Altor, a young warrior monk, is just starting life's journey. Caught up in a terrifying attack by werewolves, he is charged with a dying man's quest to prevent the return of chaos and evil to a land of magic, and to gather the scattered parts of a magic sword.
FIVE YEARS LATER I FINALLY DISCOVER THE AUTHOR'S NAME AND THE NAME OF THIS BLOODY BOOK. I COULD REMEMBER PRETTY MUCH EVERY DETAIL OF THE PLOT AND THE CATACOMBS, BUT COULD I REMEMBER THE AUTHOR? COULD I BALLS.
The Chronicles of the Magi is a fantasy/swords and sorcery trilogy based on the Bloodsword adventure gamebook series from around a decade earlier (late 80s) by the same author. Several other popular gamebook series (Fighting Fantasy and Lone Wolf) having already been novelised a while before them.
Reviewing the Magi series as a whole (given the three books within it are relatively short in length and collectively constitute the size of a standard novel), it is enjoyable and successfully captures the spirit of the original gamebook series. The author is one of the best from the gamebook era and there is a gentle humour that underpins the story.
In summary, if you liked the Bloodsword gamebooks but missed the novelisations first time around (like myself), or you want to give youngsters a good stepping stone into the fantasy genre, or you just want an enjoyable read for a few hours, I would recommend these books. I would strongly recommend all of the authors gamebook works.
