Florida dog trainer Rick Roth is struggling to get his dog training business off the ground. He blew his inheritance on his dream of running his own business and now the money is almost gone.
When an elderly Cuban man pays him a large sum of money to do a “board-and-train” for a two year-old Jack Russell Terrier named, “Mojito Joe”... Rick is overjoyed. Until the man turns up dead and Rick discovers that the dog was stolen from Miami drug kingpin Raul Mendoza.
Now he’s afraid there may be a cartel hitman on his trail.
To make matters worse, he has fallen in love with the little dog’s personality and his ability to attract new clients to his dog training business like never before.
Throw in a gaggle of blue haired old ladies who want to seduce Rick, an overprotective Jewish mother “Mama Roth” who runs an unlicensed marijuana dispensary from the penthouse of her condo and an evil crosstown rival who outspends him at every opportunity and you get a rollicking romp through the hot and humid streets of Sarasota, Florida.

This one was a tough one to review. On one hand I love the characters and plot. The characters are great, anchored by Mojito Joe, the wonder dog. He makes you want to go out and adopt a dog right away. Rick and Alisa a good hard working people, and Mamma Roth’s blue hairs are great. The plot is interesting too, a bit predictable with what’s making Mojito Joe go crazy but overall a fun story. On the other hand the story is a bit slow and focuses a lot on actually training a dog which really made it feel like it was dragging in parts. Overall though I liked it and if you’re a dog person you’ll probably love it.
A little bit of Tim Dorsey and a little bit Carl Hiaasen, this book takes place in FL with a dog trainer, a drug cartel and a dog name Mojito Joe. Things get a little crazy and Mojito Joe will have you wanting to go out and get a jack russell terrier.
My only complaint is the book is in need of some editing as there are sentences that repeat and words that are typed and not the word the author was attempting to write, making you stop and reread the sentence to figure out what he really meant. I downloaded with kindle unlimited so I can look past these problems as it was free but this may bother some.
I would have given it a higher rating had it been edited better.
