Savage Highway

Women are disappearing on the highway, a drifter hunts the men who raped her, and a journalist discovers law has broken down in the area.

On a remote highway in Arizona women are disappearing at truck stops. Journalist Johnny Sullivan travels to the area to investigate. He encounters hitchhiker Patty, who is being hunted by violent trucker Red. Patty tells Johnny of the local myth of the maniac trucker. Johnny also meets Valentino de La Cruz, a mysterious Mexican who is looking for his missing sister. Valentino is having an affair with Natasha, the wife of recently murdered businessman, Theodore Mills, whose wealth funds the corrupt police force in the area. The local Highway Patrol is run by sexually sadistic Sam Roche and Franklin Norman and they want to put an end to Johnny’s snooping. Marshall Simmons knows a lot about the goings on in the area, and has a young woman captive in a house. He is reprogramming her identity. Meanwhile Johnny discovers that years previously serial killer Donald Lake disappeared in the area while in transit between prisons. And it seems he had police help. But what is being done to the women? And who is running the criminal organisation that controls the area? Savage Highways is about lawlessness and the hunt for justice in a no man’s land. Pedal to the floor all the way, the narrative speeds towards its stunning and unforeseeable conclusion.

Richard Godwin once against brazenly surfs the line between "Ouh, it's pretty damn creepy" and "Ew, what the hell am I reading?" without falling over. While I thought his usage of pornographic language troubling at times, he did deliver a strong and original story about the sex trade and a heroine I actually cared about. Don't read it for the realism. Arizona is not really populated with power rapists and unfortunate women. Read it because it's completely out of control. Reading Richard Godwin is one of the last true dangerous thing you can do in crime fiction.

Another awesome page turner from one of my favorite authors writing today. Godwin consistently pushes the boundaries of fiction to the point where he makes you uncomfortable. All of his books are fantastic and completely unforgettable. Here is a link where Rich tells you about the story. I loved it. http://youtu.be/krdTayZDuAM

I really enjoyed this very well written book. The story is full of twists, turns and surprises. The main "good guys" are very likeable characters. I do not usually read this type of book but I was hooked from page 1 and the book held my interest all the way through. It is a real page turner and I highly recommend it.

Richard Godwin has written an article in which he says that noir crime fiction and horror are very closely related; he argues that noir can be more horrific than horror itself, because it’s based on believable events.
This book proves his case and then some.
I personally found it very difficult to read – I don’t mean to suggest that it isn’t entertaining – it is. It creates a new genre: the “you feel you can’t go on, but you must” genre.
Yes, it’s a page-turner, albeit one that sometimes makes you wish it wasn’t.
Here’s a brief assessment which may help you decide whether to buy this book if you’re thinking about it:
(1) Richard Godwin is a good wordsmith, there’s no question of that. His writing style is pruned down to the point of being stark. There are no unnecessary flourishes.
(2) He’s very good at creating characters with a few words about hair and clothes, or whatever details he seizes on;
(3) His plotting is tight and (as you’d expect) contains a few surprises. One twist had me turning back to the opening chapter to check how I’d missed seeing it coming. (Hope that isn’t a plot spoiler!);
(4) Some horror authors use humour to give the reader some respite from the grim fare on offer. Richard Godwin doesn’t; he dishes it up just as it comes, which is no bad thing, but it does mean you have to be prepared to deal with it;
(5) It’s a thriller that will keep you interested right till the final sentence;
(6) Finally, don’t buy this book if you have a weak stomach.
Hope that helps.

Crirtic Geoffrey Gorer once wrote about “The Erotic Myth of America,” a country where violence and sexual license are raised to a level of reverse-Eden. The law is febrile, and women are the object of rape-fantasy. He was referring to popular novels, including crime novels. He cited major writers, including Hemingway, Chandler, James M Cain, and “Vernon Sullivan” (Boris Vian. Richard Godwin, another powerful writer, can be added to this list.

Savage Highway is about a way west, to the unknown. The references to the Frontiers are plain. We don’t encounter native Americans protecting their land, but a group of psychos and businessman. The former are used to pave the way, and in return they get meat and drink—which is more gruesome than anyone can imagine. “An area full of killers and rapists…. There’s a certain kind of hunger in a certain kind of man.”

Can the protagonists escape? Can the individual resourcefulness that Johnny and Patty display—a thing that makes the book exciting as well as suspenseful—bring about decency, and to what extent? There a sentence from Kafka that came to mind as a read, thanks to Godwin’s seriousness as a thinker: “One day a leopard came stalking into the synagogue . . . Three weeks later, it had become part of the liturgy.” Thus clearing the land of “savages” becomes manifest destiny, or the business of providing sustenance to its inhabitants. What does it do to those who pave the way to civil society?

Godwin continues to up his game in his latest thriller, Savage Highway. In this story, a mysterious rash of disappearances of women in a concentrated part of Arizona grabs the attention of a journalist, who ends up meeting a woman that seems to be part of the local pool, but is hiding many secrets.
This was a difficult book to read, mostly because of the extreme violence, but Godwin kept the thread taut and moved the story along at lightning speed. The plot itself is what kept me riveted. Who is the Maniac Trucker? Why all the brutality?
This story is recommended for hardcore thriller readers, those that won't flinch when the light is shed on uncomfortable fictional realities. Sexual violence prevails throughout the take, but it is the very plot itself and deeply intertwined in the overall mystery.
Good fiction makes us uncomfortable, and by the end, I was glad I had stuck with the book to see it to completion.

WARNING! This book contains much graphic violence and sadistic sex. It's extreme enough to stretch credibility, but it makes for an intense thriller. The environment is a bit sterile and the characters are sort of one dimensional.

Scott Cummings' performance is outstanding. His character voices are not only distinctive, but very appropriate to the character. This is an exciting listen.

DISCLAIMER: I received, at my request, an ARC of Savage Highway from the publisher. This has in no way influenced my review. I give only honest reviews; my reputation depends on it. Thank you. vmls

Richard Godwin’s Savage Highway is an intense, shocking and riveting blend of contemporary noir fiction and Faustian drama. Sparingly drawn characters and short, sharp dialogue, trademarks of the master storyteller that Richard is, tell a story so brutal and visceral one hopes that such things could take place only in the realm of the fiction writer’s dark mind.

The thing about fiction though… it all springs from at least a grain of truth.

The setting for Savage Highway is a desolate area of the American Southwest where a group of men, yearning for “more than earthly meat and drink" take their fill from the lost souls unfortunate enough to stumble across their path. These men, from both sides of the law, have little regard for women, seeing in them little more than an entrée to satisfy their twisted appetites.

From the beginning of the story and Patty’s ‘encounter’ in a truck stop restroom to the startling conclusion, the pace of Savage Highway is not unlike that of one journeying one of the highways in the American Southwest. One moment moving at breakneck speed as the protagonists race to prevent another death… or escape their own… and then slowing for the curves and hills of the rolling landscape ahead as Richard introduces another twist and turn to the story.

The duality of several of the characters… constantly shifting between responsible, law-abiding citizens and sexual sadists… is something that the author does quite well and is one reason his stories are so absorbing and memorable. The characters Richard draws are indelible and one of my favorite parts of any Godwin tale.

Well-paced action, sharp dialogue, and terse descriptions of both character and place make Savage Highway a story not easy to put down and will leave imagery in the reader’s head long after.

I hesitate to use such over-played phrases as ‘pulse-pounding’, but it is apt in this case as Richard brings us a story filled with suspense, danger and virtually non-stop action. If this doesn’t get the adrenaline surging through your veins, you’re probably dead and just haven’t fallen over yet.

Savage Highway is ‘five-star’ in every sense of the word and well-deserving of accolades. This is classic noir… taut and unapologetic.

Savage Highway is Richard Godwin at his ‘noirest’. A must-read story I recommend without hesitation.

Sex and death and meanness

If you're looking for sex (mostly rape) and death and meanness, here's an overdose for you. This book was a little more than I bargained for -- I felt like I'd fallen into an open grave.

The book was well-written with fewer than ten errors, and the storyline held together. The characters were believable, just not the things they did. I doubt if there are many women who would enjoy this book.

In one of the last chapters, the "heroine" reveals her full name, and I thought, "Surely no mother would be so cruel."

""One of the safest places in the United States.""
When I was gifted a copy of Savage Highway by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom, I was warned that it contained graphic violence and rape scenes so I was fully prepared, frankly, for something extreme and the opening depiction of prostitution being conducted at road station diner was graphic with a gritty realism. But as the tale continued it's journey into the unknown depths of somewhere in Arizona where an out of work journalist arrives investigating rumours of a Maniac Trucker, believed to have abducted raped and murdered in excess of 100 people ( and of whom the locals denied any knowledge), I began to wonder if this was a comedy horror. Just the names of two of the towns - Virtue and Purity - set amidst the heartland of sexual lasciviousness, and the local hotel, the Morality Inn, soon had me smiling more than being overwhelmed by this tale of dastardly deeds.. The whole was just so overindulgent in trying to shock. Almost without reserve, the locals were foul mouthed and dirty minded, intent on rape, violence and murder whilst the two strangers to the area were fine, upstanding gentlemen looking out for the womenfolk. Please!

Whilst I later again revised my idea that this was supposed to be a very black comedy, that opinion had been assisted by the deliciously deep, depth filled voice of the narrator, Scott Cummings. His voice was to me reminiscent of Vincent Price (the superb master of comedic horror) both in tonal quality and speed of reading. There are numerous protagonists to voice, and this Mr. Cummings does very well, with clarity and differentiation. And his text reading was superb (apart from a very odd pronunciation of the word buttocks).

Whilst I could see the basis of this book succeeding well as a film, with excellent character portrayals of two or three of the villains made obvious from the beginning whist keeping the other baddies hidden until a much later shock reveal, for me the story as it stands really didn't work . Even what should have been the very atmospheric nightmarish feeling of being trapped in an unreal world by virtue of always being funnelled back to the same four towns was underplayed, in favour of far too much emphasis on the rather immature sado sexual phantasy action. The shock/horror value was lost in the tediousness of similarity. A case of less can be much, much more.

So, a very good horror thriller idea which, for this reader, failed to achieve more than slightly amused exasperation for what might have been. Thank goodness for audio: the book is saved by the narration.

The title fits the book perfectly; this story is violent, depraved, scary and has some very sick minded people in it. It is well written, has twists and the narration of the audiobook is great. Cummings’ captures the slimy feel of the corrupt, debauched characters and the terror of their victims well. His voice imparts seduction, coldness, anger, madness and fear in all the right places. The unique writing style and good narration puts visuals in your mind that you would rather not have there. It's one of those really disturbing stories that you think, why am I reading this, but you still can't seem to stop. It is gritty, brutal, graphic, suspenseful and at times seems too intense and sexually violent to listen to, but even as it turns your stomach, you continue to listen as you need to find out how it all ends.

Wow! If you like blood and guts as gory as it can be this book is for you. There is rape and sexual torture in case you need to know ahead of time. Some people can find it very offensive. I have read worse. There were quite a few characters and I had a few issues with trying to remember them all. Overall a very good book. I will be looking for more by this author.

Savage Highway
: Richard Godwin

This thriller is Brutal, Creepy , and most definitely Savage! The graphic description of events will make the listener's skin crawl.For some reason I had a difficult time listening, but I had to know how it would end. For mature audience with a stomach made of cast iron.

The narration was well done.The characters were well portrayed. Scott Cummings made me feel like I was there.

I'll preface this with the reminder that this is just my opinion. The story has potential, and many people have loved it. I did not. It's a DNF for me.

I absolutely cannot recommend the audiobook version. The narrator grated on me throughout. (My apologies, but honesty and all that.) The female voices in particular were all completely monotone, sounding hollow, flat, dull, and bored. These women were discussing rape, murder, and sex, yet they could've been discussing the need to go home and do laundry or scrub a toilet. Ugh.

We immediately have fairly graphic sex scenes, which elicit no emotion other than mild disgust, at least from me. The women are blasé about it, whether they're tolerating or enjoying makes no difference in how it comes across in the writing (and narrating). The men all try for aggressive and forceful, but the scenes feel like cut & paste.

I endured about 1/3 of the audiobook before I felt my skin itching with too much irritation to ignore.

Gritty, violent, bleak, and disturbing, I like this book but I’m not sure why. The character development is thin or non existent and the setting is weird. There is something about the story which grabs my attention and never lets up. It is well written and fast paced, which is a plus.
