LOVERS AT HEART
SILVER MEDAL WINNER, Readers’ Favorite Awards, Contemporary Romance

Handsome, wealthy resort owner Treat Braden is used to getting what he wants. When Max Armstrong walked into his life six months earlier, he saw right through the efficient and capable façade she wore like a shield, to the sweet, sensual woman who lay beneath. She sparked an unfamiliar desire in him for more than a one-night stand, leaving his heart reeling and his blood boiling. But one mistake caused her to turn away, and now, after six months of longing for the one woman he cannot have, he’s going home to try to forget her all together.

Max Armstrong has a successful career, a comfortable lifestyle, and she’s never needed a man to help her find her way–until Treat Braden caught her attention at a wedding in Nassau, causing a surge of emotions too reminiscent of the painful past she’d spent years trying to forget. Max will do anything to avoid reliving that pain–including forgoing her toe-curling, heart-pounding desire for Treat.

When a chance encounter turns into a night of intense passion, Treat realizes that the mistake he made six months earlier may cause him to lose Max completely. He will do everything within his power to win her heart forever–and Max is forced to face her hurtful past head on for the man she cannot help but love.

DESTINED FOR LOVE
BRONZE MEDAL WINNER, Readers’ Favorite Awards, Romance Sizzle

Love hot cowboys?
Rex Braden is wealthy, hard working, and fiercely loyal. Sweat at his brow, he works the family ranch by day, then kicks back at night with part time lovers who require nothing more than his physical presence a few times each week. But that was before. Before Jade Johnson, the daughter of the man his father has been feuding with for over forty years, moves back into town.

After ditching a horrific relationship–and her veterinary practice in the process–Jade Johnson returns to the safety of her small hometown and finally finds her footing. That is…until her horse is injured and Rex Braden comes to her rescue. The last thing she needs is a bull-headed, too-handsome-for-his-own-good Braden complicating her life.

Despite the angry family history, sparks fly between Rex and Jade, and attitudes follow. Fifteen years of stifled, forbidden love stirs a surge of passion too strong for either to deny–and the rebel in each of them rears its powerful head. Loyalties are tested, and relationships are strained. Rex and Jade are about to find out if true love really can conquer all.

You know it’s funny but reading this series some of the Braden siblings stories I thought I’d most enjoy I found a little disappointing and yet some of the ones I thought I’d least enjoy I loved. This was my first time reading Ms. Melissa Foster’s work and one thing I have to say as now a very seasoned reader of modern romance novels by many authors, is her books seem even more geared towards her female audience than the many other modern romance novelist I’ve read even acknowledging the entire genre is geared towards a female audience. So I’m sure some of the things I didn’t particularly enjoy as a man her female readers probably did. I’ve already written individual reviews on the first 3 books so I’m not going to be too specific in my critique of the series here. I’ll try to stick mostly with generalities.
One thing I’ve noticed throughout this series is that while the Braden men (and lone sister Savannah) seem to be in a rush to fall in love and (with the exception of Rex) get engaged, only one seemed to be in any hurry to march down the aisle and seal the deal. Maybe I’m just old fashioned but when you’re as in love as the couples in this series seem to be, you get engaged and after a short engagement you get married. The sex scenes are always very explicit as well as steamy as her heroines are not shy in the bedroom (or anywhere else), so if you find graphic sex scenes in your romance novels a negative, I’d suggest you avoid her books.
Also, the willingness of the all the extremely successful Braden siblings to sacrifice their career for love is a major theme in this series and is also often the last stumbling block to their H.E.A. Of course, none of them ends up having to do so, but the willingness to make that sacrifice to be with their heart’s desire is a key issue in their stories.
Hal Braden the family patriarch who lost his wife and mother of his six children to cancer young, is the perfect father figure, wise, patient and supportive. Someone to greatly admire other than his out of character lapse of judgement in his relationship with his former childhood friend which all came out in the second book, Destined to Love Rex and Jade’s story.
Treat Braden the oldest sibling and business mogul owns several exotic resorts. To be honest I liked him more as the protective, wise older brother in the rest of the series than I did in his own book. I did like his love Max Armstrong but her constant waffling over her commitment to the relationship during their story was somewhat off-putting.
Rex Braden the third oldest sibling who stayed home to help his father run the family’s horse farm was a character I had trouble getting into but once he got his head out of his butt in regard to Jade Johnson I really enjoyed his character. I could easily see myself being friends with him. Absolutely loved Jade. She was beautiful, smart, feisty and a woman not afraid of her sexual desires. Still not sure why it took him forever to finally marry the girl?
Dane Braden the second oldest and a marine biologist set on saving the world’s sharks, I had a difficult time with. Like all the Braden’s he was a good man, honest and loyal to a fault, and it was obvious he loved Lacy. But I found his thinking that his career was so important but didn’t hesitate to ask Lacy to give up hers showed a lack of respect for her and what she did and made him seem like an egotistical ass. I thought Lacy Snow was a real sweetheart and a great mix between innocent and vulnerable and yet still very much a woman in her sexual prime. I thought her concerns over the problems their relationship faced were very realistic.
Savannah Braden the middle child, the high-powered entertainment industry lawyer. I loved Savannah in all of her brothers books and really looked forward to her book until I read it. She went from the spunky, strong outspoken sister to a whiney and insecure woman who stayed in a relationship with a man who was repeatedly unfaithful to her far too long. I was a bit surprised at how quickly she was willing to hook up with Jack and even more surprised at how quickly she was wiling to say those three little words to him. And even though I came over the course of the series to feel like Savannah was a daughter or little sister to me, I could accept she was a mature sexual woman. Still, Ms. Foster’s decision to kink up Savannah’s sex life as if she wanted to reprise the role of some porn star in the bedroom (or the forest) with Jack, I found a little upsetting. Maybe Ms. Foster felt she had to up her game as the steamy scenes in the previous books were starting to sound a little redundant? Also, her book seemed to be as much or more focused on Jack overcoming his baggage as it was about Savannah and their relationship. I still love the Savannah character but I didn’t think this book put her in the most flattering light in trying to flesh out her character. But maybe women will see it differently? Jack was a great character even if I had trouble buying into why he felt so over the top responsible for his wife’s death. He was a good man who was completely open about his feelings for Savannah and his emotional struggles right from the start of their relationship.
Josh the second youngest, highly successful fashion designer. To be honest I never expected to be able to get into a story where the hero was such a mega metro-sexual even though Ms. Foster did her best to macho him up while remaining true to his character. But it wasn’t Josh’s occupation of designing women’s clothes that turned me off. It was his lack of faith in Riley Banks at crunch time, the woman he declared he was so in love with. That and his concerns about what being loyal to her would cost his career while never considering what pursuing her and having a relationship with her while she worked for him would do to hers. I did love Riley, the downhome, sassy country girl with the great talent for designing clothing. Oh, and if you read their wedding novella (which was fun because it caught us up to what all the siblings were doing in their lives) you find out Josh couldn’t bother to make the time to actually marry Riley until several years after rushing to ask her to marry him. How was it JRBD (Josh. Riley Braden Designs) when she wasn’t actually a Braden until several years later? The final chapters were very romantic and Josh sort of redeemed himself but his moments of doubt about Riley’s integrity earlier left a bad taste in my mouth.
Hugh Braden the race car driver. Hugh’s character in the early books as a secondary character, as the self-absorbed youngest Braden was someone I thought I wouldn’t like. But ultimately the subject of the last book in the series may be my favorite Braden. Once he grew up and decided what he wanted out of life he was just the perfect guy, honest, loving, giving, caring and determined to win Bree’s heart. I couldn’t help but love Brianna the beautiful hard working single mom and her adorable daughter Layla. Or her friends Kat her co-worker BFF and Mack her boss and his family for that matter. Of course she had issues to work through after her father abandoned her and her mother, Layla’s father wanted nothing to do with them when she discovered she was pregnant and given Hugh’s sexual history and celebrity were legitimate issues for her to overcome.
All in all this was a solid series. I don’t regret the money I spent or the time I invested in reading it. I don’t know that I cared for it or the author enough to strongly recommend it or to continue on with all of the off-shoot series that fall under her Love in Bloom umbrella series? But again there was something about the writing that I think will speak much more to women readers than it did to me so I don’t want to discourage others from reading the series.
