An historical account of the struggles of a man to free himself and his family from human bondage, written by his grandson. This book is based on the life story of Garret Buster, grandfather of the author. It is an account of his struggles to free himself and his family from the bonds of slavery. Garret Buster lived from 1809 until 1903, though this book covers the years from 1820-1865 in the area near Danville, Kentucky.
One of 13 children, the author taught at Gist Settlement, near New Vienna, Ohio after graduating from Martinsville, Ohio HS in 1900. Later he taught in the Kansas City public schools. After his retirement he became private secretary to a member of the Kansas legislature.
His grandfather escaped from slavery in the mid-1800s .
Found mention of this book while searching through historical newspapers from my hometown. The book review and an interview with the author can be found here, a copy of the clipping from the Wilmington (Ohio) News-Journal from 22 Nov 1955. I was hoping there would be more about the latter years of Garret Buster's life, in which he lived in Ohio, but the book covers mostly 1820-1865, the time when he lived in Kentucky. The newspaper review compares this book with the much more widely known, Uncle Tom's Cabin.
