No rating. DNF

It's YA language flow and James Patterson abrupt style. Tale was worthy but not for me the overall voice. Got to 30% before throwing in the towel.

This was my first read by this author but it won't be my last. This book reads like a game of chess. Intriguing, well thought out. The author has a way of pulling you in with his compelling way of storytelling. Him incorporating the 48 laws of power into this story definitely made it a page turner and I was quite impressed. Few errors but job well done

What is your position in life? Have you ever just played the hand that you were dealt? Have you ever been the right-hand person to someone in your life?

Michael is a gifted young man, who learns valuable life lessons from his father as he is growing up. He plays chess due to his father teaching him. He retains the lessons his father teaches him. It is during one of his chess matches he meets Darius, better known as Drama. Their lives will intersect again and again in the future and Michael has no idea that this will occur. At the tender age of 15, he loses his father and mother in a house fire. His life takes a different turn from the path that he was originally on and destined to become.

Michael, who becomes known as Loc, runs into Major, who saved him from the fire. Major is hiding some definite secrets but keeps Loc close by. Loc who has experienced several losses sticks with Major. He becomes his protector and right-hand man. He plays the background and his love for Major is unconditional. The lessons Loc learned from his father are still running through his mind as he grows into a young man. Loc is observant and keeps a keen eye on all situations. Loc and Drama run around similar circles and Major keeps Drama close but from a distance.

Major sees Loc as his little brother, but he does not reveal everything to him. Major is a snake of a different kind and Loc really does not know Major as well as he thinks. He continues to be his right-hand man but things have a way of happening that open your eyes to others faults that you previously overlooked. Will Loc finally see Major for who he really is? Will Loc and Drama have their final showdown? What will become of Loc and will his father's teachings help him?

This story was very well written and the action was on point. It is very obvious Starling did his research and you can see some of him in the characters and I am giving his book 4 stars.

1st read by Shawn Starling. I thought this story had an interesting storyline. Good characters. Loc's transition from boy to man happened before he knew it. Major was a heavy influence in Loc's life & helped him out. Overall, I thought this a was a good read.

All I can say is WOWWWWWWWWWW! This book was perfection!! Sit on the edge of your seat page turner! In this prequel, we learn the story of Major's right hand man...Michael a.k.a. Loc after a incident in a boy's home where he went loco on a would be bully. Michael was a suburban kid raised in a two parent home and had a fondness for the game of chess. In a crazy turn of events...he loses his first chess tournament to a hood kid named Drama....and also loses both of his parents. Soon after his misfortune, he and Drama will meet again and the streets will be their chess board. But who will win this game? I can't say enough about this book......straight SAVAGE and the way the book 48 laws of power was weaved into the storyline?!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST READ IT NOW!!!! The editing was on point in this book too!

A real page turner

Can you say good boy gone bad. I guess that’s what tragedy will do to you. Tragedy made Michael grow up quick and learn who are friends and who are foes.

Amazing

This is my first time reading from this author. Right Hand Man is a good read. Shawn Starling did a good job. He is an amazing writer and author. He mentions the 48 of Laws and Power by John Greene and chess game in this book. There is few error in this book but I didn't care because it keeps my eyes open and attention.

My heart goes to Loc because he's been through lot in this book. I didn't like Major because he's two faces to Loc. I believe that Major set Loc up in this book. He did something to Loc's family behind his back. There are lot of piece puzzle in this book. I'm looking forward to read more from this author.

Good read!

Blown Away!

Its not very often that I am blown away with the first book by an author that is new to me in the first book. But every once in awhile it happens. Shawn Starling wrote an amazing game of chess and called it a book! Loc is a young man who horrifically lost his parents at the age of 15. He comes to meet Major after his parents death and that's where the chess game begins. Morals are tested, bonds are built and broken, but thru it all Loc continued to remember the lessons that his father instilled in him. I will definitely be checking out more of Shawn's books!

This was my first book by Shawn Starling and I wasn't sure what to expect but I didn't expect to be so pulled in by the story. The story of a smart kid growing up in a loving home and how one life changing day changed his entire life was filled with twist, turns and surprises that will keep you wanting to get to the next chapter. A great read, errors were very minimal and did not take away from the flow of the book. A very well written book and I will be reading his other books. Definitely on my recommendation list.

Great read

This is my first read by this author, and I must say that it won't be my last. It was a great and interesting read. This book was well written and played out like a game of chess. Every move was strategic and calculated. It took us on Locs journey from a boy to a man, after a tragedy in his young life. The storyline was well written and flowed. Kudos to the author, and I will definitely be reading more of his work.

This would not be my typicial genre, but I was so glad that I got the opportunity to read Shawn's book. This is a sensational story of a young boy being dealt a tragic hand and having to come to terms with his fate. And doing what he needs to in order to survive. The story is extremely well written and the flow was perfect. The characters are what caught my attention the most. The book is intense, intriguing and in some parts emotional. Definately a five star read.
