Perhaps secretly most fathers want to appear Daddy Cool to their children - I certainly do (whether or not I achieve my aim, I cannot say!) This book brings together a variety of thoughts about fathers and fatherhood but unlike other books of quotations this one does not rely on phrases from the great and the good, it is entirely compiled from the thoughts of ordinary people in the street.
And they do not let us down as the thoughts are sometimes amusing, sometimes very profound, sometimes full of pathos, sometimes powerful, always supportive and encouraging and more often than not full of love for daddy. They are accompanied by expertly chosen, evocative, gently amusing and superbly taken animal photographs, each of which reflects admirably the accompanying phrase. There are elephants, seals, polar bears, zebras, buffalo, monkeys, giraffes and many more, all of which have a child/daddy element about them.
Not surprisingly the quotations have references to money being provided, the perennial taxi service needed and the often unrecognised wisdom of daddy! And they are all worth reading, even if many do not necessarily apply to the reader in question.
One of my favourites is the two giraffes, the father figure whose head is way out of the picture as the extremely tall youngster looks on and the phrase is 'A dad is someone you look up to no matter how tall you are.' And one that was particularly appropriate in our household is the resting pride of lions who are accompanied by 'Children really brighten up a household. They never turn the lights off!' And probably the most apt is the two polar bears with the child stating, 'I'm just as lucky as I can be for the world's coolest dad belongs to me.'
It is indeed an enjoyable book both textually and visually. Good-bye for now, Daddy Cool!
