George C. Chesbro was an American author of detective fiction. His most notable works feature Dr. Robert "Mongo the Magnificent" Fredrickson, a private detective with dwarfism. He also wrote the novelization of The Golden Child, a movie of the same name starring Eddie Murphy.
Chesbro was born in Washington, D.C. He worked as a special education teacher at Pearl River and later at rockland Psychiatric Center, where he worked with trouble teens. Chebro was married and had one daughter and two step-daughters.
I always enjoy Chesbro's Mongo mysteries, and thought I'd try this series as well. I wish I had not. I have no problem with Chant as a criminal hero, carrying out his version of justice on those who exploit the weak and defenseless. Torture Island is something entirely different in my opinion. The descriptions of physical (and mental) torture are perverted, gruesome, gratuitously graphic, and stomach-churning. The plot barely holds together as a vehicle for the sick and sickening violence. Although I am entertained by the character of Chant, I will absolutely not be reading any of the other offerings in this series.
