Heart of an Alpha

Rate this book
It's twenty years after a tectonic disaster destroyed most of humanity and life is finally beginning to reemerge. While on an expedition, Rissa and her team of explorers are attacked by armed and dangerous strangers. Two of her team are taken prisoner, but before Rissa can mount a rescue mission, she's confronted by a huge wolf who prevents her counter attack. Is she dinner or something more to this strange creature? Matters become more frighteningly complicated when wolf becomes man, a man who immediately elicits a heated reaction in her that makes her question her sanity.
Along with his pack of wolf shifters, Gage is on a hunt for rogue bandits, but his mission changes when he scents the enticing answer to every shifter's dream. Nature has decreed this strong, brave, and beautiful woman to be his mate. Risa's willing to fight beside him, but his wolf wants more. Now all he has to do is convince her that what she feels for him is real.
Heart of an Alpha is more than a romance. It's the story of hope and adventure in a world where survival is a whole new game.

G.A. was born in Muncie, Indiana. Started life in a rural area. Some of her fondest memories are of helping her parents with a family garden and canning corn at an early age. Times changed and work took her family to Ohio. She spent her school years in Ohio, growing up and marrying the love of her life, a local boy.
G.A. lives in a rural area, near Cincinnati, and has three adult daughters and one son, each with families of their own. She’s loved reading and story-telling since she was a young girl. Some of her favorite teachers are those that did "story time" by reading out loud each day from various and wonderful books.
She has a varied love of books, adventure, history, paranormal, mystery, and yes...romance. One of her early favorites was a book by Katherine E. Woodwiss, The Wolf and the Dove (no it's not a shifter). She was hooked on romance after that book. Later she fell in love with Christine Feehan's Dark series. She’s a true fan of many writers: Eddings, Koontz, Kenyon, and of course her bestie Jacqueline Rhoades. The list could fill up volumes, as most bookaholics can attest.
Grandchildren and life still keep her pretty busy, but now she’s loving the fun of putting her stories into books.

DNF at 68%.

I generally refrain from rating anything that I DNF, but I feel like I read enough of this book to have a good handle on the content and writing style. The writing style was not for me. There was a lot of telling, through dialogue, inner monologue and narration, and it led to me being completely unconnected from the story. The fact that I cannot bring myself to finish this, even though I'd already reached the 68% mark, says a lot. Others may enjoy this, so please don't let my lack deter you from reading it.

Action packed and romance intensive. That is how I would describe this novel.

I loved the mix of dystopian and the paranormal in this novel. Hurst is very descriptive in her world building. I felt as if I were exploring this world as a new shifter, learning alongside Rissa. This novel is full of lots of world building that sets readers up perfectly for the rest of the series. At the same time, the intense plot drew me in and kept me coming back for more. Twists and turns kept the suspense in high gear while the romance was unforgettable.

The dichotomy between a shifter’s wolf half and their human half was developed thoroughly throughout the novel. Hurst’s interesting viewpoint on this really shone through. The way that the wolves’ telepathy works is well developed and quite interesting. The way that Hurst has her characters explain pack dynamics to newcomers allows readers to get a full sense and feel of it without halting the forward motion of the story for a long narrative diatribe.

Hurst creates the type of characters that you can’t look away from, the type of individuals that you instinctively want to get closer to. I could almost feel what the characters were going through. Hurst is such a descriptive author, using all of our senses, that everything comes to life in a real way. I enjoyed the different dialects, twangs, and accents that shone through the dialogue, allowing each shifter to stand on its own.

By switching perspectives between the two main characters, I got an entire sense of what was going on in the story, both the action and the romance aspects of it. I like how Rissa’s strength puts her on even footing with Gage’s alpha-ness.

This is a wildly impressive debut novel by GA Hurst. With this as an indicator, I can’t wait to see this career take off. She has definitely brought something new and well worth reading to the stage of both paranormal and dystopian romance.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Gage and Rissa. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, where shifters are free to be themselves. It's a love story between Gage and Rissa, but also a story about how people and shifters survived. Rissa and a few of her fellow villagers are exploring to the east when they are set upon by bandits on ATVs with semi automatic weapons. The only thing that saves her and and her friends are Gage and his fellow shifters. It's insta-love/mate on his part, but she is human. They join teams to help get rid of the rogues and protect their mutual territory.
I really enjoyed this. I could tell the author put a fair bit of thought into world building and there was no unnecessary angst. The writing is fairly simplistic and somewhat repetitive and the characters, while interesting, were pretty much black and white. Still, I look forward to more by this author.

...i still think about this book from time to time so i added another star ; )

I just finished reading Heart of an Alpha, a first novel by GA Hurst and I must say, I was impressed. After an action filled opening, the characters began to develop and separate into a host of interesting people, both human and shifter. The exciting pace continued throughout and the development of this post-cataclysmic world was well thought out. Hurst offers an interesting contrast of those born before and after the event. The growing attraction between Gage and Rissa was presented realistically, particularly Rissa's hesitancy in accepting the instant attraction between two destined mates. The love grew organically and was incorporated into the plot naturally. Not once did I feel that the story was written as filler for the romance. All in all, Heart of an Alpha was a different and enjoyable addition to its genre and I look forward to reading Book 2.

REVIEW: 3.75 stars---HEART OF AN ALPHA is the first installment in new author G.A. Hurst’s paranormal, romance WOLF SHIFTER series. This is beta wolf Gage, and human female Rissa’s story line.

Told from dual third person points of view (Rissa and Gage) HEART OF AN ALPHA looks at the world twenty years after a natural disaster that has destroyed most of mankind and the environment in which they live. No longer having to fear their supernatural abilities the shifters are now the dominant species, and with it comes, the struggle for survival and power. When a group of humans are attacked by a rogue band of wolf shifters, beta and pack wolf Gage rescues the woman he believes to be his mate. What ensues is the search for the rogue wolves responsible, and the building relationship between Gage and his mate.

The world building focuses on survival in a world destroyed by a tectonic disaster where earthquake and volcanic eruptions changed the face of the planet we call Earth. Many survivors are too young to be remember the ‘before’, while others remember an easier time with electricity, computers and running water-books, busy cities, and the comforts of home are a thing of the past.

HEART OF AN ALPHA has a very large ensemble cast of characters including two wolf packs, a rogue group of shifters, and several humans trying to survive in a world destroyed by a natural disaster. The rogue wolves are targeted for destruction before there are any more attempts against the humans or packs.

The relationship between Gage and Rissa is one of immediate attraction. Gage’s inner wolf knows that Rissa is their mate; convincing Rissa is fairly easy under the current circumstance although our heroine is tentative about Gage’s proclamation of fated mates. Rissa is readily accepted into the pack without conflict or struggle. The $ex scenes are intimate without the use of graphic, erotic text or imagery.

HEART OF AN ALPHA is a busy read and saying that I found there was quite a bit of duplication, redundancy and scene filler that could have been eliminated for easier flow. HEART OF AN ALPHA is a romantic tale about two people struggling to find love and a happily ever after in a post-apocalyptic world where rules no longer exist. The premise is entertaining; the characters are numerous and colorful; the romance is passionate and magical. A wonderful new release from a first time author-I am looking forward to reading what comes next.

Starts out with an action pack scenes and carries it throughout. I enjoyed the twists and turns with delightful characters that really keeps you hooked. Rissa is starting to explore the world they find themselves in after disaster destroyed just about everything, they are attacked and fighting for their lives. Gage and his wolf shifters are out trying to help the humans. He catches a scent his mind said mine, his mate, his future but first he must keep her safe. That is easier said than done with bullets flying he sets to work getting her out of the mess she finds herself in. As they get out of the mess he said things her mind just can’t relate to. Could he be serious or is he off in the head. What is the strange feeling she get when she is next to him, it can’t be love it must be lust or is it.

This is a story built on struggle for survival and power as one species comes out from hiding to become the dominant species there just isn’t any reason to hide their supernatural abilities. The world is gone as everyone knew it and it is time to start over leaving the shifters more in control. So much has changed over the last twenty years, some remember a time when things were easier, life was better with technology at its highest, others are too young to remember the good old days. Now everybody is more on even ground each learning how to survive and hoping to get it right.

The author gives you some wonderful interesting characters both humans and shifters. The story is well thought out giving you different aspects from different points of views. I really liked how easily the story builds and blends so well making Gage and Rissa relationship so natural. I liked how the passion builds without it being erotic or graphic letting the read use their mind to see it as they like. The passion is so real it pulls the reader in keeping you invested not only with the story but the characters as well. I really enjoyed all the colorful characters, the struggles real and the romance igniting. This was a big win win for me, I loved it.

Love this book, Even if your not a fan of shifter books, this one is going to change your mind about them

The world has changed greatly , sooner or later shifters and humans are going to meet. This happens when Rissa and other members of her group are found by rouges, who take 2 members captive. She would have gone after them , even if it meant being killed or captured, but she was stopped by a huge wolf who would not let her leave. To her shock , the wolf walked behind a bush and out came a man but she she could not take her eyes off him, one because she couldn't believe what she saw, but also because of the thoughts running through her mind. Gage an his pack had been looking for the men because of the killing, pillaging and kidnapping they were doing in the packs territory but he also found his pack mate . Both groups decided to help each other find the captives and the men responsible for it all. I wasn't a huge fan of the shifter books but this captured my attention from the moment that Rissa and Gage met. You could feel the connection that there was between them right away as Gage knew that Rissa was his wolf mate. She knew that she has feelings for him that she had before, No matter what was going on, the connection between them grew stronger, and the feeling of not being with each other grew almost unbearable. When they do come together, their love was something Rissa and Gage had never felt before. This is not a book for those under 18 but it is a book that shows, courage from all, and others found love in a new life for them.
I've read a few shifter books but this one has hooked forever and am going to read the next book in the series as soon as I can. Thank you G.A Hurst for being an amazing author and writing these book.Heart of an Alpha (Wolf Shifter Series) (Volume 1)

Heart of an Alpha

This book has a very interesting premise the new world after the fallout from the death of the old world. Small groups if humans and shifters just trying to survive. The main characters Gage and Rissa are strongly written. Their dynamic is unique he is a wolf shifter with his pack and she is human trying to protect her town. The character development and story line is strong and immensely enjoyable. The beginning was a little slow for me but it soon picked after all the facets of the story were explained. Watching Gage and Rissa become a mated couple was one of the strongest things in the HEA ending of this boom. I really enjoyed it and will be reading more by this author.

I just love the basis of this story and that humans and shifters may be getting to start over again on equal footing. The story of Gage and Rissa is amazing to say the least. I love how the transition overtakes her in just a few days. I would love to see and read more stories in this potential series.

For her first book I was really impressed! I quite enjoyed reading about the dystopian and including shifters into the mix. Gage and Rissa were really easy to like as well as other characters. I will say there are A LOT of characters and its easy to get lost in all of them instead of focusing on the story. The dialog seemed uncomfortable at times but that didnt diminish enjoying the book. It really is different from anything I've read in PNR. I like new and different so give this a try and I am sure you'll like it!

I really enjoyed the background of the world G.A. Hurst has built. With an ecological disaster nearly wiping out the population and humanity forced to learn how to live again without all our luxuries, it was a believable near future concept. Combine this concept with some wolf-shifters and you have a great start to a story.

There is a good dose of adventure and action in the book that really helps to round out the characters and the push the romance a long a bit. Nothing like the fear of being captured or killed by rogue werewolves to make you want to fall in love! Gage was an amazing guy/wolf. I loved how he fought to let her make the decision about being with him - knowing that if she chose not to it would be devastating for him. There was a bit of a jealousy issue brought up at the beginning that I think could have been done without though.

Rissa was a strong woman - and maybe a little too good at all the weapons to be completely believable. But I still loved her character. She asked good questions and really pushed for answers when things happened that she didn't understand. The only real concern, as I mentioned with the weapons, was that she was too good at things. She seemed to catch on so quickly and adapt so easily that at times I just thought "yeah right."

Overall, a very fun book to read. I'm interested to see what happens with everyone in the next part of the series.

Not usually a fan of post apocalyptic stories, this was an interesting mix of humans rebuilding and finding that there are were wolves. The meeting takes place as a human group is attacked and two kidnapped. A huge wolf literally pins Rissa to the ground, preventing her from making any noise to draw the rogues attention. Instead of attacking, Gage steps from behind a bush returning as a man. So begins their romance, even though only Gage sees their future together.

Pack, villagers, steam, and, rogues. The relationships are interesting, groups share knowledge, weapons, new found changes, and a common goal of removing the vicious rogue band forges new loyalties. The romance is sweet hot and intense. I enjoyed the were mating changes in this version of were life. The families are tight and loyalties strong. The shared humor lightens the very series situation.

This book has interesting characters, situations with tension, danger and romance. A recommended read.

Heart of an Alpha is the debut novel and the first in a new series by G. A. Hurst, and it is good! I couldn't stop reading it once I started. G. A. Hurst combines survival in an apocalyptic world and the discovery that wolf shifters are real. It starts off full of action and never stops. This story revolves around Rissa, who is human. She's never known what the world was before is was destroyed. Her group is attacked and she is saved by a huge wolf. After she is safe, the wolf becomes a man. Gage was not expecting to find his mate, much less expecting her to be human.

G. A. Hurst doesn't create a damsel in distress book. She introduces us to a strong female character that can take care of herself. Even though she is saved by Gage in the beginning, her skills and strength save him as well. Gage is the perfect Alpha male. The title says it all - the couple is great together because they are both Alphas. I can't wait to read more in this series. I giving it 4 1/2 stars!

This was a very well written first book. A dystopian world with a pioneering wild west flavor. The story jumps right in with action, two people are taken captive by a roaming band of rogues. Rissa, the heroine is prevented from immediately helping her friends by our hero, the alpha wolf shifter in the title. His name is Gage and he's the second in command of one of the local lycan packs. Ms. Hurst weaves information on her new world deftly throughout the book. I appreciated the lack of a dump of information at the beginning. The adventure of saving her friends, discovering shifters all while falling in love is well paced. I'm looking forward to the second book in the series.

I really enjoyed this story. The characters are very well developed and you find yourself becoming wrapped up in their lives very easily. This was a great read with an interesting twist for a shapeshifter book. I liked the fact that the female lead did not immediately accept and jump into the shifter relationship after being told that she was the mate to the male lead. There are a lot of characters which could lead to several more books in this series and I look forward to seeing where the author takes these characters in future books. Great job for a first time author!!

Great new Author!

This book is very detailed. While reading I could picture all of the events happening. I feel like I have a new family of shifter's to belong to. Loved meeting Rissa and Gage. As the book proceeds and the story unfolds, I got drawn deeper into the book. It has action and adventure. Humor and Romance. There are some very sexy scenes. Just enough to add spice. I'm looking forward to the next book. From a new Fan... Pam James.

This was a really good story. Different aspect on the Shifter Species and the destruction of the world as we know it added to to story. Rissa and Gabe were a great couple and all the secondary characters were good and I can see room for a great many more stories. I found some things repetitive and the story could have been more refined but over all a good beginning for this new series.

In a world where environmental disaster destroyed most of humanity, survivors are few. As Rissa finds out, it was not just humans who survived - in fact, shifters did as well. When Gage saves her from rogue bandits, and then helps her and her friends rescue those captured by the bandits, Rissa is introduced to a world that she never knew existed.

Hurst has done a fantastic job with world building. I'm not usually a fan of post-apocalyptic books, but Hurst provided an interesting world. There is a large cast of characters - both human and shifter - and that can make it difficult at times to keep everyone straight. The writing could be more dynamic - there is a lot of tell instead of show and the dialogue feels stilted at times. However, I thought that the relationship between Gage and Rissa was well done. I appreciated that even though Gage knew as soon as he met Rissa that she was his mate, that he didn't push her and let her set the pace. They had a nice balance, with both respecting the others strengths. I did think that everyone was a little too accepting of one another at times, which, given the setting, didn't make a ton of sense to me. Nonetheless, this was an enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to other books in this series.

I absolutely loved the concept the dystopian world that was created. I enjoyed a different take on what would happen.
The story revolves around a group of shifters who come across human villagers as they fight a rogue force of human and wolf shifters terrorizing the innocent.
I enjoyed the story but it was pretty predictable and the dialogue felt awkward at times for me.
Overall though it wasn’t bad and if you enjoy shifter romances give this one a try.

I love paranormal and dystopian books and this one had both so it was especially great. Gage and Rissa meet under strange circumstances, Gage is hunting rogues when he comes across his mate in Rissa and Rissa is basically trying to survive and rescue her teammates. This book was full of action from the beginning. I couldn't put it down, we get to see shifters living without hiding their shifter sides and how humans and shifters survive the new world. I recommend this to anyone who loves paranormal and/or dystopian.

for a first book I am seriously impressed. The world building is great, and the story line keeps your attention. After the destruction of almost everything shifters have come out of hiding They live openly as packs, and protect their own. People are slowly coming out of the bunkers and caves they lived in to survive (barely), and the fact that shifters are real is a big shock to many. There is lots of action, adult content, and Rissa is no wall flower. She's handy with a gun and crossbow, and doesn't sit back when danger comes knocking.

I must say it was refreshing to find a shifter romance with a unique setting. The concept of what the world had turned into was interesting. However, I felt the book was too drawn out. The characters, unique like the setting, just didn't appeal to my like of shifter romance novels.

When I saw one of my favorite PNR shifter authors recommending Heart of the Alpha by G.A. Hurst I knew it had to be something worth reading. Checking out the blurb not only did I see that this was going to be a paranormal romance but it was also an apocalyptic flavor. Two of my favorite genres, now how could I pass that up!

I have certain expectations when a story is described as being apocalyptic. By definition, an apocalypse is ‘A great catastrophe that results in widespread destruction or the collapse of civilization’. Yes, Heart of an Alpha does actually fit in that category since most of humanity has been destroyed. However, it doesn’t have quite the horrific side (blood-guts-zombies!) so it’s a little hard to absorb the complete devastation. Instead, it is 20 years later and life is finding a way to survive. Shifters are no longer in hiding and are turning out to be the predominate, and thriving, species versus humans. Once I looked beyond the ‘hey the world fell apart and 20 years later it’s all cool’ business, I was able to get into the story.

The characters in this story were real good with the MCs being Gage and Rissa. There’s a nice chemistry between them that builds up and gets pretty hot. The rest of the humans and shifters were actually very good as well. The humans did come to accept shifters existed rather quickly and didn’t seem to struggle with it too much. I know I would probably be screaming like a banshee! Following along as they battled the Rogues made for some good action. There’s quite a few characters I enjoyed and look forward to them getting their own stories.

This is G.A. Hurst debut book and it was fairly good. Lots of action and adventure mixed in with great characters and world building. Wolf Shifter Series is certainly worth following for any PNR fan. I look forward to the next book.
