Michael cannot sleep and it's ruining his life - but when the March Hare pops out of a picture book and offers to help him cut a deal with Somnus, the Roman God of Sleep, Michael has no choice but to accept.
A short story set in Australia for fans of magic-realism and contemporary fantasy.
Ashley is a poet, novelist and ex-teacher living in Australia.
He taught English, Media and Music Production, played in a metal band, worked in an art gallery and slaved away at music retail. Aside from reading and writing, Ashley loves volleyball and Studio Ghibli – and Magnum PI, easily one of the greatest television shows ever made.
I’ve really come to enjoy Ashley Capes’ quirky style of writing!
A despondent Michael, floundering after the death of his wife, does a deal with Somnus, the God of sleep.
Somnus and the March Hare is a weird and wonderful short story with quirky characters, filled with magical realism and written in Ashley Capes’ unique style.
I would have liked a bit more background on Michael’s circumstances.
With my thanks to the author for my copy to read and review.
Brilliantly written story, great setting and atmosphere, surprising and pleasant. It saved my evening, a good read to chill out. The March Hare from Alice in Wonderland comes alive, and his behaviour is described very convincingly and fit to his origins. Somnus is depicted in a way that makes me want to meet him. Have a good night.
What an intriguing story! I'm only sorry it ended so quickly. I loved Ashley Capes’ unique take on magical realism and the contemporary Australian setting.
