Ranging from prehistoric times through the world's main civilizations, John McLeish demonstrates that one of the main skills which marks out humans from animals is their ability to calculate. We visit the bed-chambers of the Chinese Emperor as his officials allocate his bed-mate according to a strict mathematical rota. We get to know the people who have shaped numbers - world famous mathematicians such as Pythagoras and Newton, and the lesser known Greek woman mathematician Hypatia who was martryred for her views on logic.

The book also looks at the development of the computer and the people behind it, and reassesses today's society in terms of the numbers which rule our lives.

الجذر التربيعي - كثيرات الحدود - اللوغارتيمات - القطوع الناقصة والزائدة والمكافئة - التفاضل والتكامل - إقليدس - فيثاغورس كلها درستها سابقا ونسيتها وأعادني هذا الكتاب لمادتي المفضلة ( الرياضيات ) وإن لم تكن على شكل قوانين ونظريات بل على شكل تاريخ !
يتحدث المؤلف عن تاريخ الأرقام وتطورها وأساليب العد في الحضارات السابقة كانت أساليب معقدة وبدائية من أجل سجلات الدولة والضرائب وعد النقود والموازين وغيرها ، والحضارات التي كان لها الفضل في تطور العد مثل البابليون والإغريق والصينيون والمصريون والهنود والعرب مرورا بأوروبا والنهضة العلمية إلى عصر الحواسيب واختراع الكمبيوتر الذي ساهم فيه علماء منذ مئات السنين ونرى كيف أن العلم والمعرفة تراكمية من أجيال عديدة وهي ورث لكل البشر ولا تقتصر على ثقافة معينة أو حضارة بذاتها ، أكثر ما أعجبني هو الحديث عن العالم الإنجليزي ميينج الذي أنشأ الآلة التحليلية لتقوم بالحساب نيابة عن البشر فكانت أول فكرة لقيام الآلات بعمليات الحساب والتي تطورت حتى وصلت للإجهزة الحديثةة في عصرنا الحاضر .
سبحان من وهب البشر هذه العقول لتسهل حياتهم ، كتاب رائع جدا أحببته كثيرا فهو يجمع التاريخ بالرياضيات :)

فطريًا، حتى الحيوانات تعرف الأعداد هي الأخرى، لكن التجريد هو الخاصية التي ميزت البشر عن الحيوانات بخصوص الأعداد.
وربما تكون الأعداد وتطورها من أثرى مواضيع تاريخ العلوم وأكثرها إثارة. إذ أن الأعداد وتطورها (أو الرياضيات بوجه عام) ترتبط ارتباطًا كبيرًا بالحالة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية وحتى الدينية لدى الشعوب على امتداد تاريخ الحضارة البشرية، إضافة لأن تطور الأعداد والرياضيات كان مرتبطًا أيضًا بتطور فروع كثيرة من العلوم، كالفلك والفيزياء وغيرها.

والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يرصد هذا التطور على مدار العصور وارتباطه بغيره من فروع العلوم الأخرى، بداية من “الحاسوب الأول” الذي كان عبارة عن عشرة أصابع (وربما يكون ذلك هو السبب في اعتمادنا على النظام العشري). مرورا بحضارات عديدة مثل حضارات أمريكا الجنوبية، والمصريين القدماء الذين تمكنوا من الإشارة للكسور متفوقين في ذلك على حضارات سومر وبابل، والهنود الذين استخدموا الصفر وابتكروا نظام الخانات، ووضعوا للأرقام رموزًا مستقلة. مرورًا بحضارة اليونان التي استفادت من الرياضيات في الهندسة خصوصًا. والحضارة العربية، بأبرز رياضييها، الخوارزمي وعمر الخيام، وابتكار علم الجبر ودورهما في استحداث وتطوير طرق جديدة لحل المعادلات.
ثم عصور النهضة الأوروبية وفلسفة بيكون وأوهامه الأربعة المشهورة، ودوره الكبير في إرساء قواعد المنهج العلمي.
ثم بعد ذلك، وفي أكثر من فصل يؤرخ لنا المؤلف للحاسب الآلي بداية من الآلات الميكانيكية مرورًا بحواسيب الصمامات، وصولا إلى التطور الأهم في تاريخ الحاسبات حتى الآن وهو اختراع الترانزستور عام ١٩٤٨ بواسطة براتين وباردين وشوكلي.

باستثناء بعض التفصيلات التي حاول فيها أن يبين طرق لحلول مسائل بطرق قديمة والتي لم أفهمها بشكل كامل، فالكتاب سهل في معظم أجزاءه، ومهم لمن يريد أن يعرف الخطوط العريضة عن إسهامات الحضارات في الأعداد والرياضيات.

كتاب رائع وثري جداً بالمعلومات وأيضاً منصف جداً للحضارة العربية وإسهامات العرب فى تطور الرياضيات

Everyone should learn something about the history of math because as a discipline it functions as both a practical tool and an intellectual art-form. The confluence of these two aspects of math makes it a unique tool for describing our universe while experiencing the aesthetic quality of the tool itself. Only through understanding its history can we truly appreciate the monumental and beautiful human achievement that is the creation of mathematics: elegant on its own and utilitarian when applied to understanding our world.

Unfortunately Number From Prehistoric Times to the Computer Age isn't the book to provide that history. McLeish's work is good in providing the type of overview that incorporates the fullness of global efforts to understand numbers. He provides correctives to the Greco-centric world view, that assumes the Greek worship of numbers led to the full blown mathematics of today. He includes chapters that look at the contributions of ancient Babylonia, Egypt, China, the Mayan, India, and the Arabs. However, his disdain for Greek thinking and its reliance on deductive reasoning goes too far. McLeish praises inductive reasoning and the utilitarian nature of applied mathematics at the expense of missing the essential elegance and beauty of pure mathematics.

This blindness to the art of mathematics leads to a number of inaccuracies. He suggests the very Anglo-centric view that Newton invented the Calculus and did not discover it simultaneously with Leibniz. In addition, he suggests that Alan Turing died from an accident where he unintentionally ate an apple laced with cyanide. Which is really an unforgivable error. Turing committed suicide by eating the cyanide laced apple after being arrested for homosexuality and being "chemically castrated." White-washing Britain's draconian role in the death of one of the greatest mathematicians is inexcusable particularly considering the contributions that Turing made to the advancement of computers and the effort that he put to thwarting the Nazi by deciphering the Enigma machines messages.

What is worse, his over-reliance on the idea that math advanced only through efforts to find useful applications or make work easier, leads him to overstate the power and potential of computers. The last third of his book focuses a number of British mathematicians in their efforts to advance computer science. While I totally agree with his awe in their contribution, because they did create shifts in the way that we think about numbers and how we use them. And certainly we live in an information age in which I share book reviews on a website that is only possible because of the work of mathematicians. But, math has a value beyond its ability to solve practical problems which I'm not sure that McLeish recognizes, and it is this that also must be balanced in any history of mathematics.

This book was interesting but a bit uneven, and a bit outdated now. The ancient number systems he describes were the most interesting aspect of the book to me. He is very anti-Ancient Greek thought, and more logically/scientifically focused, which is fine, but he does a disservice by dismissing an entire portion of history just cause the Greeks had a different worldview than him. And the last chapter regarding the nature of scientific revolutions seems out of place in this particular book.

شخصيا أحب الرياضيات و الأعداد. وجدت في هذا الكتاب شيئا من المتعة خاصة انه خفيف، علمي، تاريخي، قصصي. الاجزاء مقسمة باحكام و في المتناول. يمكن للجميع فهمه ما عدا الجزءين الأخيرين عندما يتحدث الكاتب عن الكمبيوتر و العلم الرياضياتي الحديث. لكن اجمالا فيه فتح آفاق للبحث في مستقبل العدد و الرياضيات.
اللجزاء مقسمة حسب الحضارات و الفترات التاريخية. الجدير بالذكر ان لبعض الحضارات المنسية الفضل الكبير لما نحن فيه الان من تطور. كما ان العديد من الاكتشافات نسبت لغير اصحابها لا لشيء سوى ان اصحابها الاصليين لم يلقوا من يؤرخ ما جاؤوا به.
