Recently divorced Paige Knight is struggling as the shadows of her broken marriage appear around every corner. It’s an insult on the top injury when she realizes that her ex, not only left her practically penniless but also for a woman half her age. At the urging of her family, Paige decides to move home to Granite, Virginia, where at 42, she’s left with the challenge of reinventing herself. Although her future is uncertain, she's not afraid to step out in faith and take chances in her life, but she’s convinced that love won't be an option.
After a knee injury, Nick Granger, a professional football player, lost his career and wife in the same week. In one short month, he finds himself retired, divorced, and living the life of a single dad. After moving back home to Granite, Nick slowly manages to balance his new high school coaching career while being a single father, but begrudgingly accepts the fact that his teenage daughter, Katie, will need the guidance of a good woman as she matures. Caught between making sure she has everything she needs and rehabilitating after his career-ending injury, Nick doesn’t have time for love even if he were open to it.
As both Paige and Nick accept living life with status quo, will they dare take a chance on love when they run into one another, where they shared their glory years? Or will their exes spoil any chance of a happy reunion?
Kimberly McKay has a well-rounded career as romantic suspense and paranormal author, screenwriter, podcaster, editor, writing instructor at OU, and director. She is writing and directing her first documentary called BRAT AMBITION, which she and her team hope to develop and release by 2024. Through it all, she's a storyteller at heart.
Kimberly has traveled worldwide due to her father's military career, giving her plenty of character content to pull from. She started her writing career at the state paper in Oklahoma before she got traditionally published and eventually became an Indie Author.
Kimberly recently signed a contract for four of her scripts that are being shopped throughout the film community. Kimberly hosts 'A Novel Thought' podcast, which can be found on most streaming platforms. She's also getting ready to release her 10th novel, Miss Fortune, in 2024.
She and her husband, married for over 23 years, love to travel and reside in Oklahoma City with their son and rescue dog. Reading, photography, music, and film are some of her passions.
Romance, clean; This was a fun romance with older characters in their 40's who reconnect in their hometown. Lovely chemistry between them, cute sports back story for the H, and solid family for the h in town. This was definitely more of a 3.5 for me as a reader. Honest hurting hearts, great chemistry, and a lovely fall. Katie and Connor's side story was cute to read too. Two people trying to get their fit in their family, the town, and putting their past divorces behind them while embracing the emotions they had for each other in their HS years and seeing what a great fit they were with each other in the present. Some of the side characters were more caricatures, and bit off, along with a bit of the storyline (not going into that here) so not a completely strong read for me, but the emotions, connection, and chemistry were perfect between the two main characters.
Great book for this rainy day. Both the main characters had been dumped and burnt by their former spouses and each was in the process of starting over when they met. I appreciated that this was not an insta-love situation and that their relationship progressed after a friendship was renewed.
Was glad to read about the karma experienced by the now ex's. The former mistress fared better than the ex-husband, the ex-wife was neutralized. The ex-husband experienced his own brand of karma when faced with the fact that neither his mistress nor his ex-wife wanted him. Loser, big time.
Kimberly’s descriptive character development leaves the reader believing they would recognize each one if they met in real life. The satisfying plot and ending made me want to stand up and cheer.
Good grief ! Did anyone edit this book. It has so many missed words, added unnecessary/wrong words, that it comes across like an amateur sixth grader wrote it. The story is okay and predictable.
Second Chances is one of those books you can't help but finish in a day or two, but the characters will stay with you long after that. McKay has created a story that is grounded by realistic people and familiar situations, with just enough drama, romance, and humor to keep readers interested.
Paige finds herself starting over after years of marriage to a cold, controlling man. Her divorce gives her the chance to rediscover herself, her family, her hometown, and most importantly, the star football player from her high school. They'd always secretly had eyes for each other, and while I can't say the ending came as any sort of surprise, I enjoyed how McKay got them there.
Second Chances is an engaging read that may even have you thinking about your own life and decisions you've made. I hope this isn't the last we see of these characters because I can't wait to see what happens to them next."
