Diary of an Adorable Fat Girl

Rate this book
Mary Brown is funny, gorgeous and bonkers. She's also about six stone overweight. When she realises she can't cross her legs, has trouble bending over to tie her shoelaces without wheezing like an elderly chain-smoker, and discovers that even her hands and feet look fat, it's time to take action. But what action? She's tried every diet under the sun.
This six-book series is the hysterical story of what happens when Mary joins 'Fat Club' where she meets a cast of funny characters and one particular man who catches her eye.
The story is laugh-out-loud funny and will resonate with anyone who has dieted, tried to keep up with any sort of exercise programme or spent 10 minutes in a changing room trying to extricate herself from a way too-small garment that she ambitiously tried on and is now completely stuck in.

Bernice Bloom is the big, new name in comedy writing...this is the first installment of her great new series of laugh-out-loud mini books.

Here are some of my reviews:

"I adored the various storylines, loved the quirky and captivating characters, and was beguiled by Ms. Bloom's colorful and highly amusing writing style. I am hopelessly addicted. More Fat Girl, please!"

"The book was just a delight to read. Every time I picked the book up I could guarantee that it was going to make me smile. The full-length novel was funny, this one was hilarious, and heart-breaking at the same time. I was completely and utterly hooked to the pages and didn't want the book to end."

"The last thing on earth I need is another addiction, but I fear I have acquired a new one for the cunningly amusing author Bernice Bloom and her wily Adorable Fat Girl series. Mary Brown is an adorable yet outrageous Queen-Sized trouble-magnet and party animal who manages to embroil herself in the oddest of quandaries."

"I can't recommend this book enough.
This series is fast becoming my favourite and I can't wait to see what's in-store next for Mary. I urge you to pick up these books, you won't be disappointed!"

"Cruise with an Adorable Fat Girl is just THE most heartwarming, funny and emotional read. It's great to have a more real life heroin

5☆ Fantastic Read!

Diary of an Adorable Fat Girl is the first book within a short series of standalone books.

I was absolutely thrilled when I see Diary of an Adorable Fat Girl. Being a plus size girl myself I can totally relate to Mary's struggles.

I absolutely Applaud Bernice for creating plus sized characters. It's a refreshing change to see the plus size society being represented in a truthful and real way!

I can totally relate to trying all the dieting fads, diets pills that left me with gal stones etc..

I do agree with Liz though before you can concentrate on losing weight you have to crack into the emotional side the reason behind the addiction.

Lol I honestly felt like signing up to fat club too.

I loved Mary she is alot stronger than she thinks. Although she has a very low self esteem.
I loved her lil inner thoughts they made me giggle as I could totally hear myself saying the same kind of thing.
She is also hiding a secret which will unlock her past therefore finding the reason she put on weight.

I also loved Ted's Character. He has a larger than life personality with a big heart & a lil soft spot for Mary.
His story was so upsetting. Playing rugby on a high level, he got crushed in a scrum that ended up breaking his neck.. which in turn led to him putting on weight.

I loved the fact the Fat Club had many different characters. All representing a different form of plus size. For example you have the Model who is size 16 not particularly fat but actually size 16 is becoming more normal.
The members ended up bonding and supporting each other.

Although this at times was a lil emotional. I felt it was a heart felt portrayel at the struggles life throws at you.
All the characters were very likeable and relatable.
It had humour, romance, friendship, drama, emotional yet fun.

Thank you so so much Bernice for making plus size acceptable and for creating Mary and her friends.
The perfect book for the Year of the Woman!!
To show that no matter what shape, size, or sex you are.... You Are Beautiful inside and out and you can achieve things!

I am so looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

Highly recommend this light hearted fun Rom Com!

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Favorite Quotes:

Sorry, it might sound like a horrible thing to say, but when I was sweet and pretty and slim, men opened doors. Now they take one look at me bulldozing my way down the street and think ‘well that one can clearly open the door herself - blimey she might take the whole thing off its hinges’… The day you can’t squeeze into your size 16 jeans is the day you learn to open doors for yourself.

I wanted the fish and chips like I’ve never wanted anything in my life before, but I reined myself in. I could easily nick some of Ted’s chips instead, everyone knows that the calories don’t count if they are contained in food nicked from someone else’s plate.

“This is the stupidest thing ever to happen to me in my whole, entire life.” I just shrugged. It wasn't the stupidest thing to have happened to me that week, so I wasn't in a position to comment.

Most beauticians think they’re scientists… And I was absolutely sure that every time they covered my face in something like mashed up beetle's’ legs, sea moss and elephant’s semen that I’d emerge looking like Cameron Diaz. That was the thing about going to the beauticians - it was all about the hope.

Honestly, bringing out weighing scales at a Fat Club was like bringing out a hand grenade or a venomous snake. I noticed that Janice had physically recoiled from the sight of it.

My Review:

Originally written as three separate novella type installments for a six-part series, I giggle-snorted my way through this delightfully amusing yet insightfully written tale of a dramatic, Queen-Sized, Calamity Jane type named Mary. Mary was a trouble-magnet of the most unusual variety, yet she meant well, most of the time. Mary had acquired a weight problem following a vaguely referenced traumatic event in her teens, and while she had attempted and failed many diets, she was frustrated with herself and driven to join her first group-oriented approach, a group she called “Fat Club.” She made new friends with a few of the members and a special friend indeed with Ted, a sweet man whose kind heart was as large as his appetite. I enjoyed the premise, adored the quirky characters, and was highly entertained and charmed by Ms. Bloom’s observantly insightful, colorfully descriptive, and humorous writing style. Much to my merriment, Mary repeatedly found herself in the most unusual and comical of predicaments. The ending of this book felt rather abrupt until I realized the story had not concluded but had reached a satisfactory for-now stopping point in the middle of the series, as three more installments remained. And between giggles, I fell upon a new addition for my Brit vocabulary list with “cack-handed” – which according to Urban Dictionary means “an awkward or inept way of doing something; originally meaning left-handed, stemming from cultures that use their right hand to eat and their left hand to wipe their behind.” I am eagerly looking forward to more cack-handed adventures as I already have Cruise with an Adorable Fat Girl waiting for me on my Kindle. And, my apologies to any southpaws who may accidentally stumble upon this silly little review.

As a member of slimming world I really empathize with Mary in this book and liked following along as she tries to battle her weight. Although an enjoyable read I did find it felt more like a short story. It also annoys me slightly that for Mary to be adorable she is written as a ditzy blonde at times. However this is a funny book, and I really liked the love story weaved in as well. One thing that does really irk me about this book and its sequels is that they end on cliff hangers which are never really explained or touched upon again. Still a good little read though!

You really need to read this fabulously funny mini book.  It is the first in a series of six mini-books and a full length novel.  Highly Recommended reading if you need a good giggle!

It is an easy read - best enjoyed with a cuppa (but no biscuit!)

The author has brilliantly described the characters and you really feel their personalities coming through even in such a short story.  The way the characters build a friendship and at the same time you are taken into their own troubles just makes an opening for a great series... I can't wait. I am off to order the rest of the collection!

I so could relate to the girl. Also glad there was a really good happy ending, her neighbour was such a horrible piece of work, but glad Ted in her group was there.

This is the first book in the Adorable Fat Girl series and we get to meet the heroine of the series Mary and her fellow Fat Club members! This is a brilliant introduction to the series and I found myself laughing out loud at what goes on in places in the book - I love Mary, she's a brilliant character and looking forward to reading about more of her exploits in the rest of the series! 4 stars from me and very highly recommended and you do need to read the books order or you will get spoilers as they run on one after the other - they are definitely worth it!

For anyone who has ever fought with weight gain (and there more of us out there than you would think!) this is a definite must read.

Mary is a good-looking, glamorous young woman with an amazing personality and a matching sense of humour. She has, however, rock bottom self-esteem. Knowing she is overweight affects every part of her life and she joins a local group - referred to as 'Fat Club' by the half-dozen members - hoping that this will be the one to sort out her eating issues. Not a slimming club, more of a self help affair with the guidance of Liz, the lady who gathers them all together each week.

There are a lot of home truths in this novel, but all wrapped up with love and surrounded by fun - I suspect the author has herself struggled with a few extra pounds. It is very depressing to continually be lectured to and if you have that experience then this is the book to buy. It's so funny and entertaining, and I defy anyone not to feel better about their own weight gain after reading this.

I'm very happy this this is the first in a series, and hope to slip the remaining books into my reading list, so I can laugh and feel so good all over again!

My thanks to Rachel's Random Resources for providing my copy via NetGalley. This is my honest, original and unbiased review.

It doesn’t matter what size you are if you feel uncomfortable and hate your body

Everyone wanting to lose weight has a trigger to make you do something about it; mine … this last time round? It was buying a size 18 pair of elasticated waist jeggings that still gave me a muffin top but I refused to buy a size 20. For Mary… it was crossing her legs properly…

I really identified with Mary. I’ve been where she is, the binge eating to find comfort, the binge eating when you’re happy… just eating far too much… and then that nervousness of walking into a room of strangers and then having to talk about why you couldn’t control your eating. Bloom really got that bang on the nose!

Liz’s enthusiasm reminds me of my own Slimming World consultant. The eagerness to support and understand why. I’ve been to different slimming groups and the person stood at the front makes a difference as to whether you succeed along with the support of your fellow group members and Mary really has the right support around her.

You can’t deny that you’re a food addict.

Bloom has created a short entertaining start to a series I know I’ll be coming back to again and again. At 76 pages, I swept through my first meeting with Mary and her friend in just over an hour. A great little realistic escape from the goings on around me.

For every woman who has ever been on a diet (that’s all of us then!) and anyone who has suffered low self esteem for whatever reason- this is a must read. Mary is overweight (as you might gather from the title). Her confidence is at an all time low so she joins an overeating group- soon known as “fat club”. There she meets like minded people who understand her predicament and support each other through thick and thin ( well almost!). Although this is a light hearted read there are some serious issues addresses such as the aforementioned low self esteem and those comforts that we all turn to for one reason or another. Mary has a secret that she has kept for many years which is where her issues started. She doesn’t want to talk about it as that will remind her of it and that she can’t bear to do. She soon realises that inside is just as important as outside. Bernice has a wonderful way with words and incorporates much into a few pages that makes you think about maybe your own issues or of those you see around you. A wonderful pick you up, feel good read.

Although Diary of an Adorable Fat Girl dealt with fairly common issues in terms of dealing with being overweight, self-worth and facing the perceptions of others, it approached it in a rather unique manner.

While I really loved reading about an overweight heroine, I was also annoyed by Mary’s actions numerous times throughout the story. I don’t want to give much away, but just once I would love to read about a confident, overweight woman who deals with self-esteem issues that are completely unrelated to conforming to society’s norms of beauty.

The redeeming feature in the stories, was that Bloom’s characters dealt with some truly difficult moments, and they were sympathetic and realistic in how they did so. Mary’s reasons for emotional over-eating were completely relatable, and I appreciated how difficult it was for her to enter into a committed relationship with Ted without sabotaging it.

There were truly bizarre moments of humour throughout, interspersed with sincere and sweet interactions between the characters. I also loved that Mary’s weight-loss was not the focus of the story, but was just the foundation for the friendships that created the true story.

Move aside Bridget Jones, Mary Brown is in town!

The first book in the series of ‘An Adorable Fat Girl’ introduces the reader to Mary, who is overweight, loves food and wine but one day decided to go to Fat Club. Yes folks, Fat Club!!

This particular Fat Club (that is far from her work so her boss doesn’t see her go to such a thing) runs over six weeks and aims to help the attendees to focus on the psychology behind why they overeat. It’s a great concept yet whilst everyone else is sharing their trails and tribulations, Mary hints something happened in her childhood, avoiding the topic when questioned further.

In this short book, we follow Mary and her two new friends, Ted and Janice throughout the six week course, as she realises who her friends are, as well as the value of herself when it comes to love interests. Stand aside gorgeous Dave, Tarzan is here!

This book was recommended to me by my mum (thank you mum!!) and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would love a short book with some honesty and funny times.

Saying this book is relatable is an understatement. As a plus size girl who struggles with her weight every day this book was the perfect way of getting through it. This book was light-hearted and so funny that I couldn't help but laugh out loud at a lot of parts. Mary is a perfect character and she was amazing. I couldn't help falling in love with her.

It even makes me want to start my own Fat Club!

Bernice did a great job with all the characters. They all fit together in the best way, and it made the story that much more enjoyable. I also loved the love story that Bernice through it just made the book that much better. If you love easy, fun, adorable, short reads then this book is definitely for you.

Diary of an Adorable Fat Girl is a wonderful short story that you can read in an evening. But don't worry there is a whole series!
As someone who is currently doing slimming world and slowly but surely succeeding, this book I found was very uplifting, talking about the highs and lows of dieting and the horrendous stigma around being 'fat' and judging people on that. It also looks at the deeper issues of weight gain. How trauma , life events and changes can impact our relationship with food.
For a book based around such serious issues you would think it was dark and brooding but it is anything but. In fact it is good humoured, light hearted and I am very much looking forward to reading and following the rest of the series. I will also be recommending to my fellow 'fat club' members!
