Play therapy expert Terry Kottman and her colleague Kristin Meany-Walen provide a comprehensive update to this spirited and fun text on integrating Adlerian techniques into play therapy. After an introduction to the basics of the approach and the concepts of Individual Psychology, the stages of Adlerian play therapy are outlined through step-by-step instructions, detailed treatment plans, an ongoing case study, and numerous vignettes. Readers will learn straightforward methods for building a relationship with a child and exploring the child s intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics, as well as ways to help the child gain insight into his or her behavioral patterns and develop new interactional skills. In addition to presenting up-to-date information on trends in play therapy, this latest edition emphasizes the current climate of evidence-based treatment and includes a new chapter on conducting research in play therapy.
Terry Kottman is my play therapy idol. I have seen her speak at a 2 day conference, and I love that she puts her personality into her writing. If you are a play therapist, I highly recommend reading this book. Terry and Kristin present the information in a way that is interesting and engaging. Even if you are not an Adlerian therapist, this book is well worth the read, because the skills and concepts in this book can help you better conceptualize and understand your clients. If you’re a play therapist, Partners in Play gives you creative ways to work with your clients and their families. Not only did I read this book, but I have asked my supervisees to also read this book as they pursue full licensure and play therapy certification. From start to finish, I found myself adjusting my practice to utilize the skills I learned from reading this book. Even if you are a seasoned therapist, this is worth reading as it is fairly short and keeps your interest, and is a good refresher if you consistently work with children.
