This was one long arsed book and from those that I have read of the series so far it was my least favourite. I love how Ms. Beauman can take current events and truly make it in to a kick arse story. But the kick arse story didn’t help it along in any way whatsoever. 3 3 'barely, existing’ stars

Although saying that though (yes, I know that is a nice word for but) my eyes hurt from the last two books. I eye rolled a lot in this book. Too much for that matter. I don’t mind if there are moments of stupidity which is fine. Tough situation, nearly dying and all that and then you say I love my job, I love it. Then spending a week in Alaska you realise it was all bollocks you tell your beau what you want right that moment. He wants it but not just straight away and then you back off after you gave him your v card and say No worries, Collin. I’ll just get an insemination donor” Excuse me? You can’t just pick that up at the super market. But she is rich so I guess she can.

I was internally screaming with all the fucking Ly Ly’s I heard. I actually counted them altogether there were 119 in total her name was said over 900 times. It drove me up the bloody wall even now I could go apeshite on that. Although I did like this heroine more compared to some of the others as the others were all kamikaze. She just rubbed me the wrong way and I can’t pinpoint it. Believe me I wish I could.

But luckily I love the Hero and like with the other books it was no different, okay Ethan did my nut in but not as bad as the other females in the book. So he is off the hook.
Collin Michaels, get me a fan ladies and pronto, is the real star of this book. He is strong, sweet, totally bad arse and believe me you want him in your corner. Hey I want him in my corner just because I like to think that I can. His luck in relationships hasn’t been that great but that can all change and it did.

The first 40 % of the book was engaging, full of sweet moments and a build-up of suspense but after that for the next 30 % it just dragged majorly. I nearly fell asleep well after taking a break I actually did fall asleep. Not a good sign.

At the 70 % mark it picked up again and was once again engaging. I have to be honest though if I hadn’t received this book as a read to review copy I probably wouldn’t have been able to finish it.
Please note that this is my personal opinion and well if you don’t like it then tough luck.

Book received by author in exchange for an honest review.

Finding Lyla by Cate Beauman is the tenth book in the LA Bodyguard series and I have been lovin’ each and every one. It’s good to be back with the gang and watch as two characters find each other, adding to the Bodyguard family.

The men may be strong, but so are the women, each with their individual personalities that makes for a new storyline and romance that slowly develops, filled with difficulty. If it isn’t their own need to protect themselves, it is a bad guy trying to make their life hell.

Lyla struggled to enter the world, being delivered by Caesarean. When Cate Beauman described the delivery, her being tied down, I had flashbacks. My child was born in the ’70s and the times sure were different than they are now. I too was tied down, then gassed. Does not make for fond memories.

Her mother, Mina was the a prima ballerina in Russia, so when Lyla was born she was labeled as the Princess of Russia, expected to follow in her mother’s footsteps, which she did. She made a name for herself with her amazing talent and was now dancing for the Manhattan Ballet. Trouble arises when she returns to Russia during a turbulent and dangerous political climate. Her father is the US Ambassador to Russia, so she feels she has no choice.

Collin is a bodyguard with Ethan Cooke Security. When he is tasked with being Lyla’s bodyguard, he jumps at the chance. Just coming out of a bad relationship and a previous job, he doesn’t look forward to returning to an empty apartment.

I found myself laughing at their dialogue from the moment they met.

I immediately fell in love with the characters. They are beautiful, inside and out. I think you may find yourself enamored with them too.

WOW. The danger, intensity of the suspense, and sexual tension is off the charts. The political intrigue kept me on my toes and I’m glad Collin is well versed in survival. They will need it.

Lyla is naive in the ways of the world. She has devoted her life to ballet. She does have some wonderful friends, very little romantic experience, but ballet is her be all, end all.

Nail biting, edge of the seat, nonstop action that threatens lives across international lines. Brutal moments are tempered with sweet ones. Every time I think I am reaching the happy ever after, Cate Beauman delivers another blow.

Finding Lyla, even though I expected a LOT, delivered more than anticipated. That is why Cate Beauman is a master of her craft.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Finding Lyla by Cate Beauman.

I really wanted to like this one. The blurb really sold it for me. I one clicked and dove right in. Now, it might be because lately I've read a lot of insta-love books but this one had a really slow start. It took well into the 38% for anything romantic to happen between them. For a while I forgot that I was reading a romance because I saw zero chemistry between them.

I get that she was his charge and as a bodyguard there had to be some distance between them at first, but this started off so platonic that not even a hint of any romantic feelings peeked out. The pacing also was a bit off. In some instances the story speeds by like the scene with the bombing at the end of Lyla's performance, it was a lot to take in and I felt that we needed more details. It felt like a flash bomb, it left me feeling out of touch with the story, when I should have been emotionally invested because it was a horrific tragedy.

Then there's Lyla, sometimes I felt sorry for her, her childhood was lonely and it kind of follows her into adulthood. But then other times she came out of left field and I kept wondering what the heck she was thinking. The moment that most stood out for me was when she was pushing Collin away because her dance career is all she can ever have, only to turn around a few days later and decide to give up her career and plan a family as a single parent (through IVF) within six months. It just was so OTT and made her hard to relate too.

Collin for the most part I liked. I could have done without the constant comparisons that he ran between Lyla and his on-again off-again ex. I felt like that was just dropped in every now and again for drama's sake.

The story itself isn't bad, it just wasn't my style.

After reading a view two star reads, I was in a desperate need for a good read. And since I had a Cate Beauman book standing on my TBR, I knew this was the book I needed to read next since Cate’s books always make me feel better.

‘Finding Lyla’ definitely didn’t disappoint. This is already the tenth book in the Bodyguards of L.A. county series and I can tell you right now it’s one of my favorites. In this book we meet ballet dancer Lyla Markovik-Avery. Lyla is the daughter of ballet legend Mira Markovik who died giving birth to Lyla. As the daughter of a famous dancer and an US Ambassador there are certain expectations Lyla had to life up too. And this time is no different. Lyla has to travel to Russia, to visit her father and to dance her mother’s famous dance. But things aren’t easy in Russia, and Lyla’s life isn’t save. So Lyla gets assigned bodyguard Collin, who has to face his own demons and is blown away by Lyla’s spirit.

Lyla Markovik has to be one of my favorite characters in the Bodyguards of L.A. County series. I just loved her. I loved how strong Lyla was. How she wanted to take care of others, old neighbors, homeless man etc. And I loved getting a glimpse of her life as a ballet dancer. Something that is completely foreign to me. Lyla’s life was definitely fascinating to get to know.

Collin, was just as yummy as all the other bodyguards in the series. But he definitely had something extra sweet about him. He was handsome, kind and above all he wanted to see Lyla happy. I loved reading about Collin.

The romance part between Lyla and Collin was definitely my favorite part in this read. I loved reading about them, and how they slowly changed each other’s lives. There was definitely a lot of chemistry between these characters, and you could definitely feel it.
There were also some very thrilling and toe-curling moments in this book. Let’s just say that Collin’s bodyguard skills came in handy. And I just couldn’t put this book down until I knew how the story ended.

‘Finding Lyla’ is another great read. I loved it from the beginning till the very end. If you haven’t started reading this series yet.. I suggest you do ASAP! ;)

This was a very well written romantic suspense. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the Russian setting. However, it was necessary given the premise of the story. Lyla Markovik-Avery was a prima ballerina with the Manhattan Ballet. Her father was the American ambassador to Russia. Her mother, Mina Markovik, was also a prima ballerina and died giving birth to Lyla. When the book opens there's been some political unrest in Russia and Lyla's father wants her to postpone her visit home. He's concerned for her safety. Even though Lyla would love nothing better than to stay in New York, she has obligations she needs to fulfil. Known as the Princess of Russia in her homeland, there are certain expectations the people have of her that put her under tremendous pressure. Still, she's determined to see it through.

As a result, her father calls a friend in America and asks for his help. That friend just happens to be Collin Michael's father. Collin works as a bodyguard for Ethan Cooke Security. Arrangements are made for Collin to pose as Lyla's boyfriend during her trip to Russia. They don't want anyone to know she's secretly being protected. As Collin and Lyla get to know one another, they find they really like each other. Lyla speculates that they could easily become close friends. However, having to pretend they're an item isn't all that easy when they are constantly in the public eye and Collin is working overtime to sell their story to the press. Before long an attraction grows between them but they don't have time to really explore their feelings for one another because they end up in serious danger and running for their lives.

I loved Collin with his easy going attitude, his sense of humor, and the way he looked out for Lyla, meeting all her needs. Lyla was a bit more serious but given the pressure she was under I couldn't fault her for it. While it was clear Lyla loved her father, he always put other things before his daughter. Some of it had to do with Lyla being born on the day his wife died. I loved the way Collin went out of his way to make sure her birthday was special and vowed that he would always put her first on that day. There was plenty of action as they tried to get out of Russia, knowing the bad guys were after them. This was a very good addition to the series. Looking forward to what's next.

FIRST IMPRESSION:

Since I had already read 3 books from this series, the 'First Impression' was sort of non existent for this book. What I did expect, though, was a book mainly focusing on a troubled but powerful female protagonist and a knight in shining armor who both refuse to acknowledge the affection they feel for each other. Amidst high on adrenaline chases and near death moments. This book did not disappoint me in the least.

REVIEW:

The book starts with an emotional and touching chapter. Diplomat Avery has his wife admitted in the hospital. Markovik is a ballerina, Russia's Prima Ballerina. She gives birth to Lyla, and consequently dies in childbirth. The next chapter quickly charges 25 years ahead, with Lyla practicing hard in the US and being trained in Ballet. The thoroughly different scenes, set years and continents apart, held my interest. Lyla is a ballerina, a star, but she stays away from Russia. Born to a Russian mother and an American father, Lyla is goaded by a press interviewer to return to Russia and perform, amidst unrest and life threats. The short interview that perfectly captured the unrelenting doggedness of the media and the troubled life of celebrities offstage set the pace nicely.

But then the book traversed towards a 'race against time' format, with threats hanging over Lyla's head. In comes Collin from Ethan Cooke's (those who have read the previous books would know this man) security team. He pretends to be Lyla's boyfriend for their entire trip to Russia, acting as her bodyguard. He has a past of his own, and her troubled presence makes him forget to sit in repentance and remorse, keeping the adrenaline spiking. In close quarters with her, he realises that there is more to the fancy ballerina than her poised exterior. Camaraderie turns to friendship turns to something more than that. With the powerful forces from a country that wants them dead to seal information hot on their trail, they try to flee the country against mounting difficulties.

The short summary of the book intrigued me enough. What I liked about the book were the parts that highlighted the inner lives of glamorous people and how the relation between countries would affect ambassadors and envoys. But the strong heroine falling for her knight in shining armour protector invokes a strange sense of deja vu and by this time sounds like something I have read previously, by the same author. The story comes a full circle in some senses. Previously introduced characters make an appearance, bringing with them a sense of familiarity with the series and the writing. The ending that follows the same protocol as its predecessors makes it, at least in parts, predictable. But at least this has more action (not the steamy kind) than the ones preceding it.

Tragedies abound in this thrilling tale of love and loss. But ultimately all is as well as it could be. Cate Beauman does it again. Yet again.

WHAT I LIKED:

The concept and execution of this novel
The writing holds the readers' interest
Lyla as a character attracted the reader in me from her first appearance
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:

Sometimes the stories seem formulaic
Lyla's indecision at times becomes frustrating
For a good beginning and a fair ending, the book faltered in the middle
VERDICT:

Thrilling tale of yet another high profile chase - this time across borders

RATING: 3.75/5

The daughter of Russia’s favorite Prima Ballerina and an American Diplomat Lyla often finds herself caught between the expectations of others and what she wants for herself, but never never dares to even think about.

US/Russia relations are in the news on the constant and that makes great canvas for this story. Lyla is constantly being torn between making it alright for everyone else and keeping her own sanity. She allows herself to be talked into performing in Moscow, despite her father trying to convince her that it too dangerous. Enter Collin Michaels. At the request of Lyla’s father Collin will be traveling to Russia providing protection, undercover as her boyfriend. Being in such close quarters with her, he begins to realize that there is more to Lyla than meets the eye and while she will bend over backwards to take care of everyone else, she doesn’t give her care a second thought. His natural inclination to protect kicks in and he finds himself falling for her.

When terrorists strike, it becomes a race between Collin finding a way to get Lyla home before those who would use her for their own twisted get hold of her.

I whined in my last review for this series that there didn’t seem to be ‘quite’ enough action in the story. I certainly can’t say this about Finding Lyla. This story showcased the bodyguard in protection mode that has made this series so great from the beginning. From riots to foot chases to an icy showdown, Collin’s escape and evade background comes in handy in more ways than one. Along the way he and Lyla make some heat of their own as they learn that they are probably exactly what the other needs.

The end was sweet if a little quick. Obviously when Lyla sets her mind she moves full speed ahead. This story is completely focused on the would be lovers. Secondary characters, while still well written, don’t drive and enhance the story as much as in past books. It let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding in the moments when Lyla found herself, because like Collin I spent most of the book wondering why she didn’t see how others were always her focus and it wasn’t really fair. This story is dynamic, alternating between the whirlwind of celebrity and danger, and the idyllic of passion and friendship. It is terrifically balanced.

I have enjoyed each of the installments of this series I have read and I really need to get my hands on the rest

I really love this series and until now I liked, and in some cases loved, the books in The Bodyguards of L.A. County series. That is why it saddens me to say I was not a big fan of this one. I just didn't connect to either of the main characters and found that their romance wasn't very believable. It felt a little forced to be honest.

Lyla Markovik is daughter of US Ambassador and a famous ballet dancer Mira Markovik who has died giving birth to Lyla. Lyla has followed in Mira's footsteps and became famous ballet dancer. She is to travel to Russia to perform her mother's dance, but due to troubles her father had hired Collin to accompany her.

While the story idea was good, I felt like the characters were all over the place. They didn't seem to know what they want. Collin kisses Lyla but then when his ex-girlfriend freaks out over seeing them on the TV and calls him, he tells her that Lyla means nothing to him, that she is just a client. Lyla, on the other hand, drills the point that ballet is her life and won't let anything get in a way of that throughout the majority of the story line, then turns and decides she wants to have a baby through in-vitro-fertilization. Wait, what?! Where did that come from? Both characters came across a bit wishy-washy, jumping from one thing to the next without really thinking things through.

Although this one was a bit disappointing, I cannot wait to read the next installment in the series.

Lyla is the daughter of Russia's prima ballerina and an American Diplomat. Her mother died shortly after she was born and she was always touted as "Russia's princess" as a successor to her mother the Queen of ballet. US-Russia relations are tense and Lyla is constantly being used as a pawn for everyone else's agenda and never thinks about what she truly wants. Lyla's father hires Collin Michaels to act as Lyla's boyfriend to protect her and he ends up falling for her. When terrorists strike, Collin must find a way to keep Lyla safe and out of their reach. This book seemed to wrap up a little quickly but it could be that I was just so wrapped up in the story!

Russian ballerina, Mira Markovik was married to the US Ambassador to Russia, Jonathan Avery. Mira was a famous prima ballerina who died giving birth to Lyla. We jump 25 years later where Lyla was now a prima ballerina with the Manhattan Ballet. Because of whom her parents were many expectations were put upon Layla. One of which was to visit Russia. Because of the political unrest at the time, her father was concerned with her safety and wanted her to postpone her trip. Lyla felt the people of Russia expected her to go and she didn’t want to disappoint them so she was determined to go.

Lyla’s father was concerned with her safety so he hired a bodyguard for her. That man was Collin Michael who worked for Ethan Cooke Security. He posed as Lyla’s boyfriend so that they could be together all the time, without drawing suspicion.

Collin and Lyla really liked each other and enjoyed spending time together. But it got harder and harder for them to make everyone believe their story. Especially when Lyla is in danger and a country wants her dead. It gets exciting when they try to get out of the country and Collin has to use some of his bodyguard training to keep them safe.

This was a well-written romance with an unusual plot and setting. The terrorists chasing after a ballerina in Russia was exciting. Lyla was a beautiful, accomplished dancer who always did what was expected of her, without consideration for her own safety. I did find some of the descriptions of ballet to be a bit tedious and not necessary to the story at times. But they did help to tell us how disciplined Lyla was with her dancing. That was her life. I really liked Collin. He was great at “playing his part” as Lyla’s boyfriend. And he was so considerate of her. He was just an all around nice guy. I liked that they both saw the good in each other, becoming friends before having deeper feelings.

Collin and Lyla

This book is an exciting and emotional read with an American/Russian ballet dancer and a bodyguard pretending to be her boyfriend. Lyla Markovik-Avery is also known as Russia’s Princess after her mother known as The Queen of Dance died giving birth to her. Her life is full of intense practice and physio and pushing her body past its limit. Lyla’s father, the US Ambassador to Russia hires Collin Michael’s to pose as her boyfriend so he can protect her on her trip to a troubled Russia. The two hit it of great and quickly become the media’s Princess and Prince Charm but tensions are rising as terrorist bomb innocents and threaten more violence. Collin has his hands full as Lyla try’s to pulls away from him and danger increases. We have action, suspense, the beautiful sites of Russia, a nasty dance partner, an equally nasty and devious reporter, a mostly absent father who wants his daughter happy and safe, a woman who has done what was expected of her and a man who wants her to be whoever she wants to be.

Excellent

Ok here I go. This might be short because I don’t want to give anything away. Heart pounding, pulse racing suspense.
Lyla is a famous ballerina. She’s beautiful, sweet, and generous. Her father is the Ambassador for Russia. She was born in Russia but her mother, who was a famous ballerina, died in childbirth. She always goes after the new year but her father wants her to cancel due to bombings nearby. She tells a reporter that she’s going and performing her mother’s dance.
Collin is former Army but works for a security company now. He’s big, handsome, and sweet. Collin just gets out of a relationship and is not ready for another. He agrees to be her bodyguard while she’s in Russia. He can’t believe how beautiful she is. As they go to Russia, they get closer. But the longer they stay, the more dangerous it becomes. Collin will do anything to protect the woman he loves.

Loved it

I've read 10 out of 11 in the series and everyone was my favorite! Lol but, this one is very special. I hope everyone enjoys this series as much as I have.
I suggest you Google Pacific Palisades California if you're not from here to get a real feel for the setting by the ocean as it plays a big part in the series, as home base.
The sex is very graphic and I prefer to skip those passages , just saying lo!
What I really loved is the characters are a part of each story, sometimes a lot, some a little but its always fun to see them included from one story to the next -Enjoy!

The author brings in today’s real issues of what dancers go through every day including the environment that someone is always wanted your place. She shows that men have a tough time with breakups and that politics and revenge are very alive in this world. She has an amazing ability to bring all these emotions together to write a nook that keeps you reading page after page to see love is what makes this all worth it.

Good story

This is the first I've read in this series and I liked it. Start with a Russian-American ballerina, throw in diplomats, bodyguards, rebels and intrigue and you have a story that goes from New York to Moscow with a few places inbetween.
It's well written and I loved the main character Lila.
Excellent stuff.

I really enjoyed it but the ending let it down a lot
it just ends with her going back to the Ritters place after being kidnapped and then its six weeks later she and Collin are in LA and she announces she is pregnant it was the huge gear shift that made me think my book missed chapters for a minute there

More romance than suspense

This was my first book to read in this series but it is a stand alone. I loved the two characters, they were normal and relatable. Collin had a stupid moment but there wasn’t very much drama or angst.

Interesting characters in international setting

What starts out as a story of a ballerina known internationally becomes a thriller involving Russian intrigue- kind of like current events in 2018. A suspenseful read with a happy ending!
