This is the first book I have read by this Author and I would strongly recommend it if you like to know some of the history between the Boers, the British and the church at this time between 1850 to 1856.This is one man’s struggle to understand what is going on around him,I was very interested by the life of Andrew Murray as a Christian minister in South Africa at that time. I was gifted a copy for an honest review.

As I read the opening paragraphs of the Prologue my interest is spiked as I enter the world of Andrew Murray through the eyes of Johan. Each sentence is full of information, crafted with emotion that is taking me to the place of walking up the drive and seeing Dr Murray’s house for the first time – I can’t wait to get inside and meet the real man. The Author Olea Nel is generous with her knowledge, giving maps of South Africa and photographs via her website to give a well rounded understanding his life’s story.

The interview with Dr Murray comes alive and I felt I was there alongside Johan as he stepped into Dr Murray’s memoirs. I love this clever writing as it makes this piece of history comes alive and there is a glimpse into the world of a Pastor in the mid 1800s. Very little has changed when trying to move forward in God’s direction, against alternative advice by family members, but each time it is about submitting to the Lord. Alongside this the story explains some of the political atmosphere surrounding Dr Murray’s mission field.

The reader journeys with Dr Murray to South Africa, understanding more about the Boers than contained in the history books. I loved the chapters where the human story unfolds; Dr Murray’s sharing his conflicting emotions as he relates his disappointment of losing the closeness of a sister and housekeeper as she marries another colleague. He is humbled (eventually) and learning great lessons in life, of turning to Christ with petitions, in faith, for personal relationships.

We journey on with Dr Murray as he arrives in London and preaches in Surrey Chapel and meets his future wife Emma Rutherfoord. Later both would meet again in South Africa. Amongst plans for Grey College, planning sermons and Synod meetings he had learn the art of communicating with those he loved. I felt both his love and miscommunications in his blunders to propose to Emma. A great orator but when it came to close 1-2-1 he (like so many of us) struggled from going beyond his own needs and think of another’s. In this case it was German poetry!

Take a step back 136 years into lessons from the 1880s, a beautiful reminder of a time once lived, yet Olea Nel helps to resonate this learning, history and knowledge with today’s reader in 2016.

This was a good book! I am going to have to get the first book to see how Mr. Murray's life started out. The author does a great job taking his notes and creating a story out of them. Very enjoyable to read and flows well. If you are looking for something that has a good pace and religious in nature, please give this book a try! I don't think you will be disappointed!
