After the ultimate betrayal, Evelynn Woods had managed to move on with her life.
Graduated check! Procured a good check! Found a place of her check! Forgotten all about Hunter well… not exactly.
Evie had always been in love with her brother’s best friend, but that ended when he disappeared the night of her senior prom. Now, Hunter is back and turning her world upside down once again. Will Evie survive when he tears down the walls surrounding her heart?

For Nikki, a childhood love for reading developed into a passion for writing. Romance has always been a favorite of Nikki's but her reading choices are ecclectic and she finds her writing reflects her tastes. No matter the genre, Nikki still finds a way to sneak some love and passion into her stories - she can't seem to help it :-) So, if you love drama, suspense and/or the paranormal with some angst and a few steamy love scenes, pick up one of Nikki Vale's books and enjoy the journey!
2.5 stars. This was a freebie. I don't know why I finished this, but I'm a glutton for punishment and, despite the fact that I didn't like it, I wanted to find out what happened. I should have known it wasn't for me at 10% when the hero Then 5 years later, Hunter returns from the military to try to work things out with Evelynn. She lets him stay with her in her apartment, as a favor to her brother, his best friend. She still really likes Hunter, but doesn't think she can forgive him for sleeping with her sister. He does really jerky things that hurt her, which I don't think he means to hurt her, I think he's just stupid. And everything wraps up perfectly with a big bow. It was ridiculous and made me mad. I didn't like Evelynn, the doormat, or Hunter, the clueless guy. He was way too passive and didn't go after what he wanted like I thought he should have. And, his name is Hunter Douglas, which all I could think about what that he's named after a ceiling fan company. The writing was not bad though. I just couldn't get over the drama for drama's sake.
Why? And I ask again, WHY? This book was going so good, but suddenly the protagonist turned out to be too good to be true. I am so sick of virginal girls, waiting for play boys to turn good and marry them. God, the book had potential but the cheap plot twist ruined it for me. McKinley is not her daughter, but is the daughter of her childhood crush (who presumably loved her too) and her sister (who already knew that they fancied each other) and yet they had sex with each other and of course she forgave them. Also, she is 24 and a virgin, pinning for the love of her life (the same guy, you never would have guessed, right?) while he is off screwing other women. And then he has a nerve to compare, 'real' women like Evelyn (the heroine) with all the other women HE HIMSELF, WITH HIS CONSENT, HAD SEX WITH. God, the hypocrisy is too much for me. Pathetic, just pathetic. And trust me I have nothing against, virginal women or men, but the idea that the girl, in such books, always, always turns out to be the good girl and the boy is the masculine, hot play boy, gets on my nerves. ANYHOW, I AM NOT RECOMMENDING IT TO ANYONE. PEACE OUT!
It was free on Amazon today, so I decided to give it a chance.
Too bad I had to DNF.
He slept with the heroine‘s sister! I know they were not together at that time but he knew she had feelings for him and he didn‘t even like the sister. I‘m sorry but in that constellation I just couldn’t forgive him.
Aaaaaand to round up this clusterfuck of a situation: at least two people besides the mother knew that he fathered a child that night and no one thought to tell him? Not even his best friend? Especially when the biological mother of the child dies? I was so over this book when I got to that point. How crappy a person can one be?
I wanted something nice and sweet to finish off my Sunday. Instead I got this *eyeroll*

Evelyn fell in love with her brothers best friend Hunter when she was just eight years old and he's the only man she's ever wanted or loved but he broke her heart when she was eighteen years old and she's never recovered. Hunter knows he screwed up big time and he's no idea how to fix it but he's determined to try because he loves Evie and has since the first time they met. This is a nice enough read, it's a dual POV book which I like and it's full of likeable characters and while it goes exactly as expected it's a nice enough ride getting there.
Yes it was a very cute story but something about Hunter just didn't make me want to finish the book. I couldn't stand him. He was like a teenaged girl going on and on about the love of his life. I just couldn't and the story did not exactly pull me in so I stopped half way through. though the thing about McKinley was a twist. Sad. For both Hunter and Evie.
More sex than story line... Short and sweet but made to drag out by seeing it from the perspective of the two main characters (even though they basically repeat each other) started ok but flys through parts so quick never felt attached to this book.. But hey it was free on iBook buts o won't be buying a sequel
The book fell flat for me. There were some minor proofreading errors, but the overall story was just..Meh. I pushed myself to finish reading this because just when it started to get better, it got worse.
Evelynn Woods has been in love with her brother's best friend, Hunter, since she was 8 years old. She's a nice girl who's only loved 1 person, the only person that knows about her feelings is her sister, Crystal. When she comes home from her senior prom, she hears noises coming from her bedroom. Never did she think that the man who owned her heart and her SISTER would have be in bed together. She hasn't seen nor spoken to Hunter since that fateful night. He ran off the next day.
Six years ago, on the night of her senior prom, due to miscommunication on his part, Hunter Douglas assumes that she doesn't feel the same way about him (because she went to the prom with another man--who was gay) and proceeds to get drunk while waiting up for her to come home. He ends up in her sister's bed, Crystal has always been jealous of the way he's treated Evie. So she took advantage of the situation.
Breaking not only Evie's heart in the process, but his own as well, he leaves the house the following morning and never returns. When Evie is finally moving on, he shows up again ready to claim the love he lost. He knows that he messed up big time, but he knows he has to win her love back and make things right.
Like after 6 years, he comes to a realization that ALL of the woman he's been with aren't like Evie. Really???
But the surprise is on him when he shows up to meet Evie's daughter. He actually thought that she was waiting for him!!
She forgave way too easy. I don't care for woman who easily give in and forgive and forget.
Evie is such a strong woman. Taking in her sister's and love of her life's child, love it as her own.. just wow. Amazing woman. And she got 2 great best friends, who will always have her back. I really liked Hunter.. no matter what he's done in the past. There was something about him. Also he took the news of being father a little bit too lightly.. if he run away from everything before, what made him change this time?

You don't screw the sister if the women you love. I'm so tired of the, I was drunk but I love you. Please just stop. Sister, got want she deserved, I would never forgive her, don't feel sorry for her. She was a w.h.o.r.e who screwed the man her sister loves. She dies, I could care less. God forgives I don't. Sister would of continued to screw her over, good Riddance's. At least the daughter won't end up like her mother.
So tired of all these people who do mean and very unforgivable things and the nice person just takes it over and over.
This story was just to stupid and dumb to believe. She was just a sad pathetic doormat.
First, oh he has to live with you, you don't have a choice. So she lies to her brother to protect his friendship. Um, why, he did the wrong, tell the world, why hide it. You did nothing wrong.
What two days and she is already screwing around with him. He leaves. She is I will start daring and I was like good for her. But then of course she canceled the first date for hunter and then the second date she is making out with hunter in the bathroom. Just stop please.
Her friend Gina, is not a friend. I would of kicked her out if my life since she is loyal to hunter and not me. Friends who lie and go behind your back are not friends
Dude all he does ius show up and she forgives, he never dated her or does anything nice.
This is supposedly a friend's falling for each other interracial romance. Hunter and Evie are the friends falling for each other. There's a secret child, McKinley. Hunter is the Father and Evie is the mother. However, Hunter finds out late in the book that Evie is a virgin.
The story is extremely disjointed. Hunter and Evie's brother, Trevor, join the military when she's a senior in high school. She doesn't see him again for five years. Don't know if Evie or Grandmother Mabel, who raised she and her brother saw Trevor. Hunter shows up five years later with her brother needing a place to stay until he gets his own place. Hunter has always been in love with Evie and is hurt when he finds out that Evie has had a child.
There's misunderstandings and Hunter always ran or so thought Evie. Through convoluted storytelling, Hunter finds out that McKinley is not Evie's natural child but is a result of a terrible mistake he made the night of her high school prom. The characters are not fully developed and the plot is all over the place and the characters are not just interest but also mulicultural.
The sex adds nothing to the story other than Hunter discovers that Evie is a virgin. He had already discovered who McKinley's birth mother was. I got to the point that I didn't care what happened and only finished it because I suffer from insomnia.
Absolutely loved this book, was sad and hot and heart warming story of Evie and Hunter. Was disappointed when Hunter moved out without an explanation and also loved how Evie always had support from Gina and Megan. This is a good read and also preordered the next one.
When I began reviewing books about 21 months I found novels with a character’s name for a chapter quite distracting, however I’ve come to realize the wisdom in doing it. Character named chapters give a definite idea of whose POV [point of view] you’re in, instead of trying to occasionally trying to figure it out for yourself.
There are quite a few women, impossibly yourself included, who, like Evelynn had been in what some may call a wonderful relationship with some guy for as long as you can remember. This was until she out he had made it with her sister, causing her to be become pregnant with a daughter.
But once out of college, employed in the field you’ve studied for, and free as a bird.; you’re glad that what’s this someone is no longer in your life. You love the life you’re living now and the relationships you’re in, but life as you’ve learned has a tendency to throw a curve.
If you allow yourself to step into Evelynn’s shoes what would you do if your previous love interest all of sudden turns back up in your life? Wouldn’t his appearance throw you for a loop as it has now upset everything you’ve got going for yourself, not forgetting you’re now taking care of your niece since your sister’s death?
While I hate stories in which the guy couldn’t find better to have an affair with than the protagonist’s sister, thereby causing a rift in the relationship have for each other. I love stories where there is reconciliation between two lovers who were made for each other; giving both a second chance for a happy forever after.
Does this happy ever after happen. You’ll have to read the book to find out both for now I’ve given this book 5 STARS.
I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read. The story of Evie and Hunter is so beautiful, and I loved all the twists! And I loved Granny Mabel. The ending made me cry. I look forward to reading more form Nikki Vale!
In an effort to get us out of our comfort zone a few of my book clubs have a been challenging us to read books by authors we've never heard of. This was one of my pics and I'm glad it was, it was am amazing book.
Queen Nikki really drew you in with the right amount of drama, trauma, and make up sex, lol. Hunter and Evie went all those years being in love and too afraid to express how they felt.
For Evie to go through such a betrayal caused by her sister and have a reminder of that betrayal and hurt is a lot, I commend her. I did feel she was a lol selfish to not let Hunter know about the baby after all those years, but at the same time I get it. She had Amazing friends who get it 💯 and so did her granny and brother. This was a great example of forgiveness and healing and truly forgiving someone and moving forward. I'll most definitely be reading more by this beauty💞
This is a modern romance with spice. All the characters are drawn from a familiar deck. The situations add nothing new to the mix however. This is a 'no harm, no foul' type of story that will keep you engaged on a plane trip or on the beach. It doesn't demand too much of you, but as long as that's what you need right now, then this will suffice. I'm in two minds whether getting the story from both Evie and Hunter's viewpoint works or not. It's a different approach I guess and without that it would have been mundane..
I really enjoyed this story even though there was too much repetition when we jumped from one character's POV to the other's. At least the author did it with chapter breaks. The love scenes were well choreographed and sizzled with heat. The angst between the two main characters drove a lot of the story, and the twist of who the child's parental lineage is, was actually fairly predictable. The fact that the father didn't get angry when he discovered the truth was a tad surprising. But hey, it's fiction and characters have to be bigger than real life or readers would get bored.
This book is so sweet. I love that these two hunter and evie have been in love with each other since they were kids but it just never worked out for them. At least until hunter comes back from the military and is supposed to stay with Evie. At first she’s pissed , then a little worried he is going to take her precious baby girl McKinley away. But it’s a happy ending and instead of running away they run towards a future and love. It’s very sweet and read very quickly.
Loved this book!!! Yes it is a fairly short read - only took me a few hours - but to be honest I could not put this book down! I loved the back story, and the relationship between all of the key characters. The friendship between Evie, Gina and Megan is just perfect ... the budding relationship (and past) of Evie and Hunter is magical. And Granny Mabel comes out with some great lines haha. Highly recommend this book.
This was my first time reading from this author, I believe. I was fascinated by the plot. There were just about the perfect amount of twists and unexpected turns, to keep the story interesting! You felt like you could relate to the characters. From beginning to end, I enjoyed this book!! I can see this book spinning off at at least two, maybe these additional stories. I can't wait to read them!!
I can't help myself...I totally got lost in this book. I loved both mains, the entire story, and the writing style. I thought the story was absolutely lovely. But I have to say, I almost knocked this down to 4 stars just because of one really horribly-written, predictable character...but because that character was so minor, I let it slide. Great book--I look forward to more from Vale.
Evie and Hunter shared a relationship from childhood to adulthood. This is my first read by Ms Nikki Vale and it won't be my last. Evie and Hunter had not spoken to each other due to an misunderstanding and a secret that was kept from Hunter. This a page turner with humor, jealousy, deceit, and love . Well written Ms Vale
I've really enjoyed this book. I think Evie had so much more room for forgiveness than I ever could. I had misgivings about Hunter throughout the book but growing older, is growing wiser. I really liked Megan and Gina and I'm looking forward to reading their stories. I'd definitely recommend this book.
I loved this book and wished that my journey went on longer so that I would have been able to read more. The characters were relatable and the story flowed well. Keep up the good work I will be looking out for more by Nikki. Would recommend this to anyone who likes a good love story without all the Mills and Boons stuff!
When you think all is lost in the world when it comes to your first love, this book shows there's always a way back. This book was funny and touching. It was also nice to give a child a voice as well.
This was such a sweet story! I completely detest what Hunter did but in the end, it connected them for life. This was my first read by this Author and I was not disappointed. There was a perfect amount of steam and love story. Perfect!
Very interesting read. A story of growth, heartache, compassion and love. Good characters. Unexpected twists. Dual POV. No cliffhanger. A sweet and saucy read.
I just love these little treasures I keep finding on the free download list! This story was so touching and full of emotion. Not only love but betrayal, anger, hurt, lust, and forgiveness. I loved this book and was a great way to spend nap time!
This was a OK book. In some places in the book a little childish but a good read. Considering they didn't really have one date in the beginning I think 5 years is a long time to have a grudge. This book has romance and drama and sex.
