Strong Steps

Rate this book
Cerebral Palsy was a bitch, but Ed Myers had never let it get him down.

The crutches, the stuttering, the physical instability … obstacles, yes … but never the sum of who he was or what he could accomplish.

Then the nightmares began, full of helplessness and frustration, as he witnessed his son, Daniel, being abducted by a mysterious man with a snake tattoo that ran the length of one arm… and Ed unable to protect or intervene. As the dreams slowly merged with reality and the culprit was revealed as a demon from Hell itself, Ed knew that steps must be taken to save his only son and send the fiend called John Legion back to the pit from which he had emerged.

Strong steps …

Ronald Kelly was born and raised in the hills and hollows of Middle Tennessee. He became interested in horror as a child, watching the local "Creature Feature" on Saturday nights and "The Big Show"---a Nashville-based TV show that presented every old monster movie ever made ---in the afternoons after school. In high school, his interest turned to horror literature and he read such writers as Poe, Lovecraft, Matheson, and King. He originally had dreams of becoming a comic book artist and created many of his own superheroes. But during his junior year, the writing bug bit him and he focused his attention on penning short stories and full-length novels. To date, he has had thirteen novels and twelve short fiction collections published. In 2021, his extreme horror collection, THE ESSENTIAL SICK STUFF, won a Splatterpunk Award for Best Collection.

He currently lives in Brush Creek, Tennessee with his wife, young'uns, and an ultra-hyper Jack Russel named Toby.

This is the story about Ed Myers, a man who has gone through life with physical challenges, and the love he has for his only son.

Ed is having horrible nightmares which feature the Devil, named Legion in this story, entering into his life and dreams to abduct his son. Ed and his wife have separated and he has few places to turn.

He seeks the help of his priest in order to try and help save his sons soul. Ed has some decisions to make.

Ronald Kelly tells this story of anguish and fear quite well about the lengths a father will go in order to protect those he loves.

This is copy V if 32 copies signed and numbered by Ronald Kelly.

An interesting tale of a man's strong and determined outlook, despite the limitations of cerebral palsy.

Ed Meyers begins having dreams of a sinister "feeling" man each night, shaking his confidence and optimism to the core. The truth of the matter is even worse than Ed imagined.......

A simple tale, simply told. It doesn't stray to far from a familiar tale and Kelly has written better stories, but enjoyable for what it is.

I'm the real Ed Myers -- one of the main characters -- in Ron Kelly's "Strong Steps" novella. My son Daniel and Father White are also very real. Father White read this story. And, liked it so much he asked where he could get more information on Ron Kelly.
I thought John Legion is a great villain. And, I really enjoyed confrontation scene in the cave at West Ship Island. In reality -- Daniel and I have never been there. I also liked how the story line evolved from beginning to the end. It's a very easy read. The icy cross walk nightmare only happened once. I traced the genesis of that nightmare to the Monday before Thanksgiving in 1985 when members of the Iowa State women's cross country team died in fiery plane crash -- after finishing second in the NCAA meet that day in Milwaukee. I was also scared to death that day attending classes at ISU. Ames had some freezing rain the previous night which made walking extremely difficult. I was afraid of slipping in one of the crosswalks on central campus and being hit by a car or one of the Cy-Ride buses.

I will start off this review by stating that I am totally biased about this story (in the most positive way imaginable). Ed Myers is the protagonist in Strong Steps, and must fight to save his son from abduction by one of Hell's demons. Ed Myers is also a real person. I know this because he is my brother.

My brother was born with Cerebral Palsy and has struggled his whole life to do all the things the rest of us take for granted. Like all I have known with physical and/or mental challenges, he has never been bitter about this and is one of the most optimistic and appreciative people I know.

Ed has been a fan of horror novels his whole life, and Ronald Kelly was kind enough to write a horror story featuring Ed and his son. All of our extended family loves it, obviously. Thank you Ron, for giving Ed something in this life that most of us will never have...his own horror story! And thank you Russell Dickerson for the wonderful cover art.
