Love these Buzz Books, they are proving to be a great resource for choosing just the right book for my many reading challenges. A great ready reference to return to when looking for a book on a particular theme or genre.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for making these available for previewing books.
As usual, the Buzz Books for adults didn't disappoint. I love love LOVE that I get to read snippets of the new books coming out so I can gauge what will work in the store and with what customers. Et hem, and also pick out a few things that I'm going to want to grab for myself. Not going to lie, I've found a LOT of books that I want to read myself.
Though I have to say, the running theme for adult books this coming season is SAD and DEPRESSING and ANGRY. The YA titles seem to be a bit on the more hopeful side and honestly, somewhat better written. Of course, that Buzz Books only had 20 offerings, while this one had twice that amount.
This had a good spread of new fiction, debut authors and new non-fiction. I seemed to gravitate to the non-fiction more than the fiction, but there were a few debuts that got my attention.
As always, five stars and a hearty recommendation to all who want a quick peek at what's coming so time isn't wasted on buying a book you won't like and missing out on one or more that you would.
My thanks to NetGalley and Publishers Lunch BUZZ BOOKS for an eARC copy to read and review. Thanks to you, my TBR just grew. ;)
This is the companion for the Buzz Books with YA titles, this time filled with adult novels and non-fiction as well.
I was really looking forward to reading it. The Buzz Books were scheduled to be released just after my final exam, so it was just a great moment for me to dive into them. And, I'm glad I did for it seemed there were quite a number of interesting titles that were available for request (or via a widget read now) on Netgalley. Over the last two weeks I've been granted access to the titles I wanted the most, for which of course I'm really thankful.
The mix this time included a lot of mystery books, which I didn't mind, but it may not be to everyone's liking. The non-fiction part I didn't really like, I thought it was too American-heavy, featuring books that I think will mostly appeal (only) to an American audience.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I was very excited to receive a free copy of this book! I love nothing more then discovering new authors and that my favourite authors have books coming out soon. I have eagerly put the publishing dates for some of my favourites in my diary.
I thought the way it was set out, divided into categories and then listed alphabetically was very useful as it meant I was able to flick to the sections I was interested in more easily. I also enjoyed having the excerpts from the books available as it gave me a chance to see what the book was like before I requested it on here or got it from my local library.
My only complaint would be that the publishing date given in the book isn't necessarily an international one and it would have been nice to know the UK publishing date so I knew when to look out for the books I was interested in. More often than not the publishing dates shown were only for the US.
Overall a really good informative book and I would definitely be interested in reading more Buzz books when they come out.
I have seen these floating around NetGalley and Edelweiss for a few years, but never took the time to take a peek. What a great resource this is! I was able to grow my TBR list with the confidence that I may actually like the books I added! Looking forward to taking a peek at all future Buzz Books!
What an amazing collection! Fiction (all kinds), non fiction, critic, essays, biography, Established authors, debut authors. The works!
I have a big problem here: Though I have already read a few of the books excerpted here (All things cease to appear, Jane Steele, which are excellent, by the way) and I have a few others courtesy of NetGalley (Maestra, All is not forgotten, Before the fall, Don't you cry, Christodora among others) I keep finding books that I'd like to read so I keep requesting and buying. Thank you Buzz Feed Books!
This is a book of excerpts of a variety of books that will be released in the Spring & Summer of 2016. It is divided into three parts, fiction by already known authors, debut fiction and nonfiction. I especially liked the debut fiction section because I like getting to read books by new authors, there is something special about an authors first book. You can get this book for free on amazon.com
So as with the last Buzz Books preview I went through and selected the books I was actually interested in and wrote reviews for the ones I found compelling and will most likely buy.
Invincible Summer – Yes, I think I will buy this It's been a big trend in literature a long time, in addition to Asian dramas for the past few years, essentially it's a coming of age story about a few young adults as they pursue their dreams. From the synopsis I'm a time skip at some point, in which their pasts experiences are further divulged and we learn who they are now, what caused them to drift apart and what brings them back together. Though I've read only an excerpt I'm expecting great things. Before the Fall – Probably will buy Definitely interesting. The premise made it seem like cast did not know each other but in fact they were all acquaintances at the least. The excerpt unfortunately ends before the title event, but there's a lot of foreshadow and mystery, which has me intrigued. Don't you cry - Maybe The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper - Yes, I think I shall enjoy this. This book seems reminiscent of Up. Pretty sure it will be a more adult and mystery-focused version of Up. And I love Up so I think I will adore this book. Jane Steele - Yes! From the first page I was already drawn in by the premise. As one of my friends recently pointed out to me, I tend to enjoy heroines with questionable character. I totally agree with this fact, because for me that makes things more interesting. As I read more I just kept thinking - this is going to be something great. I have already bought this book, cannot wait to read it. The Fireman - Meh...not sure Where I lost her - Maybe Everyone Brave is Forgiven – Yes Mary is a carefree blue blood socialite who basically decides that she wants something more out of life. So she enlists in the war effort hoping to find a life of political intrigue and adventure, but instead she gets relegated to an elementary school teacher. And while it was not the job she wanted it quickly becomes one she loves, until she gets fired after only a few days on the job. Now she's scrambling to cover up this embarrassment from her family but also to try and keep a promise to a student. I like what I've read so far, so I'll definitely check out the book as a whole. Hopefully, the male protagonists are charming as well. All is Not Forgotten - Not sure about this one Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge – I think so Career goals: lunch delivered, powerhouse business savvy and statement jewelry An ivy-league graduate down on her luck, in job she doesn’t want and reunion with a friend she had not spoken to in five years. Not much as happened in this book’s first chapter but I am curious how the demon fighting will come into play. My only hope is this girl doesn’t come off as the type who thinks she’s too good for everyone else just because she as an expensive degree.
These Buzz Books come out twice a year; there's a set for YA books and another set, including this volume, for adult fiction and non-fiction. I used to skip the Buzz Books because you always have the option of looking at Amazon "Look Inside" samples for the books that seem interesting.
But, the books in these collections are so far down the pipeline that most don't have sample options available yet. The only way to get an early look at them is to look here. And, often the samples in the Buzz Book are longer than the Amazon samples anyway. So, since it's a freebie and an easy download there's no risk.
In addition, the book opens with an introductory essay briefly reviewing what else of interest is on the horizon. It addresses literary fiction, debuts, commercial fiction, general non-fiction, and memoirs, which is a nice heads up. The actual excerpts are organized as Fiction, Debut Fiction, and Non-Fiction.
This time around the selection of fiction excerpts is heavy on domestic drama, thrillers, suspense, and all of those rich people in Brooklyn or the Upper West Side or the Lower East Side who are just so darn unhappy, which is, I guess, a fair sampling of current fiction trends and likely to please. All of the excerpts are well written, given what they are; the question is really more about what genres you prefer or think you are in the mood for.
For what it's worth I found a few books, (out of 40 excerpts), that definitely piqued my interest. Given the wide range of genres covered, that's a pretty good catch. There is a better than usual range of choices in this edition and there were many happy surprises, especially in Debut Fiction. I found books that I probably would never have otherwise picked out of a list. I was also pleasantly surprised by the non-fiction choices. Two in particular - Pamela Haag's gun business history "The Gunning of America" and Chuck Klosterman's "But What If We're Wrong" - struck me as especially interesting.
These are substantial books from main stream publishers. So, the easy-browsing angle, the appealing selection, the freebieness, and the early bird access all combine to make this a nice no-risk choice.
I received a free advance copy via NetGalley and what a great book!
All the hot new excepts conveniently located in one easy to navigate edition. I've often avoid getting samples on my Kindle because I have to log on to my Amazon account to remove them from the cloud. Now I've read 40 Top New Titles I have a clear understanding of the ones I'll want to request & devour.
3 Must Reads:
Noah Hawley - "Before The Fall" If his name is familiar is probably because he's the writer of the tv Series Fargo.
David Duchovny - "Bucky F*cking Dent"
Flynn Berry - "Under the Harrow"
I recommend getting a copy of this ASAP to avoid wasting time trying to trudge through 40 separate excepts.
While some books might be awesome to others, for me they are never going to be my bailiwick.
Although I have more than enough books to keep me busy for quite awhile, I love when Buzz Books comes out with a new book.
This one is the 2016 Spring/Summer edition which gives excerpts from the top 40 new titles for this season. They include fiction, debut fiction and non-fiction.
Seeing the cover of the books, the synopsis, and being able to read an excerpt of the book gives you a good idea if this is the book for you. I found a couple (okay, more than a couple!) to add to my "to be read" list.
All readers will enjoy this book!
* I was provided a copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Oh man, I look forward to the Buzz Books from Publishers Lunch! In this edition, it showcases 40 upcoming adult and non-fiction books. I liked the blend of debut and returning authors, especially in the fiction section of this anthology. They range in genre and each excerpt whet my appetite for more! Some of the non-fiction appealed to me but only about 40%. It looks to be a promising year of thought-provoking books and hopefully I will get a chance to read them all!
Thank you Netgalley for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher/editor for providing a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Great excerpts of upcoming books! I was pleased to find that at least 25% of the books included were ones I definitely want to read. Others were ones that might not be my cup of tea, but they were books I could see recommending to others who would enjoy them, providing me with a great reader's advisory tool as a librarian.
Another great way to start the year, the Buzz Books is my favourite way to create a 'TBR list' after Christmas! A bespoke collection of excerpts covering non fiction and fiction, and encompassing many genres, there is quite literally something for everyone. An bi-annual staple of mine, this is particularly useful if you have become stuck in a reading rut and are looking for new authors.
The Buzz Books publication is always a great way to add titles to my "to-read" pile & get inspired to read more new releases. I am always more focused on the YA titles and every year I try to read more adult & non-fiction works. I usually end up picking up new YA releases. The Buzz Books collection always helps me with finding some adult titles to read and get inspired to do so.
Buzz Books are one of my favorite ways to discover new authors! Even though not every sample may appeal to you, you know that there's going to be something in there that you'll probably love! Here are a few stories that caught my eye:
The Choices We Make by Karma Brown isn't my normal type of read, but the excerpt really grabbed me and I want to find out what happens next! It's about two life-long friends, Kate and Hannah. Kate offers to be a surrogate for Hannah, who is unable to have a child of her own. Then tragedy strikes and their lives may never be the same. Wowza!
Another story outside my usual type of read is There Will Be Stars by Bill Coffey. The twist that caught my interest is that the main character doesn't die in a horrible accident, but rather finds himself returning to the beginning of his last day. Sounds a little like the movie Groundhog Day. Curious to see what happens next and find out the story behind the others trapped with him!
While it's been years since I last read Jane Eyre, I remember that I didn't really care for it. I think that I'd like the retelling in Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye much more. In this version, Jane is a spunky, heroic serial killer. I like her already!
Sometimes Fate seems to step in and make things right or give you a second chance. At least, that's the vibe I got from If I Forget You by Christopher Greene. Two ex-lovers have a chance meeting on the street 21 years after being driven apart. The sampler left me wanting to know more! Why were they driven apart? Are they now happy or still thinking about what might have been?
Joe Hill's The Fireman has the interesting premise of a worldwide pandemic that causes spontaneous combustion. There is no antidote and it's highly contagious, so you can imagine the panic. While I've never read Joe Hill before, the sample shows his incredible talent and left me wanting more!
Remember the movie Sliding Doors? The Versions of Us by Laura Barnett reminds me a little of that, as it's different versions of life. Taking a left turn instead of a right. Chance encounters. Different strands of spaghetti strings. Full of possibilities and what might have beens, I found it fascinating!
While not every story was for me, I added several to my wishlist!
I received a copy of Buzz Books 2016/Spring/Summer from Publishers Lunch and NetGalley in exchange for my honest feedback.
I want to thank you for reaching out to me and offering me this opportunity. I had such a good time getting to know in advance a little bit about each of the books that will be releasing soon. Buzz Books provided me with an opportunity to do some window shopping from the comfort of my Kindle and the following list are books I will definitely add to my TBR list based on the excerpts I have read:
"The Choices We Make" by Karma Brown "LaRose" by Louise Erdrich "If I Forget You" by Thomas Christopher Greene (I received an ARC reading this week) "Where I Lost Her" by T. Greenwood "Brighton" by Michael Harvey "Before The Fall" by Noah Hawley "The Versions of Us" by Laura Barnett "The Last Road Home" by Danny Johnson
I had such a hard time to decide on which books I absolutely had to read. I wanted to keep it under 10 books as I have other titles currently on my TBR list.
So many books to read, want to read and absolutely have to read. The titles above are on my 'I just have to read' list.
I love these excerpts and it's a great way to be exposed to writers you might not otherwise come across. Stand outs for me this time in fiction, are Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye (Jane Eyre reimagined as a gutsy, heroic serial killer - what's not to like!) and The Fireman by Joe Hill (an outbreak of human combustion caused by a spore and one woman's fight to save herself and her unborn child with help from the Fireman of the title - not released until May 17th). In non-fiction, Vishen Lakhiani (the founder of mindvalley.com) has written The Code of the Extraordinary Mind. Shown on Amazon as subtitled "10 unconventional laws to redefine your life & succeed on your own terms", how can you not be intrigued? This one is released June 13th.
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley in return for an honest review.
I know this book is a few months old now; but as i've said in my previous review on Buzz Books 2015: Fall/Winter, it never hurts to discover new books.
The book presents you with 41 books. The setup of this book was easy to follow. If a book did not interest you, you can skip to the next one with ease. There was a brief summary and an excerpt of the first few pages attached to each book to make it easier on the reader and let them decide if they like what they're reading.
Out of the 41 books that were presented to me, only 5 have piqued my interest.
I do not regret reading this book because I found a handful of books I'd like to read sometime in the future.
**This book is available for free on the Nook app if anyone is interested
Some books in here there is a buzz about (pun intended) and who doesn't enjoy sneak peaks into forthcoming novels? One I have on my to read shelf is All Things Cease To Appear, so I was delighted about that excerpt. Another is At the Edge of the Orchard some I was lucky to read early via netgalley like Everyone Brave is Forgiven. Being a Louise Erdrich fan I was happy to get a sample of La Rose, which is also on my to read shelf. I had already been lucky enough to have T. Greenwood's latest Where I Lost Her, but more and more excerpts aren't as easy to find so I always look forward to Buzz Books samplers.
Planning what to read is a habit I have long employed. It may not be the way for everyone but it works for me. Buzz Book makes it easy if you like to target your reading search on what is new and buzz worthy. Books are categorized according to fiction both from seasoned and debut authors as well as non-fiction. Excerpts are included for every book listed as well as the opportunity to link to most of the full galleys. Even if you don’t read a single listed book, the overview on what is up and coming is a great bonus for anyone immersed in the book world.
I really love the opportunity to read the excerpts from the top 40 new titles from 2016 in "Buzz Books 2016: Spring/Summer Edition". It is a great chance to take a peek at new authors that I was unfamiliar with and then choose to delve into their works further. I look forward to reading more Buzz Books and getting a glimpse into more new talent and older talent I may not have discovered yet.
Thanks to the publisher, the diverse authors and NetGalley for this advanced copy in exchange for an unbiased and honest review.
I love this format from various publishers promoting their new releases. It gives you a tasty overview of 40 widely varied titles. These are arranged by fiction/non-fiction but also sub categories with new authors and established writers. What I also love is the fact that they are early enough that you can look for the titles on Netgalley to read the book. Grab this book. And a big thank you to the publishers who participate.
Normally, I am against samplers. But, this one is a must-have for any book blogger, book club and/or very dedicated book lover. I have already marked several books to read, and haven’t even gone through to see what I can request through NetGalley. My only complaint is that it is not also available in hardcopy! I mean the ebook is necessary with all the links, but I would pay printing cost to have a hardcopy handy. The ebook can be overwhelming if you truly want to use it as a guide.
I loved reading exerts from this book! They included such a wide variety of genre's in fiction and no=fiction. I have made note of some of the books I want to read. The Guest Book, The Girl He Used to Know, Beautiful Bad, and The Baby of the Family. I have read The Last Time I Saw You by Liv Constantine and absolutely loved it! The two sisters Lynn and Valerie make an awesome writing pair. Thank you for this collection, it is very intriguing and I hope to get to more of the titles!
An excellent sampler of books which will feature during Spring/Summer 2016, with excerpts from 40 books, broken down into established authors, debut stories and finally nonfiction books. A great mix of eclectic stories which will please everyone! I was given a digital copy of this book by the publisher Publisher Lunch, Buzz Books via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review.
I love buzz books I always get excited when I see them available. Even though I found more books of interest in the young adult version, I am always happy to peruse new types of genres and stories that are coming out this year.
I found that the book had a great range of stories and genres that you are sure to find something for everyone.
A handy and informative guide with samplers of upcoming books. The selection is eclectic and ranges from (debut) fiction to noteworthy nonfiction, from literary to (historical) events. I already have my favorites marked and cannot wait for them to be released!
