About the author

V. J. James was born in Changanassery, Kottayam, Kerala, India. He attended St.Theresa's Higher Secondary School, Vazhappally and St. Mary's Higher Secondary School, Champakulam, before studying at St. Berchmans College, Changanacherry. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mar Athanasius College of Engineering. He currently works for Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, as an engineer.
He is known for his unique style of presenting subjects in Malayalam literature world. His first book, Purapaadinte Pusthakam (പുറപ്പാടിന്റെ പുസ്തകം), was published by DC Books as the winning novel in the novel competition which was conducted as a part of the 25th anniversary celebration of DC Books in 1999. Malayalam film Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol (English: When the Grapevines Sprout) loosely based on the short story Pranayopanishath by V. J. James. His style of narration gained much attention and praise.

പുസ്തകം എന്ന് പേരിട്ടു...
മുരളിയും കൊപ്പനും അനീറ്റയുമെല്ലാം അതിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിച്ചു..
ഒരിക്കലും തിരിച്ചുവരാത്ത ആ യാത്ര അവരിൽ പലർക്കും നിത്യദുരിതത്തിൽ നിന്നുമുള്ള മോചനമായിരുന്നു...

A cult classic of Malayalam literature, The Book of Exodus by V. J. James (translated by Ministhy S.) is a tale of rural Kochi, Kerala. The Book of Exodus is also the title of the book that the protagonist, Kunjootty, is trying to write about the people in his community and their ways of living in his native village, Potta Thuruthu, far away from any influence of the modern ways of living.

The concept of a cursed village in literature is not an unknown one, and the cursed land makes an appearance in this narrative too. Kunjootty's dream to reach the mountains beyond the borders of his village to join his ancestors is like a dormant desire to escape the damned life in his community, but the urge to uncover the root cause of the ill-fatedness among the people in Potta Thuruthu keeps him from going. His personal journey becomes a circular one, a product of the curse on the people in his land. He dreams of the firebird often, as in the stories of his Valli Ammachi, and it tethers him with a greater force to the land of Potta Thuruthu.

A myriad of characters appear in this tale and disappear too before I could comprehend the meaning of their addition to the narrative. Reading this is like looking over the lives of many all at once and simply observing as their doom approaches them one by one. The voyeuristic quality of the story did seem a little far-fetched to me, as after a certain time, I began to question what is the point of this all? Myths, legends, and real lives intertwined to create an experience, an experience that'll try to immerse you, and if it works, you're in for a treat. There are instances of magical realism and a similarity with Gabriel Garcia Marquez's style that the fans of this genre will definitely appreciate. However, I faced a common problem that I do while reading translated literature, and that is to penetrate the veil it has adorned all over it. But I wouldn't let my inability to stop you from picking up this gem that has been loved for about 25 years and is immensely popular among readers of Malayalam literature.

കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ഒരുപാടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും എല്ലായിടത്തും തെളിഞ്ഞ് നിൽക്കുന്നത് മരണമാണ്. കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിയിലൂടെ പോട്ടത്തുരുത്തിന്റെ കഥയാണ് ഇതിൽ പറയുന്നത്. മഹത്തരമെന്നൊന്നും ഞാൻ പറയുന്നില്ല. പക്ഷേ നഷ്ടമേതും ആവാത്ത ഒരു വായനാനുഭവമാവും

ലക്ഷ്യം തേടി അലഞ്ഞവന്റെയല്ല. നേരറിയാവുന്നവന്റെ വ്യഥകളുടെ കഥയാണ് പുറപ്പാടിന്റെ പുസ്തകം.

പോട്ടത്തുരുത്തിലെ ആളുകളുടെ ജീവിതം അനാവരണം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുകയാണ് ഇവിടെ. പുറപ്പാടിന്റെ പുസ്തകം എഴുതുന്ന കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിയ്ക്ക് ചുറ്റും തന്റെ നാട്ടിലെ ആളുകൾ തന്നെ കഥാപാത്രമായി വരുന്നു. കോപ്പനും ഉണ്ണിച്ചീരയും ഭാസ്കരമേനോനും ഏലിയും സൂസന്നയും അനീറ്റയും സവാരിയാസും ഐസക്കും തെരേസയും എഴുത്തച്ഛനും മുരളിയും വായനക്കാർക്കു മുമ്പിൽ ആടി തകർക്കുന്നു. മരണത്തിലേക്ക് സ്വയം നടന്നു കയറുന്ന ചില കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ വായനക്കാരെ അസ്വസ്ഥമാക്കുന്നു. നേരറിയാവുന്നവരുടെ വ്യഥകളാണ് ഇവിടെ പങ്കുവെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. മരണവും രോഗവും ദുരന്തങ്ങളും മാത്രം കണ്ടു കണ്ടു ജീവിതമേ മടുക്കുന്ന ഒരു അവസ്ഥയിൽ കൊണ്ടെത്തിക്കുന്നു. അവസാന പ്രതീക്ഷയും അസ്തമിച്ചു അന്ധകാരത്തിൽ ആഴ്ത്തുന്നു. അൽപ്പമെങ്കിലും മനസ്സിന് കുളിർമ നൽകുന്ന ഒരു കാര്യം പോലും ഒന്നും ഇവിടെ സംഭവിക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നുള്ളത് വളരെ നിരാശാജനകമാണ്. വായനക്കാരെ വിഷാദത്തിൽ താഴ്ത്താൻ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിന് കഴിവുണ്ട്.

ദത്താപഹാരം, ചോരശാസ്ത്രം, നിരീശ്വരൻ എന്നീ പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലൂടെ പരിചയിച്ച എഴുത്തുകാരനാണ് ശ്രീ വി.ജെ ജെയിംസ്. ഈ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾക്ക് എല്ലാം മുമ്പ് അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയ നോവലാണ് പുറപ്പാടിൻ്റെ പുസ്തകം എന്ന് വായനയ്ക്ക് ശേഷമാണ് ഞാനറിഞ്ഞത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ മറ്റ് കൃതികൾ പോലെ തന്നെ, ഈ കൃതിയിലും തഴക്കം വന്ന ഒരു എഴുത്തുകാരൻ്റെ വൈഭവം നമുക്ക് കാണാൻ സാധിക്കും. പറഞ്ഞുപോകുന്ന ഓരോ കഥകളിലും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ആശയങ്ങൾ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളിച്ച് കൊണ്ട് വായനക്കാരെ ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന തരത്തിലുള്ള എഴുത്താണ് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റേത്. പ്രമേയഘടനയിലും ആഖ്യാനത്തിലും ഉയർന്ന നിലവാരം പുലർത്തുന്ന ഈ നോവൽ മിത്ത്, ആത്മീയത, കുടുംബജീവിതം, എന്നിങ്ങനെ പല മേഖലകളെ സ്പർശിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

പുസ്തകം തുടങ്ങുന്നത് തന്നെ ഒരു മുത്തശ്ശിക്കഥ പോലെ തോന്നിക്കുന്ന ഹോമപ്പക്ഷിയുടെ കഥയിലൂടെയാണ്. മേഘലോകങ്ങളിൽ വസിക്കുന്ന ഹോമപ്പക്ഷികൾക്ക് പക്ഷെ മേഘം വിട്ട് ഭൂമിയിലിറങ്ങാൻ അനുമതി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. അങ്ങനെയിരിക്കെ, ഒരു ഹോമപ്പക്ഷിക്ക് ഭൂമി കാണണമെന്ന് മോഹമുദിക്കുകയും ഭൂമിയിൽ പറന്നിറങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. വിലക്ക് ലംഘിച്ച് ഭൂമിയിലിറങ്ങിയ പക്ഷിക്ക് പക്ഷെ, ആകാശവിതാനത്തിലേക്ക് തിരികെ പറന്ന് പോകാൻ സാധിച്ചില്ല. ശവംതീനിക്കഴുകന്മാർ ഹോമപ്പക്ഷിയെ ആക്രമിച്ച് കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. തൂവലുകൾ മാത്രം ശേഷിച്ച ചാമപ്പൊറ്റയിൽ നിന്നും ആകാശത്തെത്താൻ ഈ തൂവലുകൾ സദാ ശ്രമിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. ഈ കഥയിലൂടെ നാം പരിചയപ്പെടുന്ന ഹോമപ്പക്ഷിയും പക്ഷിയുടെ തൂവലുകളും പോലെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ രക്ഷപ്പെടാതെ പല വിധത്തിൽ വിധിക്ക് കീഴ്പ്പെടേണ്ടി വരുന്ന പോട്ടത്തുരുത്തിലെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ കഥയാണ് ഈ നോവൽ.

തുടക്കം മുതൽ എല്ലാത്തിനും മൂകസാക്ഷിയാകേണ്ടി വരുന്ന കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിയോടൊപ്പം അവിടുത്തെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതങ്ങളിലൂടെ നമ്മളും പോട്ടത്തുരുത്തിലൂടെ പ്രയാണം ചെയ്യുകയാണ്. കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് മുത്തശ്ശി പറഞ്ഞുകേട്ട ചാമപ്പൊറ്റടെയും ഹോമപ്പക്ഷിയുടെയും കഥയിലെ വസ്തുത തേടിയുള്ള കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിയുടെ യാത്ര അവസാനം ലക്ഷ്യസ്ഥാനത്ത് എത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. "അധികം സമ്പാദിച്ചവന് ഒന്നും മിച്ചമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല, അൽപം സമ്പാദിച്ചവന് ഒട്ടും കുറവുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല" എന്ന സാരാംശം എല്ലാ അർഥത്തിലും കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിക്കും കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിയുടെ കാഴ്ചകളിലൂടെയും അനുഭവങ്ങളിലൂടെയും ജീവിതത്തിലൂടെയും ഒപ്പം സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന നമുക്കും കഥാനന്തരം വെളിപ്പെടുകയാണ്. മനസ്സിൽ വിങ്ങൽ അവശേഷിപ്പിച്ച് കടന്നുപോകുന്ന ഓരോ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും വായനക്കാരുടെ മനസ്സിൽ തങ്ങിനിൽക്കുമെന്നതിൽ സംശയമില്ല.

കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടി പോട്ടത്തുരുത്തിലെ നിവാസിയാണ്, അവിടത്തെ ആൾക്കാരും, അവരുടെ കഥകളും ഒരു പുസ്തകത്തിൽ കുറിയ്ക്കയാണ് കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടി, ആ പുസ്തകമാണ് പുറപ്പാടിന്റെ പുസ്തകം. പേര് പോലെ തന്നെ പല പുറപ്പാടുകളും രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുണ്ട് ഈ കഥയിൽ.

ഹോമകിളികളുടെയും ചാമപൊറ്റയുടെയും കഥകൾ കേട്ടാണ് കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടി വളർന്നത്. കഥ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടി ആശുപത്രിയിലാണ്, സുസന്നയെ കാണാതെ പോലീസ് അന്വേഷിക്കയാണ്. അമ്മ ഏലി, അച്ഛൻ സവരിയാസ്, കൂട്ടുകാരൻ ഐസക് കൂടെ ഉണ്ട്. സുസന്നയുടെ തിരോധാനത്തിന്റെ സത്യാവസ്ഥ കഥ അവസാനിക്കുമ്പോളാണ് വെളിവാവുക. ആ സംഭവമാണ് പക്ഷെ കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിയേ ആകെ മാറ്റുന്നത്.

നമ്മൾ നാട്ടിലെ അന്തേവാസികളെ പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നു. കൊപ്പൻ, അയാൾ കൂട്ടികൊണ്ടു വരുന്ന അഭയാർത്ഥി ചാത്തൂട്ടി, മൂന്ന് നാടോടികളായ വേലാണ്ടി, മുനിയാണ്ടി, മുരുകാണ്ടി, ഓഫീസിൽ കൂടെ പണിയെടുക്കുന്ന ദിവാകര മേനോൻ, റിക്ഷാവണ്ടി ഇടിക്കാൻ വന്നപ്പോൾ കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടി രക്ഷിച്ച കുട്ടി നന്ദിനി, അവളുടെ അച്ഛൻ മുരളി, എഴുത്താശാൻ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഗോവിന്ദന്കുട്ടിയാശാൻ, ഫ്രാൻസിൽ നിന്നും വന്ന ചിരിയങ്കൻ, അയാളുടെ മകൾ അനീറ്റ അങ്ങനെ പലരും.

ഈ പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നവരിൽ പലരും നാട് വിടുന്നു, ചിലര് മരിക്കുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ എല്ലാവരുടെയും ജീവിതം തൊട്ടു തലോടിക്കൊണ്ട് കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടയുടെ ജീവിതവും കടന്നു പോകുന്നു, എല്ലാം പുറപ്പാടിന്റെ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു അയാൾ.

ഓർമയിൽ തങ്ങി നിന്ന എപ്പിസോഡ്:
1. പുഴയിലെ വെള്ളത്തിന് എന്തോ രുചി വ്യത്യാസമുണ്ടെന്ന് തോന്നി ഉണിച്ചീറക്കു. അത് ഈനാമ്പേച്ചികൾ ഇണ ചേരുന്നത് കൊണ്ടാണ് എന്നാണ് അവളുടെ വിശ്വാസം . ഈനാമ്പേച്ചികളെ ഓടിച്ചു വിടാൻ, ആണുങ്ങൾ തുണി ഇലാതെ പുഴക്ക് ചുറ്റും ഓടണം - അങ്ങനെ ഓടുന്നു കൊപ്പനും ചാത്തൂട്ടിയും.
2. കെട്ടുകലക്കു സമയം, നാട്ടുകാരെല്ലാം മീനും, ചെമ്മീനും പിടിക്കാൻ ഇറങ്ങി. കായലിൽ, ചാത്തൂട്ടി, പൊക്കൻ, കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിയും കൂട്ടി, രണ്ടു വഞ്ചികൾ അടുപ്പിച്ചു, ചങ്ങല കൊണ്ടൊരു ടെക്‌നീക്കു പ്രവർത്തിപ്പിച്ചു, ചെമ്മീൻ താനേ വഞ്ചിയിൽ കയറി. അങ്ങനെ തിരിച്ചു വരവേ, മുടിയില്ലാത്ത ശിരസ്സുകൾ ഇവരെ പിന്തുടർന്ന്. അതാണ് കായൽ പൊട്ടൻ. കോപ്പൻറെ അപ്പൻ ചോനാച്ചുവിനെ കൊന്നത് കായൽ പൊട്ടനാണെന്നാണ് കോപ്പൻറെ വിശ്വാസം.

വലിയ പുതുമയില്ലാത്ത, എന്നാൽ നല്ല വായനാനുഭവം സമ്മാനിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കൃതിയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം.

പോട്ടതുരുത് പോലെയായിരുന്നു കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിയുടെ മനസ്സ്. പോട്ടകള്‍ പോലെ കാലുഷ്യങ്ങള്‍ നിറയെ വേരൂന്നി നില്‍ക്കുന്ന മനസ്സ്. അബദ്ധജടിലമായ ചെയ്തിയാല്‍ തന്നില്‍ നിന്നും അകന്ന് പോയ സൂസ്സന്ന, കുളിര്‍മഴ പോലെ കടന്ന് വന്നിട്ട് കണ്ണീര്‍ മഴ സമ്മാനിച്ച്‌ കടന്ന് പോയ നന്ദിനിയും, അനീറ്റയും, ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ശരം പോലെ ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി ഉത്തരമേതും കരുതിവെക്കാതെ വളഞ്ഞോടിഞ്ഞു ചോദ്യചിഹ്നമായി മറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ദിവാകര മേനോന്‍, അണിഞ്ഞൊരുങ്ങി പള്ളിമേടയില്‍ അച്ചനു അഭിമുഖമായി നിന്ന് തന്‍റെ ജീവിത പാതിയെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാന്‍ വിധി തടസ്സം നില്‍ക്കുന്ന തെരേസ, മനസ്സിന്‍റെ സാധാരണത്വത്തെ കൃത്യമായി ഗണിച്ചു മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ പോയ ഗുരുനാഥന്‍ എഴുത്താശാന്‍ ഇങ്ങനെ പോകുന്നു കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടി മനസിലാക്കിയ മനുഷ്യര്‍. അവരെല്ലാം അവനില്‍ വേദന നിറച്ചവര്‍ ആയിരുന്നു. സ്വതവേ ദുഖിക്കാന്‍ തത്പരനായിരുന്ന കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടിക്ക് ലോകത്തിന്‍റെ വേദനകള്‍ ആകെ തന്നിലേക്ക് സ്വാംശീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് പോലെയായിരുന്നു. ആ വേദനകളില്‍ അയാളുടെ ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ടു പോയി. പല കഥകള്‍, കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ എല്ലാം കൊണ്ടും സമ്പുഷ്ടമാണ് പുറപ്പാടിന്‍റെ പുസ്തകം. മനോഹരമായ ദൃശ്യഭംഗിയോടൊപ്പം അനുസ്യൂതമായി വിഹരിക്കുന്ന, പലരിലൂടെയും സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന നോവല്‍ മികച്ച വായനാനുഭവം സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നു. കുഞ്ഞൂട്ടി നമ്മളിലെവിടെയോ വിളങ്ങി ചേര്‍ന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.

നിലവിൽ നിങ്ങൾക്ക് Depression ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ ഈ ബുക്ക് വായിക്കേണ്ട എന്ന് ഞാൻ പറയും. കാരണം അത്രയ്ക്കും മനഃപ്രയാസമാണ് ഈ ബുക്ക് വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ എനിക്കുണ്ടായത്. 
ലക്ഷ്യം തേടി അലഞ്ഞവന്റെയല്ല, നേരറിയാവുന്നവന്റെ വ്യഥകളുടെ കഥയാണ് "പുറപ്പാടിന്റെ പുസ്തകം". 


പോട്ടത്തുരുത്ത് എന്നൊരു നാടും അവിടുത്തെ കുറെ മനുഷ്യരുടെ കഥയുമാണ് പറയുന്നത് ഇതിൽ..  കഥയിൽ ആദ്യം മുതൽ അവസാനം വരെ അരങ്ങു നിറഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്നത് ഒന്ന് മാത്രം.. മരണം..

എനിക്ക് വി ജെ ജയിംസിന്റെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വളരെയേറെ ഇഷ്ടമാണ്. ഈ നോവലും നല്ലതു തന്നെ, എന്നാൽ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്ത വിഷയം ഇത്തരത്തിലായതു കൊണ്ട് ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുണ്ടായി. അത് വായനയുടെ ഒഴുക്കിനെയും ബാധിച്ചു. അല്പം റീഡിങ് ബ്ലോക്കും ഉണ്ടായി.

The novel is the result is many years of work. It shows in the language but somehow it seems not natural when you read it. At least in places. Almost of all the characters in the novel are dying at some points and there is no ray of hope. Some characters appear, after some pages they die. It quite depressing in that way.

I am literally obsessed with books based in Kerala or translated from Malayalam because of the simple fact that they come with such picturesque settings and a spectrum of unforgettable characters. I am very thankful that this book, written almost 25 years ago, was translated recently so that I could get the opportunity to read it.

Set in Potta Thuruthu, a village in the backwaters of Kochi, the book starts with Kunjooty’s desire to reach the mountains beyond his town to join his ancestors. He gets inspired by the tales of the firebird narrated by his Valli Ammachi and makes it his mission to write the book of Exodus based on his village and its people. But Potta Thuruthu is a land of curse - just like Macondo in Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Kunjooty also lives with a secret that no one knows about and wonders why his lineage and village were cursed forever. There are so many things happening in the book - there is passion for writing, lust and romance, hatred and jealousy, love and loss, secrets and obsessions, and mysteries and magic.

The only drawback I had was that Kunjooty’s mother, Eli, was seemingly a strong character initially, but she reappeared only at the end of the book. I was very much looking forward to her characterisation, but she did not even land among the secondary characters. Also, there were way too many deaths that I could keep a count of. Every character I liked ended up dying almost immediately, and it was so disheartening.

Though I liked the book otherwise, I couldn’t ignore its close similarity to One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The likeness was so glaring for me not to see it, starting from Potta Thuruthu’s Valliamachi’s similarity to the matriarch of Macondo - Ursula to the similar fate of both villages and their people, the strange mix of alternate universes in the current scenarios and people with secrets who end up getting their village accursed. However, one can still read it because it is much simplified compared to the other.

Review of The Book of Exodus
The Book of Exodus by V.J. James.

The Book of Exodus is a fascinating fusion of magical spiritualism and existential surrealism. It's a novel that, when read for a second time, first in Malayalam and then in English, offers an experience that is genuinely extraordinary and fills me with unparalleled ecstasy.
The story unfolds with life's simple yet complex realities in a village isolated as an atoll surrounded by backwaters and a nameless river. Here, the struggle for existence represents authenticity and starkness. The protagonist, Kunjooty, is a powerful embodiment of humanity's contradictory facets: desires, reminiscences, sorrows, vanity, obsessions, disenchantment, and despair. The reader is drawn into his journey, sharing their experiences, struggles, tears, and quest for the meaning of life throughout the book. The characters' angst, be it of Koppan, Zavarias, Chathutty, Unnicheera, Chiriyankan, Anita, Ezhuthassan, and Valiyammachi, smell the petrichor of the isle.
The author has created an internally dynamic, eternally meaningful, and supremely contextual novel, a classic par excellence. The serendipity the reader confronts on every page is not just stupefying but also intriguing and captivating. The emotions created are abstemious and intransigent yet stunning, and the reader is baffled by the vigour of ideas, radiance of thoughts, and penetrating vision. But life is inexplicably intertwined with myths, legends, magic and faith. Divinity permeates every page of this novel.
The English translation of Ministhy S is wondrously beautiful, eloquently chiselled, and close to the original. It sparkles with life and reads like a poem. Her work is a testament to the art of translation, and she deserves kudos for her skill and dedication.

Still cannot escape the hangover of reading this book. It is kind of haunting me . The Melancholic drama that unfolded through poetic words of the author left me speechless and numb with emotions  . I would rate this even better than Kasak . such is the power of images that cling on . Don’t know why this work is not talked about much . It is much better than many other overrated works in Malayalam literature . Having read at least one book of most of the prominent writes in Malayalam I can very well say that ,author – V J James – is the future of Malayalam literature. I hope this unparalleled work will get better acclaim in days to come . Kudos…I felt privileged to have read this.

അടിമുടി ഡിപ്രഷൻ ആണീ പുസ്തകം. മരണവും രോഗവും നിരാശയും അനിശ്ചിതത്വവും അസ്തിത്വ ദുഖവും മായവാദവും അങ്ങനെയങ്ങനെ... 1986ൽ എഴുതിയ ആത്മകഥാംശമുള്ള നോവൽ പ്രകാശിതം ആകുന്നതു 1999ൽ ആണ്.

എവിടൊക്കെയോ മുകുന്ദനെയും എംടിയെയും ഒക്കെ ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു പാത്ര സൃഷ്ടികൾ.

മനസിനെ വല്ലാതെ ഉലച്ച ഒരു നോവല്‍. നമ്മള്‍ ദിവസവും പലരെയും കാണുന്നു. സംസാരിക്കുന്നു പക്ഷെ അവരുടെ മനസിലെ സംഹര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ പലപ്പോഴും അഗാധമായി അറിയുന്നില്ല. ഇതില്‍ അഗാധമായി ഇറങ്ങിചെല്ലുംപോള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന മനുഷ്യരുടെ മാനസിക സംഹര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ അറിയാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നു
