A dual timeline book, split between 1705 and the present day, the second Cousins of the Dove book follows two sets of sisters with similar problems and issues. Both storylines are intriguing and will keep readers interested throughout. Celeste is quite naive and somewhat blind to what is fairly obvious to the reader, but it doesn't really take away from the enjoyment of the tale. This installment of the series furthers the exploration of the murder the cousins witnessed in their childhood, yet it also fully stands alone with its own plot. The story is a wonderful melding of romance, family drama, history and mystery.
In 1705, Celeste Talbot is betrothed to an English soldier who goes to the New World, and soon after she takes a ship and follows him. In order to pay her way, she becomes an indentured servant, knowing that he will purchase her contract when she arrives. Her sister Berta is also on the ship, secretly following Celeste. Berta takes ill, and with the help of fellow passenger Spencer, Celeste finally arrives in the colonies to find that the situation is not what she had planned. In the present day, Maddee Talbot agrees to take in her younger sister Nicole while she is recovering from an accident. Nicole has had a long history of drug addiction and lying, and Maddee's carefully ordered world is knocked off kilter as she tries balancing everything that needs to be done. Can the sisters reform a friendship and trust that has been in tatters for years?

Parallel stories of relationships between sisters and their family's connection over a three-century time frame takes the plot forward concurrently. Both pairs of sisters have difficult relationships. Considering their differences healing may never come.

The characters depicted throughout this book are well developed and believable. The descriptive elements regarding the locale are strong and palpable in both settings. Preposterous incidents are heartbreaking and inconceivable, but the reality of those situations is authentic.

I was swept away by both settings and the difficult relationships between both sets of sisters. This is a page turner, one that I won't soon forget. Although historic fiction, my opinion is that this could be labeled reality fiction. My Sister's Prayer boldly portrays honesty in difficult family relationships. I highly recommend it!

This book begins in the present time with Maddies’ sister ready to come live with her, a drug addict who was terribly injured in a car accident. Just as we go about dealing with all that is required we learn about some letters written in the early 1700’s by a Talbot woman, and before we know it we are there with Celeste and her sister Berta.
Wait a minute I was absorbed in Maddie and Nicole’s story and now I’m in the 1700’s, and enjoying this part of the story when we are back in the present, you are going to see that the two stories of the same family have a lot in common. I got so I didn’t want to leave either era but then I loved where I was, whether the past or present.
I was enjoying this book so much that I didn’t want it to end, and wanting it to go on and on, a really great read!
I received this book through Harvest House Publishers and was not required to give a positive review.

From the first word to the end of the story, I could not stop reading. The authors tell a tale that encompasses present day and time in the 1700's. The descriptions of being aboard the sailing ship, landing on new ground and the awful conditions of that time are brought to life with the emotions of the characters. The feelings of the characters in present day story line are real and heartfelt. I enjoyed this book so much that I plan to read it again.

I haven't read the first book of this series, but that didn't detract from the beauty of My Sister's Prayer. In both books, there are characters who are direct descendents of the historical characters who live similar lives.

In this review, I am detouring from my usual style to do a "my favorites" kind of thing.

My favorite historical character surprised me. It's not Celeste, but Sary--she saw many things during her indenture that gave her such wisdom beyond her years. While she technically wasn't an indentured servant but a slave, her work was still the same. She was a cook for an inn on the James River, and while French was her first language, she spoke and understood English fluently. She chose to hide that fact so that she could force her "owner" to bring in a translator to be her friend.

My favorite modern character is Maddee, which is not surprising. Her faith has been derailed for a bit, but because of her sister, Nicole's, accident and subsequent recovery at Maddee's place, she's slowly finding it again. She's mixed up a bit as to the kind of man she really wants and she often can't see what's right in front of her.

My favorite plot device in this book is the parallel lives the modern sisters lived to the historical sisters. While Celeste's sister, Berta, did not have an accident, she was extremely ill and required Celeste's care. Maddee's sister, Nicole, needed Maddee's care while recovering from a car accident.

One thing I would change in this book is to leave out the murder of the man in the cabin. While it allowed a few extra characters and a bit of cloak and dagger action, it really didn't add to the plot lines except as a distraction. I feel the book would have been a whole story without that particular device.

This is an exceptional novel with bright, clean writing that leads to a satisfying conclusion for the reader. Five Stars, Two Thumbs Up, and a friend who speaks your language. Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould make a killer author team and I need to read more of their works.

This is the second book in the Cousins of the Dove Series and follows up book one with the modern day characters and jumping to the ancestors in 1704. Maybe a little slower that the first book but still very much worth the read. Mindy Starnes Clark and Leslie Gould have woven history and modern day into mystery and romance that you are sure to enjoy. I highly recommend this series. Once again these two madie have written a wonderful book! I enjoyed it thourouly and learned a few things along the line.
I think the Colonial days were a very interesting time in our young nation. People knew how to be a family then and they worked and sometimes prayed especially at the dinner table.
Nowadays it is every person for themselves. I grieve for the olden days gone by. But thanks to these 2 ladies they have brought it back again
I recommend this book. It is very fullfilling for your soul. It was mine.

My Sister's Prayer #2 Cousins of the Dove series***** by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould

...1704...Virginia...Celeste Talbot and her sister Berta find themselves in a precarious situation due to their own choices. Celeste, who is normally dependable and sensible, follows her heart and makes unwise choices that leads her on a far different journey than she had envisioned. She soon learns some hard lessons when she arrives in the American Colonies as an indentured servant and the promises made to her are not kept. She is more courageous and stronger than she thought. She loves her sister in spite of what she had done and sacrifices something very dear to her and her family in order to help Berta. I like how she befriended Sary, the slave who cooked for the inn and even protected her when things became dangerous—putting herself in danger. I really liked Sary and felt for the trials she had faced as a slave and wanted her to find a safe, caring place to live and work—without being a slave—which was unlikely.

Berta is gravely ill and harbors a secret from her sister and those trying to help her. I found her to be selfish and untruthful, causing more problems than she imagined. Question is, will she learn anything from her ordeal or continue on as she has in the past? However, by the end of the book, I liked the changes in her. There are other characters that I really liked Celeste and Berta's brother, the inn keeper and especially Spenser—a kind, gentle and godly man.

The ship crossing to America was a difficult one. The descriptions of the ship and the shocking conditions aboard gives the reader a glimpse of the horrors the men, women and children faced as they made their way to America. It is a miracle anyone survived the trip.

...Present day...Virginia...Madeline—Maddie Talbot likes everything neat, in order and perfect—including herself. I like the progress she makes in being less perfect and more spontaneous. Now she is caring for her sister, Nicole, who is recovering from a terrible accident and addictions. I could see how hard it was for Maddie to be tough and strong for Nicole even when it brought tears and heartaches.

Nicole is a character that I wasn't sure I would like but as the story developed I began to care for her and even like her. I hoped she would not fall back into old habits—habits that were a result of the trauma from the cabin in the first book. All four cousins dealt with the trauma in different ways in order to cope and go on but it hit Nicole the hardest I think. But there is danger lurking and the sisters are not aware of it at first. Tying the two time-periods together are the old letters that Celeste and Berta wrote—the first of the Talbot family to come to America—so many years ago which helped bring Maddie and Nicole closer as they read them.

My Sister's Prayer is the second in the Cousins of the Dove series, but can be read as a stand-alone book. The story continues and follows the thread of the mystery in the first book, My Brother's Crown and the Talbot family. The story-line goes back and forth from Virginia of 1704 to present day and back again, but is easy to follow the time-lines as they are clearly marked. There are some similarities in the sisters stories in both time-periods as the sisters face difficult challenges, struggles and consequences of their choices which impact others as well. I love the historical elements in this story (my favorite part of the story) and the way the authors tied the two time-periods together bringing the past to the present in this family's lives. There are clues to the mystery from the first book that is yet to be solved. The characters take the reader on a journey of adventure, betrayal, joy, slavery and indentured servants, guilt, healing, forgiveness, and love. I love the theme of strong family, faith, prayer and God's grace.

My Sister’s Prayer by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould is the second book in Cousins of the Dove series. Madeline “Maddee” Talbot is twenty-seven years old and has a busy life (and it’s about to get busier). Her sister, Nicole gets into a car accident (because of drugs) and needs around the clock care (broke both her legs). She is staying with their Nana (who has a big house and money for caregivers), but Nicole feels smothered. Nicole wants to stay with Maddee (she is whining). Maddee finally agrees to let her stay with her with a few conditions (daily AA meetings are a part of it). Maddee is a little nervous because Nicole was a drug addict, and Maddee is not sure how she will be able to care for Nicole (she has a full-time job). Nicole has doctor appointments, AA meetings, and physical therapy. The two sisters were close when they were little but grew apart after Nicole started her downward spiral with drugs. It all goes back to the dead body that they found in a cabin when they were little (along with their cousins Rene and Danielle). By the time the girls returned with their parents, the body had vanished. No one believed their story. The case is still unsolved. But there is new evidence (thanks to the cousins) and Detective Ortiz is looking into the case. Can solving this case help heal Nicole and the breach between the two sisters? While the two are staying together, Nana gives them some family letters and journals to read. She wants them to go through the papers together.

Celeste Talbot has always done what she has been told to do. But she fell in love with Lt. Jonathan Gray who has been recently assigned to the New World (he had to leave without her). Celeste is running away to be with him. What Celeste does not expect is her sister, Berta to follow her. Celeste does not have enough money for the passage, and signs on as an indentured servant (for four years) to pay for her voyage. Celeste knows Jonathan will buy her contract when they arrive in Williamsburg. Celeste discovers Berta on the ship. Berta ends up very ill and needs constant care. When The Royal Mary arrives in the New World, they land in Norfolk (instead of Williamsburg). The captain sells their contracts and the two girls end up in different cities. Celeste has to find a way to get in touch with Jonathan. Celeste promised Berta she would rescue her as soon as possible. Celeste is in for a big dose of reality. Will she be able to reunite with Berta? Can she find Jonathan and get out of her contract? Join these two sets of sisters on their journey of discovery in My Sister’s Prayer.

My Sister’s Prayer goes back and forth from present day to the past to tell the story. It is told in the first person (which I really dislike, but after a while I do not notice it). While this is the second book in the series, it can be read alone. The book has very good writing (as usual for these two great authors) and the story draws in the reader. It deals with forgiveness, adversity, the impetuousness of youth, and trusting that God has a plan for your life. You can see the parallels between the two sets of sisters as you read the novel. I give My Sister’s Prayer 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould did a very good job at capturing the historical time period. Their writing is very descriptive. I can envision what they are describing. Past events are not wrapped up in My Sister’s Prayer. We will have to await the next novel to find out more about the man that died in the cabin. I will definitely be reading more books by these two authors.

This was my favorite of the three books in the series, and I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe it's because the historical thread is set in Williamsburg, Virginia, a place close to my heart, or because I could identify some with the control-freak tendencies of the present-day main character, Maddee. I just loved this second book in the Cousins of the Dove series. (Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book from the publisher. Review reflects my honest opinion.)

In both the historical and contemporary thread, the women are thrown off by their plans for how life should go. This is a theme that is dear to my heart, and often leads to something so much better than imagined.

The present day storyline unravels more of the decades-old mystery and continues to build on the relationships between the Talbot cousins, two of whom are sisters and who play the main roles in this book. Two sisters also star in the historical storyline.

I continue to be impressed by the authors' abilities to write from the first-person for a different Talbot cousin in each present-day storyline as well as by their research for the historical storyline. If I have any complaint, it's that sometimes it seems like the storylines are wrapped up too quickly in an almost unbelievable way. But that is a minor downside.

My Sister's Prayer is second in the Cousins of the Dove series by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould. Like the first book in the series this book has the dual timeline storyline, one current and one historical. The historical one is the next generation of Talbots and the first of the Talbots to come to the United States. They are two Talbot sister, Celeste Talbot and her younger sister Berta. Against her parent's wishes Celeste falls in love with Jonathon. She defies her parents and runs off and boards a ship indenturing herself in exchange for passage. Jonathon is supposed to redeem her once she reaches the new world. While on the ship she realizes her sister is also on the ship and supposedly kidnapped against her will. Berta did not fare well on the ship. At one point they thought she would not make it. Celeste did everything she could to take care of Berta. Things to not go as planned in the new world and the sisters face many hardships. well on the trip across. She fell ill and I will not go into details as I do not want to spoil this excellent story but I can tell you that the historical one keep me reading. I wanted to know if both survived the terrible ordeal they had to go through. There are many twists and turns in the historical one.

The modern one picks up where the first one left off. There is still the mystery of what the four girls witnessed almost 20 years ago. In this story more pieces of the puzzle are put into place but the mystery is still not solved. I'm looking forward to reading the last book in the series to find out what happened. This story also includes two sisters who were two of the four girls. Madeline Talbot had taken on the task of looking after her sister Nicole who is recovering from a serious car accident. She also needs to make sure that Nicole stays in recovery from her addiction to drugs. This part of the story kept me reading. I wanted to find out if Nicole would stay off the drugs. Also, there is a good looking doctor that Maddie is interested in. I wanted to keep reading to see how that would pan out.

In both stories there were two sisters and one sister taking care of the other. In both stories there was the sister who was deceitful but there was the bond that existed between the sisters in both stories.

Thanks to Netgalley and Harvest House publishers for allowing me to review an e-copy of this novel. This book is due to be released September 1, 2016. I look forward to reading the third novel in the series.

Adventure, mystery, and romance come together to make another intriguing story in the Cousins of the Dove series. Continuing on with the dual timeline as in book one, the story follows two sets of sisters--one in the present, and one in 1704 Virginia--related by ancestry and personal struggles. Sisters Nicole and Maddee (Talbot family cousins) have a lot to deal with as Nicole recovers from injuries sustained in a car wreck, and the cold case murder investigation (from book one) hits a deadend. Their grandmother gifts them with a set of old letters from another set of sisters--Celeste and Berta Talbot, the first in their family to come to America--hoping to fill them in on family history, and give them insight into their own difficulties.

Steady paced action, building suspense and conflict, especially in Celeste's life, made this a book that was hard to put down. The story line really grabbed me, with more than a few "oh no!" moments. Her character grew and matured throughout the tale, especially in her faith, as she learned to trust God more fully, forgive the ones who wronged her, and unselfishly put her sister's needs first. Spenser was a great character too, faithfully helping the sisters in their many difficulties, confronting the injustices put upon them, an all around humble hero. The links to the family history from book one were interesting too, with the Huguenot migration and settlement in Colonial America. Nicole and Maddee's story superimposed on their ancestor's made some interesting parallels, and pulled it all together nicely. Looking forward to more clues being revealed in the cold case murder in the next book too.

Highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a clean read with a little history, mystery and romance. Okay as a stand alone, but better if read following My Brother's Crown. 4.5 stars

My Sister's Prayer is the second book in the Cousins of the Dove Series. I enjoyed the first novel and found this novel a great continuation. Maddee is the cousin who is the focus in the modern day portion of the book. She prepares to take in her sister Nicole who is recovering from a disastrous auto accident and her drug addiction. Nicole has been living with their wealthy grandmother but has begged to move in with Maddee. Maddee lays down boundaries and rules for Nicole to abide by in order to stay in her tiny apartment. As the sister's are learning to live with each other under uncomfortable circumstances, their grandmother hands them letters written by two sisters from their ancestral line in the early 1700's. Will these letters bring the harmony and forgiveness needed? What lessons can they learn from two women struggling to find their way in the New World?

I appreciated the reality the authors wrote of the world of addiction through Nicole's life and situation. Having experienced that in my home I could relate to the characters and the drama that occurred in the novel.

This is absolutely, positively an excellent book. I couldn't stop reading it. The first book was also excellent and it just keeps getting better as the series goes on. My Sister’s Prayer is the second book in the Cousins of the Dove series (My Brother’s Crown is the first book). The books can be read as a stand-alone or in order as a series - I just found out in an email by the author Mindy Starns Clark. But, if I were you, I would start with the first book and read them in order to better understand who the characters are, where they come from and to be able to follow the story between the two time periods. There will be two more books of the series coming out in 2017 and 2018. I don't know if I can wait that long!! I am really enjoying this series and you will too once you start reading them. I highly recommend My Sister’s Prayer (and My Brother’s Crown).

My Sister's Prayer
Cousins of the Dove #2
By Mindy Starns Clark
and Leslie Gould

The Talbot family saga continues with this My Sister's Prayer - the story is again a back and forth telling of the present day and 1704. Catherine and Pierre Talbot have prospered in the England since their escape from France. But when their daughter Celeste makes a hasty decision to leave all she knows behind for the promise of marriage in the colonies she sets in motion a chain of events that she never anticipated.

Celeste knows she has found the man she is to marry in Lieutenant Jonathan Gray. But when Jonathan is sent to a post in the American colonies Celeste agrees to follow him on the next ship. Indenturing herself Celeste holds Jonathan's promise close. But when she makes a most unexpected discovery - her younger sister Berta has somehow been forced on board - she fears whether or not Jonathan will be able to redeem them both.

In present day Virginia Maddee and Nicole Talbot are caught up in the past as they read through the letters of Celeste Talbot to her family that she left behind. As Celeste's story unfolds parallels are made to their own lives and relations as sisters. Nana has a special reason for wanting her granddaughters to read these letters now. But learning about their past isn't all that they are dealing with as Nicole with the help of Maddee and Nana recovers from an accident that nearly cost her her life.

As two sets of Talbot sisters deal with their unique situations and the choices that have brought them each to key moments in their lives they must learn to turn to God and the faith that has sustained them in the past. And the mystery that the modern Talbot cousins were involved with in the first book is continued in this one as the investigation continues. But can they truly discover the truth of what was hidden or will they continue to be haunted by their past?

This is the second book in the Cousins of the Dove trilogy and it is an interesting look into the past and how indentured servants came to the this New World. It would be interesting to know how many arrived on false promises.

I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Women of Fearless Devotion Virginia, 1705 Celeste Talbot is usually such a sensible young woman--until she falls for an English soldier reassigned to the Colonies. Leaving her Huguenot family behind, she sets sail for America, only to learn that her younger sister Berta has been kidnapped and forced on board the very same ship. Whom can Celeste trust? The dashing soldier? Or the vigilant carpenter who remains by their side in the perilous New World? Virginia, present day Madeline "Maddee" Talbot has her hands full when she agrees to take in her younger sister Nicole following a serious car accident.

The young women grew apart when Nicole fell into drug addiction, and Maddee prays this will be the start of a better life for her sister. But as they investigate a trauma from their childhood, Maddee must keep a diligent eye on Nicole--and the shadowy figure watching them from afar. From the Christy Award-winning team of Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould, My Sister's Prayer tells the epic tale of two women compelled to protect their sisters, confront their fears, and navigate the muddy waters of betrayal to find true love.

My Review:

This story is a unique one, it is written from two different points of view as well as two different points in time. It is a little too hard to follow at first but once I caught on it was easier to understand and the stories of the two sets of sisters and the troubles and battles that they have faced. It was a compelling story and it was hard to put the book down.

The authors have made a masterpiece and I can see where it took the two of them to write such an interesting story because it involves so many characters and how they are intertwined. A great story told in a fascinating way makes the story more interesting and fun. A really good book that was indeed hard to put down.

2 sets of sisters, 300 years apart...

I ran into the writing partnership of Mindy Starns Clark & Leslie Gould several years ago while perusing the library bookshelves for Christian fiction. I read all of them I could get my hands on, written both together and individually. I was hooked. I had read, and enjoyed, their Amish fiction so I was quite excited to find out that they would be doing a Huguenot series together. I have Huguenot ancestors that fled persecution in France for the religious freedom in America. So, as you can imagine, the Cousins Of The Dove series is a little extra special in my eyes.

As with book 1 in the series, My Sister's Prayer is a split-time story with two different women 300 years apart facing similar situations. Both are strong, both have always been the 'good sister' and tend toward self-righteousness, both have sisters that have made poor decisions, both will go to any lengths to help their sisters, and both must navigate their way through murky to find real love.
At times I became frustrated with Celeste, especially, and wanted to shake some sense into her. Couldn't she see that she was only being used? Didn't she understand who really had her best interests at heart? Can you tell that became emotionally involved with this story?

Mindy Starns Clark & Leslie Gould are wonderful authors and it clearly shows in the seamless rendering of these two stories intertwined in a single novel. Whether you love contemporary or historical novels this book will have you covered. My Sister's Prayer is a wonderful story and a MUST read for Christian fiction fans.

The second in the cousins of the Dove Series, this book goes back and forth in time between modern Maddie, the cousin of Renee from book 1, and Celeste Talbot, a young Huguenot woman from 1704 who comes to Williamsburg, Virginia. And although this book does stand alone, I think the modern story follows better if you’ve read the previous one.

I loved this book!!! I enjoyed reading about old Williamsburg and also the mystery from the modern time – and also how the sisters Maddie and Nicole go and visit Williamsburg seeing the same buildings as their ancestor but over 300 years later! The authors bring so much into the books – not only the history I know about such as slavery but also how the practice of indentured servants worked, but also contemporary issues such as addictions and more.

So, again, I really loved this book – history and contemporary, mystery and romance – and highly recommend it!!!

I loved the first book in this series, "My Brother's Crown", and couldn't wait to dive into the second book. Expecting this book to continue the tale from the first book was my mistake. The Huguenots are barely mentioned in this book but occupy the majority of the first book. This book takes place between Europe and Virginia and dwells more on people tricked into a life of slavery. The present day story that accompanies the 1704 in Virginia narrative deals with a drug addicted sister of the Talbot family recovering from the trauma of a car accident. The trauma that occurred to the sisters that is central to the first book is barely mentioned in this book. I found this book disappointing and realize the publishers probably wanted a three part series to bring in more income, so perhaps things will get resolved in book number 3, I hope.

A book set in two time frames, present and early 1700s. Two present day sisters are going through a rough time, and their grandmother thinks they would like to know about two of their ancestors who had some similarities. It helped the present day young women see some things about themselves. None of the young women in either time frame have an easy time of it. I found it hard to put down, especially wanting to know what happened to the girls from 1704. It kept me engaged till the end.

After reading My Brother's Crown I was excited to read the next in the series. In fact, I waited a bit and read some other things so I would have the 2nd to look forward to. What a disappointment! I couldn't wait to finish it so I could be done with it. The writing was weak and I have always loved Mindy Starns Clark's writing. There were so many lame lines like after she finds someone in her house she comments, "I was so shocked." Talking about stating the obvious! Things like that throughout really got on my nerves. And, something seriously bad happened to Celeste every few hours. I just wanted to scream at her to stop making such ridiculously bad decisions. I really enjoyed learning about the Huegenots in the first one, but this had very little historical interest. All in all, I'm bummed about the series and I just can't decide whether to try the 3rd one or not.

This is a centuries-spanning novel, told from the points of view of both a modern woman, and a woman from early colonial America. As with the first book in the series (My Brother's Crown), I found the historical story more compelling than the modern tale, but the gap was smaller - perhaps because the stories focused more on the relationships between sisters, and less on the romance. At any rate, both stories in this novel had relatable, interesting characters, believable emotional depth, and compelling plots. The historical detail was well-done, and I appreciated the departure from typical colonial plots and the foray into issues affecting immigrant women of the period, especially those who lacked resources or protection. I look forward to the final installment.

This book trades back and forth between Virginia in 1204 and Virginia in the present time. CelesteTalbot (1702) and Maddee Talbot (present day) have obstacles to overcome and mysteries to solve. I loved how the two stories wove around each other to answer questions the reader has. My Sister's prayer is every bit as good as My Brother's Crown. I highly recommend this book. It can be read independently of the first book the in Cousins of the Dove series. I received a free copy of this book by winning a contest.

I get so absorbed in both the present day story and the 1700's story that when it switches I am equally disappointed to leave behind the one I've been reading and full of anticipation to find out what is happening in the other.

The only part that was a bit of a drag was how Celeste made up stories about what other people were thinking and feeling and absolutely believed that they were true. She was overly clueless at the end. Maddie's assumptions was also a bit annoying but slightly more understandable and not as overly done.

A great book!! I usually am not a fan of the second book in a given series ... but I thought this one was excellent. It helps when each book in a series is told from a different character's perspective, as this series was. Love, love, love.

I love the way Mindy Clark weaves the story of the ancestors into the story of the present. This was a pleasure to read. I have the third one reserved at the library! Looking forward to it.
