The definitive account for our time of how humanity can abolish war by transforming the United Nations into an effective world democracy. One World Democracy presents the only viable long-term solution to today’s most urgent global democratic world government and the rule of enforceable global law—a federation of all nations. After centuries of warfare, Europe has accomplished just such a transformation by outlawing war between the member states of the European Union. This book shows how to do the same thing at the global level through implementing the only time-tested solution to violence and injustice—law and democratic government. Humanity has a sovereign right to govern itself; read this book to find out how we can create a new social contract for the entire planet.
I found this book to have many good arguments for world government, especially the need to protect Earth's citizens from multinational corporations and their greed. I think it is quite unfortunate that we will unlikely do anything until another major catastrophe takes place. This book points out how we can make it work to guarantee our basic human rights.
Here is something both conservatives and my lefty friends can disagree with me on. To solve our most serious problems such as global warming, nuclear proliferation and terrorism, we need a one world democratic government. This book spells out a progressive vision for how this would work, the reasons for it, and different avenues for making it a reality. Since few are talking about it, I don't think it's going to happen any time soon. And as long as the FOX news/black helicopter crowd dominates our discussion, this idea will remain tainted by the paranoid. And yet as the authors point out unenforceable treaties between unequal nations are not up to the task of solving what are global problems. We are in a similar position to that of the pre-constitution United States and about to meet a serious crisis that only a democratic union can solve. This book meets the criticisms and provides rational arguments for a more perfect union.
