Eighteen-year-old Seven and her best friend, Ten, live in a world where all is peaceful ... except for the violent war raging above the sky. But there are strict rules and breaking them can result in severe consequences.

Seven and Ten have been secretly disobeying the rules for years. They sneak into places where people are forbidden to go. And sometimes, when they're alone together, they allow their bodies to touch, even though touching each other is strictly prohibited.

Every year, on Assignment Day, each eighteen-year-old officially becomes an adult, and the path of their life is laid out by the Decision Makers. Some are given the jobs for which they have shown exceptional aptitude and are "paired" for mating. The others are sent off to fight in The War and never return.

When Assignment Day comes for Seven, the assignments shatter everything she has ever believed. For the first time in her life, she is certain that the Decision Makers have made a terrible mistake.

But the only way to right this wrong is to do something absolutely unthinkable.

If you like unique novels with page-turning suspense, unpredictable adventure, childhood-best-friends-to-lovers forbidden romance, and jaw-dropping twists and turns, you'll love this must-read dystopian thriller!

Why is it that those in power cripple their youth with lies, outright and of omission? In a dystopian world where names have no meaning, stripping the inhabitants of their identity, everyone is giving a number and touching is forbidden, further isolating the youth in a time when they need to learn to socialize and communicate. Seven is a rebel and her best friend, Ten is her partner in crime, going where not allowed, seeking the unknown and sure they will be chosen as mates. When the day of choosing their future jobs and mates comes, they are not only NOT mated, Ten is to be sent to become a warrior, a job where no one ever returns. To make matters worse, Seven’s twin sister, Six is also chosen as a warrior. This is the story of young love, young daring and proof that the leaders are clueless to the needs of their people as Seven switches places with Six to be able to be with Ten and to discover the truth of where the warriors go. Will she find that the great war being waged outside of their underground world is a farce? Or will she find that she has made a mistake by being impulsive?

So many secrets, shocking truths and possible discovery, plague the new life Seven has undertaken. This is her story, a story filled with bravery and daring and concern for those around her.

Jenny Lynne’s Above the Sky has suspense, mystery and danger, as well as love, the love that will choose the road less taken as Seven becomes convinced that her world NEEDS to know what it truly means to be a warrior! Fast-paced, with characters that feel alive, Ms. Lynne delivers another fabulous read for those of us who love great writing, great story telling and a world withholding terrible truths. This is NOT a cookie-cutter dystopian read, fresh angles, amazing dialogue and secrets unveiled, make this a non-stop adventure from start to finish! Older YA on up!

"Would you like to read my book?" she says. "I'll send you a copy in exchange for a review." she says. What SHE didn't say is that the moment I started reading this book, I would be late for appointments, require my kids to pry my kindle from my hand for attention, that I would be so sucked into this story that every minute I wasn't reading it, my mind was still in the story as I mindlessly completed the tasks I wasn't able to get out of. And that when I finally got time to finish the book... she would leave Me. Wanting. More.

So what's it about? It's a Dystopian Romance. And here's the thing... I've read some of the big Dystopian books and enjoyed them, but dystopian books aren't normally my thing. Yet it didn't matter. Sure this is placed in a Totalitarian Environment where people aren't allowed to ask questions and at 18 you are sorted... but that's where the similarities end. And honestly, I don't want to tell you anything else about the story because I want you to be sucked into it like I was. I want you to have to have the book or your Kindle pried out of your hand and for this book to leave you wanting more. I'm serious. Whether you love Dystopian novels or are just "meh" about them, this is quality writing, and even when I thought this story was taking me somewhere, I was wrong. Again and again. So I give this book 5 stars and I can't wait to read MORE. I need MORE. Oh, and I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Loved it!! I'm a huge fan of dystopian type stories, so that aspect of this book was super great, and even though dystopian is a popular story to write at this time, I still felt that this book was unique enough that I didn't feel like I have read it before. Seven is our lead for the story, and the entire book is from her point of view, she's just turning 18, and it's time for her to be assigned a job and a mate, well as long as she's not chosen to be a warrior. The warriors are sent to the surface where there is a war that is suppose to be going on; all the residents of Seven's home are rather kept in the dark about anything that is really going on, and the residents don't question anything. The place Seven is from is sheltered, and the rules are strict; people aren't even allowed to touch until they are mated and only in private. I loved that there are robots around town, and I love that the story felt futuristic, but still heartfelt. Seven has a close friendship with a friend from her childhood, his name is Ten, and I absolutely loved their relationship, its strong and they both really get each other. I couldn't put the book down! I just wanted to keep reading until I finished it, and I lost out on plenty of sleep because of this book, but it was surely worth it. I loved the training scenes, and all the scenes between Ten and Seven. I'm not super crazy about what happens towards the end, and I'm not thrilled that I have to wait to find out what happens until the next book, but I highly recommend this book. Truly excellent read!!

5 Stars!!!!!!

Unputdownable!!

I was supposed to be Adulting yesterday...

I still have so many things to do since we've moved here (namely upacking the 5 billion boxes still stacked in the garage). I started this book during what was supposed to be a short break and then had to tear myself away from the book an indeterminate amount of time later when I realized that I do, in fact, have kids... AND they require feedings. Above the Sky has an Ender's Game mixed with Divergent feel to it and I couldn't. stop. reading.

I hate trumpeting so loudly for a book in a trilogy that I haven't finished yet, but I can't believe that I had never heard of this book before now. My review schedule is running a bit behind right now because of the move but I may have to push a few things aside so that I can satisfy my need to finish this trilogy. It is THAT good.

I received an advance reader copy of this book that I have chosen to review.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was not real sure about this books since it does have that Dystopian feel, but surprisingly I enjoy the book A LOT! I found it to be very engaging, and very fluid.

Synopsis
HER FIRST EIGHTEEN YEARS WERE FILLED WITH LIES.
SHE IS ABOUT TO DISCOVER THE TRUTH.

Eighteen-year-old Seven and her best friend, Ten, live where all is peaceful ... except for the violent war raging above the sky. Lifelike humanoid robots and self-operated drones tend to everyone's needs, leaving people free to spend their time stimulating their minds and enjoying life's pleasures. But there are strict rules and few choices.

Every year, on Assignment Day, the path of each eighteen-year-old's life is laid out. Some are given the jobs for which they have shown exceptional aptitude and are "paired" for mating. The others are sent off to fight in The War and never return.

When Assignment Day comes for Seven, the assignments shatter everything she's ever believed. The rules force everyone to accept their fates, but Seven decides to do something unprecedented: to go against the Decision Makers' wishes.

I really enjoyed the plot to this story, it had quite the different feel than most dystopian and that, to me, is a good thing. I also thought that the world building was good as well. There was some great imagery that allows the reader to place themselves in the story. There were some twists that were pretty awesome too. I have to say that it was pretty unpredictable because I did not expect where this story went to at all and I love that. I feel as though this was left off in a place where a sequel might come into play, so yea the story feels a bit unfinished but will be worth it if there is a sequel.

I really enjoyed the characters a lot as well, I found them to be pretty well developed and that is so important. Some of them surprised me quite a bit in the aspect of thinking that they would be different or would turn out differently than I thought they would initially. I think probably Seven and Ten were my favorite characters for obvious reasons. I think there are a lot of great characters though.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes Dystopian first off, but even if there are those who don't like dystopian may be able to enjoy this one. If there are to be anymore books to make this a series, I would definitely read any of them.

Review: Above the Sky by Jenny Lynne

Here is a blurb of what the book is about. It is a story about a girl named Seven and her best friend Ten. They live where all is peaceful. Except there is a war going on above the sky. There are robots and drones who takes care of everyone's needs. There are strict rules to follow and a few choices to make.
Every year on Assignment Day the path of every 18 year olds life is laid out. Some are given jobs and others are sent off to fight the war and never return.
The first 18 years of Seven life were filled with lies. When assignment day comes for Seven the assignments shatter everything she ever believed in. The rules force everyone to accept their fates but Seven decides to go against the Decision Makers wishes and does something that has never been done before.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a real page turner. I normally don't read books in this genre . This is my first time reading a book like this and I found it to be gripping.

I started reading this with little to no knowledge of dystopian novels. So starting with a clean slate I believe Jenny did a phenomenal job. I didn't want to put it down then entire time I was reading. When I did put it down it's all I could think about. I still can't stop thinking about it. The unique aspect to it(as far as I can tell) drew me in like no others. The fact that I was feeling the emotions of the characters while reading was enchanting. So many twists and turns while answering all my questions as I read. Seven and Ten growing from being naive little kids to being protectors, warriors, and lovers. I loved fallowing their path and I hope we see more off them in the future.

An excellent book! I read this SciFi as a part of the SPSFC and it was one of the highest ranked books from my team for good reason.

A compelling read with characters you care for making powerful decisions.

The thing with any book (at least for me) is that as you read you develop a storyline in your mind for how you think the story will go, but while I thought I had this one figured out it turns out I figured wrong.

So points to this story for being surprising!

I'm not normally a sci-fi fan but after a few pages I was interested. Fast moving and entertaining and the characters seem so real. It made one wonder if our world wouldn't someday be like this. Great writing.

Above the Sky takes place in a dystopian world. If you just went:

just wait a minute and keep reading. The book follows eighteen-year-old Seven, who lives in a world where everything is mapped out for them, from the job they have to do to the person they are supposed to marry and grow to love. There are mundane jobs, and then there are warriors, specially chosen teenagers who go to fight in the War outside of their world and never return. When Assignment Day comes, Seven's future is set, and she is forced to leave her best friend, Ten, behind. That is, until she decides to go against the Decision Maker's wishes and carve her own path.

The plot for this was so engaging! In fact, I finished the entire book in one sitting, and guess who's now behind on writing college essays?

But anyways, the story was definitely a wild ride, and it was definitely unpredictable. I know the idea of a strong heroine in a dystopian world has been quite painfully overdone, but this was a book that was completely unpredictable. There are parts of this book that are extremely realistic, where the plot falls into contemporary, rather than a dystopian genre. This, I felt, really strengthened the story itself, and I greatly enjoyed the gentle balance between something out of this world, and something very much present in it. This blend is really something that sets this book apart from other YA novels.

The writing style was extremely fluent and beautiful, and the author really painted such a clear picture of what the world looked like.

I'm going to quickly move on to the characters, because I feel like the characters an aspect of this book that really made it work. There's none of that overused powerful/rebellious/uncontrollable trope used here. Instead, we get a main character that is sensible and thoughtful, yet driven by the love and passion that makes her the hero she is. Seven is a character that is so multi-faceted and realistic, and I found it so easy to connect with her despite the different worlds we live in. I just want to point out another aspect that sets her apart from every other dystopian heroine out there.

She was not the chosen one.
There's none of that leader of a rebellion thing going on. There's nothing about her being special, or one of a kind.
She was just a normal girl, and the kind of strength we see isn't in how much power she seems to have in a revolution - it's in the way she feels about her family and her friends, and it's in the way she thinks about her own future, and I think this is the type of subtle strength that we haven't seen enough of in literature. What a beautiful way to show that strength is something that exists within.

Where do I even start!!!!

This book is fantastic! If you loved Hunger Games, The Maze Runner and Divergent then this is totally up your street.

Such an incredible, original idea that kept me hooked from the beginning. I'm not into spoilers, so what I will say is that if you want to be in the position where you cannot put book down, then this is the one for you. The characters have that innocence that is so compelling in the beginning, and then everything starts to unfold and you just cant keep up. Everything blends and connects in such a perfect way...and that ending, i did not even consider that when i was reading it and that made me so happy. To not anticipate an ending is what makes reading such a pleasure.

I would recommend this to everyone!!

I cannot wait to read number two!

This book was fantastic! I loved the suspense of it and longed for the Seven and Ten to live their lives the way they wanted. To be brought up one way and learn that it was not entirely true would be so confusing and devastating trying to navigate in a world you no longer know. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait for the sequel!!

Best book I've read in a while

What set this book apart was the maturity to it. The characters acted their age and I appreciated that. Although it's a YA series it was relatable. I also loved how descriptive the author is. I was really sold on each new experience for the characters unlike any story is have ever read. Can't wait to read part 2.

Read for 2021 SPSFC
Overall Thoughts
While pretty firmly YA and Dystopian, genres I’m not always on great terms with, I really enjoyed this book. It has the hard aspects of dystopian fiction, but still contains a lot of hope and feel-good moments. It also contains the simplicity and first love of the YA genres, while not being demeaning. Many of the characters here, like in many dystopians, don’t understand some of the concepts or artifacts common in our world. I also often have the problem of “how did the world really get into this bizarre configuration?” (I’m looking at you, Hunger Games and Mortal Engines.) I was pleasantly surprised there were not only answers to those questions, but that they came as a natural extension of the plot. It looks like there are four books in this series, and it’s definitely one I’d consider continuing, once I get through reading the SPSFC books.

Plot
To avoid most spoilers for this, I’m going to have to be pretty vague in both the Plot and Setting sections, but I enjoyed that nothing ever felt rushed here, though many months were covered. Each time the reader starts to get settled with the status quo, the story changes, or reveals a little more information to propel us to the next mystery.
I’m also a big fan of Fulfilling Promises (or Chekhov’s Gun, if you want). There were several things I was prepared to be angry with in the first few chapters concerning how the society is set up, but my qualms were not only answered later on, but given further explanations that made me want to know what came next. There is one Surprising yet Inevitable twist in the first third of the book that I really should have seem coming, but didn’t because I was enjoying the story so much.

Setting
Again, I really can’t say a whole lot about this. The basic set up is that the characters live in a very controlled and what seems like oppressive environment, where people are assigned to jobs and families, and a certain percentage of children are taken away to die in a never-ending war once they turn eighteen and become full adults. It’s obvious something really big has happened, because many things from our world are not recognized, or given descriptions by characters not familiar with them. Again, I was prepared to be grumpy about this, but enough answers are forthcoming early enough (as opposed to, say in The Hunger Games), to pique my interest.

Character
This is a YA story, so much of the character growth is in the form of growing up for the two main characters. While it’s not as deep as growth arcs I’ve seen in adult sci-fi, there are many tender moments, and a lot of real love shown in the character’s family. I will say there is not as much tension as there could be in the moments of conflict, even for a YA book. Many of the moments of stress for the characters are deflated too early by a caring word where I was not expecting one yet. One other place the characters fell down a bit for me was in the antagonist for the main character, who doesn’t have as big of a resolution as I would like and is not in the story as much as I would expect.

Score out of 10 (My personal score, not the final contest score)
Temporary score until more books in the contest are read: An easy read, a thought-provoking world, and a plot progression that pulls the reader in. The characters could be challenged a bit more to give them depth, but there is still enough conflict for me to want to read the rest of the series. 8/10

(I did receive this book as an ARC for an honest review...and I honestly loved it!)
O.M.G.
This book was AWESOME!
It took me a long time because of the file format, and because of school. But man, this was like The Giver by Lois Lowry...an epic read.
Seven and Ten live in a society where jobs are assigned, and those chosen as Warriors are forced to go off to The War, a never-ending battle where people go to fight and never come back. Seven finds out her twin, Six, has been picked to go, along with her childhood love, Ten. Seven then makes a decision that changes all of their lives.
I won't write spoilers, but I will say that Lynne creates a story world that is rich in imagery and transports you to this dystopian future. Like The Giver, choices are made "in the best interest" of the community. Touching is not allowed. A spouse is assigned. Mating is taught after pairings. Creepy, but totally believable. A world I can picture, and a book that leaves you wanting more.
Lynne does end the book leaving room for more...could there be a sequel to Above The Sky? I think so...Lowry's story became a quartet (though it took her ten long and AGONIZING years for her to release it), and I think Lynne writes a bestseller. But she definitely left me, the reader, wanting more. I didn't want to finish the book for fear of ending the story, and I've only felt that way about a handful of books: mainly those that had no sequels and had so much richness in the story world. The Host, by our famous Stephenie Meyer, is a prime example of a book that I read to the very last chapters and deliberately put down because I knew there was no sequel to comfort me when the story ended.
If you can, read this book. If you are a fan of YA dystopian fiction, and love books like The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Maze Runner, this book is right up your alley.
I implore you, Jenny Lynne, please follow this up! I would definitely be first in line to read it.
Thank you for sharing a fresh take on a popular genre, and for giving me a chance to read it. Five stars!

There are so many things I loved about this book. It only took a few pages of reading to realize there was something very special about this story. First off, it is so well written, this author has an amazing ability to evoke a lot of emotion without dressing up every scene with an outpour of descriptive words. I love when books are written that way. Secondly, this is a phenomenal story! It's different from anything I've ever read before and it kept me guessing page after page. I felt drawn into this exciting world where anything could happen and despite whatever rules were put in place or societal norms established, the human condition can never be completely controlled or contained. Seven was an amazing female lead and I loved experiencing this story through her perspective. She was easy to connect with on so many levels. And thirdly, the love story in this book was so unbelievably powerful yet it never dominated the book. Ten and Seven have a relationship that just makes my heart want to burst. They are so protective and supportive of each other and their connection feels uniquely unbreakable. This book is a must read!!

I also received this book through PDF as an honest review, and I'm not usually one for reading online books but this one was completely different! It was engaging from the very beginning and I was hooked.

I'll start off by saying I love the concept of naming people by numbers instead of names. This is a creative idea, especially as you are named depending on what order you were born. In this case, the novel centres around Two Thousand and Seven (aka Seven) and her struggles to fit into her society. I won't post any spoilers, because I want people to read this book as soon as they can, but it is definitely worth the read. If you love dystopian-romance novels, this one is for you.

Cannot wait for the second book!

Thank you, Jenny Lynne for the opportunity to read your book. This was a fantastic read. I love dystopians, and this book did not disappoint. I thought the fast paced story was well-written and flowed fantastically. I loved the characters, especially Seven and Ten. I loved the forbidden romance. I do not think I can wait till I am matched to touch someone. I thought it made the story more believable because of the forbidden romance. Hope the author makes this a series. I would like to see what would happen. I will definitely read more of her books. Overall, an amazing read.

This is an amazing read. It is fast paced without a lull in the storyline. Most stories seem predictable at some point but this one surprised me. At only 1 single point was I able to say, yep I see what's going to happen next. Yeah, right. ..I was totally wrong.
Seven and Ten's love story is so sweet and innocent and full of the love that most can only wish for. I can't wait to see how their story develops.

Okay, so if you are the type of person who likes series like Divergent, Maze Runner, anything to do with cool future, post-apocalyptic scenarios, you have absolutely come to the right place. This book takes you through the the feelings and emotions of these characters as they become adults. The worry of where they fit in this world or where they will go. Scared of leaving families and friends behind for what might be a greater purpose.

I really enjoyed it until about 60% then it starting getting tedious. It was still enjoyable, but it became harder to stay focused on it. I like how it ended and can't wait to see what happens next.

I was hooked from page one! This book offers everything from action to romance with twists that keep you guessing. If you enjoyed the Divergent Series you will definitely enjoy this! A must-read.
