I’m Sam, I’m 33 and I live in Wokingham! I have a degree in illustration and I spend most of my time drawing Otters whilst generally making a mess and thinking about why I still haven’t bought a kitten. I like putting inappropriate sweets in the freezer (Jelly tots) and my favourite film is Homeward bound. I wish I looked cool wearing headbands but I don’t. Oh and I’m rubbish at looking after house plants.
My favorite Otter turns up this time in a "Shared Reading" book in the "I Can Read!" series for 4-7 year olds. Otter Keeper and Otter travel to a zoo to learn about animals that live in the sea. On the way out, they stop by the gift shop and pick out a toy to take home...exactly the one I would have picked. I may have to check to see if I have Otter DNA.
Honestly, the picture books are more creative. These types of early reader books are purposely simplistic and sometimes repetitive so kids can start reading them on their own. They also tend to have simpler plot lines; I wouldn't say Hello, Sea Friends really has any conflict or narrative arc. However, this is a characteristic of the genre/reading level, so not something I'm going to fault the author for. (I am, after all, an adult reading these and not a child.) It's good for what it is, a cute story with wonderful artwork. I'll continue to read all of Otter's adventures with pleasure.
Synopsis:"Otter—the irrepressible picture book character sure to be adored by fans of Llama Llama—takes a trip to visit sea friends and meet all the animals that live in the ocean.
Otter: Hello, Sea Friends! is a My First I Can Read book, which means it’s perfect for shared reading with a child.
Read about more of Otter’s adventures in I Am Otter, Otter in Space, Otter Loves Halloween!, Otter: Oh No, Bath Time!, Otter: The Best Job Ever!, and Otter Goes to School."
My Review: We picked this book on a whim the other day. The illustrations are just too cute and you can't help but be drawn into the book. This is a great pre-level early reader. The sentences are brief, easy words and sight words. The story follows Otter and the Keeper on a trip to the aquarium and all the sea animals he finds there. It would be a great summer read to bring a little learning along with a trip to the local aquarium.
Well, it's getting so my husband just adds the latest Otter book to his Amazon order, since he knows that will make me happy. And he's right: this book is just as charming and as adorable as the previous books. Having been to several aquariums myself (and had many a small child trailing in my wake), Otter has mirrored exactly my experiences. Although it was a camera lens cap I dropped in the turtle enclosure, not Teddy in the penguin enclosure, mercifully, since I could get my (endlessly embarrassed) husband (we all know him) to retrieve it without the help of aquarium staff. (Otter is able to recover just fine, hooray!) As always, the illustrations are delightful, and since I've spent a bit of time looking at author Sam Garton's work, I can say that the fish are reminiscent of some of his early work (if I have to say something new with this review, I'm going for "art critic" voice). I do hope I'll be able to keep this original copy, since it's all nice and lovely, instead of having to hand it off to the next child I see because I have to pretend I'm all nice and benevolent when really I'm selfish and want to keep it all to myself.
Otter, Teddy, and Otter Keeper take a trip to the aquarium. The day is tons of fun, but Teddy gets a little too enthusiastic and ends up inside the penguin exhibit awaiting rescue, which results in reviewing the rules for enjoying the aquarium.
A great beginning reader title for sharing with preschools, daycares, and early elementary school groups who may be visiting an aquarium in the near future. Love this character, love this series, keep 'em coming!
Both sisters loved Otter's visit to the Aquarium as they themselves had a visit to the Aquarium just few days ago. They kept asking why the otter didn't see the Sting ray. They loved sting ray.
Otter goes to the aquarium and makes new friends. Its hysterical to me as an adult that he is eating a sandwich and chips for lunch and finds the penguins smelly fish gross! Silly otter : )
Everything your emerging reader might enjoy about going to the beach - lacking only the smell of the sea. Emphasis is on sea creatures, who might become friends.
The illustrations are so sweet and dreamy, even adult readers might find the sea turtle adorb.
Another highlight might be watching penguins eat their lunch, except for the smell.
ALTOGETHER
This is a wonderful kid-sized adventure, and -- as always with artist and author Sam Garton -- the illustrations are nothing less than superb.
FIVE STARS for an easy reading story that has a LOT of adventure... and story... and fun... sandwiched between the covers.
Otter is excited to be going to see sea creatures with Otter Keeper and Teddy. They see fish and seals, sea turtles and sharks (a bit scary!) After lunch, they go to see the penguins, though Teddy gets a little bit TOO close! To round out the day, they stop at the gift shop and take home a new friend.
Torn in rating this book as the art is SO cute and well done, however, I don't love the messages this book is sending to kids about visiting zoos and buying stuff at gift shops after.
This is a sweet book. Otter Keeper takes Teddy and I on a trip to visit the sea friends. Very good story. It is short enough for a kindergartner to read.
