Vom Haben zum Sein. Wege und Irrwege der Selbsterfahrung: The Art of Being

Viele Leser des Buches "Haben oder Sein" haben sich gefragt, was jeder Einzelne selbst tun kann, um von einer Orientierung am Haben zu einer am Sein zu kommen. Tatsächlich hatte Fromm zu dieser Frage ein Manuskript von über 120 Seiten geschrieben. Es trug die Überschrift „Schritte zum Sein“ (Steps to Being) und sollte in "Haben oder Sein" veröffentlicht werden. Kurz vor der Drucklegung entschied Fromm, dieses Kapitel zugunsten von Vorschlägen zu wirtschaftlichen, politischen, gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Veränderungen wieder herauszunehmen.

Schließlich wurde es 1989 als erste nachgelassene Schrift veröffentlicht, mit dem Titel Vom "Haben zum Sein" neu aufgelegt und in mehr als 20 Sprachen übersetzt. So sehr die Orientierung am Haben in den strukturellen Gegebenheiten der heutigen Industriekultur wurzelt, so sehr geht es bei ihrer Überwindung doch darum, die psychischen, geistigen und körperlichen Eigenkräfte und Selbstbestimmungsmöglichkeiten des Menschen wieder zur Entdeckung zu bringen. Und genau davon handelt dieses Buch.

About the author

Erich Fromm, Ph.D. (Sociology, University of Heidelberg, 1922) was a German-American social psychologist, psychoanalyst, sociologist, humanistic philosopher, and democratic socialist. He was a German Jew who fled the Nazi regime and settled in the United States. He was one of the founders of The William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychology in New York City and was associated with the Frankfurt School of critical theory.

Fromm explored the interaction between psychology and society, and held various professorships in psychology in the U.S. and Mexico in the mid-20th century.

Fromm's theory is a rather unique blend of Freud and Marx. Freud, of course, emphasized the unconscious, biological drives, repression, and so on. In other words, Freud postulated that our characters were determined by biology. Marx, on the other hand, saw people as determined by their society, and most especially by their economic systems.

I approached this work with trepidation. My shuddering become more pronounced when Fromm started talking about mediation and self-awareness and Buddhism. “Oh dear,” I thought, “We’re in for one of those books.”

That it wasn’t ‘one of those books’ really surprised and delighted me. My mum is always at me to take up meditation. I’ve, on occasion, even gone to such places and then they talk to me about Chakras and my spiritual self and other rot and nonsense and a deep depression engulfs my soul. The effect is that I come away more stressed then I went in. Having some idiot telling me to focus on my third eye or visualise my Buddha nature or whatever it is they go on about really just makes me want to run away screaming – with or without my inner child. So, when Fromm started talking about Buddha and meditation I thought this would be a very short read.

What a delight to have someone talk about meditation without ‘spiritualism’ and giving practical, no nonsense advice on how and why one ought to do it. One of his major concerns is that as a society we have forgotten how to focus, how to concentrate on things. One of his ‘modes of meditating’ is to sit quietly looking at a coin until you are able to see it in detail when you close your eyes. And not in the sense of ‘The Secret’ – visualising as the path to having, but in the sense that quiet, focused attention in which intrusive thoughts are repressed (or perhaps banished is a better word). The point is to feel relaxed and invigorated, rather than ‘at one with the cosmic essence’.

There is a sense in which Fromm suggests this type of mediation as a stepping stone towards greater self-awareness. This greater self-awareness comes via therapy. I’ve always been a bit less than polite when it comes to most ‘therapy’. I have been known to refer at times to ‘money for jam’ or ‘the blind leading the blind’. I guess this is mostly because I see ‘therapists’ as serving the role of secular Priests. When someone close to you dies or your relationship ends you go to a therapist right up until the time when you can’t afford to talk with them anymore. The therapist begins by telling you they can’t cure you (only you can cure you) and anyway, one of the things you learn fairly quickly ought to be that mostly what is wrong with you is called ‘life’ and the alternative is somewhat less than appealing. So eventually you move on, that little bit poorer, that little bit more cynical about the ways of the world and the therapist buys a new Jaguar. A win – win situation if there ever was one.

This isn’t quite the therapy that Fromm envisages. For Fromm the key division, the ‘concrete universal contradiction’ in Hegelian language, is between ‘being’ and ‘having’. Capitalist society is obsessed with ‘having’. It is materialist is the worst possible sense of the term. For those who are obsessed with having – the most perfect realisation of such a person is the miser. The miser makes all possessions fetishes. They are coveted, desired and accumulated not for their use, but for his (I assume no one will complain about my use of sexist language in this context) ability to horde them. To Fromm this really is a half-life – but it is remarkable how many people in our glorious capitalist society derive their entire sense of self-worth in precisely this ‘having’ way. Yes, that includes both the women dressed in their ‘born to shop’ t-shirts and the men cruising about town in their Hummers (in the immortal words of Dylan Moran – “Just how small would your penis have to be?”).

The therapy that Fromm recommends – even if you can’t afford to get someone to help you with it – is one which gets you to focus on your motivations for engaging in the types of behaviour you engage in. I’m giving away the ending of the book here – I ought to put a spoiler alert on this one – but for Fromm the key to being a grown-up type person (compared to what most of us tend to be most of the time) is to be someone who is much more concerned with ‘being’ than ‘having’.

He accepts Marx’s view on the alienation of modern labour completely – at least, that is how it seemed to me. Work becomes increasingly de-skilled and meaningless to the person performing it – and to all those associated with it, including the capitalist. As such, people simply cannot (at least, the vast majority of people cannot) derived any meaning from their labour.

This is the most interesting connection that Fromm (for me) makes between Marxism and Buddhism – that both see true liberation in our being truly aware and engaged and present in the moment (the past doesn’t exist, the future doesn’t exist – there is only the eternally present). For Buddhism this is the notion that if you are doing anything you should be doing that thing – focused on doing that thing. When you make tea you are focused on making tea. It is this conscious, focused attention to being that gives life its value and meaning. For Marx modern industrial life strips much of human activity of its meaning and value. He too wants to move toward unalienated labour – labour that is imbued with the worth of the labourer’s love and focused attention. For Marx too, life is a verb, rather than an ever expanding collection of nouns.

Fromm views modern consumerism is a mistake, if not a hideous cancerous growth, and it can best be overcome by us learning to move from the obsession which consumerism instils in us that we are what we possess.

He has an interesting take on the argument about greed too – the argument often used so as to present alternatives to capitalism as utopian or against human nature. This has always seemed a problem to me. People often do seem to be essentially greedy, and all ‘better societies’ do seem to require some sort of overcoming of this essentially ‘natural’ human greed. I would need to read this section again – but I think Fromm’s argument is that to want more than you can productively use is foolish as it essentially makes no sense. It is like that last part of Chinatown when Nicholson asks why the rich man wants more – given he already has all he could possibly use, given he can’t eat any better, live in any more houses, wear any more clothes. The reason is that we have so constructed our self-worth to be a function of possessions that even this question itself seems to be absurd to us.

But if we were to move our construction of our self-worth away from the essentially ridiculous idea that 'what we have is what we are' to 'what what we do is what we are' – that is, from having to being – then greed too would become increasingly foolish.

I found this book utterly fascinating and well worth the read. So much so that I will be reading more Fromm.

Erich Fromm's The Art of Being offers a psychological and humanist critique of meditation, mindfulness practices and other methods we use to live a more authentic life. As might be apparent from the quote above, Fromm despises those who pedal quick fixes to self-actualization. Effort is required. Moreover, Fromm believes that we each need to ask ourselves what the purpose of our life is going to be, and then work from there.

In doing so, Fromm doesn't advocate a single practice, but does spend quite a bit of time exploring Buddhist practices and ways to cultivate stillness and concentration. One of the single largest barriers he sees in our not achieving our purpose is an unwillingness to accept failure and move on.

Much of the final third of the book is devoted to an investigation of functional property versus a passive consumption of commodities that gets in the way of achieving an authentic self. In other words, stuff gets in the way. This attitude toward possessions makes sense from Fromm, but he spends a lot of time (as in way too much time) hammering this home. Overall, though, this was an interesting study. I enjoyed a psychological perspective on mindfulness, and Fromm's point about possessions that we use to falsely endow us with individuality is well taken, but the argument could have concluded sooner. 3.5 stars

This book contained a line, something like "most conversations are monologues," that has changed my behavior. With that line I realized how frequently I don't fully listen, am not fully present, how often I just want to hear myself speak rather than really connect. There's something powerful about being present.

من الكتب التي أعتزّ بقرائتها هي كتب فروم، يقول فروم الكثير في ستة فصول تتفاوت بين المثيرة برؤية مصيرية و الجديدة وبين المطروقة في كتابه الآخر الذي قرأته الشهر الفائت ( الإنسان بين المظهر و الجوهر) يحدد خطوات إدراك الوجود ويصنفه ك فن من خلال هذه الأبواب الستة، إدراكك الذاتي للوجود يقودك للتحرر الداخلي الذي سيطلعك على تفاصيله و لا تستهن بخبرته فأربعون عام كمحلل نفسي تجعل المرء يساير الحقيقة ويتتبع خطاها مهما تلوت في الخطى و مسألة اختراقه لها و مطابقة خطاه لخطاها تغدو مسألة وقت يكسب المرء دقائق تأخيره مهما كان عددها.

إن المثال الآخر على التقييم المشوه لأنشطة الإنسان المعاصر العقلية هو فن القراءة و الكتابة، يعتقد الإنسان المعاصر أن اتقان هذا الفن دليل لا شك فيه على التطور، إن اعظم الجهود المبذولة لمحو الأمية كما لو انها علامة لمرض عقلي، إذ يقاس تطور الأمة- و بمعزل عن عدد السيارات فيها- بنسبة الأشخاص الذين بمقدورهم الكتابة و القراءة، إن هذه الآراء تتجاهل حقيقة ان الشعوب التي يقتصر عندها علم القراءة على فئات صغيرة من الكهنة و العلماء( الطلاب) او ربما لا يوجد فيها هذا الفن اطلاقًا، تمتلك ذاكرة استثنائية، الإنسان الحديث يفهم بضعوبة كيف أن نصوصا كامل. مثل الفيدا و النصوص البوذية و كتب العهد القديم و التقليد اليهودي الشفهي اللاحق الذي انتقل من جيل إلى جيل و لمئات السنين قبل ان يتم تدوينه! و على النقيض قد راقبت الناس مثل الفلاحين المكسيكيون الذين حتى لو كان بمقدورهم الكتابة، لكنهم لا يقومون بذلك بشكل متواصل، إن الذاكرة هنا جيدة بصورة مميزةلأنهم لا يدونون الأشياء و المعلومات.
بمقدور أي كان القيام بمثل هذه الملاحظات بنفسه، و حالما يكتب شيئا ما، فسيتوقف عن القيام بجهد، و هذا ما يتطلبه التذكر!"

Fromm defines “Being” as a mode of existence (MoE) where an individual's focus is on growing, loving, and advancing toward self-realization. In contrast, “Having” refers to a state where an individual relates to the world, including his occupation and his relationships with other people, in an acquisitive and controlling manner.

In Fromm’s view, there is an existential scale where “being” resides at one end and “having” resides at the other. At the one extreme are the altruists (Mahatma Gandhi, Frans de Waal, etc.) and at the other extreme sit the narcissists (Benito Mussolini, Donald Trump, etc.). The rest of us fall somewhere in between.

The State of Having/The Idolization and Hoarding of Wealth

When Fromm states, “The most detestable, dishonest, unscrupulous and stupid man can be brought to honor with money,” he echoes Marx…

“I am ugly, but I can buy for myself the most beautiful of women. Therefore I am not ugly, for the effect of ugliness - its deterrent power - is nullified by money. I, in my character as an individual, am lame, but money furnishes me with twenty-four feet. Therefore I am not lame. I am bad, dishonest, unscrupulous, stupid; but money is honoured (sic), and therefore so is its possessor. Money is the supreme good, therefore its possessor is good. Money, besides, saves me the trouble of being dishonest: I am therefore presumed honest. I am stupid, but money is the real mind…” ~Karl Marx

So, how do we move ourselves toward a better, more balanced state of being? I am so glad you asked! The first step, according to the book of Fromm, is seeing ourselves (and those in our sphere of awareness) for what we really are.

“…we are influenced by the idea that increased schooling is commensurate with increased intellectual and artistic activity, but this is by no means so. Our education is not conducive to increased thinking or the development of active imagination. The average man today thinks very little for himself. He remembers data as presented by the schools and the mass media. He knows practically nothing of what he knows by his own observing or thinking… nor does modern man, including the educated groups, think about religious, philosophical or even political problems. He ordinarily adopts one or the other of the many clichés offered him by political or religious books or speakers, but the conclusions are not arrived at as the result of active and penetrating thinking of his own. He chooses the cliché that appeals most to his own character and social class”

Once we acknowledge that many (most? all?) of our judgements and perceptions are not deduced from a critical analysis of our own doing, we can start to shift ourselves from assembly-line automatons to thinking, living, human beings.

The simple message to us all:

We have the potential to be so much more than what we are. Happiness is not something to be pursued. It is not a commodity obtained by material abundance or the domination of nature. Happiness is simply a state of being. It is where we are when we move beyond the paradigm of “I am what I have,” and come to know “I am what I am.”

I have wanted to read Erich Fromm’s books since some time. I am not sure if I started with the wrong book. I think the impact was far lower than hoped for, also because mindfulness theory has moved on considerably since the time Erich Fromm wrote this book.

The book starts with the fallouts of modern lifestyle – lack of concentration (that was regarded as a problem even then, now I suppose it is acute!) and stress. Fromm initially covers his impression of Transcendental Meditation popularized by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He admits he has not practised it and knows very little about it – but goes on to surprisingly say that he would regard it as being not effective. There is a discussion on other philosophies including Buddhism and more modern findings from psychoanalysis such as theories from Freud. The later parts cover aspects such as primitive vs civilized attitudes and functional vs dead property. Lot of this matter was conceptually interesting in the first reference to it, but the treatment was very dry.

Overall, while this might have been interesting at the time it was published, looking at it today, I find this material very dated, other than drawing very little on practical personal experience.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Raymond Todd, and I found the narration to be good.

والوجود ليس هو ما وقع، الوجود هو حقل الإمكانات الإنسانية ، هو كل ما يمكن أن يصيره الإنسان، هو كل ما يكون الإنسان قادراً عليه. إن الروائيين يرسمون خريطة الوجود باكتشافهم هذا الإمكان الإنساني أو ذاك. لكن، مرة أخرى : أن توجد، فهذا يعني " الوجود-في-العالم. يقول ميلان كونديرا .

يناقش فروم في هذا الكتاب معضلة الوجود الإنساني بطرح عدد من الأسئلة الضمنية؛ كيف يحيا الإنسان حياة سعيدة بعقل واعي مدرك ومتوازن بين رغباته الداخلية والنفسية و قوى الواقع الخارجي، بحيث لا يفقد كينونته ولا يغالي في افلات ذاته ولا يقع فريسة شهوة التملك. ومالذي يجعل الحياة ذات مغزى بالنسبة لنا؟ كيف يمكننا التحول من وضع وجود الوجود، الذي يسلب سعادتنا بشكل منهجي، إلى نمط الوجود؟ ماذا يعني السؤال عما إذا كان الوجود ملكية؟ كما تطرق إلى فكرة الحرية وتحقيقها من قبل الفرد. "ان حرية الانسان هي إمكانه الوجودي ببعديه: المعرفة والقدرة" بحسب تحليل هيدغر، فما هو غير مادي ليس الشيء ، إنما هو حالة الشيء، وحالة الوجود. من مثل الفراغ الزمان والمكان الأفعال والأحداث .

ناقش مفهوم الانسان عند ماركس وأثر العصر الصناعي في كينونة الفرد ( الذي بدأ في إعطاء الأولوية للمنتجات على الأشخاص والاستهلاك على الإبداع- والذي تجسد في بحثنا الأساسي عن المعنى والرفاهية .)
وكانت من بين القضايا المركزية التي طرحها فروم معنية فيما اذا كان الامتلاك يعزز الفعالية والحيوية لدى الفرد، أم يشل الفعالية ويعزز الكسل والخمول واللا إنتاجية. وأثر كل ذلك على معاني الإنسان الوجودية والذاتية. وهو ما يطرح عدة أسئلة حول الطبيعة البشرية.

يلاحظ فروم أن السلاسل الأكثر ضررًا التي تمنعنا من التحرر هما المادية التي تحركها الملكية في ثقافتنا وميولنا الذاتية الفردية تجاه النرجسية.
يكتب: إذا كان "الرفاه" - [يُعرّف على أنه] الأداء الجيد كشخص ، وليس كأداة - هو الهدف الأسمى لجهود الفرد ، فهناك طريقتان محددتان تؤديان إلى تحقيق هذا الهدف: اختراق نرجسية الفرد وكسره. من خلال هيكل الملكية لوجود المرء.
تعريف النرجسية حسب إيريش فروم : " النرجسية هي توجه يتم فيه توجيه كل اهتمام الفرد وشغفه إلى شخصه: جسد الفرد وعقله ومشاعره واهتماماته ... بالنسبة للشخص النرجسي ، يكون هو وما يهمه فقط حقيقيًا تمامًا ؛ ما هو خارج ، ما يهم الآخرين ، هو حقيقي فقط بالمعنى السطحي للإدراك ؛ وهذا يعني أنه حقيقي لحواس المرء ولعقله. لكنها ليست حقيقية بمعنى أعمق ، لشعورنا أو فهمنا. فهو في الحقيقة لا يدرك إلا ما هو في الخارج بقدر ما يؤثر عليه. ومن ثم ، فهو لا يحب ، ولا شفقة ، ولا حكم منطقي وموضوعي. قام الشخص النرجسي ببناء جدار غير مرئي حوله. إنه كل شيء ، العالم لا شيء. أو بالأحرى: هو العالم."

من أبرز مواضيع الكتاب :
-العلاج بالتحليل النفسي ووعي الذات ( مخاطره ، ونجاعته، ) يشير فروم إلى عدة مخاطر للتحليل النفسي من بينها " خطورة الاستذهان" ، عندما تقود العزلة المسيطرة من تجربة فعالة للمرء إلى مقاربة فكرية شبه مكتملة للإنسان نفسه ولبقية العالم.

-التحليل النفسي الذاتي، بين الإمكانية والمعوقات المنوطة بمدركات الفرد لذاته والعالم من حوله ، إضافة لمقدرته على إدراك ذاته بصراعاتها الداخلية، والمنطق غير الصوري وتجنب الوقوع في فخ التحيزات المعرفية. " أن يكون استكشاف اللاوعي للمرء جزءاً من التأمل."، والتحول من الوجود الذهني إلى الوجود المادي الملموس، كذا تجسير الهوة بين الذات والآخر لخلق فهم أفضل لأنفسنا وللواقع المعاش. والتحدي هنا مقدرة حضور الوعي الذاتي بمعزل عن الوعي الجمعي أو المشترك لما له أثر في فكر وتصور الفرد عن ذاته والعالم من حوله" استكشاف الأعماق ، وعقله اللاواعي.". مع التشكيك في أفكار الوعي، نواياه، وقيمه، كما يشرح فرويد أنها غالباً ما تكون أشكال مقاومة لإخفاء الحقيقية الداخلية. لذلك يفضل ممارسة هذا النوع من التحليل مع محلل نفسي قدير.

فن الوجود – إريك فروم

يمكنني القول عن تجربة مع كتب فروم، إن فكر فروم واحد.. ويتكرر في أكثر من كتاب.. ولكنه يضع لنا في كل مرة موضوعاً واحداً تحت عدسة مكبرة تكثف لنا الحديث عن الموضوع كي تتضح الصورة أو الفكرة بشكل أكبر.

وهنا، نلاحظ أن كتابه هذا أشمل من كتابه الآخر؛ الإنسان بين الجوهر والمظهر رغم أن هذا يتحدث ضمن ما يتحدث عنه عن التملك والكينونة، بيد أنه هنا، يتحدث عنهما في سياق حديثه عن مشكلات الوجود الإنساني عموماً.

ينقسم الكتاب إلى 17 فصلاً، خصص كل فصل لمعالجة موضوع وجودي؛ عن فن الوجود، الكذبة الكبرى، حديث تافه، لا جهد لا ألم، مناهضة السلطوية، الرغبة بالشيء، اليقظة، الإدراك، التركيز، التأمل، التحليل النفسي ووعي الذات، التحليل النفسي الذاتي، ثقافة التملك، عن فلسفة التملك، سيكولوجية التملك، من التملك إلى الكينونة المثلى.

وكما هو متوقع، يبدأ فروم كتابه هذا بأسئلة من أمثال: ما هو الهدف من الحياة ؟ وماذا تعني الحياة للإنسان ؟ ثم يجيب بأن هذه الأسئلة غير منطقية وقد لا تحتاج إلى جواب.. بقدر ما هي تحتاج إلى التعامل معها على أنها مسلمة. أنت تعيش، إذن فالأجدر أن تتساءل عن الكيفية التي تعيش فيها حياتك هذه لا غايتها. وهو هنا، يختلف بمراحل عظيمة جداً عن فيكتور فرانكل في كتاب "الإنسان يبحث عن المعنى". ألم أقل سابقاً بأن فروم يحسن الظن بالإنسان بشكل مبالغ فيه ؟ إنه يتجاهل ببساطة حاجة الإنسان لوجود غاية ما من وجوده. باعتبار أن ذلك ليس مهماً برأيه. وهذا لأن فروم قد وضع مسبقاً الحب الناضج كحل لمشكلة الإنفصال الوجودية للإنسان. وبالتالي، فإن الإنسان لدى فروم مكتفٍ بذاته وبذات من يحب عن البشرية جمعاء.. وعن التفكير في غاية وجوده.. إن الإنسان لدى فروم هو موجود وحسب. بينما إنسان فرانكل، يوجد الإنسان كي يبحث عن غاية ما له.. ومن ثم تكون مهمته في هذه الحياة هي تحقيق تلك الغاية أياً كانت.

ينتقل فروم بعد ذلك إلى الكذبة الكبرى وهي تحويل كل شيء إلى منتوج يتم استغلاله تجارياً.. حتى التحليل النفسي وغيرها تتحول إلى بضاعة يتم بيعها وشراؤها لتحقيق الكسب المادي وبهذه الطريقة يتم تفريغ حتى تلك الأشياء الأثمن من جوهرها. وبعدها إنتقل إلى الحديث عن الحديث التافه وهو برأيه أحد عوائق تعلم فن الوجود. ونلاحظ بشكل عام تأثر فروم بالبوذية والأديان الشرقية.. وهذا لا يتوقف على فروم فقط، بل على المجتمعات الغربية بعمومها ونجد المبرر لذلك في هذا الكتاب بالذات، حيث أن فروم في أكثر من موقع يركز على مادية المجتمعات الغربية وكيف أن هناك حاجة روحانية دائمة الوجود لدى الفرد الإنساني.. وبالتالي، يمكننا أن نتفهم لجوء هؤلاء الأفراد إلى البوذية والأديان الشرقية لتلبية هذه الحاجة.

يبدأ فروم بمعالجة ما يراه عوائق أمام الإنسان تمنعه من تعلم فن الوجود كما أشرت أعلاه إنتقالاً إلى التحليل النفسي، وكيفية أن تقوم بتحليل نفسي ذاتي بل وكيفية التدرب على ذلك.. وبعدها ينتقل إلى التملك ودوره في حياة الإنسان ونرى هنا، كيف أن فروم متأثر بالنظرة الماركسية في التملك حيث أنه يقول بأنها عادة مكتسبة وليست أصيلة في النفس الإنسانية على عكس الكينونة والتي يراها أصيلة في النفس. ونرى كذلك كيف أن فروم يتوسع في الحديث عن التملك وينتهي أخيراً في النقلة التي يريدها من التملك إلى الكينونة.. ونجد بأنه حيث ينتهي هذا الكتاب يبدأ موضوع كتابه الذي أشرت إليه بداية "الإنسان بين الجوهر والمظهر".

تكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب بأنه يشرح بشكل شامل نوعاً ما عموم فكر فروم.. ويصلح جداً بأن يكون مقدمة لبقية أعماله.

يعرض من طرفه آلية (التحليل النفسي الذاتي) كوسيلة شخصية لتحقيق هذه الغاية الإنسانية. مقدمًا ‏لفكرة فهم (احتياجات الإنسان) كسبيل لتحقيق غاية الحياة. ثمّ لعوائق تعلّم أيّ فن، وخطوات ‏التعلّم واكتساب المهارة. ويختم كتابه بالحديث عن التملّك والاستهلاك بشقيهما (الوظيفي وغير ‏الوظيفي) وأظنّ أنه بذلك يسلم قارئه لكتابه الآخر ( أن تملك أو تكون) وقد كتبت هذه الفصول ‏في ذات الوقت. وسيكون بإذن الله محطتي التالية في دراسة (فروم).‏

لن تعدم في أثناء قراءتك لفروم فوائد عدّة، أهمها أنك ستلتقي بذاتك (فهو يجيد بثّ المرايا في ‏كتاباته) وستكتشف بعضًا من دوافعك ودواخلك (فعدسته المكبرة متقنة الصنع وفعّالة) وستفهم ‏سلوك كثيرين من حولك (فكشاف المعرفة قويّ ومنير) ... وتلك –بظنّي- مكوّنات رئيسة في ‏صناعة الحكمة واكتسابها. ‏

I stumbled upon this book on accident. I had never heard of Erich Fromm before. At times I feel like fate is playing games with me when I find something that enlarges and enriches my perspectives on life. This was one of those books.

This is a treatise on the identity of man. He brings up Freudian and Marxian theories frequently in discussing the estrangement of modern man from themselves. The middle class feels the bulk of the estrangement as they try to pull off an incredibly difficult balance between a life of being and a life of having. Essentially the middle class falls primarily on the side of having, which is to say that their lives are defined by possessing things as opposed to that of being. The irony of possessing is that they become the possessed as their sense of self becomes something to "possess". This causes an unspeakable amount of anxiety because one feels as though their life is without much meaning, depth or purpose that they are just another replaceable cog in a machine. They are never able to completely pour themselves into something. The question "who am I?" torments them as they are unable to answer. Possibly one of the defining attributes of life in the middle is the acceptability of "mediocre", or just enough. The passionless life of going through the motions, living as mere survival.

As a child of the middle class myself, I have felt many of these infuriating feelings of estrangement from life. Often I have had the feeling of being a mere spectator of life and that has always driven me crazy. I hate defining myself by things outside of myself or even the idea of "defining" myself which in itself always feels like a lie. The inconsistency of the masks we wear and the misidentification with them has always made me uncomfortable. The person of being is a fully present person, they hold nothing in reserve. Wherever they are or whatever they are doing their whole being is present. No feelings of duplicity. There is a sublime honesty about them.

Bu eserse oldukça derinlikli açıklayıcı araştırmacı yanınızı tetikleyen aynı zamanda daha önceki felsefi ve psikolojik bilgilerinizi bir daha gözden geçirmenizi sağlıyor tabiki hepimizin bu benim doğrum dediği mutlaka vardır.Yazarın katılmadığım tek yanı Jung konusunda biraz eleştirisel yaklaşımı.Bence herkesin okuması gerekir diyeceğim eserlerden yada dinleyin!

قرائتي الثانية الكاملة لإيريك فروم
واضح تماما رد فعل إيريك فروم على القيم الاستهلاكية المادية التي فرضها المجتمع الاستهلاكي المعاصر.
سمة اخرى لأيريك فروم هي التعقيد في أسلوبه والفلسفة المعمقة التي لم تصل بعد الى حد التبسيط
الكتاب عبارة عن فصول انتزعها الكاتب من كتابه التملك أو الكينونة قبل طباعته ولذلك ستجدون الكثير من النقاش حول هذه الفكرة
الفكرة العامة هي في توضيح كيف يكون وجودك معتمدا على كينونتك أكثر من اعتماده على ما تملك ويوضح الكاتب بداية بعض المعيقات في تعلم فن الوجود ثم ينتقل لنقاش بعض المفاهيم المرتبطة بفن الوجود ويؤكد الكاتب على فكرة التحليل النفسي الذاتي وأهميته في الوصول لوعي افضل وبالتالي وجود أفضل
كما يسهب في شرح فكرة التملك بشكل فلسفي ونفسي
الكتاب يحتوي على الكثير من النقاشات المهمة بغض النظر أن كنت اتفق مع الكاتب ام اخالفه الراي في بعضها
هناك مسألتين رئيسيتين أحب أن أذكرهما
الأولى أن الكتاب ليس سهلا على الأشخاص الغير مطلعين على علم النفس بشكل عام وخاصة علم النفس التحليلي الذي كان رائده فرويد, اذ يتسم أسلوب إيريك فروم بالتعقيد والفلسفة.
الثانية: من وجهة نظري أرى ان الكتاب قديم المعلومات قليلا فالتحليل النفسي الذاتي لم يعد هو الاساس المطلق في التغيير ناهيك عن كونه لم يعد اساسا حتى في العلاج النفسي
شخصيا أرى ان التحليل النفسي الذاتي ضروري وركيزة اساسية في التغيير ولكن ليس بالتعقيد او بالطريقة التي يشير اليها الكاتب وانا من انصار التغيير السلوكي الذي تحدث عنه كثير من علماء النفس المعاصرين من أمثال ويلسون
لن أخوض هنا في تفاصيل التحليل النفسي الذاتي او العلاج السلوكي لان ذلك سيحتاج الى مقالة منفصلة
لكن باختصار أقول كن واع لذاتك وحاول فهمها لكن بتبسيط وليس بتعقيد والاهم ان تكون محتفظ بنظرة ايجابية تجاهها خلال هذا الوعي فالنظرة الايجابية للذات ربما اهم من التحليل نفسه
موضوع اخر كان غاية في الاهمية تحدث عنه الكاتب وهو وهم التغيير السريع بدون جهد تحت مسميات مختلفة وهذا ما حقيقة وقعت فيه شخصيا في مرحلة سابقة ولكن الحمد لله اليوم تنبهت له وتجاوزته
باختصار هذا كتاب معقد لكن فيه أفكار مهمة جدا الا انه وفي مجال فن الوجود ربما يوجد احدث منه

I've often said that the Buddha was an early psychologist. Erich Fromm's Art of Being demonstrates the reverse is also true: psychology continues to learn from Buddhism. Fromm is a psychoanalyst and humanist who argues that psychological health, being (as opposed to having), is a consequence of both concentration and self-awareness.

Without effort and willingness to experience pain and anxiety, nobody grows, in fact nobody achieves anything worth achieving. (p. 62)

What are you afraid of? Life is scary and we should, in the normal state of affairs, experience many unpleasant things: pain, anxiety, depression, frustration, and anger. What would life be like without these feelings – or if we avoided the things associated with these feelings? Not anything that I want to live with. I don't want the people in my life to die, but I also don't want to miss a minute of my time with them. I want to recognize, be outraged by, and change the injustices I see.

I'm not saying we should wallow in dysphoria; we should also be open to and feel compassion, awe, joy. Being means being open to the whole range of feelings. It means being wise and choiceful, rather than passively floating through life.

A person who has not been completely alienated, who has remained sensitive and able to feel, who has not lost the sense of dignity, who is not yet “for sale,” who can still suffer over the suffering of others, who has not acquired fully the having mode of existence—briefly, a person who has remained a person and not become a thing—cannot help feeling lonely, powerless, isolated in present-day society. He cannot help doubting himself and his own convictions, if not his sanity. He cannot help suffering, even though he can experience moments of joy and clarity that are absent in the life of his “normal” contemporaries. Not rarely will he suffer from a neurosis that results from the situation of a sane man living in an insane society, rather than that of the more conventional neurosis of a sick man trying to adapt himself to a sick society. This is a short book comprised from chapters cut from other books. It is not an easy read (at least on a bike, where I read it), but full of gems.

يبحث فروم هنا ويناقش السبل المزيفة لإدراك الذات وتحقيق وجودها ومسائل تتناول كيفيات وحيثيات عصر الإنسان السبراني وصولاً بعد ذلك إلى أفكار وطرق مقترحة في اتجاه الوجود وتحقيق إدراك الذات، كذلك يعرض منهجية للتحليل الذاتي كنوع من التطبيق العملي للتحليل النفسي. ربما بشكل عام أسلوب الكتاب فيه بعض الصعوبة وطرحه دسم لكن فيه إضاءات مفيدة وأفكار وتحليلات قيّمة، استفدت جداً خاصة في الفصلين الثالث والرابع.

إن القدرة على تحمّل الفشل "دون عقلنته " تماماً مثل المرور بمراحل التعلم الأخرى، ذات أهمية قصوى.

كلما تعاظم الشعور بالعجز وبنقص الإرادة الأصيلة كلما تنامى الخضوع أو الرغبة المهووسة بإرضاء نزوة المرء والإصرار على الاختيار. الاختيار في النزوة يتقدمه تساؤل "لماذا لا أفعل؟" وليس "لماذا أفعل؟"

إن النزوع باتجاه الوجود يعني دائماً أن هدف المرء في الحياة ينحو إلى قوى المرء النفسية -الحب والمنطق والنشاطات الفعالة والتي تنمو وتتزايد فقط بالدرجة التي تمارس بها وتتم مشاركتها مع الآخرين ولا يمكن أن تستهلك أو تشترى أو تمتلك-، حيث يدرك المرء ويطّلع على ويستوعب حقيقة أن ما هو مجهول وغريب في ذاته وفي العالم الخارجي هو مجرد خصائص لذاته، وبمعرفته هذه فإن المرء يحصل على علاقة أعظم وأكثر شمولية مع نفسه ومع محيطه.

The short book was out to take of the introduction to another book, but works perfectly well on its own. An overview of psychoanalysis philosophy and comparative religion. It’s a real thought-provoked. I will definitely read this again and again.

"If other people do not understand our behavior, so what? Their request that we must only do what they understand is an attempt to dictate to us... Mostly they resent our freedom and courage to be ourselves. We owe nobody an explanation or an accounting."

There were some great pithy take-aways in this book. I also really enjoyed Fromm's talk about mindfulness, decades before it was "jargonized" in the West.

First half of the book was the best - broader in scope. Fromm was a prolific writer and my library has several of his books available as ebooks, so I plan to visit more of his work.

Erich Fromm’un psikoloji okurken zorunlu tutulmadığına inanamıyorum. Gerçekten inanamıyorum.

Sahip olmak ya da olmak ayrımını terapinin, meditasyonun, yabancılaşmanın, ilkelliğin, modernliğin—kısacası her şeyin tam göbeğine öyle bir yerleştiriyor ki… Zamanının çok ötesinde. Neoliberalizme geçmeden bunları yazmış olması karşısında aklım şaşıyor.

Terapiye dair eleştirileri… Sanki yıllardır içimde tuttuklarımı, yumru gibi birikenleri bir ipin ucundan tutup kelimelere dökmüş. Harika bir kitap. Sahip Olmak ya da Olmak’tan önce ilk bu kitap okunabilir.

Mütevazılık aşısı gibi bir kitap.

Kendine iyi gelmek isteyen herkes okumalı.

استمتعت بقرائته
كما تحدث عن الفرق بين الإنسان البدائي والإنسان المعاصر
وكيف أن الانسان البدائي يستخدم كافة ملكاته التي وهبها الله اياها في العيش والتعامل
بينما الإنسان المعاصر يعتمد بالكلية على الآلات والأجهزة والطرق السهلة للعيش
يختتم الكتاب بقوله:

الإدراك والإرادة والممارسة وتحمل الخوف وتحمل التجربة الجديدة جميعها ضروريات لنجاح تحول الفرد .

وفي حالة تملك الوجود فإن شعار المرء هو " أنا أساوي ما أملك" ولكن بعد عملية التحول يصبح شعاره: " أنا أساوي ما أعمل " بمعنى النشاط المقبول أو ببساطة " أنا أكون ما أنا عليه"

فن الوجود

ضمن هذه المعالجة في فن الوجود كانت لفروم معالجة شبيهة بها في كتابه " الانسان بين الجوهر والمظهر " وخلاصته ان على الانسان ان يكف عن فعل الاستحواذ الذي يمارسه مع الأشياء ولا بد له من ان يعيش الكينونة أي نزعة الفعل .
السؤال الذي يسأله فروم في هذا الكتاب هو : ما معنى ان يكون لنا رغبة في الحياة ؟ على انه لا يمنع من الرغبة في الحياة الا المشاعر التي تكون أكبر من هذه الرغبة كما أشار الى ذلك دوستويفسكي في رواية الشيطان فقد حلل الانتحار بطريقة مختلفة بل تُنبئ عن التفكير العكسي عند دوستويفسكي فقال : ان الانتحار قوة في الانسان لإنهاء وجوده مع علمه بالمجهول المتجه له فهو قرار قوي يحتاج إرادة قوية .
يبدو ان فروم متأثر أو لنقل بأنه يستأنس بالنظرية الداروينية في معظم آراءه خصوصا مفهوم الانتقاء الطبيعي حيث يعتبر الانسان الباحث عن السعادة سوف يجد الظروف التي تساعده على بلوغ كماله الإنساني مثله كمثل النبات التي وان منعت عنها التربة والماء تكيّف نفسها للوصول لكمالها وإنتاج ثمرتها ، وهكذا كان جان جاك روسو يطرح نظريته في التربية على هدي الطبيعة المجربة .
ولكي يمارس الانسان فن الوجود يطرح فروم مجموعة أفكار يعتبرها البنية الاساسية لممارسة حياة معتبرة ، وأول هذه المقترحات ما يسميه الكذبة الكبرى وهو كل ما يفعله فعل الدعاية والإعلان ليكون الانسان على نمط محدد من الاستهلاك في كل المجالات سواء في السياسة او الفن والأدب ( ما يحدث حاليا من توجه الجيل الحديث للأدب الروائي قد لا يكون فعلا استرسالي فإذا ما كانت الرواية تختزن طاقة عاطفية كبيرة كما هو واضح فهل المجتمعات العربية في حاجة لهذه الطاقة خصوصا في هذه المرحلة أم هم بحاجة لتطوير قدراتهم العلمية والفكرية والتكنولوجية ليكونو في مصاف الدول المتقدمة .
وتتمثل الكذبة الكبرى في دعايات وورش ودورات تطوير الانسان وتحقيق الذات والكتب التي تروِّج لهذه المفاهيم وتكمن الكذبة في الوعد بالتغيير الجذري للشخصية والزيف يكمن في التسطيح العلمي لذلك يقول فروم " لابد ان يبنى الإيمان بالحياة وبالإنسان ذاته وبالآخرين على أساس صلب من الواقعية " .
ومن المقترحات لممارسة فن الحياة البعد عن الأحاديث التافه فالتفاهة تنتج من اللاحياة واللاستجابة والموت او اي اهتمام لا يتعلق بمهمة الانسان الاساسية ويمكن ان تكون المصاديق لكل ما هو تافه كثيرة في الحياة والمجتمعات تغرق كل يوم فيما هو تافه ، السيارات ، السفر ، الموضة والكثير .
ويجد فروم ان عبارة لا جهد لا ألم مخربة لفن الوجود مثال التعليم في واقعنا من خلال تسهيل التعليم في المدارس الابتدائية والإعدادية والثانوية وكذلك الجامعة ، سهّل عليهم الأمر لا تجعله معقّد وهذا التسهيل أنتج لنا أنصاف متعلمين .
ومن العوائق ايضا لفن الحياة ممارسة السلطة السلبية والتي تحد من بذل الطاقات والإنتاج سواء كانت سلطة عليا او حتى أبوية او وظيفية وهكذا لممارسة حياة أكمل لابد من الرغبة في الشي كمحفز ذاتي ويتطلب ذلك كما أشار فروم اليقظة والتركيز فيما نفعله حيث إننا كثيرا ما نمارس فعلنا من غير تركيز فيه وفي حديثه عن التركيز يستحضر نقطة الإدراك ويشير الى الفارق بينه وبين الوعي واللاوعي فالإنسان حينما ينغمس في الاستهلاك مثلا قد يكون غير واعي لفعل الدعاية التي تقهره للاستهلاك وعبر إشارات معينه مثل قراءة كتاب في ضلال الاستهلاك يصبح عنده وعي ومن ثم اذا تعمق معرفياً في مسألة الاستهلاك يصبح عنده ادراك وممارسة الإدراك بشكل دقيق في جميع الأمور يصل الانسان الى ما يسمى الحكمة ، ولكي يصل الانسان الى الحكمة عليه ان يمارس التأمل فيما يدركه وما يتم التركيز عليه .
ويختم فروم حديثه بالتحليل النفسي وبالخصوص ما يدعو لممارسته في فن الوجود التحليل النفسي الذاتي ومن ثم يتطرق لمفهوم التملك وهو تكرار لما جاء في كتابه المذكور أعلاه .

كعادة فروم تبقى كتبه أكبر مرجع لاشكالية الانسان المعاصر في المجتمع الرأسمالي المتأخر وعلى يده تطور علم النفس الفرويدي الى علم النفس الاجتماعي. هذا الكتاب تحديدا وبالمجمل يعرض اشكالية كيف يكون وجودك معتمدا على كينونتك أكثر من اعتماده على ما تملك.

"لقد أصبح الإنسان المعاصر أكثر نأيا عن الآخرين، وهو يواجه معضلة: فهو خائف من التواصل عن قرب مع الآخر، وهو خائف بالقدر نفسه من الوحدة وعدم وجود أحد يتواصل معه. وهنا تتبلور وظيفة المحادثات التافهة في الإجابة على السؤال التالي: كيف أبقى وحدي دون أن أكون وحيدا؟"

"معظم علاقاتنا الشخصية تعاني من الغياب الكامل للتركيز. فنحن ميالون لأن تكون أحكامنا على الشخصية ضعيفة، ونحن لا نذهب أبعد من محاولاتنا لاستيعاب القشور الشخصية الأخرى، أي: ماذا يقول هذا الشخص؟ وكيف يتصرف؟ وماهو منصبه؟ وطريقة ملبسه؟ باختصار نحن نراقب القناع الذي يظهره الشخص لنا، وليس ماهو أبعد من القشور، فلننزع القناع ونتعرف على الشخص وراءه... لكن يبدو أننا نخشى أن نعرف الأشخاص معرفة كاملة، بما في ذلك أنفسنا."

“ماذا يعني أن يقوم شخص ما بتكييف حياته بشكل كامل باتجاه التملك؟
كائنا من يكون ذلك الذي يقوم بتوجيه حياته إلى التملك, فهو يحسم مسألة ماهيته وماهية وجوده ومعنى حياته وأسلوبه في الحياة بناء على مايملكه, ومالذي بإمكانه أن يملكه, او أن يملك المزيد منه”

انّ الإنسان يكون شديد الوعي بالقيود الخارجية، لكنه غير واعٍ بالقيود الداخلية التي يحملها متوهماً أنه حر. وبإمكانه محاولة كسر القيود الخارجية، لكن كيف" "بإمكانه تحرير نفسه من القيود التي لا يدرك أنها موجودة في المقام الأول؟

“تعتمد قوة موقع الإنسان في الحياة على درجة كفاءة إدراكه للواقع, وكلما نقصت كفائته يزداد تشوشه وبالتالي يتنامى شعوره بعدم الأمان, فيصبح بحاجة إلى أوهام يتكئ عليها ليجد الامان الذي ينشده. وكلما ازدادت كفائته تزداد إمكانيته في الوقوف على قدميه وإيجاد جوهره داخل ذاته.”

"ومرة أخرى أختتم القول بأن: الإدراك، والإرادة، والممارسة، وتحمل الخوف وتحمل التجربة الجديدة، جميعها ضروريات لنجاح تحول الفرد. وعند نقطة معينة فإن طاقة واتجاه القوى الداخلية يتغيرون بالحد الذي يتغير فيه شعور المرء بهويته أيضًا. وفي حالة تملك الوجود فإن شعار المرء هو "أنا أساوي ما أملك"، ولكن بعد عملية التحول يصبح شعاره: "أنا أساوي ما أعمل" (بمعنى النشاط المقبول) أو ببساطة:"أنا أكون ما أنا عليه".."

Önsözden öğrendiğimiz kadarıyla kitap "To Have or To Be" kitabının son bölümü olacakken yazar tarafından çıkartılmış. Dolayısıyla belki de ilk oku kitabı okumak gerekebilir. Genel olarak "Var olma" ve "Sahip olma" olarak tanımlayabileceğimiz iki yaşayış biçiminden "Var olma"'ya nasıl ulaşırız, neler yapmalıyızı anlatıyor yazar. Açıkçası katıldığım bir ayrım, ve insanın bu konuda düşünmesinin ve sahip oluştan var oluşa geçmeye çalışmasının gerektiğini düşünüyorum. Bu doğrultuda yazar oldukça güzel önerilerde bulunup şahane analizler yapmış olsa da ne yazık ki işin için psikanaliz sokmadan edemememiş. İnsanın kendini bir ölçüye kadar analiz etmesinin gerektiğini düşünsem de kesinlikle bilimsel olmayan psikanaliz yöntemleriyle bir noktaya varabileceğimizi düşünmüyorum. Yine de keyifli ve kısa bir okuma isteyenler bakabilir. Marx'ı kullanarak yaptığı analizler de oldukça başarılı bu arada.

یک راهنمای زیستن، با پرهیز از خشک اندیشی! فروم با اشاره های متعدد به فروید، تجزیه و تحلیل روان شناختی انسان، و سفارش استفاده از "ذن بودیسم" و تمرکز، خواننده را از فکر به "داشتن" منع می کند، و به تمرکز بر "بودن"، توصیه می کند. جدل فروم بر سر آن است که رشد خود شیفتگی و میل به تملک (داشتن) در جوامع صنعتی و مدرن، انسان معاصر را از "بودن" و لذت زندگی، به تدریج محروم کرده است. او به گونه ای غیر مستقیم معتقد است که میزان بالای دپرسیون در جوامع مدرن، ناشی از فراموشی لذت "بودن"، در مقابل لذت کاذب "داشتن" و تملک است.

A good book, succinctly written and referencing some big names like Marx and Freud... but 95% is quite depressing.

Again highlighting how behind every good intention is greed, egoism and fear, I'm starting to think that maybe some philosophers just took themselves a bit too seriously.

The final chapter (3 short pages) was uplifting and much more positive: if you can overcome selfishness and narcissism you can have a genuine interest in art, culture, other people etc. and experience joy.

Bilo je zaista čudno iskustvo čitati ovu knjigu. Od propagande budizma do kritike industrijalnog društva a la Marks, od metoda i tehnika meditacije i samoanalize do neke kratke analize Frojdovih misli. Želim da napomenem da mi se konkretno svideo njegov pristup pisanju, ova knjiga je maltene mentorsko pismo studentu, kao i gradacijsko prikazivanje unutrašnjeg oslobađanja u vidu poglavlja "Biti budan", "Biti svestan", "Usredsrediti se". Bilo je zaista čudno čitajući o tome kako čulno da opažaš sebe i okolinu bivajući da se to znanje "podrazumeva". Ali baš zato što je tako čudna knjiga koju želiš da ispratiš, mogu da se nauče neke stvari, pa čak iako si iskusan u "bivanju", podseća te na stvari koje se vrlo lako zaboravljaju i pomoglo mi je u tome da promenim perspektivu i jednostavno više obratim pažnju na sebe kao i na okolinu.
Neki mogu da se ne slože sa Fromovim mislima i to je u redu, ali svakako ga treba isprobati kao što sam ja uradila i ispostavilo se da mi, od svih psihologa koje sam upoznala napismeno ili teorijski, on najviše leži i, time, najviše i pomaže.
Jedina zamerka koja je minorna jeste u nekim određenim njegovim tezama u vezi potrošačkog društva koje nisu preživele test vremena, ali to mu se može, naravno, "oprostiti", pošto je knjiga pisana u 70-im godinama i tehnologija koja se razvijala od tada je na mnogo načina promenilo viđenje potrošačkog društva.
