All It Takes Is One Night
to Plunge the World into Darkness

Life in Abney, Texas, is predictable and safe—until the night a massive solar flare wipes out all modern technology.

Shelby Sparks, novelist and single mom, had one goal: to provide for her diabetic son. In the wake of this global disaster, her mission hasn't changed. Only now, medication is a priceless commodity and the future resembles an apocalyptic nightmare.

Max Berkman and Shelby were once sweethearts, but he lost his chance at claiming her love years ago. When the abrupt loss of power ushers him into a leadership role, he rises to the occasion. But his highest priority—to keep Shelby and her son safe—could prove to be the biggest challenge of all.

As the brilliant northern lights give way to deep shadows, Max and Shelby's faith will be tested like never before. Only one rule remains: Find a way to survive.

I have so many thoughts about this book I'm having trouble deciding which one to express first :) When I first heard about this book and realized that one of my fave authors had switched genres, I absolutely knew I had to get a copy. Chapman's writing is just THAT good and Deep Shadows became one of my most anticipated reads of the year!!

And of course, I love that cover!

I was NOT disappointed and I even had the silly notion that I could read the first few chapters and go to bed when starting this book, DIDN'T happen....I was falling asleep but I read the first 40 pages before being able to put the book away. Chapman went to a whole new level in writing this book and it pulled me in from the start. I've read dystopian/apocalyptic books before (Life As We Knew It), but the difference with Chapman is that she gives a realistic situation with hope and you REALLY get to love the characters whether you agree with them or not.

Another aspect of this book that I was really impressed with, even though this book is told from three points of view, Chapman includes the situation from a national perspective and we're able to see how different cities in Texas respond to this emergency. Usually in stories, you're only limited to the main character and their immediate surroundings.

Shelby and her three best friends, Max, Patrick and Bianca are out hiking one evening when they come across a bright anomaly in the sky. Shelby's friends are admiring the view, but Shelby knows IMMEDIATELY that something is VERY wrong and all she wants is to get to her son to make sure he's all right. The very first thing they witness are planes crashing, hear a train explosion and notice that cell phones no longer work. Shelby is exactly right and things go from bad to worse very fast!

I like Shelby and agree with how she responds in most situations, however, she also annoyed me in her panic moments and how much she worries. Then again, I'm not a parent and have no idea how I would've handled things in her shoes. The ONLY thing that matters to her is keeping her son safe and having enough insulin available for him.

Max and Patrick are both heroes to me from the start. The way they protect Shelby, Bianca, and Carter (Shelby's son) was inspiring and amazing. They put others before themselves and push themselves to help people in need, but they also do whatever it takes to protect their loved ones.

**Favorite character: Mayor Nadine Perkins, SHE is the person you want in charge during an emergency. Wishing she was the real deal because we could use more leaders like her in real life.
"She stretched her neck to the left and then right, trying to relieve the tension in her shoulders. Shelby was suddenly glad that this woman was in charge. She wouldn't panic, and she wouldn't allow anyone to run over her with their opinions."
**LEAST liked character: the winner IS.....Eugene Stone!!! The author does a stand up job writing this man, he was horrific and every time his name comes up in the story, I'm bracing myself. The guy is TROUBLE from the onset of this disaster and he makes normal villains look harmless in his ambition to literally rule the world. *please tell me he does not survive the series*

The first priorities they decide on as a town is power, communication, and transportation.

Church is also involved in the story. I really like Pastor Tony and how he leads his congregation while the situation only gets worse. "I only ask that you remember: He is good, and His love will last all of our days."

This book definitely makes you think, but it's not a sad story like I thought it would be. Yes, the characters have to find a way to survive in UNTHINKABLE situations and people do die (there are murders, one near heart attack, explosions, fires, shootings, and one battle between the townspeople and their attackers) and yes this type of emergency shows the worst of humanity in certain characters, but it also shows the best of humanity as the people band together to help each other.

ONE thing I had the hardest time with is when to help people and when to be on your guard. It would be a huge challenge to know people are in trouble or suffering and you have to check on your loved ones first or get them to safety before considering strangers. However, when you're facing a disaster like this one, your way of thinking has to change in order to survive. This was an intense story, but it was done with hope, faith and realism. I was truly amazed by the details the author considers in creating this story. "The American dream, which had become something they all presumed they would attain. Now life would become a matter of endurance--and only the toughest, the fittest, and the smartest would survive."

I'm so thrilled Chapman switched genres to write this story and even though there is sadness (towards the end, there was one tragedy that gripped my heart), there is also humor, faith, friendship and one small town in Texas who will stand together to make survival possible! I'm a sensitive reader, but I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy dystopian stories. Chapman's writing style is very unique and you won't be disappointed! Book includes discussion questions, emergency preparation lists, how to grow a victory garden, and how to perform CPR.

*I want to thank the author for the review copy provided. I was not required to write a positive review. The thoughts and comments are my own.*

I really enjoyed this book and the characters. Vannetta draws you in with a great plot and loveable characters.
When the aurora hits everything in the world changings. No power, riots, fires...you name it. Shelby knew from the moment she saw the aurora things were going to go bad. This book takes you on a journey in a small town with Shelby, her son carter and her childhood sweetheart max. Reading this book you realize the small things that we use daily and take for granted.
I hoped to read more about Gabe and Lenora from the Remnant Novella in this book. Maybe they will pop up and the next book.

Deep Shadows was such an interesting story. Set in a small town in Texas, life quickly changed from normal to disastrous early on in the book. The major disastrous event and people’s reaction to it felt uncannily realistic and plausible.

I really liked the main characters in Deep Shadows and felt so invested in their lives. Shelby was quite the momma bear when it came to her son’s health. I enjoyed watching her learn to let Carter be the man that he was becoming. Max added great direction and thought to the story, as well as wonderful heart. He really worked to protect those he cared for.

The sense of desperation in this novel was tempered with growing unease about what was going on in the world outside of Abney and even the dangers that lurked just beyond the borders of this town. There were many twists and events that I did not see coming. It made for a very exciting story.

Deep Shadows caught me and held on from the first page till the last, and even days later I found myself thinking back to the people and setting, wondering what will be next for them and how they will survive!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Deep Shadows is a book that is going to make you think, you will become the mother of a boy with an illness that requires constant medication to keep him alive. Is this Armageddon, or pretty close to it, but life as everyone has always known it will cease to exist.
What has happened is a solar flare has wiped out all of modern technology, even the Northern Lights appear as far south as Texas. Shelby Sparks has been raising her son on her own, since her husband died, and earned a living writing romance novels, and had researched this very happening. She is with her lifelong friend Max when they see the Northern Lights, and of course Max looks out for her, and they head home, yes his truck works, it is an older non-computerized model.
We get to witness what life will probably be like if such a catastrophe were to happen, martial law happens, and it seems no one is like they used to be. There are fires, and explosions, needless death, and everyday fights for survival, and should they stay in their town, or leave and go to where they might survive. Shelby wants to stay, and so does her son, he has a new love interest, but life isn’t fair and decisions are made for them.
This is a book you won’t be able to put down, and after the last page is turned, you won’t soon forget. There are more answers to come and more to this story, but we have to wait a bit for more.
I received this book through Harvest House and the Author, and was not required to give a positive review.

Deep Shadows by Vanetta Chapman
Locale: Small town Texas
Timeframe: Current day, maybe future
Genre: Not sure...Science fiction? Maybe, but not really. Drama?..Yeeaaah...
Romance? Not really...more like attraction avoidance.
Futuristic-doomsday-survival fiction? Is that a genre? Okay, we'll go with that.

Three main characters.
Shelby, mom, fiction writer, widow, on her own but has 3 amazing friends.
Carter, Shelby's 17 year old son, diabetic.
Max, next door neighbor Shelby grew up with.

Story: Sorry...serious spoiler ahead...

So the book is about relationships, banding together, and survival. It's about the good side and the evil side of humanity when a disaster happens.

I seriously need to read more reviews before I invest this kind of time reading a book that is only part-one of a three-part story. Although Ms. Chapman is a wonderful writer, and I was riveted throughout this book, truly, it would have been a 5-star, but for the cliff-hanger. I don't want to HAVE to buy 3 books to get one complete story. But the first book in the series? Great!

What would you do if everything that required electricity ceased to function? Deep Shadows takes an interesting shot at what life might look like if a catastrophic event created such a scenario. Basic needs become urgent, and scared people become desperate. What would you do?

More than anything, Deep Shadows made me think -- and continue thinking long after I turned the final page. With very real, everyday characters, I found myself wondering how my own friends and neighbors would respond to such a situation. How would my own life be impacted by a complete loss of electricity?

Vannetta Chapman is a wonderful storyteller, pulling her readers right into the middle of the action. That may mean you see, hear, and smell a world that is so altered from your own, you might find it a bit shocking.

Unfortunately, since this is only the first book in a new series, the story was not resolved by the end of the book. While Deep Shadows ends well, there is definitely more to the story. Meaning I now have to wait for the next book!! (If you don't like to wait in the middle of a series with a continuing story line, you'll want to hold on until this series is finished. In the meantime, I'll try to be patient for the next one...)

Whether you jump in now or wait to read the entire series at once, I challenge you to read this series and put your own thinking to the test!

I really loved this book. It is an intriguing novel. I love the idea of a story showing how the world be in trouble if all modern technology was wiped out.
Just imagine your newer cars wouldn’t start, no trucks would be coming in to restock the shelves in the stores. The gas pumps wouldn’t work because the electricity pushed the gas up to the pumps. The same with the water system.
What if this happened and you or your family had a medical problem. You wouldn’t be able to get your medicines, or the care you need.
Those are just some of the problems in this novel. So Shelby, her son, Which has a medical problem and there friend Max, plus other numerous friends find ways to get around all of these problems. Some of the people will work together, but there are a few who don’t care how they get the things they need, by stealing or murdering. Anything goes.
This is a marvelous novel and I love it. Can’t wait until book 2 is out. So many things need answers in this story. Really loved it and will highly recommend it. A book you need to read in 2016!

When your world has turned upside down, will you turn to God or leave Him out of the equation? That's the one question I pondered as I read Ms. Chapman's dystopian read, Deep Shadows.
The crew of Abney, Texas had to figure that out from the moment they spotted an aurora borealis. I admit, I'd probably be too awe struck before the ramifications of what I was seeing hit. But Shelby knows exactly what it meant and nothing good would come of it.

Ms. Chapman explores the what-if world, wiping out all forms of technology in the fictional storyline. I found myself stopping mid read to evaluate my life. Would I react in some of the same ways as the citizens in Deep Shadows behave? Am I so used to my everyday comforts that when tragedy strikes, God is an afterthought?

This was a very different book that I never really could get into! It was about a massive solar flare that literally stopped everything, electricity etc! It told us about the struggles the people went through but never really told us why it all happened! Somehow I was hoping to find out at the end what had really happened and why, but no that didn't happen. It just left us thinking that they were going to live that way the rest of their lives! Not really ending he way I had hoped!

This book was a little slow paced at times...it took me a while to get totally caught up in it, but it did keep my attention well enough that I kept reading. The further I got in it, the more suspenseful and exciting it got. Though it is fictional and everything in it is the author's ideas of what might happen in the case of a total loss of power, the book is also a sobering read as it made me think of what it might be like if we lost all of the power and technology we are do dependent on. This book shows what it could be like, and it would most likely be even worse.

I liked the characters a lot...especially Max, as he did his best to keep his friends safe at the expense of his own safety..... and I was glad how the book ended. Looking forward to book 2

Deep Shadows may very well be Ms. Chapman's best achievement yet! This dystopian novel is staggering, so realistic that when I laid the book aside, I fully expected conditions from the book to be actual! I was forced to look at the world around me differently, and expected to discover my surroundings as they are described in this powerful novel.

The author has portrayed a terrifying fictitious event in a dramatic yet realistic manner. The events depicted in this novel are very real possibilities. I found myself inspecting power lines in an atypical manner, unlike any other time in my life. Deep Shadows changed the way I see the world, and the importance of modifications in our lifestyles for self preservation.

Characters throughout this novel are realistic and respond to their surroundings and current events in the most expected and humanistic manner. Abney, Texas is a representation of any small community, and the residents presented are authentic to their circumstances. An incident of such magnitude brings out the worst and the best in the residents of Abney. Compassion and benevolence among neighbors is admirable, and hysteria, violence and hatred in others exhibits the true nature of humans under extreme duress.

I highly recommend Deep Shadows! This is no ordinary story. It is reality fiction at its best, and everyone from young adults to the elderly can relate to the possibilities this powerful novel represents. Impressive!

This book has such an interesting premise, but somehow the author managed to make it the least-exciting book I've read in this genre. After reading about 100 pages, I thought that she probably could have omitted the first 90 pages or so. But then the monotonous approach to a post-apocalyptic world continued to drone on...for another 200+ pages. And without much resolved, this book just wasn't worth it for me. The main characters still face all the same problems they do as they're introduced and there isn't much further explanation into their backgrounds or obstacles that really challenge and therefore show depth of character. The positive? The grammar was decent, even if the vocabulary was, like the rest of the content, elementary. Even the Christian undertones weren't strong enough to grab this reader. The characters fall flat, and the main character even seemed whiny at times (who cares about a game warden during a post-apocalyptic nightmare when an older woman hunts a deer to feed her neighborhood anyway?) The inconsistent perspective shifts were an opportunity to deepen characters' motives, but even that felt more random and list-y than anything. This is the type of book that makes me want to remind writers to "show not tell."

What a riveting story that Vannetta Chapman has written! Deep Shadows keeps you on your toes from the beginning until the very end! Each page beckons you to keep reading to see how the town and its people will survive and continue living their lives despite the solar flair that threatens life as they know it. You find yourself enveloped in the characters of the story and in no time you are talking to the book as if you know the people!

This dystopian genre is new for me to read, and different than Vannetta Chapman's previous Amish stories, but what a story it is! Vannetta Chapman has expanded her genre and I can't wait to continue reading about Max, Shelby and Carter.

Deep Shadows by Vannetta Chapman is much different than any of her other books that I've read, but I think my favorite so far. I found this story to be captivating, believable and alarming. When I first thought of the dystopia genre, I was skeptical that I would enjoy it, but Vannetta has written this story in such a way that it makes you believe it could happen, here, today. It had me researching prepper forums so that my family can be prepared should this scenario unfold. As expected, Vannetta's research is thorough, her characters are likable and well developed, and the ending leaves the reader clamoring for more. I am eagerly looking forward to the next books in this series.

Wow! This book that really made me re-think the preparations I've made about surviving a national disaster. My brother is a prepper, and I thought a well-stocked pantry and fruit cellar was adequate to get us through any initial catastrophe (ok, there may be guns and ammo, too - not going into the whole inventory here). But reading Deep Shadows made me realize there are a lot of questions I hadn't considered: transportation? (modern cars' computers would be fried) resources for bartering? (when cash is irrelevant) medicine? (beyond the bandaids and rubbing alcohol) communication? (only ham radios would work after cell phones are disabled). And would I have the courage to WANT to survive if I knew I'd probably never see my out-of-town family members again?

Chapman's first book in the new Remnant series is heart-stopping. As usual, her characters are real and engaging, and we quickly learn to care about their challenges. But this dystopian genre is anything but "usual" for most of her devoted readers. Four friends find their hike interrupted by a magnificent display of the aurora borealis. The only problem is they're in Texas - normally way too far south for these "northern lights," caused by a massive solar eruption. When planes fall out of the sky, they begin to realize something is terribly wrong. But they have no conception of how radically their lives - and civilization - will change.

Written from a Christian worldview, this book examines the challenge of surviving the loss of modern technology without also losing faith. Hospitality and sharing takes on a whole new meaning when your own material supplies are limited, and there is no earthly expectation of finding more. We see the thin veneer of civilization quickly dissolving as fear and greed take over in the new order. Looting by individuals and gangs amp up to whole cities trying to take over other communities and their resources. It's a chilling picture of what society might devolve into without the technology and conveniences we've become accustomed to.

Like all good books, this is also a love story. Neighbors Shelby and Max once dated in high school, but broken promises long ago have created a platonic distance between them. Will this crisis change that as they rely on each other to survive? Shelby's son Carter is an insulin-dependent diabetic. Her love for him is magnified as a widowed, single parent. Her faith has always been strong, but can she trust God to carry them when there is no long-term supply of insulin available? And will Carter see the necessity of faith for himself? People in their small town of Abney, Texas are dying left and right - will faith help them survive, or will they need to compromise their values in this new topsy-turvy world?

I read this book in just a few days - and woke up thinking about it first thing each morning. What a relief to realize we still had electricity! It was THAT real and gripping. Deep Shadows made me examine my spiritual preparations for disasters, determining to keep my eyes on the "steadfast love of the LORD that endures forever" when other things change. I think I'll restock my emergency pantry to have more to share (and barter with!) should the need arise, and there may be a ham radio in my near future. But I also want to develop the courage and fortitude to continue to put others first if times get tough. This was a great read at several levels, and I can't wait for the next book in the series to see how life goes on in Abney, Texas

Isn’t it great when two great products combine to become one really super, duper thing? What would Reese’s be if there wasn’t chocolate in my peanut butter, what would Twix be without that soft nugget and caramel? In this same way, I’m so excited that Vannetta Chapman has finally penned a novel in the suspense genre! I can finally read a book by Ms. Chapman and be able to find out what makes this author so exciting to everyone else.

Seeing the Northern Lights should always be on a bucket list, but never as far south as Texas. Shelby knows this is a sign of impending danger and the airplane falling out of the sky put an exclamation mark on that thought. As Shelby, her neighbor Max and their friends make their way down the mountain, it becomes apparent that those beautiful colors in the sky are causing havoc everywhere. As the sounds of additional explosions continue, the friends hastily make way for their small town. All power is down, cell phones are silent and most of the cars are dead weights in the middle of the road. Amateur CBers are finding out that this interruption of the power, etc. isn’t isolated to their small town, it’s happening around the globe. The government and the townspeople begin strategizing on short and long term solutions to their current situation. Within days, criminal elements are already looking for a way to exploit “The Flare” to their own gain. Can they join together as a community and help each other out during this time or does every man begin to fend for himself? If the power does every fail, you won’t be able to read this on a Kindle, so go to your local bookstore and BUY THIS BOOK!!!

This is the first in a new trilogy by Vannetta Chapman. I tell you that so that you understand this book doesn’t provide you with a final resolution, it only gets you 1/3 of the way there. The good news is that means you still have 2/3 of this series to long for, I know that I will. Have you ever woke from a nap and had such a vivid nightmare during that nap that you feel you are still inside that nightmare? That’s how I was reading this book. No one was home so I had the TV off and only 1 lamp on in the house. Whenever I’d stop and take a drink of water, my mind would be telling me to conserve that water since I wasn’t sure when the power would be back up and water would be flowing freely again. Yes, I know that’s silly, but that’s how I felt while I was reading this book. Ms. Chapman has developed characters and a small town that just beg to be helped and I for one am ready to offer my assistance!

Is this a "guy's book"? Yes, Yes a thousand times YES!!! Planes falling from the sky, police chases, political upheaval, gun fights, etc! This book has it all and has such a great story flow that I was able to finish this in one afternoon. I can’t believe I have to wait for the next book to come out and then even longer for the ending in book 3. Either way, this is a definite MUST PURCHASE for any guy who loves these end of time stories.

After reading the prequel story, I was very excited to continue this series, and I enjoyed this installment. I liked all the main characters, especially how protective they were of each other--I especially had to smile at the times when Shelby was trying to protect Carter while he was simultaneously trying to protect her. I also thought the realistic teenager perspective on what was going on and how the world was changing was very well done. Shelby's mix of trust and hesitance with Max felt very realistic with their pasts, as well as Max's obvious commitment to care for her and Carter and the way he hadn't pressed her for more than friendship.

The setting/scenario was frighteningly well done, and I got so caught up in thinking out all the changes and what they would mean that I found myself surprised on multiple occasions when I reached for my cell phone or a light switch and found that they actually worked--as though I had somehow conditioned my mind to a world without power and had to jolt myself back to my own normal world! I was impressed with the way the town came together, although some of the power struggles and their ramifications were a bit chilling, and some of the questions that Max in particular struggled with didn't have easy answers. I did find it interesting that with all the references back to older generations who had survived without power, survived world wars, etc., there wasn't much mention of the fact that older generations also hadn't had most of their infrastructure, economy, etc. wiped out. Not that I think people couldn't find a way to survive without the power grid, but there's definitely more involved in that scenario than a simple return to an older way of life, and while that was obvious in the town's struggle, it was never pointed out directly.

The struggle surrounding Carter's diabetes and his need for medication was one of the most sobering issues of the whole book, and I'm very interested to see what possible solutions there might be in future books. That said, there were a few times when the terminology felt a little off--for example, a few times when someone mentioned checking "insulin levels" instead of sugar/glucose levels. There were also a few times when someone's dialogue felt unnaturally descriptive--for example, when someone waiting at the pharmacy remarks that "a middle-aged man" left with a bag a few minutes earlier, which is not the kind of detail I've ever heard anyone volunteer in real life. ;) But these were the exception, not the rule, which is probably why those instances stuck out to me.

Content--mentions of accidents, fires, explosions, etc.; mentions of fighting and gunplay, including people shot; mentions of wounds, blood, and deaths; mentions of various crimes; mentions of divorce; mentions of drug addiction

I have been an avid reader for a long time and have always read a book for enjoyment, to escape reality. Every now and then I come across a book that shakes me, makes me think and wonder, and causes me to take a step back and relook at my surroundings. This. Was. That. Book. Do not let the author's name fool you! I have been reading Vannetta's Amish fiction for a long time and I love the way she writes them. This book was totally different, and not just because it wasn't about Amish people. I feel like I have found a deeper part of Vannetta to connect with, a raw emotional part that has been building up over the years just begging to come out in book form. Typically I feel a connection with characters, however in reading this book I felt a connection to the author.

I am typically a quick reader, however with this book I chose to take my time and recommend that you do the same. Deep Shadows will make you take a look around and wonder. You will think to yourself, could this happen to our world today? I know I did. Not only did I think about this book while I was reading, I thought about it during the day, at night when I couldn't sleep. I just kept thinking about what this world full of technology would do if one day it wasn't available. How would people survive? And more importantly, would I lose my faith in God, or lean on Him like the characters in the book.

Although the entire book consisted of a very heavy topic, I appreciated Vannetta's willingness to show the characters faith. I enjoyed the local pastor who wouldn't give up in a world of darkness. I especially enjoyed the church scenes where he lifted up the name of the Lord, refused to let the circumstances alter his view of the Lord, and encourage his congregation to do the same. I think this could be applied to our world today. Although we have not suffered from a solar flare, we do live in trying times and need to lean on the Lord now more than ever.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. While I understand a deep topic such as a solar flare (which I learned are real - thank you Vannetta!) is not for everyone, I encourage you to try this with an open mind. Look at it as a book that shows how a community can try to come together during a crisis, or how a mother will do anything to save her son, or how a friendship is tested. You will not regret it!

Deep Shadows
Vanetta Chapman

Book Summary: All It Takes Is One Night to Plunge the World into Darkness Life in Abney, Texas, is predictable and safe--until the night a massive solar flare wipes out all modern technology. But his highest priority--to keep Shelby and her son safe--could prove to be the biggest challenge of all. As the brilliant northern lights give way to deep shadows, Max and Shelby's faith will be tested like never before. Only one rule remains: Find a way to survive. In this first book in an eerily plausible dystopian series, a memorable cast of characters must navigate a familiar world thrown into chaos.

Review: I love Ms. Chapman’s writing. Her characters are relatable and realistic. The storylines are realistic and easy to read. Yet, for me, I do not like this type of story. I tried really hard to enjoy the topic, yet I found it tragic. Her descriptions were realistic and scary. I think that Shell was a little self serving at times. Understandable at times. This was more for a prepper or doomsday enthusiastic type. I am not that type of person. I have enjoyed all of her book previously and believe I will enjoy her books after this series. The books are well written and well thought out. Ms. Chapman is truly a gifted writer and normally a favorite of mine, but had this been written by anyone else, I would have quit after 30 pages.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Harvest House for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone. My friends, first, did you see the guest post from the author of Deep Shadows, Vannetta Chapman a few weeks ago? It's on the characteristics of heroes/heroines in Dystopian fiction. Check it out if you haven't. =)

Now, onto Deep Shadows. What did I expect? I wasn't too sure, especially since I've only read Vannetta's Amish stories, but I guess I was intrigued by what "Dystopia" would be like in a Christian sense. I immediately thought of the famous Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. Yet, that really wasn't dystopia, but more focused on the end in an apocalyptic sense. Well, wait no further, because I can tell you, dystopia written in Deep Shadows by Vannetta is not about the end, it's about overcoming individually and collectively, and trusting God.

From the start, I was hooked. I couldn't stop! As the cover suggests, it's dark - not dark like a psycho thriller, but dark as it there are sad times. A disaster that struck and caused many different kinds of reaction from people, some noble, others not even close. What makes this different than other dystopian fiction I've read like The Hunger Games, is this is very real. It is possible a solar flare can knock out power and cause much more damage on a wide range like it is in the book. How we deal with it, is at the crux of Deep Shadows, and that's also what makes this story so riveting and intense. The characters represent the extremes, and those in the middle, with depth and sincerity. The message has stuck onto me like glue, and took days to not subside. I always find books that give us something to think about, something to hold on to are the best kinds, and Deep Shadows is right there. I can't wait for Book 2 and I can't wait to see what else Vannetta has in store for us!

Let me start by saying this was a very intriguing book. I saw it available on Netgalley and loved the cover, which is what initially drew me in. When I read the book blurb it drew me in further so I knew I had to read this book.

When I opened it I was immediately drawn into the story. The plot is something that I have long worried might happen, the collapse of not only technology, but our very way of life. I know most people believe that it's an impossibility with all the backups, but let me ask you this what if it did happen? What if you were suddenly without the basic necessities for living? Scary when you really think of it.

This story takes place in modern day and brings us the engaging story of Shelby Sparks and Max Berkman, who are both neighbors and close friends for years. Shelby's character touched me more than I can describe. She is the mother of a teenage son who has a life long health issue, diabetes. She has learned and taught her son how to live with the disease, but that doesn't mean the worry goes away. When a solar flare hits her first thought is of him and how to ensure he gets his medication and a somewhat healthy diet to maintain his blood sugar. Max made a decision years ago that impacted his relationship with Shelby, but it didn't change his feelings so when the flare hits she and her son is his first concern. Both are faced to make decisions and sacrifices in order to survive, but neither loose their faith.

We are introduced to strong, engaging characters that after finishing the book I found myself still thinking about. The plot flows effortlessly and swallowed me heart and soul. I kept putting myself in the story line and thinking what if. I could go on and on about how much I loved this book, but I would only be repeating myself. The book has elements of mystery, spine tingling suspense, faith and a mild romance. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Light Creates Horrific Darkness...

Fans of Terri Blackstock's the Restoration series will enjoy Vannetta Chapman's foray into the future from the past. Deep Shadows,#1 The Remnant, revolves around four friends. We meet author Shelby, whose son Carter has just graduated; lawyer Mark, her neighbor and past boyfriend; and Bianca and Patrick, their close friends. While hiking, the group discovers a solar flare so great that power throughout the country and possibly world has been cut off. The world as we know it changes drastically. Suddenly life becomes about survival, fighting off people who would seize what they can find, and taking care of the less fortunate. This is a truly terrorizing book because one cannot help but feel like this is a very real possibility in our world today.

Would our neighbors start arming themselves and setting up neighborhood watches? Would people become a law unto themselves?

Fortunately, the characters in this book have a solid faith to rely upon. Sometimes they have to shore each other up, as disaster upon disaster seems to occur. Are they strong enough to overcome the obstacles? And will Shelby ever look at Mark the way he wants her to? How far will Shelby go to protect her son? Chapman writes in such a way that draws you unwillingly into the now unstable town. You, the reader, vicariously cannot escape the effects of the solar flare, but must use all your wits, faith, and friendships to see you through this horrific time.

This is only book one, and the book ended on a definite note of more to come. There are also discussion questions and lists of things needed to stockpile for such an emergency.

I gratefully received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

It could happen, the way of life as we now know it,could disappear fast. Deep Shadows takes you into a world were life has turned upside down due to an solar flare that knocked out the power grid. It made me think of the simple things that we now take for granted. Common items like food, electricity, water, bathrooms, and just common civility. All could be blown by the wayside when the electrical grid is no longer working.

Written with such realism it made me feel as though I was there. Turning the pages I just kept on thinking, what I would do if this happened to my world? I know I would be exactly like Shelby and try to think of ways I could keep my family safe and healthy. We all want to protect our family. She also made me realize that we can't stay in our small bubble all the time. We need to reach out when we can and help others along the way too.

I love that the characters never gave up hope no matter how dire the situation seemed. They prayed and continued to ask God for his protection and guidance.

Make sure to keep turning the pages till the very end of the book for helpful hints including, Emergency Preparation Lists for Foods with a Long shelf Life, What to Pack in an Emergency Kit, basic 3 month emergency Food Stash, and recipes for homemade Laundry Detergent and toothpaste.

Although I would feel okay if the story just ended here, I can imagine different scenarios that could happen in the future. I can't wait to read more of this series!
A wonderful, wonderful read!

I loved this book! It was fascinating to imagine what our world would be like without all of our modern conveniences. There were situations that happened I hadn't even thought of and a few that totally shocked me, which needless to say made for an exciting read! For instance, how do we take care of people in hospitals and nursing homes or what happens when life-saving prescriptions are no longer made or able to be transported? How about when food is no longer available in the grocery store? There was danger, excitement, action, romance, not a dull moment! The main characters were interesting, partly because Shelby and Max had been high school sweethearts years ago and there were still some lingering feelings, though Shelby fought against it. There was a hint of romance in the story. They were both pretty smart about what to do; Shelby was a writer who had researched solar flares before and Max, an attorney who was very logical and did what needed to be done. They were Christians who prayed and attended church, along with their two friends. Shelby's son, Carter, wasn't sure what he believed about God. It was interesting to get the different viewpoints of the three of them. Their pastor had a wonderful, encouraging message about the Lord being good and that His love will endure forever, no matter what happened or will happen. I loved how they supported each other and their community. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens with these wonderful characters and where the situation goes from here. I highly recommend it!

When an author begins to write in a genre different from the one I am used to reading, I often wonder what to expect. That is how I felt when Vannetta Chapman announced that she was going to write a dystopian series -- and all I had read of hers were Amish stories.

Well, I was not disappointed in her new direction in Deep Shadows. The story was not a pleasant one -- in fact, it is pretty frightening to think of having to live through the situations it included. Vannetta's telling of the story, though, made for a very intriguing read.

One of the most engaging elements of the story is exploring how the characters deal with the difficulties that come when their normal day-to-day lives are completely turned upside down. Vannetta has obviously down her "homework" in detailing the various scenarios that have to be dealt with. Max and Shelby each bring their own strengths, weaknesses, pasts, and fears into the situation. Shelby is definitely a mother driven by concern for her son's health; my only criticism would be that her focus seemed to drag down and get a little repetitive in some spots.

I am anxious to see how the story continues in the next book in the series, as well as reading the prequel in an ebook entitled Overshadowed.

Eerily gripping. I'm not a huge dystopian fan -- especially this kind because it seems so plausible and it gives me the heebie-jeebies. But I adore Vannetta Chapman so much that I will follow her anywhere, including into literary Dystopia. :-) And I'm glad I did (once the nightmares faded!)

Amazing characters that I bonded with from the get go are faced with the unthinkable as Chapman unravels their world with an epic natural disaster. We have become so complacent about our reliance on technology that I kept finding myself astonished by the catastrophic circumstances that kept cropping up. Everything from accessibility of fresh water to life-saving drugs become a battle for survival.

And, of course, an event of this magnitude brings out both the best...and the worst...in people. Makes for a mesmerizing read. And I love the way Chapman has woven a solid faith thread throughout it all. It doesn't necessarily make things easier for Max and Shelby and their friends and family, but it anchors them during these desperate times. There's plenty of action, the hint of romance and enough closure at the conclusion to book one of the Remnant series that you'll be satisfied to sit on your laurels until book two, Rising Storm, comes out in February.

This is a well-written book with interesting characters and a plot that was very realistically portrayed. The author very carefully put together a story filled with enterprising, but for the most part unprepared people and how they reacted in the aftermath of a catastrophic event that left them without electricity, cars to drive, or stores with shelves brimming with a never-ending supply of groceries. The book contains people who work together for the greater good, and those who only think about themselves. I’m positive you’d meet both types in a situation such as this.

The book definitely gave me a lot to think about. Throughout the years, there have been times now and then when people have sounded an alarm and nothing came of up. I’m not sure if I’m just too complacent, but all I did was fill every container in the house with water—just in case, and trust that the extra jars of peanut butter would see us through. I’d definitely be in trouble.

I recommend this if you’d like to read a good story that will open your eyes.

DEEP SHADOWS is an extraordinary novel by Vannetta Chapman. She is one of my favorite authors, and I think this is one of her finest works. The storyline is really out-of-the-box thinking, and the twists in the plot will have you hanging on every word. I could not put it down. Shelby and Max are very realistic and well-developed characters, as well as are the many other supporting characters. Shelby and Max have a shared past that is still in need of some repair, even though they are now good friends. They also share a faith in God that He will see them through this tragedy. They never lose hope. Without faith, everything else is meaningless. This is a story about a mother’s love, loss and forgiveness. DEEP SHADOWS really gives you a lot to think about. You do not want to miss this one!

This has to have been one of my favorite books this year. I am so used to Vannetta Chapman writing Amish stories that this was a bit different but in such a fantastic way.
What would happen if there was a solar flare that wipes out all electronics? It is a scary thought. This is how this book begins. What will people do in this situation. Can we survive without all the technology that we are used to. This is told in a very believable way and it is really scary. I can't wait for the second book in this series to see how the characters have been surviving. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion.
