The trouble with growing up is that you have to figure out who you want to be…
As if moving out of her parents' house and away from her hometown wasn’t scary enough, Cory Sorrano finds herself at Southern Gulf University not knowing a soul on campus. She is chasing her childhood dreams of becoming a female pilot in the male-dominated aviation industry and already feeling the pressure to succeed.
On the first day of class, Cory quite literally bumps into Samson Wallis, a fellow Aviation major who is easy on the eyes but has an equally gorgeous girlfriend back home in Virginia. As the two help each other navigate through the ups and downs of their freshman year in college, people around them can’t help but notice their unmistakable chemistry.
As Cory struggles to understand her magnetic friendship with Samson, she also needs to make sense of her complicated relationship with her dark and mysterious flight instructor, Cole Turner. Will she ever be able to make it as a female pilot with all of these handsome distractions surrounding her?
Colleen is an author of contemporary new adult & women’s romance. She writes stories with strong characters who are doing their best & finding love along the way.

She lives in Florida with her three children & husband.
A good book I was hoping Cory would have picked Cole he was willing to put his career on hold for her and in the end he told her he loved her before he left I know he did. her friend seemed like a pervert always looking down her shirt every chance he got and I couldn't stand his ex-girlfriend. Samson never told her that he loved her he was too busy looking down at her shirt I don't know why that irritated me but it did this book had my attention from being to end
An enjoyable and easy read. At the start of college, Cory develops strong ties with 2 hot-looking and interesting guys in her life, one being a fellow student called Samson, and the other her flight instructor Cole. There is no love triangle and there is no cheating involved, although there is definitely a magnetic friendship with Samson and chemistry with Cole too. This novel differs from many other YA books in the fact that Cory is going to aviation school and for once her roommate is a devout Christian instead of the usual party-going girl. Also the choice of her major is quite original, being a pilot is her lifelong dream. It was really entertaining to read about her first steps in aviation and the procedures of the aviation fraternity. I instantly liked Cory, her no-nonsense attitude, her adorable clumsiness, and the fact that she’s not stuck-up, like Adeline, at all. With two boys vying for her attention, and Cory who feels good with both of them, you can’t be surprised that drama and heartbreak is inevitable. But who’s heart will be broken, will it be Cory’s perhaps? You’ll have to read to find out! I really liked the ending too, it leaves a small window open for possible change in the sequel. *I received a free copy of this book from GenuineJenn in exchange for my honest opinion*
I like that this novel switches between different perspectives in each chapter; this is very successfully done. I loved all of the characters, especially Cory, the main character, because she is so relatable! She is absolutely your "girl next door" that everyone wants to be friends with.
Near the end, I was a bit confused as to why Cory was doing the things she was doing, because there was not a lot of character insight. At first, I was thinking "oh no! It can't fall apart at the end!" But after reading on, I realized that the author was portraying Cory in this way to hook the reader for the cliff hanger she created at the end! Because we don't know what Cory is thinking, it is impossible to what know what she is going to do next, which makes me want to read the next book even more!
I absolutely recommend this book for any college student who needs someone to relate to or just any person who wishes to re-live memories or feelings of excitement at new college adventures, the frustration of relationship drama, and the gut-wrenching decision of choosing between two perfectly attractive love options.
Colleen Young is a new to me author, and I was so pleased with this discovery. Her writing is smooth, and easy to read, with great dialog.
I’m not usually one to like a love triangle and all it’s complications, but when characters are so well written you can’t help but like them. And that brings about the biggest dilemma of all- who to cheer for!
I do always like flawed characters that show growth as their story progresses. Although we’re not quite there, I can see the potential in each one. Cory is smart, witty, and caring, but now distracted. Samson is less mature, but left to his own devices at a young age, thinks he is. It’s good to see him find his own path and not settle. Cole is standoffish yet kind hearted and you can just see there is a so much more to him.
Good thing for me that Books 2&3 are out because that cliffy would kill me!
I loved this story. A well-balanced young woman enters flight school. She is confused by falling for two men, and can't decide which one she prefers. I liked the fact that she had the self-respect to walk away when emotions were too strong. Its the first of a trilogy, so we were left hanging at the end.
It's great when a book you never heard of before ends up in your inbox. I'm so glad I received the opportunity to review Taking Flight for Colleen Young, if not I would have probably never heard about the series. You guys need to visit Young's website to see all the covers for this series. I LOVE each and everyone of the covers for The Taking Flight trilogy. The other titles in The Taking Flight trilogy are Remove Before Flight (book 2) due out March 25, 2016 and The Event (book 3) due out June 2016.
So Taking Flight is New Adult with characters that are attending a university. The main character Cory, is a aviation major and female. Why did I mention female? Well because only 2% of aviation majors are female and Cory has everyone rooting against her pretty much trying to discourage her about the major she picked because it's a male profession. That isn't going to stop Cory from chasing her dream. So everyone and anyone better step aside and let Cory do work.
This first book in the series we are introduced to the different characters that are all involved with Cory in someway or another. We meet Samson (swoon-worthy), the guy that becomes her "BFF" and her flight instructor who is a senior at the university, that's Cole. Then we meet Cory's friends from high school that all attend different schools now. And a few more folks that are enrolled with Cory at school. Cory is ready to tackle her freshman year and not let anything get in her way or distract her. Ha! Easier said than done. Cory is going to hit some speed bumps and I'm not taking about in the sky when she is flying, oh no. I'm talking about the "boy" kind of speed bumps.
Follow along in Taking Flight as Cory will have to learn to handle boys, flying and school. The story will keep you entertained till the end. I really clicked with Cory's character, she is snarky and I liked that about her. What will happen? Will Cory pass or fail? You will have to take my word and begin reading Taking Flight today! I can't wait to get my hands on book 2, to see what's next. - Yara -------------------
Taking Flight is the first book of the Taking Flight Trilogy by author Colleen Young. This book follows Cory Sorrano as she heads off to her first year of college where she will study to become a pilot. She meets Samson, also in school to become a pilot. The two hit it off right away and become really good friends. There is an obvious attraction that they both have for each other but they also respect their friendship enough to not jump into anything. There is also Cory’s flight instructor Cole who is a bit of an enigma to Cory, but the attraction between the two of them is obvious from the start. Unlike other stories I have read before where there is a love triangle of sorts I didn’t find myself necessarily routing for one guy or the other. I really liked both guys and thought it was well written from a realistic point of view, where one guy doesn’t have to be the villain while the other is the hero who the girl has to end up with. Although both guys are very different personality wise, and Cory’s interactions with each has a different vibe, they are both truly good characters who would make good fits for her.
I didn’t really know what to expect about the tone and flow of this book when I started, but I quickly learned that it was a story that felt like a breath of fresh air. I say this because it is funny in a very natural and realistic way. Cory acts like a normal girl. She has some very funny interactions with her family that left me laughing out loud. She is also not your typical damsel in distress who needs to be saved by the boy she likes. She isn’t shy and reserved, and she doesn’t let stupid misunderstandings unnecessarily drag out in order to cause drama between characters. Cory is funny, she speaks her mind, she can hang with the boys, yet she also can be girly when she is around a guy she likes. I loved her sharp wit and great comebacks. I really liked her character. I felt like I could relate with her more than any other female character I have read about on a really realistic human level.
This story has it all…comedy, love, lust, growing pains and more. If you are looking for something that has a great story plot and all the above things I listed then this book is for you. I can’t wait for the next book to come out so I can see where Cory, Samson and Cole end up. The story ended unresolved and open ended so there is so much more to come and I want to know it all now! I give this story 4 stars. Great, great book! - Pauline
What can I say about Taking Flight, by Colleen Young......
This is a hard review to write.
This was a good read. I really enjoyed the story line, and it was easy to follow and easy to picture the characters. I read it in a day and a half, I simply couldn't put it down. But, when it got towards the end the main character was finally going to choose which man she wanted to be with. So I thought......
The ending was very confusing.
Did I miss something?
Why would she stop there?
These are the things I was asking myself, I even went back to the beginning and then back to the end of the book. It just didn't make sense.
All I can say is I hope there is a sequel or continuation of these characters in the second book, because there was no clear ending for me. If she does write a sequel to this one I would definitely read it to get some closure.
This is going to drive me crazy.

Well written and fun to read! I found this book very engaging so it was hard to put down! I loved how I felt connected to the characters. I can't wait to read the rest!
I could not put it away it was good written en i loved the story also cory and samson are characters i really liked. i cant wait to read the other books
Cory is entering a male-dominated career in aviation. It's an interesting story, and a page-turner. Some of the dialogue seemed a little formal, rather than using contractions, but it didn't take away from the story. It was clean and fun to read. I liked how she was not only attracted to two men, but there was chemistry with both of them. This was not an adulterated love affair. It was a great journey into young love and how Cory finds herself. I really enjoyed the story and will definitely read the next book.
