Richard Marcinko is the author of the Rogue Warrior thrillers and is a living, breathing hero honored with the silver star and four bronze stars for valor, along with two Navy Commendation medals and other honors. After serving in Vietnam, he went on to start and command SEAL Team 6, the Navy's anti-terrorist group, and Red Cell, a high-level anti-terrorist unit. Marcinko keeps his hand in the field as the president of a private international security company and now lives in Warrington, Virginia.
The Rogue Warrior is on a HAHO mission to sink a Chinese ship and during the mission discovers that the Chinese have top secret American stuff. Investigating, he finds that his old nemesis Pinky has been giving intel to a talking head type, who has been passing it along to the head of Chinese intelligence. This gets the Rogue's dander up.
Lots of shooting and excitement. I believe this was probably the most popular Men's Adventure series of the 1990's.
Like all 5 previous fiction books, this Marcinko novel hits a home run. Fun, funny, high action, and excitement. Toss in some anger and revenge elements and this will keep you turning pages until the grand finale. Enjoy.
A fun read for lovers of military fiction, SEAL units, and traditional men's adventure novels. Marcinko (RIP) and Weisman put together a tale that rings true (not to mention a bit scary) with what is happening with China today, 25 years after it was originally published.
In other books in the series, Marcinko's breaking of the fourth wall gets old fast, but it worked better with this entry. The wall-breaking here was entertaining and pointed out a lot of stuff that someone with no military background wouldn't understand with far less of the "see how badly I hurt myself and get back up" stuff.
When it comes to the action, the co-authors were firing on all cylinders. The firefights make you feel like ducking behind your sofa and the physical combat hurt to read it. No problems here at all!
The villains and traitors of the tale were dispatched by bullets and sheer brawn and the recurring nemesis, Pinky Prescott, looks to be riding off into the sunset while impaled on Marcinko's middle finger. After running into a few of these clowns myself during a tour at the Pentagon, it gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling usually provided by a several shots of a good, single malt whisky.
A must read for SEAL fans, military fiction, and men's adventure stories.

Marcinko's Seal Crew has a mission, a high altitude jump over the South China Sea to find a Chinese freighter carrying weapons and sink it without a trace. They're successful in their mission, but now there's a new problem. The ship was carrying tactical nukes made in the U.S. There's a traitor selling US equipment to be used against the US. It's Dick's job to track down the traitor and destroy the operation.
This is a typical military thriller, lots of James Bond gear, action scenes, firefights, fist fights, etc. If that's what you're into, it's a good read.
This was the first Rogue Warrior novel I ever read ad the one that made me a Marcinko fan in the first place, back in 1999, a few months before I shipped off to Air Force (or "Air Farce" as Demo Dick calls it), and re-reading it 17 years later, with the benefit of military, law enforcement, and overseas security contracting experience under my belt, it holds a sentimental value for me. As someone who majored in International Relations in college with an emphasis in East Asia, I appreciate the Japanese and Chinese plot elements, and as a USAF veteran, it's good to see Dick portray some facet of the Air Force in a positive light for once, that being USAF Special Operations Command (in the form of cool cat AFSOC pilot Lt. Col. Arch Kielly).
But there are a few things I gotta nitpick. I realize Demo Dick is a firm believer in Murphy's Law, i.e. "Anything that can go wrong, will," but come on, man, over and over and over again in every book, some piece of equipment has to fail (whether the chute cords tangling up or the ultra-reliable HK MP5 jamming or misfiring) and Dick repeatedly breaks his nose and smashes his shin??
And speaking myself as a former USAF Security Forces troop, something else I gotta nitpick (from p. 291 of the Nook edition): Hey Dickie-boy, unlike the MPs and Shore Patrols in the sister services, we "Air Farce" sky cops sure as hell *do* carry magazines in the butts of our M9 pistols; hell, we ever carry a round in the chamber!
Seal Force Alpha is written by Richard Marcinko, the famous Commanding Officer of SEAL Team Six. It belongs to the Rogue Warrior series, which starts with Marcinko's autobiography, followed by a number of fictional sequels, including this novel. Although the characters (except Marcinko himself) and events depicted in the book are fictional, it's obviously written from author's first-hand experience.
The novel is narrated in the first person, using rowdy language, full of military jargon and humor. It makes you feel as if you were sitting next to Marcinko in a pub, drinking beer and listening to him telling his war stories. This effect is even more pronounced in the audio edition, which is read by Marcinko himself. This form of narration, in conjunction with the fact that the author clearly knows what he's writing about, makes this book very authentic.
Seal Force Alpha does not offer much in terms of the writing quality. The plot is a simple story, in which a covert military operation is a universal remedy for every political problem of the USA. The characters are defined only to the extent required tell the story.
The book will probably not appeal to an average reader, but it is a must-read for anyone interested in the subject of black ops.
Once again, Richard Marcinko has written an action-filled book that kept me not just on the edge of my seat, but laughing at times. Marcinko and his merry band of Seals are sent on a mission to seize and destroy a Chinese freighter suspected of carrying all kinds of stolen materials to aid and abet the Chinese in their clandestine missions around the world. After a tense fight, Marcinko and his Fellow Seals destroy the ship and find the treasure trove of equipment that was described. But when he and his troops return, they run into doublespeak and political barriers. After a lot of dogging, Marcinko finds an even deeper problem and takes it on in typical Rogue Warrior style.
Captain Marcinko-san provides another action filled novel from the alpha (befinning) to the omega (end). I absolutely loved this book and will recommend it to everyone.
