IIIIII WEEENNNNT TOOOO THUUUUHH CYBER ZONE. *Coughs* Pardon my outburst: I’m back on Cyber Zone with the last book of the series to mark my halfway point through this little run of obscure 90s middle-grade horror. Visitor from the Beyond is a very solid book with arguably the best story of the series, though not my favorite book. The writing is good and the country setting was a bit refreshing, and the usage of technology for this volume was nice. And the story told here has some strong themes and beats, which crescendo at the third act. Characters are well-written especially including the semi-complex Billy Fowler (the name screams complicated upbringing lmao), and I liked the drama. But some shortcomings include the usual sluggishly slow pace with these Cyber Zones, the convoluted plot (it pulls a “the real villain was—“ twice, stacked cast that is all somewhat important, random but inoffensive ghost mechanics, etc.) and the ending. I think the ending of this book is plenty demeaning, as it sort of undermines the little arc we had with a certain antagonist. It’s not The Ghost of Slappy level disappointing since it was very brief and more like sequel bait than just a dark ending, but still rough with the character’s story in hindsight. Overall, 8/10. It’s really good, though not much a rec as it’s got good themes but not the most interesting story of the series by far. Virtual Nightmare still my CZ GOAT, such a fever dream. Technologia.
Haha I remember loving this book when I was young. I can't really remember too much about it but I remember reading it over and over again because I liked the story line.
