but the second I saw the title Jump, I jumped and threw it in the cart with no concern of price. Steve Harvey is a class act. His struggle has been realy every step of the way. I'm impressed to learn he's friends with Joel Olsteen & an "Imperfect" soldier for christ. I finished the book in two days and I feel energized and optimistic. Give this book to someone as a gift if it's not your cup of tea.
Nuggets of wisdom:
Failure is a tool not an outcome There should be nothing bigger then your dream. Your gift is the thing you do the absolute best with the least amount of effort. That is your gift.
Quotes: You have to be extraordinary at what you do. You should not settle for regular. Regular people get regular pay, live regular lives and get regular results. Inch by inch everything is a cinch
When I saw the "Jump Video" I loved it. It was spot on so when I heard there was a book I wanted it. I was a bit disappointed... but to be completely fair, I struggle with non-fiction books. I cannot seem to sit and read them like I would a fiction novel. I tend to skim through them, it was pretty good in that aspect. A lot of anecdotes but also a lot of things you have heard before. It seemed to repeat things again and again and it flowed much like he was just sitting at the table chatting with you. I liked the religious aspect of it because he did not try to hide his faith at all. That impressed me. In some ways I thought that how much credit he gave his wife took away from the idea of living your life, being happy and jumping to create possibilities for yourself because you have to do things to make sure you are happy and enjoying your life, not just making other people happy or living up to their expectations - though he did state that she was already happy and joyful so that pushed him and gave him motivation to be a better man. I wish they taught this stuff in school though - some many people would benefit from this if they were willing to listen and work on themselves!
This was a really good read. Steve shared a lot from his life's journey that was very relevant to the topic of the book. He has explicitly shared how and why he made some jumps, and walked us thro both the challenges and the achievements of his 'jumps'. It is to me , a very real and Practical read. I would encourage anyone who can get a hold of this book to read it, it definitely does encourage you to take the leap of faith in your life's journey no matter how hard.
Steve Harvey is on television seven days a week and is one of the most popular men in America. In his second book, Jump, he wrote about how he became the icon he is today; including how he sends a former elementary school teacher a television every year for Christmas because she laughed at him when he shared his dream to be on television with his classmates on career day.
Learning about other people’s experiences interests me the most, so it is no wonder that I read this book so quickly. But, besides that, this book is great for entrepreneurs because it reminds you to keep reaching towards your goal, no matter what. Now I know motivation wears thin, and eventually it can fade altogether, so that’s why I continuously read and appreciate books like Jump.
Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, Steve was raised by his mom and dad who taught him to work hard and live a life of integrity. He did just that on his way to success and even after he became successful. Remember the Miss Universe pageant when Steve called out the wrong name of the first runner-up and thus the wrong name of the new Miss Universe? Well, it turns out it wasn’t his fault, but he took the rap anyway.
Other noteworthy stories in the book include how he made it to the Apollo theater in Harlem after being dead broke just two days before. He received a chance call from a comedy club owner in Tampa who asked him to do a show on a Friday. Steve shows up, rocks the show, and is asked to perform Saturday for twice as much money. He does the show and flies to New York on Sunday in time for that evening’s show.
An interesting little tidbit about Steve’s first Apollo appearance is that Jamie Foxx was on the bill that same night and went on stage before Steve. He was booed off. Steve received a standing ovation.
Shortly after this performance, Steve was on the road with fellow comics: Bernie Mack, Cedric The Entertainer and D.L. Hughley. His first TV show, The Steve Harvey Show, had appearances from his good friend, Cedric the Entertainer. From this point forward Steve has been on a path of meteoric success.
That doesn’t mean that he hasn’t had to endure his fair share of trials and tribulations. Steve has been divorced twice and he left his kids at an early age to develop his career. He is now madly in love with his third wife, who has been his rock. Together with their seven children, the entire family is part of Steve Harvey Enterprises.
Steve Harvey Enterprises encompasses all of Steve’s business ventures, but the one I admire most is his weeklong boy’s camp that is held at his home in Dallas, Texas. Each year a camp is held to educate, inspire and uplift less fortunate young men of color. Several boys attend the camp each year and many have gone on to college because of Steve’s willingness to give back.
One last story I offer you is the one Steve’s grandmother told him. She asked if he knew who his great-great-grandfather was and he said no. She said “that’s because he didn’t leave you shit. Make sure your great-great-grandkids know your name.” Wow! Grandma was no joke. And I didn’t take her message as one either. I too want my great-great-grandkids to know my name.
All in all, this is an outstanding book. Personable, inspirational, gritty and spiritual. These are all qualities that I aspire to have. I love people and love even more to learn about their stories. Jump is about the life of Steve Harvey and how taking a leap of faith worked for him and can work for you. Have a desire to push yourself to the next level? Go for it and jump!
Steve Harvey does an excellent job of motivating people to take a leap of faith in doing what they truly believe they are meant to do. Harvey utilizes pathos and logos throughout of the book. He talks about how people are always talking about what they want to do, but make excuses as to why it can’t be done. Talking about this can cut deep with those that knows Harvey is telling the truth, which hits at the emotional aspect of the reader. He goes on to tell people that jumping isn’t necessarily just dropping everything and pursuing their dream, but taking the first step at achieving it. This ties into the logical appeal for those that would try to combat Harvey in his standings. Harvey’s book is for anyone who is looking for motivation to what they truly want with their lives. He gives tips and even allows the reader to participate in challenges. Many people have talked about how much Harvey’s books have changed their lives, with jump being added on to the list. Overall, this book has good content on how to go about life, touching base on the three different appeals enough for the reader to understand and utilize.
I knew Steve Harvey with his talk show or the host of Family Feud or as a stand up comedian. I didn't know anything about his personal life--living at one point in his car or his strong faith in God which has fueled his life and success.
The spiritual nature of his life is a thread throughout this book to his various principles of success to the Inspirational Bible verses in the final pages from the King James version of the Bible or the New Living Translation. These are verses Harvey reads and quotes often in his life.
His transparency about hosting the Miss Universe contest in 2015 and his mistake of reading the wrong name and correcting his mistake in front of billions of viewers was remarkable. I heard this audio book from cover to cover and highly recommend it. The stories and life principles woven in these pages were inspirational and enlightening.
Steve Harvey utilizes his successful life and career by sharing his own jumps in life to remind his readers that we all have a chance in life to achieve and be happy all we need to do is to have some faith and jump. Despite some repetitions, it is a joyful read and motivational. In my opinion it is by far Steve's best book as his message is sound and inspirational. Although it is more biographical than mere self-help but that what makes it more interesting. I was amused to learn more about what really happened before and after the infamous Beauty Pageant error at Miss Universe 2015. Overall, I love Steve Harvey, I find him to be a wonderful motivator, and this book is a proof of that. Jump is a delightful and easy read filled with gratitude and it is empowering. Highly recommended.
This is a really good motivational book. The central messages are dreams are essential, and persevering in the face of adversity is key. Steve provides great examples of how his many struggles helped to propel him to success. Throughout the book, Steve offers little nuggets of wisdom, and great reminders such as "inch by inch, everything's a cinch", God can't bless your steps if you aren't taking any, and "if you are going through hell, keep going" because there will be better days.
To be fair, there are parts of the book that felt like Steve promoting or selling himself or his radio show, tv shows, movies or books. He even says in the book he is always "closing" and at time I surely felt that he was selling and working hard to close the deal.
Jump by Steve Harvey was just okay. It's exactly what you would expect and have heard him discuss on his radio show, tv show and during interviews. In Jump, Mr. Harvey writes about his marriages, his children, the Miss Universe pagent, his Mentor Camp for boys, his homelessness, fatherhood, his successful night at the Appollo, flunking out of Kent State and his many, many jobs. Through all of his flaws, and admittedly he has many, he is still just a Christian man trying be the best servant and man of God.
While very similar to his previous book, I enjoyed learning more about what really happened on the Miss Universe Pageant and how Steve came back from such a media circus. I always appreciate his value for women and how he encourages men to treat them with respect; specially their daughters. With a heavy emphasis on faith, Steve Harvey proves that our circumstances do not define us... it's the drive, faith, and trust in God what will help us jump to the next level.
The book is written from a spontaneous speech that Steve Harvey gave the studio audience of Family Feud that was recorded and went viral. It shares Harvey's philosophy of life and details the ups and downs of his personal life and career. The title refers to letting go, not playing it safe and going after what you want in life. There's a heavy spiritual component involved. Good book to start a New Year with and get out of a rut.
I think (at times) there could have been more organization to the thoughts and concepts, and perhaps a little more depth to the chapter titles. Overall, very easy to read, full of encouraging examples, and exactly what I needed to read as my first book for 2018. Ironically, the sermon series at my church this month is "Finding your Fit". Must be a God thing :-) His plan is definitely greater than mine.
Steve Harvey once again knocks it out of the park with a book written to motivate and encourage. A man who's seen the back side of tough, Harvey knows that the only way to achieve your dreams is to take the first step.
I read Act Like a Success and thought it was extremely motivating. Jump takes it to the next level, and Harvey's easygoing style of writing makes this book a smooth journey. I read it in two hours and will re-read it because there's so much encouragement in 191 pages.
Jump is an exceptional book of honesty and realness. Steve is very open about his life experiences and how each one strengthened him and propelled him towards greater. He has shown that failure isn't the end and the future holds great things if you have faith and you not only step but you jump. He's a brilliant example, very inspiring and I mean that in terms of life, family, relationships, education and your career. It's definitely worth reading.
I truly love this book it has given me an incredible insight into the life of Steve Harvey and most importantly myself. It helped me to tap into my believe in God some more and also myself. Additionally, I did not know that Steve stuttered as a child as so did I, so it also brought me closer to me in a way as Steve is one of mentors.
This book was an easy read which gave me the insight of what can stop you from making that Jump in life. I gave a friend this book ad a present for their 60th birthday who was about to life changing leap which they did but it was not as easy a jump as they thought it would go. However, by the grace of God and me pushing them they will make it.
This was a great book! Steve Harvey is a great speaker and motivator. The books tells of failures and successes in his life and how he learned and grew as a result. I found the book to be very inspiring and have given thought to taking a number of "jumps" in my life. I would highly recommend this book especially on audio.
By far, the best book Harvey has released. He provides six principles that can help anyone take a leap of faith and achieve a life of abundance. Harvey draws on his unique personal and professional experiences to shape this book. Harvey rehashes a lot, but this book is just what I needed to read at the right time. I must take a leap and "jump" in life and businesses!
If you haven't watched Steve's Jump video, do so! While I can't say you've never heard this advice before, Steve delivers it in his own unique way. Knowing where he came from and overcoming his failures to where he is today was profoundly helpful. Do it. Jump.
This isn't for everyone. You have to be open and ready for this message. When you are ready, this contains encouragement to cheer you on the follow through. Mr. Harvey not only witnesses the process, but the divine God who gave the gift in the first place.
Very similar to "Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success". Easy read. Fast read. Very inspiring. However, if you have no clue what you are good at or what you want to do, you will feel the same way you did before you read this book. I did at least.
Jump head first into this great book. Steve drops some golden nuggets that will expand not only your business but your way of thinking. He embodies the concept family over everything. Enjoy and take the Jump!!
I really enjoyed this. It was a quick read that got right to the point. It really inspired me to gain confidence about my own jump I have been considering for several months.
This is the second book of Steve Harvey that I’ve read. And once again he did it. Wonderful anecdotes on the lessons of “jumping” and running after one’s dreams with the certainty that God will show the way. Fantastic book and quite humorous at times as well.
