It isn't easy to surprise Cassandra Bick. When you run a human-vampire dating agency, your colleague is a witch who is engaged to a shifter and your business partner is one of London's most powerful (and sexiest) vampires, there's no such thing as a normal day at the office. But when a mysterious Dark Dates client brings a dire warning of a new threat to the city's supernatural community, Cass and her friends realise they are up against their deadliest foe yet – and that this time, the danger is far closer to home than they could ever have imagined. Sexy, snarky and with more bite than a crypt full of vampires, Angel Falls is the latest in the Dark Cassandra Bick series.

4.5/5 You are all probably tired of constant stream of positive reviews on the blog, but truth it, I've been on a very good streak of books from my favorite authors, and it hasn't been broken yet. I also designated some of the not so favorite books which weren't review requests to my Friday Minis, so it hasn't been all of the same quality. While I can't predict what's going to happen in February, I warn you that January happens to be preeetty sweet reading-wise here, on the blog.
Anyway, back to Miss Sinclair's Angel Falls. I was so happy with this book, peeps, especially with its ending. The author has grown so much in a few years since she started writing in this genre, and this book so far is her strongest.
Cassandra Bick is a unique blend of British snarkiness, a tribute to popular shows like Supernatural and Buffy, and to the surge of popularity in paranormal fiction in general. Don't get surprised reading a passage like this:
"But it also appears this attack was the cover for a power grab, aimed at displacing your lover Laclos, by his progeny, a young vampire called Sebastian - your ex-lover, I believe? - who is now missing, presumed staked, at the hands of your other lover, the hunter Cain?"
"God, will you knock it off with this "lover" stuff? I feel like Anita Blake."
HA! This made me burst with surprised laughter. Cassandra Bick, if you've read the previous installment in the series, is a buisness woman who can sense The Others - a variety of supernatural folks and who opens a dating agency for others and humans in the middle of London. This leads to a whole lot of trouble and involves her mysterious on-a-off long term boyfriend, a vampire hunter Cain and an unofficial leader of vampires of the city, Laclos, who both manage to get her in an out of trouble along with many other supernatural friends and allies from one book to the next.
Cass is an absolutely normal woman, with a lot of self-doubt and grumpiness, and all that keeps her shit together is a healthy daily dose of snark. Cain is deliciously broody, clueless about her geeky popular culture references and sexy as hell. And Laclos... I love his character to bits. He is snarky, ladies and gents (but so is Cain), but he also deliberately plays on human perceptions of vampires and turn them up to eleven. It's all leather Goth scrumptiousness, pale bare chest perfection and constant lazy flirtation, but don't underestimate him. Under all this he is a ruthless, decadent shark!
There is a nod to Anita Blake as you could see, and while I was reading this book I couldn't help but compare it to Hamilton's writing. If only Anita Blake didn't take herself so seriously it could have been just as fun to read.
Which brings me to sex. Both Laclos and Cain vie for Cass's attention, but there is surprisingly little sex in the books, and all of this beautiful and emotional. I can feel affection of Cass and Cain for each other, and it's especially visible in this book due to the circumstances. There is also a visible lack of bigotry or racism. Everyone is accepted as they are, - without any labels. You'll know what I'm talking about when you read it. *wink-wink*
Angel Falls is a tightly run ship. Structurally, character-wise the series in general is getting stronger with each book. There is action, emotional trauma and both Cain and Laclos are in a lot of trouble not only reeling from what happened in Wolf Night but forced to deal with the far-reaching consequences of their decisions. Medea and Katie aren't doing that well either. So I suggest you pick up the first book, Dark Dates, and find out what's all the fuss about. It's a shaky debut with a fab banter, but the author finds her style in Wolf Night and the short stories which are absolutely delightful. I think I might go and re-read it all myself. Recommended.
Angel Falls is the book that started me on my Cassandra Bick Chronicles addiction. I didn’t read it first (Thank God!) but it’s the one that caught my attention. Vampire dating service. London. Dire warnings. A series…why yes please I would like to read it. From the beginning? Of course, let hope I like it. And then I loved it and couldn’t slow down reading the series. So now I have the latest book in hand and devoured it. Holy crackers! I didn’t think things could get any better or crazier than it has already been. I was wrong, so wrong.
Everybody is back and Cassandra is trying to get her business going…again. Of course, things just can’t go smoothly. Cain is trying to recover from the previous battle, Laclos is on the loose hopped up on Cain’s blood, Medea and Katie are having issues, and poor Cassandra - her home is in constant ruins. Doesn’t anybody know how to knock! There’s new players in town and bad things are happening but the gang is handling it in their usual style. Still plenty of zingers getting thrown out (“So do you want to drive Miss Daisy or shall I?) to keep me laughing but this book has a darker, sinister edge to it. The stakes (no vamp joke intended) are higher and the excitement is explosive. And what would a Cassandra ending be without an epic battle? Oh yes, there is one, more than one in fact. I couldn’t figure out how it was going to go. Would he survive? Who is going to win? And then WHAM! It was outstanding! But then I got to the very end of the book…
Up until now, I’ve had all Cassandra Bick Chronicles in hand and didn’t stress too much about their endings. A little cliffy between books is no biggie when you can just immediately start the next title. And that is exactly what each of the previous books had: a little cliffy. However, Angel Falls does not have a little cliffy, it has a BIG ONE! Cain! Oh no! I’m sobbing here desperate to find out about Cain. Laclos what? WHAT! Medea and Katie and the wedding! Cassandra, how are you going to handle all that? The bigger question is how will I survive the wait until the next book comes out?
I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine. Stars - 5, Flames – 2.5
I’ve travelled with Cassandra Bick through London as she struggled with all of her new experiences and discoveries in this city of the paranormal. A human with a ‘touch’ of something special, Cass decided to open a dating agency, Dark Dates, that catered to vampires and the humans that were intrigued. Now three books in, and Dark Dates is not regularly providing her with a steady income. Of course, her entanglement between Laclos, the rock-star of old vampires and Cain, her on-again off-again wholly unlabeled boyfriend that is both more and less than an angel.
After Wolf Night (book 2) I didn’t think that there could be quite as much going on, but apparently London is a 24 hour town, and Cass is always in the mix, somehow. I adore Cass: she’s smart, not always careful, funny, loyal and completely non-judgmental. She’s one of those people who just draw others to her – her sense of humor and snarky comments add a wonderful layer of ‘ice breaker’ moments – keeping the story from being all doom and gloom. And interactions with her friends (Kate and Medea), her men (Laclos and Cain) as well as moments with other vampires, messengers, angels and even her cat all feel possible and natural, and move the story forward except when you are laughing too hard to continue.
One would think that the squashing of a war between the werewolves and vampires would have brought some sanity to Cass’ life, but no. Laclos has gone over the top, even more outrageous and outlandish than before, and with a new infusion of something extra from Cain’s lifesaving efforts - he’s about to start a whole new level of trouble. And this could mean Armageddon for everyone if the disgruntled vampires have their way.
Truly the best urban fantasy that you’ve never heard of, Tracey Sinclair infuses the story with characters you want to know, vampires, werewolves, witches and other creatures that alternate between funny, dangerous, untrustworthy and a girl’s best friend, and action. So much action that it runs fast and furious through the story, keeping you on your toes as you rush to the next book. Angel Falls is slightly darker with an ending that left me heartbroken for Cass, even as I couldn’t see any other possibility. Stakes are higher, hearts and lives are on the line, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. A truly wonderful 3rd book for the series, I’m now off to read the supplementals, A Vampire in New York and Other Stories. If you like UF or paranormal romance with heat and action – go grab this series now!
I received an eBook copy of the title from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility. This review was originally posted on I am, Indeed
Cassandra Bick runs a supernatural dating agency and between her business, her relationship with both a grounded Angel (Cain) and one of the most powerful vampires in London (Laclos), you would think that this makes Cassandra an old hat at dealing with supernatural problems but you'd be wrong. When a fledgling enters her office issuing a threat to Laclos's safety because quite uncharacteristically, he has gone on a slaughtering spree thanks to ingesting Cain's blood, Cassandra cannot overlook the threat, no matter how much she would like to. With a vampire war looming, Cassandra has a lot to deal with and it's all made worse with the arrival of Cain's wife and the angels who have determined that Cain broke the law when he shared blood with Laclos.
Despite everything that she has been through, Cassie hasn't really grown as a person. Cassie feels driven to size up the women she interacts with as some competition. Cassie has to break down what her so-called competition is wearing and how it all rates against what she has or can afford, making her internal monologue irritating at times. It's almost a relief when she's told to give it a rest, considering that both Laclos and Cain the two supernaturals who are arguably the most attractive in the city have been battling over her. With everything that's happening in Angel Falls, Cassie's continual competition with the women around her is absolutely tedious to read and made we want to scream just grow up already. On a positive note, she's still willing to do what she had to do to survive and to take care of the little supernatural family she has managed to assemble.
Cassie's little supernatural family has grown even tighter in Angel Falls. We were introduced to another mortal who owes a favor to Cain and the Valkyrie, Cain's wife returned for the big battle. Everyone has competing motivations but they all manage to work together to save Laclos. I love that Medea will now be a full partner in Dark Dates because this further elevates her status. I want to see these characters continue to grow and become the ultimate Scooby team. I found myself particularly drawn to the changing relationship between Cain and Laclos. Laclos has experienced many changes after drinking Cain's blood and at times we are told that it has created a profound bond (yes, a Supernatural reference) but Sinclair works hard to show that the bond is more than supernatural and that these men have developed a history which results in a certain amount of regard.
By about the third book, I normally feel as though I have sense about the world but Sinclair showed me exactly how much I had assumed about the Cassandra Bick Chronicles by the ways she expanded the world and added so much nuance to her characters. Until Angel Falls, though we knew that angels existed and are powerful beings, we knew very little about them. We learned that Angels don't conform to modernist models of gender identity and that once they love someone, they love forever. I must admit to finding this fascinating. The angels touch upon LGBT themes and are a notable parallel between genderqueer/non-binary/genderfluid people. That being said, it's not entirely inaccurate to include Cain as one of them; however, as a member of a species that can ALL change body/shape/gender/sex at will and generally as an alien being, the analogy isn't perfect and there are marked differences between this angel's experience/representation and a genderqueer/fluid/trans human's experience etc.
Fantasy and supernatural books have never really appealed to me much. I'm such a sceptic and books I read have to have some believability to them. Tracey Sinclair has written a book in a genre that never in a million years would I think would appeal to me.
Sinclair really impressed me with 'Angel Falls' and she has opened my eyes to a whole new genre that I could have missed out on. I loved 'Angel Falls' and while it contained vampires, shape-shifters, witches, angels and valkyries - a bit of a stretch for anyone's imagination - Sinclair manages to exquisitely meld all of their lives together in a seamless way.
Another reason why I was a little dubious to read this book was because it was book three in the 'Cassandra Bick Chronicles' and I was worried that I wouldn't get it being so late to the series. That really wasn't an issue though because Sinclair explains enough to give you a rough idea of what's already happened and she's ready to transport you to a whole different world straight away. I really enjoyed Angel Falls, more so than I ever thought I would. Thank you Tracey Sinclair for opening my eyes to a whole new world of books to get stuck in to! I am eager to read the first books in the series and will be looking out for future Cassandra Bick stories!
Unlike George RR Martin, Tracey Sinclair does not keep her readers waiting, and the fourth installment in the Dark Dates series does not disappoint. The opening is action-packed with some epically gory violence in the first chapter, and there’s no let-up in pace or tension from then on – twists, new characters and revelations abound, leading to a thrilling final showdown on London’s Tower Bridge. There’s plenty of suspense – has the Laclos we know and love turned into a maniacal villain? What’s happened to Medea? – but also thoughtful nuance as Cain and Laclos struggle with the effect that sharing blood has had on Laclos and their relationship. Readers who have been longing to find out more about Cain’s history will not be disappointed; it’s bitter and brutal. Angel Falls is sassy, sexy and wickedly funny, but it also packs proper emotional punch; there are some sickening scenes in the vampires’ crypt and the ending is a cruel, heart-breaking cliffhanger that will leave you desperate to know what happens next. A cracking read.
Whew, what a ride! Why this series is not more popular, I'll never know! Paranormal at it's finest. Action packed from start to finish.
The gang is back and at it again. The minute they clear up one situation another is on it's heels. Cain is recovering from their last "mission", Laclos is experiencing some unwanted side effects after sampling Cain's brand of cure, and Cass is hoping for a few minutes peace. Too bad it isn't in the cards for her. Medea and Katie are also experiencing some problems. It seems our little ragtag team is falling apart at the seams. As if those aren't enough problems, there is not just one, but several sets of villains vying to take them down. How are they gonna make it out of this one?
There is a major cliff hanger ending which has me dying for the next book! I need it NOW. If you haven't read this series, do yourself a big favor and start it right away! You will NOT be sorry! Action, snark, and sexiness what more could you want?
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I've enjoyed all the Cassandra Bick Chronicles so far, but I think this is where the series really comes into its own. The world and its characters are really well established now, so the narrative is able to sweep along without so much set-up or explanation as in the earlier books. Also, having seen the complexity of the relationships building through the books, the reader is more invested in what happens to the characters, as individuals but also as a team/family/group/couple/love triangle (delete as appropriate), making the story more powerful when the unexpected slaps you in the face (or, I probably should say 'bites you in the neck'... [sorry, couldn't resist]). With the cliffhanger ending, all this means I'm really looking forward to Book 4!
Sexy, snarky and with more bite than a crypt full of vampires, Angel Falls is the latest in the Dark Dates: Cassandra Bick series.
My Review
If you haven't read the previous two, stop here and go check them out, this can be read as a standalone but I am going to mention something from the previous book so stop.
Okies good, so we left off with Laclos being saved by Cain stepping in and as a result Laclos is "off his nut" super charged on the best blood flowing through his veins. If you haven't read the previous and are still here, Laclos is a vampire, Cain is a warrior angel, Cassie has dating history with them both. Currently with Cain, Laclos is mr inappropriate and always talking in sexual innuendos to both Cassie and Cain- he loves winding Cain up. Anyway Laclos is killing vampire seniors left right and centre, he is out of control, Cain is recovering from the last book. Cassie is trying to sort out her dating business (mortals, vampires - she has a special dating service).
We see some of the players from the previous book(s) and some new faces. The banter, the attitudes, sex, danger, fighting, disasters and Cassie - the human with her gift, a sense that helps her deal with her supernatural clients and the insane scraps she finds herself in.
It is a busy book, unresolved issues from the previous book, storylines picking up from where we left them. Cassandra's love *triangle* if you will, although this isn't nearly as central an issue but ever present, she is a lucky girl.
If you like your books with vampires, angels, witches, shapeshifters and that is just some of the mysticals that feature. Sarcasm, sex, bantz, jealousy, relationships ooft the book, for being just over 200 odd pages, keeps on giving. I read book two three years ago and then hung off because I didn't have another after this. I have the next instalment waiting and it won't be three years (unless I find out it ends on a cliff hanger) lol, 4/5 for me this time.
Another great addition to the Cassandra Bick Chronicles, full of the wonderfully sharp humour the series has throughout. The characters are also all back on top form, although we saw a bit less of Laclos which is always a shame! It was interesting to have more insight into the angelic side of Cain's nature, and what he was like before he became a hunter, as well as his personal relationship with Laclos (introduced in the Dark Dates short stories).
I really like in particular how Tracey explores the idea of immortality, and a character being alive for longer than a human lifespan can comprehend; so often books and films featuring vampires or other immortal supernatural characters look at the idea of what might happen to an immortal after the human involved has died, and high points from earlier in their long life spans, without really touching on how being alive for centuries or millennia would affect your views on the world. In all sorts of ways, through Cain and more introduction to the angels, Tracey has explored how that experience might affect how you see the world and live within it, and even with Laclos and how his views differ from other, younger vampires. The fact that this is all done with sharp humour, and Cassandra's truly realistic reactions to and questions about these revelations (what would you ask a creature who had been alive for a thousand years?!) is even better.
And as if I needed any more incentive to look out for the next in the series, an intriguing cliffhanger at the end!
I like my vampires in tight leather pants and you can be sure that Dark Dates delivers on this front! I want to be part of the Dark Dates gang - and it feels like they'd let me join in.
There's plenty of action set around some iconic locations in London: St Paul's and the South Bank. It *feels* epic in scale - but also is grounded enough to seem real - well as real as vampires, angels and shapeshifters can ever be.
I've read this bad boy twice. I really do love a book series when you can get right into the characters. Things I love about DD are the fast pace, the geeky references (although I get right miffed when I don't get one) and the smoking hot men folk. There is plenty of action in here and all the old favs are back. Much fun and leaves you wanting more!
I've read many sci-go/fantasy/urban fantasy series over the years and there seems to be one universal truth, they don't tend to really hit their stride until book three. While the first two books in this series are awesome this book goes above and beyond that. Everything just seems to fit into place seamlessly and the story runs along at a great pace. My recommendation- read the first two just so you can get to this one. You won't be disappointed!
